PlayStation Plus access depends on how you obtained the game. A monthly game you added to your library stays playable while your Plus membership is active. An Extra or Premium Game Catalog download, or a Premium Classics Catalog title, remains playable only while you have the required tier and the game is still listed in that catalog. Downloading a catalog game does not turn it into a permanent claim.
Three dates must be kept separate: the monthly offer window for adding a game, your membership’s paid-through date, and a catalog title’s removal date. Your saves are separate from these licenses: downloaded games use console storage, streamed games use PlayStation’s streaming storage, and cloud-save access is a Plus benefit. The guidance below reflects US PlayStation pages checked in October 2026; availability and features can differ by region, console and tier.
What does a PlayStation Plus game license actually cover?
PlayStation Plus has several access paths, and each has a different end condition. The account that acquired or claimed the game, the active subscription tier and the title’s current availability all matter.

PlayStation’s own FAQ frames the question as “Are PlayStation Plus games mine to keep?” The practical answer is conditional: monthly additions are tied to an active membership, while catalog games are also tied to continued listing in the relevant catalog.

Which dates should I check?
Use the date that answers the particular problem instead of treating every date in the interface as a license deadline.
Monthly offer window
This is the period in which you can add that month’s games to your library. Add the game during the window; after it is in your library, PlayStation says it can be downloaded and played whenever your membership is active. Current US information says PS4 games are added only intermittently from January 2026, so do not assume every monthly refresh includes a PS4 title.
Paid-through or next-payment date
Subscription Management shows when your current paid period ends and, if renewal is on, the next payment date. Canceling stops renewal but does not remove benefits immediately. Access continues through the paid period, then monthly-game access, online storage and online multiplayer end when the membership ends.

Catalog removal date
A catalog title can leave while your subscription is still active. The game’s listing or PlayStation’s current catalog announcement is the place to check availability. A license display or your renewal date does not establish when a particular catalog game will be removed.

What happens when I cancel, let Plus expire, or downgrade?
Canceling and expiration are different events. A cancellation only prevents the next renewal; it does not shorten the period already paid for.
- Cancel renewal: Your current tier and benefits remain available until the paid-through date.
- Membership expires: Monthly games and catalog downloads become unavailable, and Plus online-storage access and online multiplayer end. PlayStation says purchases made with a Plus discount remain yours.
- Downgrade: The lower tier takes effect on the next payment date. Benefits exclusive to the higher tier, including access to higher-tier catalogs, end at that point.
If you later resubscribe to the required tier while a catalog game is still listed, access can return. If the title has left the catalog, resubscribing alone does not restore that catalog entitlement.
Why is my PlayStation Plus game locked?
A padlock is a diagnosis problem, not proof that you must buy the game. First establish the game’s original access route, then check the account, tier and current availability.
- Sign in to the account that bought the game or added the monthly title. For a catalog game, confirm that account has the subscription; review transaction or claim history where appropriate.
- Check that the membership is active and has the required tier. For a catalog title, verify that it is still listed. Check the next payment date separately; it is not a catalog-removal date.
- Check PlayStation service status and console-sharing settings. If the entitlement should still exist, restore licenses. On PS5, open
Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, openSettings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. - Restart the game after the license refresh. PlayStation states that restoring licenses will not affect your data, but it cannot make an expired subscription active or bring back a title that genuinely left a catalog.
- If the catalog game was removed, choose a separate access route: purchase an available edition, or use a compatible disc edition. Keep the existing save and verify that the purchased or disc edition matches the platform and edition that created it.
Where are my saves for downloaded and streamed games?
A downloaded game writes progress to PS5 or PS4 console storage. A streamed game stores progress in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. A streamed save does not automatically appear in a local installation; transfer it through Plus online storage before switching play methods.

Back up a downloaded PS5 or PS4 game
- On PS5, open
Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. - Choose
Saved Data (PS5)orSaved Data (PS4), then use the upload or download controls for online storage. - For a PS4 console, the documented manual path is
Settings > Application Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage. If automatic uploads are configured on a primary PS4, verify that the intended save finished uploading before deleting local data. - To move a streamed save to downloaded play, follow PlayStation’s save-transfer process to copy it to Plus online storage, then download it to the console.
PS5 automatic synchronization and PS4 automatic upload are not identical. A PS4 save can be uploaded automatically when configured, but it must be downloaded manually to PS5 console storage before PS5 downloaded play.
What Plus cloud storage includes
PlayStation’s current support information lists up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a 1,000-file limit for PS4 saves. These are storage limits, not extra game licenses.
When Plus ends, PlayStation establishes that online-storage access ends; the reviewed US guidance does not promise a fixed number of days during which inaccessible cloud saves will remain recoverable. Arrange a supported local or cloud backup while the membership is active. A local save should not be confused with a game entitlement: the file can remain on the console even when the Plus game is locked.

PlayStation’s PS5 storage table permits a USB drive for PS4 saved data but marks PS5 saved data as unavailable for USB-drive storage. A USB flash drive can therefore be useful for a PS4 save backup, but it is not a direct PS5-save backup.

An M.2 SSD expands space for installed games. It does not preserve a license after a catalog removal and is not a substitute for Plus cloud-save storage. If you use removable storage for PS4 saves, confirm the file is present and readable before removing the only local copy.
Does a catalog game need an internet check?
PlayStation’s May 23, 2022 service FAQ says a downloaded Extra or Premium catalog game requires a PSN connection every seven days for validation. The same published guidance says that particular check does not apply to Essential monthly downloadable games.
This is dated vendor guidance, not an independently measured guarantee that any title will work offline indefinitely. Keep the console connected often enough for the applicable entitlement check, especially after changing consoles, accounts or subscription tiers.
What happens to DLC when a Plus catalog game leaves?
PlayStation says purchased DLC and add-ons for a downloaded catalog game cannot be used with that game after membership expiration or catalog removal. The add-on purchase is not erased: use becomes available again if you resubscribe or purchase the game. PlayStation also says add-ons are not supported while streaming a title.

Because editions can store content differently, check the specific game’s platform and edition before assuming that DLC or a save will work with another release. A physical disc also requires compatible hardware and must remain inserted during play.
How should I protect progress before a game leaves?
Do not wait for the padlock to appear. While the game is still playable, make a current local save and upload it to Plus online storage. If the title is streamed, transfer its streaming save to online storage and download a copy to the console so you have a local version.
- Confirm the save belongs to the same PSN account that will use the replacement purchase or disc.
- Record the game’s platform and edition; cross-edition compatibility is not guaranteed for every title.
- For a catalog game you want to keep playing, purchase an available edition before removal if that option matters to you.
- For PS4 saves, verify the cloud upload or supported USB copy before deleting local data.
A purchase changes the access route, not the save file. Keep the original save and check compatibility rather than assuming that every version shares progress.

- If you added the title as a monthly game, check that the membership is active and that you used the acquiring account.
- If you downloaded it from Extra or Premium, check both the tier and whether the title remains in the catalog.
- If you streamed it, identify the streaming save and transfer it before relying on a download.
- If you bought it or own a compatible disc, Plus catalog dates are not the controlling license; verify the account, edition and hardware.
- If a valid entitlement is still expected, restore licenses. If the title has left the catalog, restoration cannot bypass the removal.
