Yet Opta Analyst’s title model gave Arsenal a narrow projected edge over City. The difference is a useful reminder: the team leading the standings, the team showing the best early results and the team a model rates most likely to win are not necessarily the same.
This is an early snapshot, not a prediction of the final champion. Here is how to compare the contenders using form, squad depth and the fixture schedule without treating five games as a verdict.
Who are the Premier League title contenders after five matches?
At the five-match cutoff reported by Opta Analyst on September 21, 2026, Manchester City were first in the league table, Arsenal were second, and Brighton and Brentford had also made strong starts. Opta’s model rated Arsenal and City as the leading title candidates, with Liverpool further back. The official Premier League page’s retrieved table likewise showed City first, Arsenal second and Brighton third.
| Team or measure | Five-matchday snapshot | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Manchester City | Five wins from five; first in the table | Best start by results at this cutoff. |
| Arsenal | Three points behind City; Opta title probability 43.7% | Second in the table, but narrowly first in Opta’s model projection. |
| Manchester City, model estimate | Opta title probability 39.8% | A model estimate, not an observed chance or guarantee. |
| Liverpool | Opta title probability 5.7%; three draws in its first five matches | Third in the model at this snapshot, at a substantial distance from Arsenal and City. |
| Manchester United | League-leading 113 total shots and 182 opposition-box touches; five points | Attacking volume did not translate into a comparable points return, and these figures alone do not establish a title challenge. |
Opta Analyst reported the table context and model figures after five matchdays; the percentages are the model’s estimates for that snapshot, not outcomes. The figures should not be treated as directly comparable with Opta’s 38.0% pre-season simulation share for Arsenal, which was produced before the season began.

How to judge form without overrating a short run
Start with the league table, but do not stop at points. Check goal difference, goals scored and conceded, then look at the opponents in the sequence. A team can collect wins against weaker opposition or have its results shaped by a small number of close matches; a short run is not enough to establish a durable level.
Rank #2
- Results: Points and wins tell you what a team has achieved so far.
- Goal balance: Goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference add context to the points tally.
- Opponent sequence: Consider who each team has played before comparing streaks.
- Underlying indicators: If using measures such as shots or touches in the opposition box, name the provider and sample period. Such measures can add context, but they do not replace results or prove a title challenge.
- Forecasts: Keep a model probability separate from the table. Opta’s September estimates were projections that its article said would evolve as more data arrived.
Manchester United’s five-point return alongside the league’s highest shot and opposition-box-touch totals illustrates why volume and results should be read together. It does not, by itself, make United a title contender.
How to compare squad depth
Squad depth is not just the number of players available. The useful question is whether a team has capable replacements in high-impact roles—and whether those players can cover the role without forcing a major change in how the side plays.
- Identify the positions where an absence would most affect the team’s approach.
- Check whether a credible alternative can perform the same role, rather than simply counting players listed in that position.
- Separate confirmed injuries and suspensions from speculation; give preference to current club or league announcements.
- Consider returning players, but distinguish a return to availability from being ready to start or play regularly.
- Account for rotation demands if a club is also playing in Europe or domestic cups.
Opta’s August 14, 2026 pre-season discussion raised William Saliba’s absence as an Arsenal concern and discussed Manchester City’s midfield changes, Liverpool’s defensive additions and Mohamed Salah’s departure. Those points are pre-season context, not a current October injury report or a complete assessment of each club’s available replacements. Read Opta Analyst’s pre-season contender analysis.
A reliable, current position-by-position depth comparison is not established by the available snapshots. Avoid claiming one club has the best depth without checking up-to-date availability and replacement options across the relevant positions.
How to assess the fixture schedule
For an October comparison, talk about upcoming fixtures or a fixture run—not the season’s “run-in,” which normally means the closing stretch. Start with the official Premier League fixture list, then check how league dates interact with European and domestic-cup matches and international breaks.
- Use the official fixture list to confirm each opponent and match date.
- Compare rest days between matches and identify stretches with several games close together.
- Note long away runs and clusters of matches against strong opponents.
- Check European and domestic-cup commitments, plus international breaks, when judging recovery and rotation demands.
- Recheck the schedule as matches are played or rescheduled; fixture difficulty changes with the calendar and results.
There is no established, consistent fixture-difficulty ranking for every contender in the available comparison. Calling one club’s remaining calendar “easy” without stating a method would overstate what the schedule alone shows. Managerial changes, substantial squad turnover and European commitments can add uncertainty to an early-season comparison. Opta’s pre-season article discussed management changes at several large clubs and the planning demands European football can create. These are relevant context, not proof that a team will succeed or struggle. Transfer status, player availability and tactical adaptation should be checked against current club announcements before drawing a team-specific conclusion.
What the five-matchday comparison can—and cannot—tell you
At this cutoff, City had the strongest actual league position, while Arsenal had the highest title probability in Opta’s model. Liverpool remained in the model’s leading group but well behind those two. Brighton and Brentford’s strong starts warranted attention, but five matches alone cannot establish that either will sustain a title challenge through the season.
These are different verdicts, based on different evidence. The table records points already earned; form describes a short stretch of performance; a model estimates a future outcome using its assumptions and data. As matches, injuries and schedules change, all three views can change too.
