Our verdict on Azure Functions
Azure Functions is Microsoft's managed serverless platform for running event-driven and scheduled code in Azure. It suits developers building Microsoft-stack applications across web, Windows, Linux, and API environments. Functions can be written in C#, Java, JavaScript, PowerShell, Python, TypeScript, Go, and custom handlers such as Rust. Triggers and input/output bindings connect function code with other services without requiring each integration to be implemented independently.
Pricing is organized across Flex Consumption, Consumption, Premium, and Dedicated plans. Flex Consumption provides on-demand and always-ready billing modes, while Consumption uses per-second resource consumption billing; both include a monthly free grant for executions and resource consumption. Premium adds prewarmed workers, no execution charge, and virtual network access. Dedicated runs in an App Service plan with predictable scaling and costs. Azure Functions also connects with Azure Storage, Event Grid, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, API Management, and Azure OpenAI, making it a natural fit for applications already centered on Azure services.
Deployment options include command-line tools, CI/CD pipelines, and integrated development environments. Supported hosting plans provide deployment slots and custom domain mapping, while custom handlers and containerized function apps extend runtime and packaging options. Azure Monitor and Application Insights support operational visibility. Flex Consumption has no enforced maximum function timeout, but HTTP-triggered functions still have a 230-second response limit, and deployment slots are unavailable on that plan. Choose Azure Functions for Azure-centered, event-driven workloads that benefit from flexible hosting; consider another platform if a separate free plan or deployment slots on the most flexible consumption option is essential.
