Using a VPN to access PokerStars from a blocked location is neither a compliant nor a dependable solution. PokerStars’ terms prohibit disguising or manipulating your location, including with a VPN, and the operator says it can restrict, suspend, or close accounts for that conduct. A VPN may also prevent you from connecting, joining poker tables, or depositing. Whether you may play is determined by your real, current location and the local licence there—not by the country shown by a VPN server.
Can I use a VPN with PokerStars?
No. PokerStars’ General Terms require you to live in a jurisdiction the operator accepts, use the service lawfully there, and avoid attempts to bypass geographic controls. Section 9.2 expressly treats manipulating location information, “such as by using a VPN,” as circumvention and a Prohibited Event.
PokerStars’ Help article Using a virtual private network (VPN) or proxy server with PokerStars gives the same practical advice: “No, we don’t recommend using a proxy server or a VPN when accessing PokerStars services.” The article warns that these tools can block connections to PokerStars servers, prevent play at poker tables, and stop deposits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat means a VPN is a poor choice for both compliance and reliability. It does not transfer a licence from one jurisdiction to another, and a successful connection would not make play legal in your actual location.

What determines whether PokerStars is legal where I am?
Your physical location at the time of play and the licensing rules in that jurisdiction determine whether real-money PokerStars services are available. A VPN exit server, billing address, or account setting cannot replace the legal requirement to be in an accepted location.
Use the live prohibited-jurisdictions list
PokerStars maintains a prohibited-jurisdictions page that is the operational reference for availability. It separates restrictions by service, because a location may be blocked for real-money play, freemium activity, play-money activity, or several of these categories. The list can change as laws, licences, and regulatory decisions change, so check it immediately before registering, depositing, or playing rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.
The United States is not one nationwide rule
PokerStars’ current list identifies the USA as blocked except where services are locally licensed. A player therefore has to check the rules and licensing for the specific state or other local jurisdiction, not assume that an American VPN server or an out-of-state trip creates access.
Real-money and free modes can have different treatment
Do not assume that switching from real-money tables to freemium or play-money games removes location controls. PokerStars’ list identifies restrictions at those service levels in various countries and territories. Read the entry for your current location and the exact product you intend to use.
How should I check access before I deposit?
Complete these checks while connected normally from the place where you intend to play. They reduce the risk of opening an account or sending funds to a service you cannot legally use.
- Identify your actual jurisdiction. Use the country—and, where relevant, state or territory—where you are physically located when playing.
- Read the current prohibited-jurisdictions entry. Confirm whether PokerStars permits the particular service: real-money, freemium, or play-money.
- Confirm local licensing. Where access is limited to locally licensed markets, verify that PokerStars holds the required licence for your specific jurisdiction.
- Review verification requirements. Be prepared for identity, residence, and geolocation checks before a deposit or withdrawal is approved.
- Use an ordinary connection. Do not use a VPN, proxy, or other tool intended to make the service believe you are elsewhere.
- Save evidence of the rule you checked. Because the list can change, note the date and the applicable entry before you fund an account.
What happens if PokerStars detects VPN or proxy use?
The terms describe a range of consequences rather than a guaranteed single penalty. A Prohibited Event can lead to account restriction, suspension, closure, or reporting, and access to funds may be limited while an account is suspended.

Connection failure can come first
PokerStars may block the connection before any account action occurs. Its support guidance specifically mentions inability to connect to servers, inability to play at tables, and failed deposits when a VPN or proxy is in use. Repeated retries or changing servers does not cure the underlying location issue.

If an account is reviewed, the operator can require proof that the player resides in an accepted jurisdiction and is complying with local rules. A restriction can therefore affect access to the account and funds at the same time. Do not deposit money while testing whether a VPN happens to work.
There is no safe “low-profile” configuration
Using a nearby server, split tunnelling, a browser extension, a residential proxy, or a VPN router still involves manipulating location information. The terms do not create an exception based on the provider, server distance, connection speed, or device.
What VPN works with PokerStars?
No VPN can make prohibited play lawful or guarantee access. The relevant comparison is not server count, latency, price, or whether a provider advertises streaming or gaming support; it is whether PokerStars is licensed and available at your real location.
| Situation | What PokerStars availability means | Compliant action |
|---|---|---|
| Physically in a jurisdiction where PokerStars is locally licensed | Real-money access may be available subject to local rules, verification, and the current jurisdiction listing. | Connect without a VPN or proxy and complete the required checks. |
| Physically in a prohibited jurisdiction | Real-money play is not permitted; the listing may also restrict freemium or play-money services. | Do not attempt to bypass the block. Wait until you are lawfully in an accepted jurisdiction. |
| Visiting a permitted jurisdiction temporarily | Use may be allowed only if PokerStars’ services are permitted in the country you are visiting and you meet its verification requirements. | Check the visitor location, use a normal connection, and follow any local geolocation checks. |
| Account registered in a prohibited jurisdiction | The account can remain restricted even while you are temporarily in a permitted country. | Contact PokerStars about the move or account status; do not create a false location with a VPN. |
These are availability categories, not a promise that every account in an accepted market will pass verification. Licensing, age, identity, payment, and responsible-gambling controls can impose additional requirements.

Travel is possible only when PokerStars services are permitted in the country you are visiting. You must comply with the visited country’s laws and current verification or regulatory requirements, and you must not play where online gaming is illegal.
Before you leave
- Check the live prohibited-jurisdictions page for the destination, including the exact service you use.
- Review whether your account will require a new location or identity check.
- Plan to connect directly from the destination rather than routing traffic through your home country.
When you arrive
Open the PokerStars software, app, or website without a VPN or proxy and follow any location or identity prompts. A permitted destination does not override a restriction attached to an account registered in a prohibited jurisdiction.
If the destination is blocked
Do not play, deposit, or try alternate servers. A failed connection is preferable to creating a compliance record that can trigger a suspension or closure.
What if I permanently move to another country?
A permanent move should be reported to PokerStars through the software, app, or website. The operator’s migration guidance indicates that an account from a prohibited jurisdiction may stay restricted even after the player visits an allowed one; a genuine relocation review may be necessary.

Documents a move review may require
- Government-issued identification.
- Proof of address in the new jurisdiction.
- Bank-statement documentation supporting the residence or payment details.
Provide current, matching information and wait for the account decision before depositing or playing. A VPN cannot substitute for residence evidence and can make a review more difficult.
How do I fix PokerStars connection or deposit problems linked to a VPN?
Start by removing the location-masking service, then allow PokerStars to evaluate your real connection. The operator’s support instructions provide a clear escalation path.
- Disconnect the VPN or proxy on the device, browser, router, or network profile you used.
- Close and reopen the PokerStars software or website from the ordinary local connection.
- Retry the connection, table entry, or deposit only after the VPN or proxy is fully disabled.
- If the problem continues without a VPN or proxy, contact PokerStars Support.
- Include screenshots and the requested log files so Support can investigate the remaining technical or account issue.
Do not switch to another VPN as a troubleshooting step. If the service is unavailable at your location, a different server only changes the apparent address and does not change the legal position.

Which access options are actually compliant?
There are only two dependable options: use PokerStars from a jurisdiction where its service is legally permitted and licensed, or wait until you are in one. In either case, connect without tools that falsify your location and complete the operator’s verification process.
For residents
Verify your local market before creating or funding an account. Keep your identity, residence, and payment information accurate and consistent, because mismatches can trigger review even without VPN use.
For travelers
Check the destination before departure and again on arrival. Laws and the prohibited-jurisdictions list can change during a trip, so an earlier check is not a permanent authorization.
For movers
Notify PokerStars and request the appropriate account migration or residence update. Continue only after the operator confirms that your account and new location are eligible.
What should I remember before playing in 2026?
- A VPN exit country does not establish legal access; your real current location does.
- PokerStars treats VPN-based location manipulation as circumvention under Section 9.2 of its General Terms.
- VPNs and proxies can block servers, poker tables, and deposits even before an account review.
- The prohibited-jurisdictions page is the current practical reference and may change.
- Travel is allowed only in permitted destinations, while a permanent move requires an account and residence update.
- Restriction or suspension can limit access to the account and funds, so never use a deposit to test a VPN workaround.
FAQ
Does play-money PokerStars avoid the location rules?
Not necessarily. PokerStars’ jurisdiction list distinguishes among real-money, freemium, and play-money services, and some locations are restricted for more than one category. Check the entry for the exact mode you plan to use.

Can I use my existing account during a short holiday?
Only if PokerStars permits its services in the country you are visiting and your account passes any required checks. A short stay does not authorize play in a prohibited destination, and a VPN should not be used to make the account appear at home.
Why did my account stay restricted after I crossed a border?
PokerStars can associate an account with its registered jurisdiction, and migration guidance says an account from a prohibited jurisdiction may remain restricted while you are visiting an allowed one. Contact Support and be ready to prove your current residence rather than trying another connection route.
What should I send Support when a normal connection still fails?
Explain that all VPN and proxy services are disabled, then provide the screenshots and log files PokerStars requests. Those records let Support separate a technical connection fault from a location, verification, or account restriction.
