Claude has the clearest data-minimization posture for ordinary consumer use, provided you turn off model improvement or use Incognito. ChatGPT offers comparable control through its training setting and Temporary Chat, while Gemini provides useful switches but documents the broadest collection of account, device, location, connected-app and human-review data. None of the three is a zero-retention service: each may keep information for delivery, safety, abuse prevention, legal obligations or feedback. The comparison below reflects provider policies available in October 2026; settings and terms can vary by account, region and feature.

Which AI chatbot collects the least data?

For a personal account, Claude is the strongest default choice for minimizing routine model-training use when its model-improvement setting is disabled or when you use Incognito. ChatGPT can reach a similar practical level with training disabled and Temporary Chat, but its consumer content may be used for improvement unless you change the setting. Gemini can suppress ordinary activity-based training, yet Google describes more extensive ecosystem data flows and longer retention for chats selected for human review.

Service Routine training control Temporary or private mode Deletion and retention details Human review and ecosystem scope
Claude Consumer chats may improve Claude when you opt in, when safety systems flag a conversation, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even if the main setting is enabled. Deleted chats leave history immediately and are removed from back-end storage within 30 days. If improvement is allowed, de-identified training-pipeline data may remain for up to five years. Safety-flagged material can be retained under separate policy periods; collection is comparatively focused on the Claude service.
ChatGPT Consumer content may be used to improve services unless you disable training. Temporary Chat does not appear in history and is not used to improve OpenAI models. Deleted personal data is generally removed within 30 days, subject to legal, safety, security and other exceptions. A limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access content for abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters or model improvement unless you opt out.
Gemini With Keep Activity on, saved activity can improve services and train generative-AI models. With it off, future chats are not used for training unless you submit feedback. Temporary Chat is not used to train Google’s AI models. Keep Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, with 3-month, 36-month or indefinite choices. Human-reviewed chats can remain up to three years; chats with activity off are retained for 72 hours for service and safety. Google documents prompts, uploads, feedback, generated content, device and location data, connected apps and other Google-service context, with human review of some chats.

These are policy descriptions, not an independent privacy score or a guarantee that one provider stores less data in every situation.

How does Claude handle chat data?

Claude gives you the most direct opt-in wording for consumer model training. Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude only when you allow improvement, when safety systems flag a conversation, or when you otherwise explicitly opt in.

Turn off model improvement for routine use

Disable the model-improvement setting in your Claude account before sending sensitive material. Anthropic’s Privacy Center statement dated March 16, 2026 says: “If you decide to turn off the model improvement setting, we will not use your previous or new chats or coding sessions for future model training.” This is a training-use control, not a promise that the service cannot process a prompt for delivery, security or legal reasons.

Use Incognito for a one-off sensitive question

Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when your normal improvement setting is on. Incognito is therefore useful when you want a separate session without changing your account-wide preference. You should still avoid entering secrets that do not need to reach a cloud service.

What deletion means on Claude

Deleting a conversation removes it from chat history immediately. Anthropic says the associated data is deleted from back-end storage within 30 days under ordinary circumstances. If you have allowed model improvement, de-identified information can remain in model-training pipelines for up to five years, so deleting the visible conversation does not necessarily erase every de-identified derivative at once.

How does ChatGPT handle prompts and retention?

ChatGPT is configurable rather than strictly opt-in by default for consumer use. OpenAI says it may use consumer content to improve services and train models depending on your settings, so privacy-conscious users should change the data-control preference before sharing confidential text.

Disable training and use Temporary Chat

Turn off the setting that allows your content to improve OpenAI models for normal conversations. For a particularly sensitive, one-time exchange, start a Temporary Chat. OpenAI’s policy says Temporary Chats do not appear in history and are not used to improve its models.

Understand the 30-day deletion rule

OpenAI generally removes deleted personal data within 30 days. The policy preserves exceptions for legal requirements, safety and security work and other operational needs, so the 30-day period should not be read as an absolute maximum for every copy or circumstance.

Who can access a ChatGPT conversation?

A limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access user content for abuse or security investigations, customer support, legal matters or model improvement unless you have opted out of the relevant improvement use. This access is restricted by role and purpose, but it means a cloud chatbot is not equivalent to a private local notebook.

What data does Gemini collect, and how long does it keep it?

Gemini has the broadest documented collection scope of the three because Google describes not only prompts and uploads, but also feedback, generated content, device and location information, connected apps and context from other Google services. The key decision is whether Keep Activity is enabled, supplemented by Temporary Chat and careful control of feedback and integrations.

Keep Activity on: the 18-month default

When Keep Activity is on, Gemini activity is saved and can be used to improve Google services, including training generative-AI models. Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to three months, 36 months or indefinite retention, so check the selected value rather than assuming the default applies to your account.

Keep Activity off: 72 hours, with a feedback exception

With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours to provide the service and protect users. Turning the switch off therefore reduces history and training use but does not create an immediate-erasure channel.

Temporary Chat and human review

Gemini Temporary Chat is not used to train Google’s AI models, yet Google may still process the conversation for service delivery and safety. Some chats are reviewed by human reviewers. Google says reviewed chats, together with related data such as language, device type, location information or feedback, are not deleted when you delete your activity and may be retained for up to three years.

Audit connected services separately

Gemini can draw on connected apps and other Google-service context. Review those permissions, along with location and account settings, before using Gemini for work or personal information that would be sensitive outside the chat window.

Which chatbot is best for a specific privacy goal?

The answer changes with the type of exposure you are trying to minimize. Use this decision guide rather than treating “most private” as a single measurable property.

Your goal Most suitable documented option Why
Minimize routine consumer training use Claude with model improvement disabled, or Claude Incognito Anthropic describes improvement use as opt-in, safety-triggered or otherwise explicitly authorized.
Start a clearly separated one-off session ChatGPT Temporary Chat or Gemini Temporary Chat; Claude Incognito is the equivalent control Each mode suppresses ordinary history or training use, while still allowing service and safety processing.
Limit ecosystem and account-context exposure Claude, assuming you do not add external integrations Gemini’s policy explicitly covers connected apps, device and location signals and other Google-service context.
Set a business no-training default OpenAI API, ChatGPT Business or ChatGPT Enterprise OpenAI says data from these business offerings is not used for training by default unless the customer opts in.

This guide does not establish that Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini is safer against breaches, has a lower market-wide incident rate or offers stronger encryption. No standardized independent cross-provider score was cited for those questions.

What settings should you change before sending sensitive information?

  1. Change training controls first. Disable Claude model improvement or ChatGPT model-improvement use. In Gemini, turn Keep Activity off if you do not want future chats saved to Activity or used for training.
  2. Select a temporary mode for a single sensitive task. Choose Claude Incognito, ChatGPT Temporary Chat or Gemini Temporary Chat instead of relying on a normal conversation that you plan to delete later.
  3. Do not submit feedback on a sensitive exchange. Feedback can create an additional review or training pathway, particularly in Gemini when Keep Activity is off.
  4. Remove direct identifiers. Replace names, account numbers, exact addresses, access tokens and customer identifiers with neutral labels before uploading text or files.
  5. Audit integrations. Review Gemini connected-app permissions and, for any service, disable optional memory, location or account integrations that are not needed for the task.
  6. Delete finished conversations. Deletion reduces ordinary account history, but retain the provider-specific exceptions in mind: safety, legal, security and de-identified training records may follow different schedules.
  7. Use an organizational plan for regulated work. Ask for a written no-training default, retention period, deletion process and access controls rather than relying on consumer settings alone.

Are business and API plans more private than consumer chatbots?

For the business products covered by the published policies, OpenAI API, ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise provide the clearest documented no-training default: OpenAI says customer data is not used to train models unless the customer opts in. That default does not eliminate logging, abuse monitoring, legal retention or administrator access, so procurement should still request contractual retention and deletion terms.

Do not assume a consumer account gains the same treatment simply because it is used for work. Confirm the exact product, account type, region, connected features and contract language, then test the settings with a non-sensitive prompt before migration.

What privacy limits apply to all three services?

All three are hosted services that must receive your prompt, and all three reserve some processing or retention for service delivery, safety, abuse prevention, security, legal compliance or feedback. A setting that suppresses training is not the same as end-to-end encryption, local-only processing or guaranteed immediate deletion.

Policies also change. Anthropic’s training controls, OpenAI’s consumer defaults and Google’s Gemini retention settings should be checked against the current account interface and policy page immediately before deployment, especially when your organization operates across regions or uses connected features. For highly confidential material, the safest choice is to remove identifying details or use a tool whose deployment and retention terms you control rather than sending the original data to any consumer chatbot.

How long can flagged Claude data remain?

Anthropic states that inputs and outputs associated with usage-policy violations may be retained for up to two years, while trust-and-safety classification scores may be retained for up to seven years. Those periods apply to flagged-policy records, not ordinary deleted conversations, and they explain why turning off model improvement cannot guarantee that safety-related records disappear immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off training erase chats I already sent?

It changes future model-improvement use, but it is not an instant deletion command. Use each service’s deletion control as well, and remember that legal, safety, security or de-identified records can follow separate retention rules.

Can a human read a Gemini Temporary Chat?

Temporary Chat is excluded from model training, but Google may still process it for service delivery and safety. Some conversations selected for human review can be retained separately from ordinary Gemini Activity.

Is a chatbot with a 30-day deletion policy private enough for medical or legal notes?

A deletion window alone does not answer that question. You also need to evaluate human access, safety retention, connected services, contractual controls and the rules that apply to your jurisdiction and industry.

What should a company ask before approving an AI chatbot?

Request the exact training default, retention schedule, deletion exceptions, human-access process, subprocessors, regional storage details and administrator controls in writing. Verify that the terms apply to the specific business or API product rather than a consumer account.
