For most PS5 owners, the choice comes down to priorities rather than a universal winner. The current PlayStation PULSE Wireless Headset is the better fit for a Sony-focused setup: it includes PlayStation Link, can play Link and Bluetooth audio simultaneously, and is listed at $99 in Sony’s U.S. catalog. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5P Wireless is the feature-led option if you value a claimed 60-hour battery and more than 100 mobile-app game presets. Both support PS5 3D Audio. The battery figures are manufacturer claims, not matched testing, and SteelSeries’ often-cited $129.99 figure is a 2024 North American launch MSRP rather than a verified October 2026 checkout price.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5P Wireless PS5 players who prioritize longer claimed runtime and per-game EQ presets Up to 60 hours claimed; 100+ mobile-app presets; 265 g listed weight $129.99 North American launch MSRP (2024); current checkout price not established PS5, PC and Bluetooth devices through its wireless dongle or Bluetooth Oct 2026

Which PULSE headset is this comparison about?

The name “PlayStation Pulse” covers several generations. This guide compares Sony’s current PlayStation PULSE Wireless Headset with the PS5-oriented SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5P Wireless. Sony’s catalog also lists PULSE Elite and the older PULSE 3D; their specifications must not be substituted for the current $99 PULSE Wireless.

The current PULSE Wireless product page lists a built-in microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection, PlayStation Link wireless, Bluetooth, PS5 audio/chat balance controls and up to 30 hours of battery life. Its included USB-C PlayStation Link adapter is the normal wireless route to a PS5. Sony’s U.S. headset catalog showed a $99 price when checked; prices can change by region, promotion and stock status.

Nova 5P is the PlayStation version of SteelSeries’ Nova 5 family. The “P” designation identifies the PS5/PlayStation-focused model. SteelSeries identifies the Nova 5X, not the 5P, as the Xbox-compatible variant, so an Xbox buyer should not assume the 5P has the same console support.

Which is better for a PS5 owner?

Choose Nova 5P for endurance and software-based tuning; choose PULSE Wireless for the most direct PlayStation integration and concurrent phone audio. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish a same-conditions winner for sound quality, microphone quality or comfort.

When Nova 5P is the stronger fit

  • Long sessions between charges: SteelSeries claims up to 60 hours, twice Sony’s up-to-30-hour claim for the current PULSE Wireless. Both figures depend on settings and usage; they are not laboratory comparisons.
  • Per-game equalization: SteelSeries says its supported mobile Companion App offers more than 100 game presets. That is useful when you want a published profile for a particular title rather than adjusting a single general EQ.
  • A known listed weight: SteelSeries lists Nova 5P at 265 g. No matched current-PULSE weight or comfort test was established, so the number alone cannot predict which headset will feel better.
  • Fast top-ups: SteelSeries’ 2024 launch material claimed six hours of play after a 15-minute charge. Treat that as a published launch claim, not a guaranteed result in every configuration.

When PULSE Wireless is the stronger fit

  • PlayStation-first controls: Sony lists PS5 audio/chat balance controls and PlayStation Link support, with the required adapter in the box.
  • Phone and PS5 at once: Sony explicitly supports simultaneous PlayStation Link and Bluetooth playback. You can hear console audio while also listening to a paired phone, subject to each source’s volume and mute controls.
  • A lower documented U.S. catalog price: Sony’s catalog listed $99. Nova 5P’s $129.99 figure is a 2024 launch MSRP, not a current October 2026 street-price check, so do not treat it as proof of today’s price gap.
  • A Sony ecosystem: The headset’s controls and adapter are designed around PS5, making it a straightforward choice if you do not need extensive app-based tuning.

How do the wireless connections differ?

The most important distinction is mixing versus switching. PULSE Wireless can play PlayStation Link and Bluetooth simultaneously. Nova 5P’s Quick Switch moves between its 2.4 GHz wireless connection and Bluetooth, but SteelSeries support says “only one can be active at a time.” Quick Switch is therefore a source selector, not a mixer.

PULSE Wireless: concurrent Link and Bluetooth

Connect the supplied PlayStation Link USB-C adapter to the PS5 for game and chat audio, then pair a phone over Bluetooth. The two links can remain active together. This is useful for a call, podcast or music notification while a game is running, although the balance between sources is controlled by the headset, phone and PS5 rather than by a universal mixing standard.

Sony’s adapter is also useful when moving the headset to a computer that has a compatible USB port. Bluetooth remains available for phones and other devices, but a PS5 does not provide ordinary Bluetooth headset pairing as its normal low-latency audio method; use the included Link adapter.

Nova 5P: 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth, one at a time

Use the supplied wireless dongle for PS5 audio. For a phone or other Bluetooth device, use Bluetooth mode and Quick Switch to change sources. SteelSeries’ support documentation describes the feature as switching between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, with only one connection active at a time: it should not be described as simultaneous console-and-phone playback.

For PS5 wireless audio, describe Nova 5P as a dongle-based headset. Do not imply that the console accepts the headset through ordinary Bluetooth pairing, and do not confuse Nova 5P’s Windows Sonar virtual-surround software with a PS5 application.

Do both headsets support PS5 3D Audio?

Yes. Sony lists the current PULSE Wireless as supporting PS5 3D Audio, and SteelSeries says Nova 5P is compatible with PS5 Tempest 3D Audio. The capability comes from the PS5’s audio system; it is not exclusive to Sony’s headset.

On PS5, open Settings → Sound → 3D Audio (Headphones) and complete the console’s personalization steps if you want to use them. The headset does not create a separate Nova-only 3D mode on the console. Nova 5P’s Sonar virtual-surround features belong to Windows software and should not be presented as a PS5 setting.

Neither the supplied specifications nor an independent, same-condition comparison establishes that one model produces better positional imaging, bass or dialogue clarity. Choose based on connection behavior, controls, battery claim and tuning workflow rather than an invented sound-quality ranking.

What are the battery, controls and tuning differences?

Feature Current PULSE Wireless Arctis Nova 5P
Claimed wireless runtime Up to 30 hours, Sony product-page claim Up to 60 hours, SteelSeries launch claim
Quick charge claim Not stated in the supplied Sony specifications Six hours from a 15-minute charge, SteelSeries 2024 launch claim
Game presets Sony lists presets, but no count is established here More than 100 presets in the supported mobile Companion App
PS5 game/chat balance Supported by Sony’s listed controls PlayStation ChatMix is not supported
Wireless source behavior PlayStation Link and Bluetooth can play concurrently Quick Switch selects 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth; one active at a time
Microphone Built-in microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection Retractable ClearCast 2.X microphone
Listed weight Not stated in the supplied current-model evidence 265 g

The 60-versus-30-hour contrast is useful for planning charging, but it is not matched testing. Battery life can change with volume, microphone use, wireless mode, lighting and other firmware or power settings. Keep the “up to” qualification whenever quoting either figure.

Preset counts also describe different workflows. Nova 5P’s 100-plus profiles are selected through a phone app; they do not mean the PS5 runs the app or that every game has a profile. PULSE Wireless offers Sony-listed presets and direct console controls, but the supplied product information does not establish an equivalent number of profiles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ChatMix is a practical difference for players who frequently rebalance teammates against game sound. Sony lists audio/chat balance on PULSE Wireless. SteelSeries’ Nova 5P guidance says PlayStation ChatMix is not supported, so do not promise the same physical or console control behavior.

How do the microphones and fit compare?

Both headsets provide a dedicated voice microphone, but the designs differ. PULSE Wireless uses a built-in microphone with Sony’s stated AI-enhanced noise rejection. Nova 5P uses a retractable ClearCast 2.X microphone and has a listed weight of 265 g.

Those descriptions do not prove which voice sounds clearer in a particular room. Microphone performance varies with placement, background noise, chat processing and the listener’s device. If voice chat is your deciding factor, confirm the return policy and check current independent reviews rather than treating a feature name as a measured ranking.

Comfort is similarly personal. The available evidence does not provide a matched current-PULSE weight, clamp-force measurement or standardized comfort assessment. Can Nova 5P use PS5 3D audio and PS5 chat?

Nova 5P can use the PS5’s Tempest 3D Audio output through its wireless dongle, and SteelSeries identifies it as compatible. PS5 chat works through the headset’s microphone, but SteelSeries does not support PlayStation ChatMix on this model.

Set the PS5 output device to the connected Nova 5P dongle, then adjust the console’s headphone volume and 3D Audio settings. Keep Windows Sonar out of this path: Sonar is PC software, not a PS5 app, and it is unnecessary for the console’s own Tempest processing.

How do I connect each headset to a PS5?

Have the headset charged, the latest PS5 system software installed, and the supplied wireless adapter or dongle available. Do not discard the adapter: it is the normal low-latency console link for both models.

Connect the current PULSE Wireless

  1. Insert the included PlayStation Link USB-C adapter into the PS5. Use a compatible USB-A connection with the supplied adapter or cable if your console setup requires it.
  2. Power on the PULSE Wireless and wait for the Link connection to complete.
  3. On PS5, open Settings → Sound → Audio Output and select the connected headset as the input and output device if it is not selected automatically.
  4. Set Output to Headphones, headphone volume and microphone level. Use the headset’s audio/chat balance control during a party.
  5. For phone audio, enable Bluetooth pairing on the headset and complete pairing in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Link and Bluetooth can remain active together.
  6. Open Settings → Sound → 3D Audio (Headphones) to enable or personalize PS5 3D Audio.

Connect Nova 5P

  1. Attach the supplied Nova 5P wireless dongle to the PS5, using its adapter cable if needed for a clear USB connection.
  2. Turn on the headset and select the 2.4 GHz wireless mode.
  3. Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output and choose the Nova 5P dongle as the output and input device.
  4. Set headphone volume and microphone level, then configure 3D Audio (Headphones) in the PS5 sound menu if desired.
  5. Pair a phone in Bluetooth mode when you need mobile audio. Use Quick Switch to move between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz; only one source is active at a time.
  6. For game-specific equalization, select a profile in the supported mobile Companion App. The phone app does not replace the PS5’s own Tempest 3D Audio controls.

What does the “PULSE Elite” or “PULSE 3D” name change?

If a listing or search result says Elite or PULSE 3D, stop before comparing prices or battery claims. They are different Sony products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model How it differs Battery evidence Price evidence
PULSE Elite Planar magnetic drivers, retractable microphone, included charging hanger, PlayStation Link and concurrent Link/Bluetooth audio Up to 30 hours, Sony documentation $149 U.S. catalog listing
PULSE 3D Older generation with included wireless adapter and a 3.5 mm connection Estimated up to 12 hours, Sony 2020 FAQ Current price not established here
PULSE Wireless (current) Current $99-class model with built-in microphone, Link/Bluetooth and PS5 balance controls Up to 30 hours, Sony product page $99 U.S. catalog listing

Sony says the PULSE Elite includes a PlayStation Link USB adapter for PS5, PC and Mac. An additional Link adapter can make switching an Elite between PS5 and a computer more convenient, but the Elite already includes its first adapter; it is not a required purchase for the current PULSE Wireless comparison.

The older PULSE 3D’s estimated 12-hour figure belongs only to that 2020 model. It must not be used to characterize either the current PULSE Wireless or PULSE Elite.

What price should you use when deciding?

Use live checkout prices for the final decision. Sony’s U.S. catalog showed the current PULSE Wireless at $99 when checked. SteelSeries announced a $129.99 North American launch MSRP for the Nova 5 series in 2024, but that figure is not a verified October 2026 checkout price. Taxes, sales, bundles and regional availability can change the amount you actually pay.

Because the Nova 5P current price is not established here, it is unsafe to declare a present-day savings winner or calculate a fixed dollar difference. Compare the exact model name, included adapter, warranty and return terms on the retailer’s live page.

What should you check before buying?

  • Model label: Confirm “PULSE Wireless,” “PULSE Elite” or “PULSE 3D,” and confirm “Nova 5P,” not Nova 5X, when buying for PS5.
  • Adapter in the box: Verify that the PlayStation Link adapter or Nova wireless dongle is included. It is the normal console connection.
  • Concurrent audio need: Choose PULSE Wireless if hearing phone and PS5 audio together is essential. Nova 5P Quick Switch changes sources rather than mixing them.
  • Chat balance: PULSE Wireless lists PS5 audio/chat balance; Nova 5P does not support PlayStation ChatMix.
  • Preset workflow: Nova 5P’s 100-plus profiles require the supported mobile app. If you do not want a phone-based setup, Sony’s console-oriented controls may be simpler.
  • Battery expectations: Treat 60 and 30 hours as “up to” manufacturer claims, not guaranteed runtimes.
  • Return and fit policy: No supplied evidence establishes a universal comfort or microphone winner, so a flexible return policy matters when those are decisive.
  • Price date: Recheck the live U.S. price and stock on the day you order; the Nova 5P launch MSRP is historical.

How we picked the comparison criteria

The criteria follow the differences documented for these exact models: PS5 wireless path, concurrent versus switched Bluetooth behavior, claimed battery life, app presets, console chat controls, microphone design, listed weight, 3D Audio compatibility and dated price evidence. Sound quality, microphone quality and comfort are not ranked because no independent same-conditions comparison was established.

Final verdict: which should you buy?

Buy the PlayStation PULSE Wireless Headset when you want the cleanest Sony ecosystem: a supplied PlayStation Link adapter, simultaneous Link-and-Bluetooth playback, PS5 audio/chat balance and a $99 U.S. catalog listing at the time checked. Buy the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5P Wireless when a claimed 60-hour battery, 100-plus mobile presets and a retractable microphone matter more than concurrent phone audio or PlayStation ChatMix.

Both can use PS5 3D Audio, and neither published specification proves superior sound or comfort. Confirm the exact generation and today’s checkout price before ordering.

FAQ

Can I listen to a phone call and PS5 game audio at the same time on Nova 5P?

No. Nova 5P’s Quick Switch selects 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth, and SteelSeries states that only one connection can be active at a time. The current PULSE Wireless is the model in this comparison that explicitly supports concurrent Link and Bluetooth playback.

Does buying PULSE Elite give me better PS5 3D Audio than PULSE Wireless?

Both are designed to work with PS5 3D Audio, so the console’s Tempest processing is available with either. Elite adds planar drivers and other hardware features, but the available specifications do not establish a measured positional-audio advantage.
