Its standard Remote Play mode streams compatible games from your PS5; a separate cloud-streaming mode can stream select PS5 games without using your console, but requires PlayStation Plus Premium and is limited by game, account, and region eligibility.
What can PlayStation Portal play?
Portal connects to a PS5 for Remote Play; it does not connect to a PS4. In Remote Play, the game runs on the paired PS5 and its picture and sound stream to Portal. The game must be compatible and available on that console. Sony also says PS5 media apps are not supported through Remote Play. See Sony’s Portal compatibility and Remote Play guidance.

There is a second option: cloud streaming for select PS5 games. That streams a supported title from Sony’s service directly to Portal, rather than from your console. It is a separate feature with its own subscription and eligibility requirements.
Remote Play and cloud streaming: what is the difference?
| Question | Remote Play | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game come from? | A compatible game available on your paired PS5 | A select eligible PS5 game streamed from Sony’s service |
| Does the PS5 need to be available? | Yes. It must be on or configured to wake from rest mode. | No, for eligible titles. |
| Is PlayStation Plus Premium required? | No general Portal-specific Premium requirement is stated for Remote Play. A game’s online multiplayer may have its own membership requirement. | Yes, an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required. |
| Which games are available? | Compatible games available on the console; some VR games and titles requiring certain peripherals are exceptions. | Select titles only; availability varies by region and over time. |
| What internet guidance applies? | Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. | Sony publishes separate thresholds by streaming resolution; see the cloud-streaming section below. |
Sony’s cloud-streaming service page lists supported regions and a live game finder. Check it for current availability rather than relying on a fixed title list.

Can I use PlayStation Portal without a PS5?
For Remote Play, no: a PS5 supplies the game. You can use Portal without your PS5 being active only for eligible cloud-streamed PS5 games, with an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership, broadband Wi-Fi, and an eligible account and region. Cloud streaming is not available to child accounts, and not every PS5 game is included. Sony’s cloud-streaming eligibility information has the current regional and catalog details.
Can I play on Portal offline?
No. Portal streams games and requires Wi-Fi with an internet connection. Remote Play also requires the PS5 to be online and signed in to the same PlayStation account as Portal. Cloud streaming removes the need for an available PS5 for eligible games, but it still requires an internet connection.

How do I set up Remote Play?
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, install the latest available system software, and sign in with the PlayStation account you will use on Portal.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. Follow Sony’s Remote Play setup instructions if menu labels differ on your system software.
- To wake the PS5 from rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
- Connect Portal to Wi-Fi and sign in with the same PlayStation account. Keep the PS5 on, or put it into rest mode with the wake settings enabled.
What internet speed does Portal need?
For Remote Play, Sony lists broadband Wi-Fi at 5 Mbps minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are Sony’s service guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: connection stability and network conditions also affect performance. Sony recommends connecting the PS5 to the network with Ethernet when possible. If both devices use Wi-Fi, Sony recommends the same network and a 5 GHz connection for Portal; band steering may be worth disabling if it disrupts the connection. See Sony’s Remote Play network guidance.
Cloud streaming has distinct speed guidance on Sony’s US service page. The following are Sony’s listed minimum thresholds to establish or stream a session, followed by its higher-resolution recommendations:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does PlayStation Portal work on hotel or public Wi-Fi?
Home Wi-Fi is not required. Portal can use public broadband Wi-Fi, but sign-in procedures and network quality vary. Sony says certain public networks that require additional validation are supported with Portal system software 3.0.1 or later. You need a phone or tablet to complete those validation steps, and Portal’s initial setup must first have been completed on home Wi-Fi. Sony’s Portal FAQ and system software update history describe the supported public-network sign-in process.

Update Portal and test the hotel or other public network before depending on it for a trip. A network may require a room number, ID, password, or other sign-in steps; even after access is granted, crowded or restricted Wi-Fi can make streaming unreliable. Sony notes that public-network quality may be outside your control.
What audio devices work with Portal?
You can connect compatible wired headphones or earbuds through the 3.5 mm audio jack. Portal also supports PlayStation Link wireless audio products, including PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. These are optional; they are not required to stream games. Sony’s Portal compatibility page lists supported audio options.

Quick troubleshooting checks
- Portal cannot find the console: Confirm the PS5 is online, signed in to the same account, and has Remote Play enabled. If waking it from rest mode, check both network and wake settings.
- The stream stutters or looks poor: Check connection stability, not just the advertised speed. When possible, connect the PS5 by Ethernet; for Wi-Fi, Sony recommends the same network and 5 GHz for Portal.
- Hotel sign-in does not appear to work: Check that Portal is on system software 3.0.1 or later, that initial setup was completed on home Wi-Fi, and that you have a phone or tablet available for validation.
- A game is missing from cloud streaming: Confirm that it is currently eligible in your region and that the account meets Sony’s requirements. The catalog changes, so check Sony’s live game finder and service terms.
