Start with a project-specific environment, add tests and automated checks, use Python’s built-in diagnostics, and configure new packages with pyproject.toml. Choose editors and third-party tools for your team’s needs rather than assuming one tool is best for everyone.
Build a workflow around the project
Python development spans editing, version control, environments and dependencies, testing, debugging, code quality, packaging, and delivery. These pieces work best as a connected workflow: dependencies should be reproducible, checks should be easy to run locally and in continuous integration (CI), and package configuration should match the project’s build needs.
There is no single required set of tools. The Python Packaging Authority (PyPA) explicitly avoids blanket recommendations for many packaging tasks because users have different needs and the ecosystem supports multiple tools and build backends. Its tool recommendations distinguish common choices without naming a universal winner.
Set up an isolated Python environment
For a straightforward project, Python’s built-in venv module provides a practical starting point. A virtual environment keeps project packages separate from other projects and the system Python installation.

Install the packages the project needs, then document or lock dependencies using the workflow your project and team have chosen.
PyPA identifies venv (included with Python) and virtualenv (a PyPA project) as manual environment options. The right dependency-management approach depends on factors such as project constraints, repeatability, team familiarity, and compatibility with existing CI. Tools including pip, uv, and Poetry appear in current Python learning resources, but the sources here do not establish a current head-to-head performance ranking. Check each tool’s documentation for its supported features and compatibility.

Choose an editor your team can work in
Visual Studio Code with its Python extension and PyCharm are common options. A familiar editor can also work; the important point is that it supports the project’s needs and helps developers run code, tests, and checks without unnecessary friction. Real Python’s Python development tools tutorials cover editors alongside environments, testing, linting, type checking, packaging, and deployment.
When comparing editors or IDEs, consider whether the team can use the same Python interpreter and environment, how easily it can run the project’s tests and quality checks, and whether its features fit the codebase. A popular editor is not automatically the best fit for every project.

Add tests and code-quality checks
Tests and automated checks are most useful when developers can run them consistently before changes are merged. Python includes unittest for tests and doctest for checking examples in documentation against actual behavior. The Python 3.14 development tools documentation also describes pydoc, which generates documentation from module contents.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Third-party tools can extend the workflow. Ruff is a linter and formatter example; mypy and Pyright are static type-checking options; pytest is a test framework. Pick checks that serve a clear purpose, confirm their compatibility with the project, and agree with the team on how to run them. Do not add tools simply because they are popular.
Once checks are established locally, run them in CI so proposed changes are evaluated consistently. CI should reflect the project’s actual requirements, including its supported Python versions and the checks the team expects. Tool choice alone does not improve code: useful checks need to be configured, run, and acted on.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Python’s built-in diagnostics when investigating problems
Python Development Mode adds runtime checks that are too expensive to enable by default. As the Python Software Foundation’s Python 3.14 documentation explains, these checks can surface issues such as resource warnings. Enable the mode at startup with python -X dev, or set PYTHONDEVMODE=1 in the environment before starting Python.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Development Mode also enables diagnostic behavior such as faulthandler and allocator debugging. It does not enable tracemalloc by default, because that feature has performance and memory overhead. Use Development Mode during investigation or in targeted CI runs; it can help reveal problems but does not prove that a program is correct.
Configure new packages with pyproject.toml
For a new package, use pyproject.toml as the central configuration file. PyPA’s guide to writing pyproject.toml says that a [build-system] table declaring the build backend and build requirements should always be present, and recommends using [project] for new projects to hold common metadata.
Existing projects using setup.cfg or setup.py are not invalidated: PyPA says these legacy configuration files remain valid. setup.py may still be useful when programmatic configuration is needed, for example when building C extensions. Packaging behavior can vary by backend, so consult the documentation for the backend you choose, such as setuptools or Poetry.
Adopt specialized tools only when the task calls for them
Some tools address narrower needs rather than baseline Python development. Microsoft’s Python developer portal lists Pyright as a standards-based static type checker designed for performance and large source bases, and Playwright for Python for browser automation. The portal also includes AI-oriented projects such as PyRIT and GraphRAG. These are examples tied to particular tasks, not requirements for every Python developer.

Before adopting any tool, check that it supports the project’s Python versions and operating systems, works with its dependencies, fits the team’s editor and CI workflow, and is maintained with limitations documented. Prefer a small set of checks people will actually use over an elaborate stack that adds setup work without solving a project need.
