PlayStation Portal is the better fit if you own a PS5 and want a dedicated handheld screen with built-in controls. Remote Play on a phone or tablet is more flexible if you already have a compatible device, want touch or controller input, or need to connect to a PS4. Both options stream games from your console, so the experience depends on your network rather than turning either device into a standalone console.
Portal or phone: the main differences
| What matters | PlayStation Portal | Phone or tablet with PS Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Console support | PS5 only; it does not work with PS4. | PS5 or PS4 through the Remote Play app. |
| Device | Dedicated remote-play device with an 8-inch HD screen and integrated controls. | A compatible Android phone or tablet, iPhone, or iPad you already own, plus the free app. |
| Controls | Built-in controls. | On-screen touch controls or a compatible controller; support and features vary by device and operating system. |
| Connection | Wi-Fi and an internet-connected PS5. | Wi-Fi or mobile data, subject to your device, carrier and data plan. |
| Best suited to | PS5 owners who want a dedicated screen and controls without using the TV. | Players who want to use a device they already have, choose between touch and controller input, or play from a PS4. |
Sony says Remote Play requires at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Those are connection guidelines, not a promise of a particular picture quality or response time: the network environment matters. See Sony’s PS Remote Play overview and Portal product FAQ.

Choose based on your console and how you want to play
Choose Portal if you have a PS5 and want dedicated hardware
Portal combines an 8-inch HD screen with integrated controls, so you do not need to mount a phone or pair a separate controller. It can let you play while someone else uses the TV connected to your PS5. It still streams from that PS5; it is not a standalone console. Portal requires Wi-Fi, and Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the device.
Choose a phone or tablet if flexibility matters more
The free PS Remote Play app can connect to a PS5 or PS4. On a compatible mobile device, you can use touch controls or a supported controller. That makes the app the relevant option if you own only a PS4, or if you prefer to use a screen you already have. Controller compatibility and available features depend on the specific device and operating system; do not assume a controller’s full feature set will work in Remote Play.

What you need before setting up Remote Play
- A PS5 or PS4 console and a compatible game. Some games that require VR equipment or additional peripherals are not compatible.
- A compatible connected device: Portal for PS5 Remote Play, or a supported phone or tablet running the Remote Play app.
- A PlayStation account, with the same account used on the console and the device.

- Install and sign in. Get the PS Remote Play app on your compatible mobile device, then sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Connect to the console. Open the app and select your PS5 or PS4 when it appears. Follow the app’s prompts if it asks you to link the console.
- Enable mobile data if needed. In the app settings, turn on “Use Mobile Data” to allow a mobile connection. Carrier rules and network conditions may still prevent it from working, and use may count against your data allowance.

Compatibility and practical limits
- Portal needs a PS5. Sony states that PS Portal is not compatible with PlayStation 4 consoles. See its Portal compatibility page.
- Some games and accessories are excluded. Games that require VR equipment or additional peripherals may not work through Remote Play.
- Mobile controller features vary. DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 support depends on the mobile device and operating system; some controller features may be unavailable during Remote Play.
- Portal audio options are specified by Sony. It supports 3.5 mm wired audio and PlayStation Link wireless audio devices.
- Neither option removes network dependence. Sony’s speed figures are guidance; actual quality and connectivity vary with the network environment.
Bottom line: which option is better for you?
Pick Portal if you have a PS5, value integrated controls and a dedicated screen, and can use reliable Wi-Fi. Pick phone or tablet Remote Play if you want to use hardware you already own, need PS4 support, want touch controls, or may rely on mobile data. If your connection is unstable, neither choice can guarantee smooth play; the better purchase decision is the one that fits your console, device, control preference and network.
