For the strongest privacy boundary, run a chatbot locally with Ollama so prompts stay on your own computer. If you need a hosted service, Duck.ai is the most privacy-oriented option in this comparison: it removes personal metadata before forwarding requests, keeps chat history locally by default, and says providers must delete prompts and responses after generation and not use Duck.ai conversations for training, subject to stated exceptions. Brave Leo is a practical no-login browser assistant with stated no-retention and no-training defaults. Claude’s incognito mode limits model-improvement use but still permits certain safety handling, while Gemini’s signed-in controls allow auto-delete windows of 3, 18 or 36 months—or indefinite retention—and human-reviewed data may remain for up to three years. No service makes a sensitive conversation risk-free; privacy depends on processing location, retention, training, human access, metadata and the security of your device.
What does “private AI chatbot” actually mean?
“Private” is not a single technical feature or certification. A chatbot can avoid training on your prompts yet retain them in an account, remove your IP address yet send the text to an outside model provider, or keep no server history while leaving a readable transcript on your laptop. Evaluate the separate properties below rather than relying on a privacy badge or an incognito label.
| Privacy question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the prompt processed? | Your device, the chatbot operator’s infrastructure, a partner provider, or a mixture | Processing location determines who must be trusted and what legal or technical controls apply. |
| How long is it retained? | No server retention, short-lived processing, account history, encrypted backup, or a stated multi-year window | Retention creates more time for accidental exposure, legal requests or account compromise. |
| Is it used to improve models? | Prohibited, opt-in, opt-out, or allowed under exceptions | “Not used for training” may still allow safety, abuse-prevention or legal handling. |
| Can people review it? | No stated access, limited safety review, routine quality review, or human-review exceptions | Human access can expose information that automated systems never reveal. |
| What metadata travels with it? | IP address, account identifier, device information, timestamps and diagnostics | Metadata can identify you even when the message itself contains no name. |
| Where is history stored? | Only on your device, encrypted sync, or ordinary account storage | A local transcript and a provider-held transcript have different attack surfaces. |
Which private AI chatbot is best for sensitive conversations?
Choose Ollama for maximum local control, Duck.ai for a privacy-focused hosted experience, and Brave Leo when you want a no-login assistant in a browser. Claude and Gemini can be configured more carefully, but their policies leave more retention or safety-review exposure for sensitive material.
| Service | Processing and identity | Retention and history | Training and human access | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama | Runs selected models locally on your computer; no provider account is required for local use. | Ollama states that prompts are never stored or trained on. Local files, logs and backups remain your responsibility. | The local-control boundary minimizes provider access, but model safety and maintenance depend on your setup. | Highly sensitive drafts, offline work and users willing to secure their own device. |
| Duck.ai | Hosted chat; DuckDuckGo says it removes personal metadata such as IP addresses before sending requests to model providers. | Chats are stored locally by default. Optional Sync & Backup uses encryption with a key held only on your devices. | Providers agree to delete prompts and responses after generation and not train on Duck.ai conversations, with listed exceptions. | People who need capable hosted models without ordinary account-linked history. |
| Brave Leo | Browser assistant; no account or login is required. Requests are handled through Brave’s service and selected models. | Brave says Leo does not retain or share chats. Your browser, operating system and any local history still need protection. | Brave says chats are not used for model training. Available pre-installed models include Claude, DeepSeek, Gemma, Llama and Qwen. | No-login assistance inside a privacy-oriented browser. |
| Claude incognito | Hosted service tied to the Claude session and its applicable account controls. | Incognito chats receive a special handling policy; do not treat the mode as proof that every backend copy disappears immediately. | Anthropic says incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, but safety classifiers may use conversations for safety models, policy enforcement or safety research. | Users who need Claude’s capabilities and can avoid regulated or identifying data. |
| Gemini | Signed-in Google service with account-level activity controls. | Auto-delete can be set to 3, 18 or 36 months, or indefinite. Data reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years. | Review and retention settings make the account policy central to the risk assessment. | General questions where configurable history is acceptable, not a first choice for secrets. |
Is a local chatbot the most private option?
Usually, yes, because the prompt can remain inside a computer you control. Ollama’s published statement is direct: “Your prompts are never stored or trained on.” That removes a major provider-side exposure, but it does not secure the endpoint automatically.
#1 Best Overall
What local processing protects
- Prompts need not cross the internet to reach a hosted inference service.
- No provider account is required for the local conversation itself.
- Model-improvement policies at a cloud provider do not apply to text that never leaves the machine.
What local processing does not protect
- A stolen, unlocked or malware-infected computer can expose transcripts, caches, screenshots and backups.
- Cloud backup, shared folders and synchronization can silently copy chat data elsewhere.
- You are responsible for choosing a model, downloading updates, checking licenses and evaluating unsafe or inaccurate output.
- Network-connected extensions, telemetry from other software and copied prompts can defeat the local boundary.
How to set up a safer local workflow
- Install Ollama from its official site and select a model appropriate for your hardware and task.
- Keep the operating system, Ollama installation and model files updated from trusted sources.
- Use full-disk encryption, a strong login password and automatic screen locking.
- Check where chat transcripts, shell history and application logs are written; exclude sensitive folders from consumer cloud backup.
- Separate high-sensitivity work from browsers, extensions and accounts that can upload clipboard contents or files.
- Delete temporary exports securely when the work is complete, and retain only the minimum records required by your own policy.
How private is Duck.ai when it forwards prompts to providers?
Duck.ai is a hosted compromise: it forwards the prompt for generation, but adds metadata minimization, local-first history and provider deletion commitments. DuckDuckGo says it removes personal metadata such as your IP address before sending a request to participating model providers. The provider agreements require prompts and responses to be deleted after generation and prohibit training on Duck.ai conversations, subject to the exceptions described in its privacy terms.
Where your conversation is stored
Chats are stored locally by default, so closing an account does not describe the whole risk: the copy on your browser or device still matters. Duck.ai’s optional Sync & Backup encrypts synchronized history with a key held only on your devices. That design limits what the service can read, but losing every device that holds the key can also make recovery impossible.
What Duck.ai does not mean
- The model provider still receives the prompt content long enough to generate a response.
- Removing an IP address does not remove every identifying signal; timing, browser state, account context or the content itself may still identify a person.
- Deletion-after-generation commitments are policy promises with exceptions, not a guarantee that no transient technical copy ever exists.
Is Brave Leo private without an account?
Leo is a strong choice when avoiding account linkage is your priority. Brave states that “Leo doesn’t retain or share chats, or use them for model training. No account or login is required.” The assistant includes pre-installed models such as Claude, DeepSeek, Gemma, Llama and Qwen, so model-specific behavior can differ even when the Leo interface is the same.
Use Leo without creating a new identity trail
Because login is not required, a conversation does not automatically attach to a Leo account profile. Nevertheless, your internet connection, browser configuration, operating-system logs, screenshots, clipboard managers and extensions can reveal that a conversation occurred. Treat “no account” as reduced account linkage, not anonymity from every observer.
Protect the browser-side copy
- Use a separate browser profile for sensitive work and keep the device locked.
- Review whether the browser saves page history, downloads, autofill data or crash reports.
- Do not paste credentials, recovery codes or documents that your browser can upload through another extension.
- Before sharing a response, remove hidden context, quoted prompts and identifying file names.
What does Claude’s incognito mode protect?
Incognito mode limits model-improvement use, but it is not an absolute confidentiality guarantee. Anthropic says, “Your incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your privacy settings.” The same guidance says safety classifiers may still use conversations for safety models, policy enforcement or safety research.

Information Anthropic advises you not to enter
Anthropic specifically advises caution with Social Security numbers, credit-card and bank details, health records, passwords and confidential documents. Replace identifiers with placeholders, summarize only the necessary facts and remove attachments that are not essential to the question.
How to interpret the setting
Incognito changes one important purpose—model improvement—but does not override legal, abuse-prevention or safety operations. If a conversation would cause harm when exposed to a limited safety review, do not place the original text in a hosted chatbot; redact it or use a local workflow instead. See Anthropic’s current explanation of who can view sensitive chats at its Help Center.

Gemini’s signed-in controls are more explicit than a simple “on” or “off” switch, but the available windows are measured in months or years. Google documents auto-delete choices of 3, 18 or 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google also says data reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years. Read the current policy at Google’s Gemini privacy page before using the service for anything regulated or identifying.
Choosing an auto-delete window
In the Gemini activity controls for your signed-in account, select the shortest auto-delete period that still meets your need for continuity. Auto-delete is a retention limit for the account feature; it does not turn a sensitive prompt into an unrecorded, real-time exchange, and it does not erase copies you exported or shared elsewhere.
Why human review matters
A reviewer may see a sample selected for quality, safety or policy work even when your account is configured for automatic deletion. The three-year maximum Google describes for reviewed data is therefore a separate exposure window from the 3-, 18- or 36-month activity setting.
Can you talk to an AI anonymously?
You can reduce account linkage, but complete anonymity is difficult. A local Ollama session can avoid sending the prompt to a provider. Duck.ai says it strips IP addresses before forwarding requests. Leo requires no account. None of those facts guarantees that your network operator, employer, browser, device, payment account or the wording of the prompt cannot identify you.

How should you choose a chatbot for your threat model?
The right choice depends on what would happen if a prompt were exposed, not on which product has the shortest privacy slogan.
| Your situation | Prefer | Reason | Extra precaution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade secrets, unpublished code or identifiable legal/medical notes | Local Ollama | Keeps inference inside a device you control. | Encrypt the device and disable unneeded backups. |
| Hosted model needed, but you want metadata minimization and local history | Duck.ai | IP removal, local-first storage and provider deletion commitments. | Read the listed exceptions and avoid sending unnecessary identifiers. |
| Quick browser help without account creation | Brave Leo | No login and stated no-retention/no-training defaults. | Protect browser history and check extensions. |
| Claude-specific work that is not regulated or identifying | Claude incognito | Incognito prevents use for model improvement. | Assume limited safety handling can still occur. |
| Routine questions where account continuity matters | Gemini with the shortest practical auto-delete window | Clear account controls and selectable retention periods. | Do not use it for secrets; account review exposure remains possible. |
What should you never paste into a hosted chatbot?
Unless a provider’s contract and your organization’s policy explicitly permit it, keep direct secrets out of hosted chats. That includes passwords, private keys, one-time recovery codes, payment-card numbers, government identifiers, complete medical records, confidential client files and unreleased source code.
Safer redaction pattern
- Copy only the paragraph or data fields needed to answer the question.
- Replace identifiers with stable labels such as
PERSON_AandACCOUNT_1. - Round dates and amounts when exact values do not affect the reasoning.
- Ask the question, then verify the answer against the original offline document.
- Delete local exports and clear temporary attachments according to your retention policy.
What privacy failures do people commonly misunderstand?
“No training” means no one can see it
Training and access are different controls. A service can exclude chats from model improvement and still process them for safety classification, abuse prevention, troubleshooting or legal compliance.
Deleting the visible chat proves every copy is gone
The interface may remove a history item while backups, safety logs, provider-side transient processing or a downloaded export follow a different lifecycle. The exact plan and account policy controls those copies.

Incognito equals anonymous
Incognito usually changes retention or training treatment inside one service. It does not hide your network connection, protect an unlocked device or redact identifying text.
Local means automatically secure
A local model removes a provider from the inference path, but malware, another user account, an unencrypted disk or a cloud backup can still expose the conversation. Endpoint security becomes your job.
Encrypted sync means the provider can restore everything
When the encryption key is held only on your devices, the provider may be unable to decrypt the backup. Keep a secure recovery plan for the devices that hold the key, and understand what happens if all of them are lost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you audit a chatbot before using it for sensitive work?
Use the same questions every time a provider changes its model, plan or privacy page.
- Identify the processing path: local model, provider infrastructure, partner model or a combination.
- Find the exact retention period for prompts, responses, attachments, logs and human-reviewed samples.
- Check whether training is prohibited, optional, enabled by default or subject to exceptions.
- Look for human-review language covering safety, abuse, quality, legal requests and research.
- Determine whether IP addresses, account identifiers and device metadata are removed before inference.
- Check where history is stored and whether synchronization is optional, encrypted and recoverable.
- Test deletion with a non-sensitive prompt, then read what the policy says about backups and delayed deletion.
- Document the approved use case so coworkers do not assume that one privacy setting covers every chatbot or account type.
What is the practical verdict?
Use local Ollama when confidentiality outweighs convenience and you can secure the computer yourself. Choose Duck.ai when you need hosted models but want IP metadata removed, local-first history and stated provider deletion and no-training commitments. Choose Brave Leo for no-login browser assistance, while remembering that local browser traces remain. Claude incognito and Gemini’s retention controls are useful risk reductions, not permission to paste secrets. In every case, minimize the data first; privacy settings cannot make an unnecessary disclosure necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a local AI chatbot work without an internet connection?
After the software and model are downloaded, local inference can generally run without sending prompts to a cloud service. You still need occasional trusted updates, and any feature that fetches a remote model or web content changes the data path.
Does removing an IP address make a Duck.ai conversation anonymous?
No. IP removal reduces one strong identifier before a request reaches a model provider, but the prompt text, timing, browser state or other network records can still be identifying. Redaction remains necessary for genuinely sensitive questions.
What happens if I lose the devices that hold an encrypted chat backup key?
A device-held key can prevent the service from decrypting your synchronized history, which limits provider access. The trade-off is that losing every key-holding device may make the backup unrecoverable, so maintain a secure recovery method.
Are browser privacy settings enough to protect a sensitive AI conversation?
No. Browser history, extensions, screenshots, clipboard tools, crash reports and an unlocked operating system can expose content independently of the chatbot’s retention policy. Use a separate profile or device and remove unnecessary local copies.
Should I trust a chatbot’s privacy policy for regulated information?
Treat the policy as one input, not as a compliance approval. Confirm your organization’s contract, jurisdiction, data-processing terms and incident procedures before entering regulated records; otherwise redact the data or keep processing local.
