PlayStation Network is not showing a verified widespread outage as of August 9, 2026. Sony’s official service page lists Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Store as “Service is running.” An independent outage monitor also reports no active PSN problem.
If your PS5 or PS4 still cannot sign in, the failure is more likely to involve your console, home network, account, a particular game, or a license check. Here is what happened, how to verify the service status, and what to try without making the problem worse.
Is PlayStation Network down right now?
No broad PSN outage is currently verified. Check Sony’s official PlayStation Service Status page before changing settings on your console. It separates the network into four categories:

| Category | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Account management | Sign-in, account settings, and related account actions |
| Gaming and social | Online multiplayer, friends, parties, messaging, and related features |
| PlayStation Video | Video purchases and streaming features |
| PlayStation Store | Browsing, purchases, downloads, and store services |
A third-party outage tracker can be useful for spotting a sudden increase in user reports, but a report spike does not prove that Sony’s entire network is offline. Compare those reports with Sony’s status page and with what is failing on your own console.

What happened during the latest major outage?
The latest widespread incident occurred on Friday, July 24, 2026. Users reported problems signing in, playing online, managing accounts, accessing PlayStation Video, using the PlayStation Store, and using PlayStation Direct. The disruption lasted approximately seven hours according to independent outage monitoring.
Sony later changed its public status page to “All services are up and running.” No detailed, Sony-confirmed root-cause explanation was identified in the support and news material reviewed. Claims that the outage was definitely caused by AWS or a PS5 system-software update should therefore be treated as speculation, not established fact.
How to check whether the problem is PSN or your connection
- Open Sony’s PlayStation Service Status page.
- Check each service category instead of relying on a general outage headline.
- Try another PSN-dependent feature. For example, check the Store, your friends list, or an online game.
- Run the built-in connection test on your console.
- Check the specific game’s server status if only one title is failing. A game publisher can have an outage while PSN remains operational.
If the official page says the services are running and several PSN features fail on multiple devices, a delayed regional issue is still possible. Wait a little and check again rather than repeatedly changing network settings. If only one console or one game fails, troubleshoot locally first.

1. Test the internet connection
On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. This checks the console’s internet access and its connection to PlayStation services.
If the test fails, reconnect the console to your network:
Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection
Select your Wi-Fi network and enter its password again. If possible, test with an Ethernet cable. A wired test can quickly show whether Wi-Fi interference or a weak wireless signal is involved.

Restart the PS5 normally. If the error appears to be a network connection failure, turn off the router for five minutes, turn it back on, wait for the connection to return, and try the PS5 again. This is Sony’s recommended sequence for error WS-116414-7, along with checking PSN status first.

Restarting a router can repair an individual connection problem, expired network state, or failed DNS session. It cannot restore a Sony-side outage, so it should not be presented as a fix for a confirmed PSN failure.
3. Check for a PS5 system update
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install any available update, then restart the console if prompted. An outdated system can prevent online features from working correctly.
PS4 fixes when PSN is online
Reconnect the PS4 to Wi-Fi through Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi. Select your network and enter the wireless password. You can also use a wired connection if your router is close enough.

Make sure the PS4 system software is current. Sony requires the console software to be up to date before online features can be used. If the PS4 cannot complete an update over the network, check Sony’s support instructions for an offline USB update rather than downloading an update file from an unofficial source.
Why one game may still be unavailable after PSN recovers
A PSN outage does not make every game unusable, and PSN recovering does not guarantee that every feature immediately works. The result depends on the game and the feature being used.
- Offline-capable, installed games may continue to launch.
- Online-only games may remain unavailable because their own servers require a connection.
- Multiplayer, parties, messaging, cloud saves, trophies, and account features can fail independently.
- Store purchases and downloads may be delayed even after sign-in works.
- Digital games may require an ownership or license check.
On PS5, Console Sharing and Offline Play allows downloaded games and media to be used offline on the enabled console. Check it at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play > Enable.
Sony says this option is automatically enabled on the first PS5 used to sign in, but it may not be enabled on a replacement or secondary console. If you changed consoles, this setting can explain why a downloaded game worked offline before but now shows an entitlement or license error.

If a digital game is installed but displays a license or entitlement error, restore the licenses after confirming that your account is signed in.

On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses > Restore.
On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
License restoration is not a guaranteed solution during an active Sony outage because the console may still be unable to contact the required service. It is more useful when PSN is operating and one or more digital games cannot validate ownership.

| Do not assume | Why |
|---|---|
| “PlayStation servers are still down everywhere.” | Sony’s status page currently reports the main services as running. |
| “Restarting the router fixes a confirmed PSN outage.” | It can repair your connection, but not a Sony-side service failure. |
| “Every game stops when PSN goes down.” | Offline play depends on the game, installation, licenses, and console sharing or primary-console settings. |
| “A factory reset is the next outage fix.” | Resetting a PS5 or initializing a PS4 can delete user and game data and cannot be undone. |
Do not initialize the console just because you cannot sign in. First verify the service status, test the connection, restart the console and router, update the system software, and investigate the specific error code. A factory reset is a last-resort repair for a separate console problem, not a normal response to a PSN outage.
FAQ
Are PlayStation servers down right now?
As of August 9, 2026, Sony’s official PlayStation Service Status page lists Account Management, Gaming and Social, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Store as “Service is running.” Individual games, regions, accounts, or home networks can still have separate problems.
When was the last major PlayStation Network outage?
The latest widespread outage occurred on July 24, 2026. Reports included sign-in, online gaming, account management, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct problems. Independent monitoring estimated that it lasted about seven hours.
Why can’t I play a digital PS5 game when PSN is working?
The console may be unable to verify the game license, or Console Sharing and Offline Play may not be enabled on that PS5. Check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then try Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.

Will restarting my router fix PlayStation Network?
Restarting the router can fix an individual internet or console connection problem, but it cannot repair a confirmed Sony-side outage. Check Sony’s service status first, then restart the router for five minutes if your PS5 connection test or Sony’s error guidance indicates a local network issue.
The Bottom Line
PlayStation Network is not currently reporting a broad outage as of August 9, 2026, although a particular game, account, region, or connection may still fail. Check Sony’s four service categories first, run the PS5 or PS4 connection test, restart your equipment, and check system software. For digital-game errors, verify Console Sharing and Offline Play and restore licenses. Avoid initializing the console unless you are addressing a separate, well-understood system problem.
