For a camera-free countertop display, choose the Google Nest Hub (2nd gen). For the greatest control over where automation data lives, use Home Assistant Green with a separately selected screen. A Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with a Touch Display 2 is the flexible do-it-yourself route. Apple HomeView is worth considering only if you want Apple’s shared-home features and accept a camera, Apple-account dependencies and preorder uncertainty.

None of these is automatically private. Microphones, cloud voice processing, third-party integrations, account history and the information shown on a shared screen all matter. The right choice depends on whether your priority is no built-in camera, local control, a custom hardware build or an Apple household display.

What makes a smart display privacy-focused?

Privacy is not a single product label. Compare each candidate on several independent questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is there a camera? A model without one removes an entire class of accidental video capture, but it can still have microphones and motion or presence sensors.
  • Can the microphones be electrically disabled? A physical switch is more meaningful than an on-screen status icon because it provides a visible, local control.
  • What happens after activation? Standby processing, wake-word detection and the handling of the resulting voice request are different stages.
  • Can automations run locally? Local execution can keep commands on the home network, but only when the device and the particular integration support it.
  • Which services are cloud-linked? Remote access, voice assistants, media services and vendor accounts may send data outside the home even when the controller itself is local.
  • What appears on a shared screen? Calendars, camera feeds, package notices and presence information can expose household data to anyone nearby.

Home Assistant states that it runs on your own hardware and stores data locally, while also warning that individual integrations and optional cloud services determine the complete privacy outcome (Home Assistant privacy FAQ). Google’s documentation, by contrast, says an activated Gemini for Home request is sent to Google servers (Google Home & Nest Privacy Hub). Treat those as different architectures, not as a simple “private” or “not private” score.

Is the Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) the best camera-free Echo Show alternative?

Yes, if you want a ready-made countertop display and do not want a built-in camera. Google specifies a 7-inch 1024 × 600 touchscreen, three far-field microphones, a microphone-off switch and Soli sensing; its specification page does not list a camera for the second-generation Nest Hub (Google’s Nest Hub specifications).

What you get

  • A familiar smart-display format for timers, media controls, household information and smart-home controls.
  • A physical microphone switch that gives a clear local indication when the microphones are disabled.
  • No camera listed for this model, unlike the Nest Hub Max. Do not assume the two products have the same sensor set.
  • Soli sensing remains a privacy consideration: the device can use radar-based presence sensing even without a camera.

What still leaves the home

The microphone switch does not make the device offline. Google’s privacy documentation says that once Gemini for Home detects an activation, it exits standby mode and sends the request to Google servers. Review Home History and account settings, and consider which household members can invoke the assistant. A camera-free design reduces visual exposure; it does not prevent voice data from being processed remotely.

How to configure a Nest Hub for less data exposure

  1. Place the hub where conversations that should remain private are not likely to trigger it accidentally.
  2. Use the physical microphone switch during meetings, at night or whenever voice capture is unnecessary.
  3. Review Google Home app privacy and Home History controls before adding household members.
  4. Disable integrations you do not need, especially services that expose calendars, contacts, shopping or doorbell feeds.
  5. Keep sensitive camera feeds and personal schedules off a display located in a public-facing room.

This is the most straightforward recommendation for a screen now, but it is not a local-only system. If your deciding requirement is that automations and voice processing stay inside your network, move to Home Assistant instead.

Can Home Assistant Green replace an Echo Show?

Home Assistant Green is a home-automation controller, not a smart display. It arrives with Home Assistant installed, but its HDMI port is intended for diagnostics; it does not provide a normal dashboard output. Pair it with a separate tablet, monitor or other browser-capable screen.

Why it is the strongest local-control route

Home Assistant says its data is stored on the user’s hardware and that locally supported devices can communicate over the home network (Home Assistant FAQ). Dashboards are assembled from views and cards, so you can show lights, thermostats, energy, media or alerts without adopting a fixed vendor layout. This ownership model is useful when the priority is reducing dependence on a remote account or a vendor’s display service.

Requirements and limitations

  • Ethernet: Green is designed to connect to the network by Ethernet.
  • Initial internet access: Setup initially requires internet, even though many later operations can be local.
  • A separate screen: Use a tablet, wall panel, monitor or another device that can open the Home Assistant dashboard.
  • Integration-by-integration privacy: A local controller cannot make a cloud-only light, camera, music service or voice provider local.
  • Deliberate hardware choices: The separate screen’s camera, microphone, power supply and mounting arrangement determine additional privacy exposure.

How to build the Green-plus-screen arrangement

  1. Connect Green to Ethernet and complete the initial Home Assistant setup.
  2. Add only integrations that document a local communication path when local control is a requirement.
  3. Create a dashboard with separate views for shared controls and sensitive information. Keep personal calendars or camera feeds out of the household landing view if visitors can see it.
  4. Choose a screen without a camera, or disable its camera and microphone at the operating-system or hardware level.
  5. Open the dashboard in a browser or kiosk-style app on the chosen screen. The screen renders the interface; Green remains the controller.
  6. Test each automation’s behavior when the internet connection is unavailable, because a local controller does not guarantee that every integration will continue working.

This route requires more assembly than a retail smart display, but it gives you the clearest separation between the automation brain and the screen. It is also easier to replace the screen later without migrating the entire home.

Is a Raspberry Pi dashboard the best camera-free custom build?

Choose a Raspberry Pi build when you want to specify every component and are comfortable maintaining a small project. Home Assistant documents installation on Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM and a 32 GB microSD card for the described setup. Raspberry Pi’s official Touch Display 2 is available in 5-inch, 7-inch and 10-inch versions.

Component costs and what they do

Raspberry Pi lists the Touch Display 2 at $40 for 5 inches, $60 for 7 inches and $80 for 10 inches (prices checked Nov 2026). Those are display list prices, not the cost of a complete system. You still need a compatible Pi, storage, power, enclosure or mounting hardware and a way to run the dashboard.

Important architecture distinction

Installing Home Assistant OS on a Raspberry Pi makes that Pi the automation server; it does not automatically turn it into a finished kiosk screen. Plan separately for the device or software that renders the dashboard, whether that is the same Pi configured for a browser, another Pi, a tablet or a monitor. A camera-free build is a design choice you make by selecting hardware without a camera and disabling microphones where applicable.

Practical build sequence

  1. Choose Pi 4 or Pi 5 hardware with at least 2 GB RAM, a reliable 32 GB microSD card and appropriate power.
  2. Select the Touch Display 2 size and a mounting position that keeps the screen visible only to intended household members.
  3. Install Home Assistant using its Raspberry Pi documentation and complete network setup.
  4. Decide whether the Pi will both host Home Assistant and render the dashboard. If so, plan for the additional browser or kiosk configuration; otherwise use a separate display device.
  5. Build a minimal dashboard first: lighting, climate and a few status indicators. Add sensitive feeds only after deciding who can see the panel.
  6. Disable unused radios, cameras and microphones, and keep the Pi and display software updated.

No complete Raspberry Pi build is a turnkey Echo Show substitute. Its benefit is control over the hardware and software boundary; its cost is installation, maintenance and troubleshooting responsibility.

Should you preorder Apple HomeView?

Apple HomeView is the most conventional new alternative for an Apple household, but it is not camera-free and it was still a preorder at the research cutoff. Apple announced countertop and wall-mounted models at a $299 US starting price, with stated availability beginning November 13, 2026. Recheck stock, delivery dates and the final US price before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware and compatibility

  • 7-inch display.
  • 12MP camera and four microphones.
  • Thread support for compatible smart-home accessories.
  • An iPhone running iOS 27.2 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 27.2 or later, is required for the stated setup.
  • Apple says the system can recognize up to six household members.

Apple describes Secure Exclaves as compartmentalizing camera and microphone processing. Siri requests may be handled on-device or through Private Cloud Compute. Those are Apple’s architectural and privacy claims, not the result of an independent security audit. The product should therefore be treated as privacy-conscious by design, not as proven completely offline.

Camera and wall-mount considerations

The 12MP camera makes HomeView unsuitable for a strict no-camera requirement. Apple’s specified camera-recognition features require supported iCloud+ plans, adding another account and subscription dependency. The wall-mounted version also needs a separately sold compatible mount, cable and power adapter, so its $299 starting price is not the complete installed cost.

When waiting makes sense

HomeView is a reasonable wait-and-see option if your household already uses Apple devices, wants FaceTime from a shared panel and accepts the camera. It is a poor fit if you need a screen immediately, require a camera-free room or want an established post-launch record. The announcement provides no independent performance or long-term privacy results, so do not treat preorder availability as proof of real-world behavior.

What are the privacy trade-offs among these choices?

Priority Recommended path Main trade-off
Screen now, no built-in camera Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) Activated voice requests can reach Google servers; microphones and Soli sensing remain.
Local-first automation Home Assistant Green plus a separate screen Green is not a display, and each integration may have different cloud requirements.
Maximum hardware control Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 plus Touch Display 2 You must assemble, secure and maintain the server and dashboard arrangement.
Apple ecosystem and shared FaceTime HomeView preorder Includes a camera, depends on Apple hardware and was not yet shipping at the cutoff.

What should you do before putting any smart display in a shared room?

  1. Map the data: List microphones, cameras, presence sensors, cloud accounts and integrations before installation.
  2. Separate shared and private views: Use a household dashboard for lights and climate, and a restricted view for calendars, cameras or presence information.
  3. Use network boundaries: Put the controller and IoT devices on an appropriate network segment when your router supports it, while ensuring local discovery still works.
  4. Set physical controls: Use microphone switches, camera shutters or hardware disconnection where available. A software mute is useful but not equivalent to a power cut.
  5. Review retention: Check voice history, account activity and optional cloud backups after setup, not just during purchase.
  6. Plan failure behavior: Know which lights, locks and alarms continue working if the internet or the vendor account is unavailable.

What are the common failure modes?

The dashboard is blank on the separate screen

Confirm that the screen is connected to the same network as Home Assistant, that the dashboard URL is correct and that the account has permission to view it. Green’s HDMI port will not solve this because it is diagnostic output, not a dashboard connection.

A “local” automation still calls the internet

Inspect the integration documentation and its configuration. The controller may be local while a vendor API, remote voice service or cloud-only device remains in the path. Replace that device, disable the cloud option or accept the dependency explicitly.

Voice commands work only intermittently

Check whether the physical microphone switch is enabled, whether the device is too far from the speaker and whether the command depends on an online service. For privacy-sensitive rooms, prefer a physical control panel over adding more microphones.

The screen exposes more than intended

Remove camera feeds, calendars, presence cards and notification history from the default view. Create a separate authenticated view for household members who need those details.

How we picked these alternatives

The shortlist follows the documented privacy and ownership characteristics rather than an invented security score. It includes a ready-made camera-free display, a local-first controller paired with a screen, a customizable Raspberry Pi build and Apple’s announced preorder for readers who prioritize ecosystem features. Selection criteria were camera and microphone controls, local versus cloud processing, hardware transparency, setup requirements, current availability and whether the product is actually a display rather than an accessory.

Are there useful Home Assistant accessories that are not smart displays?

Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is a voice accessory with a physical switch that cuts microphone power; processing can be local or configured for cloud services. Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is an optional radio for Zigbee or Thread. Neither includes a screen, so use them only as additions to a separately designed dashboard, not as Echo Show replacements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an Echo Show without a camera?

The Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) is the clearest current conventional option whose specifications do not list a camera. It still has microphones and Soli sensing, and activated voice requests can be sent to Google servers, so camera-free does not mean offline.

Does the Nest Hub send my voice to Google?

Google says an activated Gemini for Home request leaves standby mode and is sent to Google servers. The physical microphone switch can disable the microphones, but it does not convert the device into a local-only assistant.

Can I make a local-only smart-home display?

You can get close with Home Assistant and devices that support local communication, using a separate screen for the dashboard. Verify every integration individually; cloud-only accessories or optional remote services can still transmit data.

Is Home Assistant Green a screen?

No. Green is the Home Assistant controller, and its HDMI port is for diagnostics. You need a tablet, monitor or other browser-capable display, or a separately built Raspberry Pi dashboard.

Does Apple HomeView have a camera, and should I preorder it?

Yes, Apple lists a 12MP camera and four microphones. Preorder only if you accept that hardware, already use the required Apple devices and are comfortable relying on Apple’s announced privacy architecture before independent post-launch evidence exists.
