PlayStation Portal is a screen and controller that streams games; it is not a standalone console. Its original Remote Play feature streams compatible games from a paired PS5. Since cloud streaming officially arrived in November 2025, eligible users can also stream selected PS5 games without relying on their own PS5 being available. The two modes have different requirements, so the key question is whether you want access to your console’s games or Sony’s eligible cloud library.
What is PlayStation Portal?
Portal is Sony’s dedicated remote-play device, first launched in November 2023. It combines an 8-inch LCD with a 1080p display and controls modeled for PlayStation play. Sony specifies support for up to 60 frames per second. Games are streamed to Portal rather than run locally on the device.

How the two ways to play differ
| Question | Remote Play | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On your paired PS5; the compatible game must be installed there. | On Sony’s streaming service for an eligible PS5 title. |
| Do you need a PS5? | Yes. It must be connected to broadband and powered on or in Rest Mode. | Not for an eligible cloud-streamed game. |
| Is PlayStation Plus required? | No, not for Remote Play itself. A game’s online multiplayer may have a separate subscription requirement. | Yes. Cloud streaming on Portal requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership. |
| What games can you play? | Compatible games installed on the paired console. Games requiring a VR headset or extra peripherals may not work. | Selected PS5 games from eligible catalogs and selected digital PS5 games in your library. Availability varies by country and over time; PS4 and PS3 games are not supported in this Portal cloud-streaming mode. |
Remote Play: stream from your own PS5
Remote Play connects Portal to a PS5 associated with your PlayStation account. Sony requires a PS5 and PlayStation account for this mode. The console needs a broadband connection and must be on or in Rest Mode so Portal can connect to it. Remote Play does not require PS Plus by itself.

Cloud streaming: play eligible games without your PS5
Sony officially launched cloud streaming on Portal on November 5, 2025, after a beta period. It supports selected PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game and Classics Catalogs, along with selected digital PS5 games in your library. The PS5 does not have to be powered on or available to another user for an eligible cloud-streamed game. Sony’s launch announcement describes the added library streaming support; check the current cloud-streaming support page for present eligibility and restrictions.
What internet speed does Portal need?
Sony’s US product FAQ lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Portal use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. For cloud streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, at least 7 Mbps for 720p, and at least 13 Mbps for 1080p. These are published connection thresholds, not guarantees of low lag or a particular picture quality: performance depends on the game and network environment.
Cloud-streaming resolution adjusts automatically to connection quality. Sony currently lists 720p and 1080p as the available maximum resolution choices. A March 2026 update added a 1080p High Quality mode at a higher bitrate than default 1080p Standard, for both Remote Play and cloud streaming.

Playing away from home
You can use Remote Play away from home if your PS5 is reachable over the internet and both ends have a suitable connection. Cloud streaming can avoid dependence on your own PS5, but still needs internet access, Premium, an eligible game, and a supported country. Public Wi-Fi may work, but Sony cautions that its quality can be outside your control. Complete initial setup on home Wi-Fi before using public networks that require additional validation; some such networks need a phone or tablet during connection.
Cloud streaming eligibility and limitations
Portal cloud streaming requires an adult PlayStation account, an active Premium membership, and a supported country. Sony’s current US support page lists Canada, the United States, Japan, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Sony excludes overseas territories. Country eligibility and game availability can change, so check the support page before relying on access.
Cloud streaming does not provide every PS5 game you own, nor PS4 or PS3 game streaming through this Portal feature. Some system-level functions are unavailable while cloud streaming, including system party invitations, voice chat and messaging, friend management, trophy-earning previews, broadcasting, Share Screen and Share Play, Game Help, and challenges. Sony says game-provided chat or messaging may still work; the PlayStation App can handle some social features.

What changed after Portal launched?
Portal debuted in November 2023 with Remote Play as its core use. The notable change is cloud streaming’s official arrival in November 2025, which added an option for eligible games that does not depend on the owner’s PS5 being available. In March 2026, Sony announced the 1080p High Quality mode and refinements to search, game-bundle selection, game-invite visibility, trophy notifications, and QR-code onboarding.
Sony reported that Portal cloud-streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January, comparing December 2025 with January 2026. Sony also said more than 50% of Portal users were Premium subscribers, using that same stated data window. These are company-reported figures, not independent measurements of the broader handheld-gaming market. For current system software details, consult Sony’s PS Portal system software update history.

- Consider it if you want a dedicated handheld screen and controls for playing compatible games streamed from your PS5 around the home or elsewhere with a reliable connection.
- Cloud streaming may matter if you have Premium and want to play eligible PS5 titles when your console is unavailable or you do not have access to one.
- Look elsewhere if you expect a portable console that runs games independently, want unrestricted access to your full game library, or cannot count on suitable Wi-Fi.
The US product page currently advertises Portal availability from $249. Price and availability are market-sensitive; check Sony’s product page for current US details.
