There is no defensible, current “top five” ranking of portable PS5 monitors from the available manufacturer and console documentation. The reliable way to choose one is to verify the exact model’s HDMI input, PS5-tested resolution and refresh-rate modes, power arrangement, and audio options before buying. Sony confirms that PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz output, but that does not mean a portable monitor accepts 4K at 120Hz. A good travel setup can work very well when the monitor has a documented HDMI path, the right cable, and its own suitable power source.
Can a portable monitor run a PS5?
Yes, provided the monitor accepts the PS5’s signal through a documented HDMI input and can be powered independently. The console sends video over HDMI; a USB-C-shaped socket on a monitor is not automatically a video input.
What the PS5 can output
Sony states that the PS5 supports the HDMI 2.1 specification and 4K 120Hz video output. That is a capability of the console, not a promise that every portable display can receive or show that signal. The monitor, its HDMI input, the cable, and the selected PS5 video mode must all be compatible.
Why the monitor’s headline refresh rate is not enough

Why is an honest “top five” list difficult here?
A useful ranking needs comparable evidence for five current models: exact model numbers, current availability, PS5-supported modes, port and cable details, power requirements, and like-for-like reviews. Those facts are not established consistently enough to rank five portable monitors without guessing. Current prices and stock also change by market and date.

2. PS5-tested resolution and refresh rate
Write down the exact mode you want, such as 4K at 120Hz or 1080p at 120Hz, then look for confirmation that the monitor accepts it through HDMI from a PS5 or comparable console. Treat the panel’s maximum figure as a starting point, not proof.
For 4K 120Hz, Sony recommends checking display support, using a suitable high-speed HDMI cable, connecting the PS5 directly to the display, and reviewing the console’s video-output settings. A portable monitor that tops out at 1080p cannot be made into a 4K display by changing a PS5 setting.

HDMI carries the picture and sound signal; it should not be assumed to power the monitor. NexiGo’s NG17FG FAQ explicitly says that HDMI connections do not supply power and instructs users to connect HDMI for video and USB-C separately for power.
Check whether the monitor uses USB-C power, a dedicated adapter, or another input; whether the adapter is included; and whether your intended battery or wall charger can supply the stated requirements. A monitor that works from a laptop’s USB-C port may still need a separate power connection when paired with a PS5.
4. Resolution, brightness, viewing angle, and size
Resolution determines image detail, while brightness and viewing angle affect whether the screen remains usable in a hotel room, on a desk, or outdoors. Screen size changes both immersion and luggage space. Compare manufacturer figures under the same assumptions and remember that a specification does not describe real-world image quality by itself.

5. VRR and HDR
Variable refresh rate and high-dynamic-range support can improve motion or contrast, but a manufacturer’s claim is not the same as a PS5-verified mode. Confirm which HDMI input supports each feature and at what resolution and refresh rate. If the documentation does not identify PS5 support, describe the feature as claimed by the manufacturer rather than guaranteed for your console.

6. Audio and physical support
Check for built-in speakers and a headphone output if you do not plan to carry separate speakers. Also inspect the stand or protective cover: it should hold the display at a usable angle without relying on a loose case or an unstable improvised support. Audio and stand details are easy to overlook because they are not reflected in the panel’s resolution number.
How do you connect a PS5 to a portable monitor?
- Identify the monitor’s video input. Confirm whether it is full-size HDMI or mini-HDMI and verify in the manual that the port accepts console video.
- Prepare the correct cable. Use a suitable high-speed HDMI cable for demanding modes. If the monitor uses mini-HDMI, use the correct HDMI-to-mini-HDMI cable and check whether it is included.
- Connect power separately. Attach the monitor to its specified USB-C power source or adapter. Do not expect the PS5’s HDMI port to power it.
- Connect directly. For troubleshooting 4K 120Hz, Sony advises connecting the PS5 directly to the display rather than routing it through an unverified switch, receiver, or capture device.
- Power on the monitor and select its HDMI input. Choose the input that corresponds to the cable. If the screen reports “no signal,” recheck the selected source and both cable ends.
- Set the PS5 video output. Open the PS5 video-output settings and select an available resolution and refresh mode supported by both devices. If a mode is unavailable, do not force it; return to the monitor’s documented input limits.
- Test the intended game mode. Confirm that the PS5 reports the expected resolution and refresh rate, then test audio through the monitor speakers or headphone output if available.
How can you verify 120Hz rather than trusting the box?
Start with the monitor’s exact model number, not just the product family name. Find the input table or manual section that lists resolution and refresh rate for HDMI, then look for a PS5 or console compatibility statement. Finally, check the PS5’s video-output information after connecting directly.
If the monitor accepts 120Hz only at 1080p, that is different from accepting 4K at 120Hz. Record the complete mode—resolution, refresh rate, HDR or VRR status, and input—when comparing candidates. A product page that lists only “120Hz” leaves those important conditions unstated.

That documentation makes the model a useful example of a console-compatible connection path; it does not establish the NG17FG as one of the five best portable monitors, prove every PS5 video mode, or establish current price and availability. Check the current product page and manual for the exact unit before purchasing.
What should a final comparison table include?
Before choosing between candidates, create a row for each exact model and record the following fields. If a manufacturer does not state a value, mark it “not stated” instead of filling the gap with the panel’s maximum rating or a seller’s assumption.

“No signal” appears

The monitor turns on but shuts down or flickers

The picture works but sound does not
Verify whether the monitor actually has speakers, whether its volume is muted, and whether a headphone jack is available. If the model provides no audio output, plan for a separate audio path rather than treating silent HDMI video as a cable failure.
The image is cropped, washed out, or unexpectedly dim
Check the selected resolution, HDR setting, and the monitor’s picture mode. Portable displays can expose different capabilities on different inputs; use the manufacturer’s HDMI specifications and disable a feature temporarily to isolate the cause.
Is a portable monitor worth it for PS5 travel?
