The connection steps depend on which PlayStation Pulse headset you own. The original PULSE 3D uses its included wireless USB adapter with a PS5, PS4, Windows PC, or Mac, but connects to a phone through a four-conductor 3.5 mm cable. The newer PULSE Elite uses PlayStation Link with a PS5 or computer and Bluetooth with compatible phones and tablets. They are not interchangeable procedures: PULSE 3D does not use the PULSE Elite Bluetooth pairing sequence, and a second PlayStation Link adapter is not required for a normal Elite setup.

Which PlayStation Pulse headset do you have?

Identify the model before plugging anything in. PULSE 3D is the original two-tone PS5-era headset and came with a dedicated wireless adapter. PULSE Elite is the separate PlayStation Link model, has a PS Link button, and supports both PlayStation Link and Bluetooth.

Model PS5 connection PC or Mac connection Phone connection Important limitation
PULSE 3D Included wireless USB adapter Included wireless USB adapter in a USB Type-A port Included four-conductor 3.5 mm cable Mobile use is wired; mobile 3D audio and several headset controls are unavailable
PULSE Elite Included PlayStation Link USB adapter Included PlayStation Link USB adapter Bluetooth pairing Bluetooth pairing requires an approximately eight-second PS Link-button hold

If your headset has no PS Link button and is the older two-tone design, follow the PULSE 3D instructions. If it is labeled PULSE Elite and includes a PlayStation Link adapter, use the Elite instructions.

Check these items first

  • Charge the headset before troubleshooting. A low battery can look like a pairing failure.
  • Locate the adapter that came with your model. PULSE 3D’s wireless adapter and PULSE Elite’s PlayStation Link adapter are different accessories.
  • Make sure the console or computer has an available, powered USB Type-A port.
  • For a phone, decide whether you have PULSE 3D (cable) or PULSE Elite (Bluetooth) before opening connection settings.

Sony lists battery life of up to 12 hours for PULSE 3D and up to 30 hours for PULSE Elite. Actual runtime varies with use, volume, and other conditions, so charge before a long session rather than waiting for the headset to shut down.

How do I connect PULSE 3D to a PS5?

Use the wireless adapter supplied with PULSE 3D. The headset does not pair directly with the PS5 over Bluetooth.

  1. Charge the headset if its battery is low.
  2. Insert the included wireless adapter into a USB port on the PS5.
  3. Slide the headset power switch to turn it on.
  4. Wait while the adapter indicator blinks during discovery and the headset indicator blinks blue. A solid connection indicator means pairing has completed.
  5. Start a game or audio app and adjust the PS5 output settings if necessary.

After connection, open the PS5 sound settings if you need to choose the output device, adjust the microphone level, or check that game and chat audio are routed to the headset. The exact menu wording can vary with PS5 system software, but the adapter must remain connected for wireless audio.

Keep the PS5 system software current. PULSE 3D supports PS5 3D audio when the game itself supports 3D audio; that feature is separate from the basic wireless connection. A game without 3D-audio support will not gain that feature merely because the headset is connected.

What if the PULSE 3D adapter does not connect?

Turn the headset off, then on again. If it still fails, verify that the included adapter is firmly seated, try another PS5 USB port, and follow the reset procedure in the official PULSE 3D manual. Do not substitute the PULSE Elite Bluetooth procedure: it is for a different headset. Also check that another nearby device has not taken the USB adapter and that the headset has enough charge to complete discovery.

How do I connect PULSE 3D to a Windows PC or Mac?

PULSE 3D connects to compatible Windows and macOS computers through its included wireless adapter. This is a USB setup, not a Bluetooth pairing process.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. Insert the PULSE 3D wireless adapter into a USB Type-A port.
  3. Turn on the headset.
  4. Wait for the adapter and headset to complete their wireless connection.
  5. Open the operating system’s sound controls and select PULSE 3D for playback and microphone input if it was not selected automatically.

If you can hear audio but applications do not receive your voice, set PULSE 3D as the input device separately from the output device. Voice-chat apps can retain a previous microphone choice even after the operating system recognizes the headset, so check the app’s own audio settings as well.

The headset’s CHAT/GAME balance control is documented as available only when PULSE 3D is connected to a PS5 or PS4. Its absence on a computer is therefore expected, not evidence of a failed pairing. Use the computer’s audio mixer or the game’s own chat controls instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PULSE 3D’s adapter is intended for compatible Windows and macOS computers. If a computer only offers a different USB connector, use a suitable physical USB solution that preserves a data connection; the official setup instructions specifically describe a USB Type-A port and do not designate a particular third-party adapter.

Can I connect PULSE 3D to a phone?

Yes, but PULSE 3D phone use is wired. Connect the included four-conductor 3.5 mm audio cable to the headset and the phone’s compatible 3.5 mm jack. PULSE 3D does not use Bluetooth for this mobile connection.

  1. Insert the four-conductor cable fully into the headset.
  2. Connect the other end to the phone’s 3.5 mm audio jack.
  3. Choose the wired headset as the audio route if the phone asks.
  4. Test both playback and microphone input in a call or recording app before relying on it for a meeting.

If the phone has no 3.5 mm jack, you need a compatible phone adapter, but the official documentation does not identify one specific adapter model. A four-conductor cable is required for microphone use; a stereo-only cable may deliver sound without carrying the headset microphone. Do not assume every USB-C or Lightning audio dongle supports a headset microphone; verify compatibility with the phone.

With the cable attached, PULSE 3D operates as a passive headset. Wireless functions and several controls are disabled, including CHAT/GAME balance, microphone mute, mic monitoring, and volume controls. You control listening volume and mute behavior from the phone or app instead. PlayStation also states that 3D audio is not supported on mobile devices, so a phone connection should not be advertised as mobile Tempest 3D audio.

How do I connect PULSE Elite to a PS5?

PULSE Elite uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter for the PS5. The adapter is paired with the headset out of the box, so normal setup does not require purchasing another adapter.

  1. Turn on the PS5.
  2. Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a USB Type-A port on the console.
  3. Press the PlayStation Link button on the headset.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the headset and adapter indicators to show a completed connection.

If Elite was recently connected to another nearby PlayStation Link device, it may search for that device first. The official support instructions say the search lasts 30 seconds; if no connection is found, the headset turns off. Press the PS Link button again after correcting the adapter or console connection. Keep the other Link device or its adapter powered off temporarily if the headset keeps choosing it.

Once connected, the PS5 can route game and chat audio through Elite. If sound remains on the television, open the console’s sound-output settings and select the Link headset, then check the microphone input separately.

How do I connect PULSE Elite to a PC or Mac?

Use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter in the computer, then start the headset’s Link connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Insert the PlayStation Link adapter into a USB Type-A port.
  3. Press the headset’s PS Link button.
  4. Wait for the headset and adapter indicators to confirm the connection.
  5. Set PULSE Elite as the computer’s playback and microphone device if it is not selected automatically.

On Windows, Sony provides a PlayStation Link PC Driver. It allows device updates, audio settings, and related management without connecting the headset to a console. Install or open that driver when you need PC-side firmware or settings management. The driver does not replace the physical PlayStation Link adapter; both the adapter and the headset still need to be connected for wireless audio.

How do I pair PULSE Elite with a phone over Bluetooth?

PULSE Elite can connect directly to a compatible Bluetooth phone or tablet. Pairing mode is entered with an approximately eight-second hold of the headset’s PS Link button.

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  2. Press the headset’s PS Link button to turn it on.
  3. Press and hold the PS Link button. Release it when the indicator quickly blinks blue, which occurs after approximately eight seconds.
  4. Select PULSE Elite in the phone’s list of available Bluetooth devices.
  5. A solid blue indicator confirms the Bluetooth connection.

If PULSE Elite does not appear, keep holding only until the quick blue blink, then release; repeatedly switching the headset off and on without entering pairing mode will not make it discoverable. Remove an old PULSE Elite entry from the phone’s Bluetooth list only if the phone is stuck on a failed previous record, then repeat the pairing sequence.

PlayStation Support describes this capability as: “Connect your PULSE Elite wireless headset to compatible mobile devices that support a Bluetooth connection.” Elite can also carry audio simultaneously from a PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device, allowing a phone call or music stream while you remain connected to a PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal. The two-device feature is specific to Elite’s Link-and-Bluetooth design; it does not turn PULSE 3D’s wired phone connection into a wireless one.

Do I need a second PlayStation Link USB adapter?

No. The adapter included with PULSE Elite is sufficient for its primary PS5 or computer connection. A second PlayStation Link USB adapter is an optional accessory for an additional PS5, PC, or Mac connection, or as a replacement if the original adapter is lost or damaged. It can save you from moving one adapter between locations, but it is not a prerequisite for first-time setup.

That accessory does not replace the original PULSE 3D wireless adapter. PULSE 3D and PULSE Elite use different wireless systems, so use the adapter supplied for your model. Buying a Link adapter for PULSE 3D will not create a Bluetooth or Link connection for that headset.

Why is my PS5 Pulse headset not connecting?

Start by separating model-specific faults from general USB or power problems. The correct recovery sequence differs between PULSE 3D and PULSE Elite.

PULSE 3D troubleshooting

  • Confirm that the adapter is the one supplied with PULSE 3D and is inserted directly into a powered PS5 USB port.
  • Power-cycle the headset by switching it off and back on.
  • Try another USB port on the PS5.
  • Charge the headset before repeating the connection attempt.
  • Move away from unnecessary wireless interference while testing and keep the headset close to the console.
  • Use the reset procedure in the official PULSE 3D manual if the adapter and headset still do not pair.

For a computer, also confirm that the operating system is using the headset for both playback and microphone input. The CHAT/GAME balance control not working on a PC is normal because that control is documented for PS5 and PS4 connections.

PULSE Elite troubleshooting

  • Check that the PlayStation Link adapter is inserted into a powered USB port and that the headset is within normal wireless range.
  • Press the PS Link button once and allow the 30-second search to finish.
  • If the headset was connected to another nearby Link device, turn that device or its adapter off temporarily and try again.
  • On Windows, use the PlayStation Link PC Driver for updates and audio management.
  • For phone pairing, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that you held the PS Link button for approximately eight seconds until the indicator quickly blinked blue.

How do I reset PULSE Elite without deleting pairings?

Hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds. This turns it off and resets it without deleting stored PlayStation Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings. After the reset, press the button normally to reconnect to the saved device.

How do I erase PULSE Elite pairings and audio settings?

Use the pairing wipe only when a normal reset does not solve the problem. Hold the PS Link button until the indicator quickly blinks blue at approximately eight seconds, then repeat the approximately eight-second hold. A successful wipe briefly blinks red and deletes the stored pairings and audio settings, so you will need to pair the headset again with the adapter and any phone.

How do I reset a PlayStation Link USB adapter?

Insert the adapter into a powered USB port, then hold its PS Link button for 30 seconds. Sony recommends using a timer because the full duration matters. Afterward, reconnect the adapter and repeat the Elite setup steps. A short press or a hold that ends early is not the documented adapter reset.

What works on a phone, and what does not?

Capability PULSE 3D on phone PULSE Elite on phone
Connection method Four-conductor 3.5 mm cable Bluetooth
Wireless phone audio No Yes, with a compatible Bluetooth device
Microphone Requires a four-conductor cable and compatible phone jack or adapter Uses the Bluetooth connection
Mobile 3D audio Not supported Not identified as a mobile feature in the setup documentation
Headset controls Several controls are disabled in passive wired mode Bluetooth operation supports direct mobile connection; simultaneous Link and Bluetooth audio is supported

For PULSE 3D, the cable is not merely an alternative pairing method: it changes the headset into passive wired operation. For Elite, Bluetooth is the intended direct-phone method. This difference is why a phone search for “PULSE 3D” will not produce the same result as a search for “PULSE Elite.”

Which connection method should you use?

Use the shortest path that matches the model and device:

  • PULSE 3D with PS5, PS4, Windows, or Mac: use the included wireless adapter.
  • PULSE 3D with a phone: use the included four-conductor 3.5 mm cable; add only a compatible phone adapter if the phone lacks a jack.
  • PULSE Elite with PS5, Windows, Mac, or PlayStation Portal: use PlayStation Link through the included adapter.
  • PULSE Elite with a phone or tablet: use Bluetooth and the approximately eight-second PS Link-button pairing sequence.

The practical distinction is hardware, not a hidden menu setting: PULSE 3D’s mobile path is analog cable, while PULSE Elite’s mobile path is Bluetooth. If you keep the model-specific adapter and cable requirements in mind, most failed setups reduce to a power cycle, a USB-port change, or the correct reset sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PULSE 3D connect to a phone wirelessly?

No. The documented phone method is the included four-conductor 3.5 mm cable. A phone without a headphone jack needs a compatible adapter, and a stereo-only cable may not carry the microphone signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does PULSE Elite turn off while I am trying to connect it?

Elite searches for a PlayStation Link device for about 30 seconds. If it finds none, it turns itself off; check the adapter, then press the PS Link button and start again.

Will resetting PULSE Elite remove my Bluetooth devices?

A 10-second PS Link-button hold resets and powers off the headset without deleting pairings. The separate pairing-wipe sequence deletes PlayStation Link and Bluetooth pairings plus audio settings.

Can I use one PlayStation Link adapter with PULSE 3D?

No. PULSE 3D requires its own included wireless adapter. PlayStation Link adapters are for PULSE Elite and other compatible Link devices.

Why is my PULSE 3D microphone not working on my phone?

Use the included four-conductor cable and a compatible phone jack or adapter. A stereo-only cable can carry sound but may not provide the microphone connection; mobile controls such as mute and mic monitoring are also disabled in passive wired mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PULSE 3D support 3D audio on a phone?

No. PlayStation states that 3D audio is not supported on mobile devices. PULSE 3D’s supported 3D-audio use is with compatible PS5 games.

Can PULSE Elite play phone audio while it is connected to a PS5?

Yes. PULSE Elite supports simultaneous audio from a PlayStation Link device and a Bluetooth device, so a compatible phone call or music stream can be used while Link audio remains active.

Is the CHAT/GAME control supposed to work on my PULSE 3D computer connection?

The documented CHAT/GAME balance feature is available when PULSE 3D is connected to a PS5 or PS4. Its absence on Windows or macOS is expected; use the computer or game’s audio controls.

What should I buy if my PULSE 3D phone cable is missing?

Use a compatible four-conductor 3.5 mm audio cable so the microphone can function. If the phone lacks a 3.5 mm jack, you may also need a compatible phone adapter; Sony’s setup documentation does not specify one particular adapter model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Match the connection to the headset: PULSE 3D uses its included wireless adapter on PS5 and computers and a four-conductor 3.5 mm cable on phones; PULSE Elite uses PlayStation Link on PS5 and computers and Bluetooth on phones. Use the model’s own adapter, and reserve resets or a second Link adapter for the specific problem they address.
