When a Pokémon game shuts down, the result depends on which layer is ending. Your shared Pokémon Trainer Central login may remain available while the closed game’s server saves, inventory, friends list, or watch history become inaccessible. A successor migration can preserve selected data, but it is an announced, game-specific feature—not an automatic right. Pokémon TCG Online moved eligible collection data to Pokémon TCG Live; Pokémon TCG Card Dex offered no export; and Pokémon Rumble Rush could not be played even from an installed copy after service ended. Purchases, refunds, and recurring subscriptions are separate questions governed by the game notice, your app store, and local law.
What exactly shuts down when a Pokémon game ends?
A shutdown usually disables the game service first: authentication for that title, online matches, cloud saves, inventories, and server-side purchases. That does not necessarily delete the broader Pokémon account used to sign in to multiple products. It also does not guarantee that a locally installed app will keep working, because many games require a live server at launch.
Think of the service as four separate layers:
- Shared login: a Pokémon Trainer Central, Nintendo, Google, or eligible Apple account may continue to exist.
- Game access: the specific title may stop connecting, updating, or launching.
- Server data: progress, collections, friends, decks, achievements, and account history may be retained, exported, migrated, or deleted according to that title’s notice.
- Money and billing: virtual currency, purchased items, refunds, and recurring subscriptions follow separate rules.
Because these layers can produce different outcomes, an intact login is not proof that a closed game’s progress survives, and a lost game profile is not proof that your entire Pokémon account was deleted.

Usually, a game shutdown does not by itself establish that the shared Pokémon account is deleted. Pokémon’s Pokémon TV sunset guidance explicitly separated the continuing Pokémon Trainer Central account from the app-specific watch history: the login remained usable for other connected services, while the history tied to Pokémon TV became inaccessible. That is an account-versus-service example, not a promise that every game preserves its data. Read the individual game’s notice for its retention policy.

Do not create a new login before checking the notice. A successor migration may require the same account that held the original game data. For Pokémon TCG Online, eligible collection data was associated with the same Pokémon Trainer Central account used in Pokémon TCG Live; signing into a different account would not recreate the old collection.
What happened to Pokémon games and services that already shut down?
The examples below show why no single “Pokémon shutdown” rule exists.

Pokémon TCG Online to Pokémon TCG Live
Pokémon Support says eligible Pokémon TCG Online collection data can be moved to Pokémon TCG Live with the same Pokémon Trainer Central account. The Online servers closed on June 5, 2023, and Live launched globally on June 8, 2023. The sunset FAQ maintained by Pokémon Support in 2026 says there is no current migration deadline, but Pokémon reserves the right to announce one and says it will provide advance notice. The transfer is a conversion of selected data, not a complete clone of the old account. Pokémon Support states that up to four copies of a unique eligible Pokémon TCG card can transfer, subject to special-category limits. Cards beyond the stated limits do not transfer and receive no Credits. Some earlier card series are excluded, while others may transfer but not be playable; an old FAQ’s wording about a future update should not be read as a guarantee of present-day playability.

Many card sleeves, coins, and deck boxes transfer at no more than one of each item. Currencies, friends lists, saved decks, avatars, specified cards, and unopened products are excluded as possessions. Export any deck-list text locally before migration because saved decks do not automatically transfer.
Unopened products are converted under a tiered allocation rather than delivered as unopened items. Pokémon’s sunset FAQ lists allocations from 500 for one to nine eligible unopened items up to 12,400 for 125 or more. The sunset FAQ calls this allocation “Crystals,” while a separately maintained migration FAQ calls it “Trainer Points”; because the official pages use different terms, describe it as the tiered in-game allocation unless the current label is confirmed in the game. Neither page promises cash compensation for excluded products. Accounts banned from Pokémon TCG Online do not migrate, according to Pokémon Support’s exclusion guidance: official migration and exclusion details.
Pokémon TCG Card Dex
Pokémon TCG Card Dex was a collection-tracking app, not Pokémon TCG Online. Pokémon said the service would be deactivated on September 20, 2023 and that its data would not be exportable or transferable in any way. The official wording is direct: “Pokémon TCG Card Dex data will not be exportable or transferrable in any way.” Pokémon suggested using its Trading Card Database and starting a new TCG Live collection with code cards from physical products; those suggestions do not recover the Card Dex data. Pokémon Rumble Rush
Pokémon’s July 21, 2020 closure notice says first-time installation and updates became unavailable, previously installed copies could not be played, and unused Poké Diamonds could no longer be used or redeemed. The notice’s exact warning is: “You also cannot play any previously installed version of the app.” This documents Rumble Rush’s server-dependent outcome; it is not evidence that every Pokémon title behaves identically. Pokémon TCG Pocket as a preparation example
Pokémon TCG Pocket has not been announced as shutting down in the information available here, but its account controls illustrate two points that matter in any service. Linking a Nintendo, Google, or eligible Apple account can transfer save data between devices. In-app deletion of save data is irreversible and removes progress, items, and Poké Gold. A premium pass is tied to the subscribing store account, so deleting the app or save data does not cancel renewal; cancellation must be handled through the relevant app store. These device-transfer and billing rules are not a promise that Pocket data would survive a future service closure. What happens to Pokémon purchases, virtual currency, and refunds?
There is no universal Pokémon refund or compensation policy that applies to every game and country. Identify the title, the billing platform, and your region, then read the end-of-service notice and applicable terms. Preserve receipts for purchases that were not delivered or were made shortly before closure, and contact the game’s official support or the app store; do not assume that a shutdown automatically creates a refund.
As one regional example, Pokémon’s UK terms generally reject refunds for virtual content and compensation for unused virtual content when an account closes, while preserving rights that local law cannot remove. Unused virtual currency may become unusable when the server closes, as happened with Rumble Rush’s Poké Diamonds. A successor may convert selected items, as TCG Online did, but conversion limits and excluded categories matter more than the fact that a migration exists. No cited notice promises cash payment for excluded TCG Online cards or unopened products.

Does uninstalling the app cancel a Pokémon subscription?
No. Uninstalling an app or deleting its save data normally does not stop a recurring subscription billed through an app-store account. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s support guidance says its premium pass remains tied to the subscribing store account; open the Apple App Store or Google Play subscription settings for the account that is charged and cancel renewal there. If you paid through another platform, use that platform’s subscription controls and keep the cancellation confirmation.
What should you do before a Pokémon game shuts down?
Start with the exact title and region. The same franchise can have different rules, deadlines, and successors, and a notice for one app cannot be applied to another.
- Find the official end-of-service notice. Record the server-close date, final purchase date, last login date, migration eligibility, deadline, remaining-balance instructions, and any regional terms.
- Verify the linked account. Sign in with the account that actually holds the game data. Do not switch accounts while troubleshooting a migration.
- Export what the game expressly supports. For TCG Online, save deck-list text locally before migration because saved decks are not transferred automatically. If a notice says data cannot be exported, screenshots or personal notes may preserve reference information but cannot recreate server entitlements.
- Inventory paid content. List virtual currency, premium passes, unopened products, and recent transactions. Save receipts, order IDs, and platform account details.
- Check recurring billing separately. Cancel subscriptions in the store account that bills them; uninstalling is not cancellation.
- Complete migration while access remains. Follow only the successor’s official process, and confirm that the destination account shows the transferred content before assuming it is complete.
- Contact support promptly about exceptions. Use the game’s official support channel or payment platform for missing deliveries, duplicate charges, or an announced migration problem. State your region, account identifier, transaction date, and receipt number without posting credentials publicly.
Can closed Pokémon game data be recovered later?
Only if the operator has provided a live recovery, export, or successor process. TCG Online’s announced migration is an example of a supported path; Card Dex’s explicit no-transfer policy is the opposite. Once a server-only game such as Rumble Rush can no longer launch, an installed copy does not create an offline archive that you can use to restore progress.

How can you tell which outcome applies to your game?
Use these questions in order:
- Is the notice about the exact game, or only another Pokémon service?
- Does it name a successor, export format, or migration window?
- Which account must be linked, and are banned or inactive accounts excluded?
- Are progress, items, currency, friends, decks, and unopened products treated separately?
- Can the installed app launch without contacting the server?
- What does the notice say about subscriptions, refunds, and unused balances in your region?
- Is a stated deadline current, or does the operator reserve the right to change it?
The safest conclusion is therefore game-specific: a shared login may survive, but access, progress, items, and money require separate confirmation in the title’s official notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my Pokémon Trainer Central password still work after a game closes?
A service closure does not automatically prove that the shared login was deleted. You may still be able to use the credentials for other connected Pokémon services, but a successful login cannot restore a game profile that the operator no longer serves.
Can screenshots prove ownership of lost Pokémon game items?
Screenshots can document what appeared on your device, but they do not function as a server-side transfer or entitlement. Keep receipts and transaction identifiers as well, because support or the payment platform may require those details for a billing investigation.

Install the successor or account-linking app only from its official store listing, then use the same linked account and region used on the old device. Device backups may restore app settings, but they cannot recreate data that was stored exclusively on a closed server.
Can my family member’s account receive my migrated collection?
Migration rules normally bind the destination data to the eligible original account rather than allowing a gift or merge. Do not attempt an account transfer unless the game’s official instructions explicitly provide one, because using a different login can leave the collection unavailable.
