To protect a PlayStation Network account and a child’s gaming access, secure the adult account first, give each child a separate child account in the family, and review Family Management for unfamiliar members. Sony’s controls can limit playtime, purchases and social features, but they do not cover every game’s own settings: Roblox communications, for example, are independent of PlayStation parental controls. If you find an unrecognized child account, treat it as a security warning and contact PlayStation Support; the family manager cannot remove child members.
How does a PlayStation family work?
A PlayStation family has one family manager, optional adult members, adults who may be appointed as parent/guardian, and child members. The family manager creates the family and controls membership. Each child should have a separate child account using the child’s real date of birth so age-based settings apply to that account. The minimum age for a child account varies by country.
Roles matter because adult members do not automatically get the family manager’s powers. A parent/guardian can manage child controls and see playtime, but cannot add or remove members, spend from the manager’s wallet, or reset a child’s password. An ordinary adult can add their own payment method and leave the family, but cannot manage child controls or the family wallet. Children cannot leave the family or add payment methods.

| Child member | Play offline subject to ratings and restrictions; ask for exceptions; upgrade to an adult account when eligible. | Add or remove members, leave the family, add wallet funds or payment methods, or change their online ID. |
A child’s upgrade to an adult account is optional, offered by a sign-in notification when the child becomes eligible, and cannot be reversed. Online play, Store purchases and contacting other players depend on the controls set for that child.

How do I set up a child account on PlayStation?
Create the child account through the family manager’s account, then verify the email and sign in to PSN on the console so the controls can take effect. Sony’s setup options are the PlayStation Family app, the web account tools, and the console Family Management menus.
- PlayStation Family app: Sign in or create an account, then choose Set Up Your Family. To add a child later, use Settings > Family Management > Add a child.
- Web: Open Account Management, select Family Management > Set Up Now or Add Family Member > Add a Child, and follow the prompts.
- PS5: Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- PS4: Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
- Enter the child’s date of birth and configure age-appropriate parental controls. Avoid creating an adult account for a child to bypass age settings.
To reduce the chance that a child creates an uncontrolled new account on a console, set a system restriction passcode using Sony’s controls for preventing parental-control changes. When a child account is linked to a third-party service or app, the parent receives a notification; family managers can review linked services under Services and Apps.
How do I set parental controls on PS5?
Use the PlayStation Family app, Account Management on the web, or PS5’s Family Management menu to set controls for an individual child. These controls are tied to the account, so a change applies across the child’s devices; if the child is already in a game when a setting changes, they need to sign out and back in for it to take effect.
On PS5, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, choose the child, and edit the relevant setting. On the web, use Account Management > Family Management, select the child, then choose Edit. The Family app provides corresponding child and family settings. Available controls vary by device and region.
What can parents restrict?
- Games and video: Set age levels for PS5, PS4 and PS3 games, Blu-ray discs and DVDs. Sony states that PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 are not for children under 12.
- Web use: Restrict web browsing where the setting is available.
- Communication and user-generated content: Restrict chat, sharing and viewing other players’ content.
- Online content filtering: Set age filtering in countries or regions where the feature is offered.
- Purchases: Set a monthly spending limit for Store purchases.
- Playtime: Set playable hours and a duration for each day, and choose what happens when time ends.
- Privacy and connected services: Manage who can change privacy settings and review linked third-party services.
- Exceptions: On PS5 and in the Family app, review requests for a blocked game or in-game communication.
PS5 restriction presets are starting points rather than immutable packages: changing any value switches the preset to Customize. The practical differences include game-rating ceilings, web access and virtual-reality restrictions.
| Preset | PS4/PS3 game ceiling | Web | Communication | VR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Child | Games rated for ages 6 or 7 and under | Restricted | Restricted | Restricted |
| Early Teens | Games rated for ages 12 or 13 and under | Restricted | Restricted | Not restricted |
| Late Teens or Older | Games rated for ages 15 and under | Not restricted | Restricted | Not restricted |
For all three presets, the PS5 game/app rating is set at or below the child’s age, and the monthly spending limit is 0. Blu-ray limits are 7 and under for Child, 13 and under for Early Teens, and 16 and under for Late Teens or Older. DVD use is not restricted in these presets. Rating labels and age guidance can vary by country; adjust the individual controls when a preset does not match your household’s needs.

What does “Restrict” do to communication?
When Communication and User-Generated Content is restricted, the child cannot voice-chat or send text messages to other players, although pre-written in-game messages remain allowed. The setting also blocks sharing the child’s own screenshots, video clips or broadcasts, viewing another player’s user-generated content or profile description, and linking selected third-party services or apps that provide communication or user-generated content.
Some blocked games show a request screen. The child can ask for a game exception; the family manager and appointed parent/guardians receive a notification and email and can decide in Allowed Games > Gameplay. Communication exceptions are handled under Allowed Games > Communication. A parent/guardian may be able to change a control, but should tell the family manager when changing a spending limit the manager set.
What is the PlayStation Family app?
The free PlayStation Family app gives family managers and appointed guardians a phone-based way to manage a child’s PlayStation experience. Sony launched it on 10 September 2025. It is available through the App Store and Google Play in most markets and requires iOS 14 or later or Android 8 or later. An account is not required just to open the app, though setting up a family requires a PlayStation account.
The app supports guided child-account setup, activity reports, per-day playtime limits, real-time notifications about the game a child is playing, and approvals or refusals for extra time, restricted games and communication requests. It also lets authorized adults view balances, add funds, set Store spending limits and manage age presets, privacy and social settings. Some features require PS4 or PS5.
Playtime settings are available in the app and on console. Choose whether to restrict playtime, whether the console should only notify the child or log them out when time ends, and the duration and playable hours for each day or selected days. Set the time zone first; Sony requires it before playtime can be configured. The same playtime restriction applies if a child uses both PS4 and PS5.

Near the end of the allowed time, the child receives on-screen notifications. On PS5 or in the Family app, an adult can use Change Playtime for Today. A child can select Ask for More Playtime from reminders, and an adult can approve a change or decline it.

How do I stop my child from buying games on PlayStation Store?
Child accounts do not have their own PlayStation wallet. A child’s Store purchases draw from the family manager’s wallet, but the manager sets the child’s monthly spending limit; Sony documents the default as 0 when the manager creates the child account.
Check the limit under the child’s Family Management settings and leave it at 0 if purchases should not be allowed. If you permit spending, choose a limit that reflects your household’s rules. The limit is monthly, and an appointed parent/guardian who changes it should keep the family manager informed.
For additional protection on an adult account, enable Require Password at Checkout for Store purchases if the account uses passwords. Sony says this feature is incompatible with accounts set up with passkeys, so it is not a second lock available alongside passkey sign-in.

Secure the adult account that manages the family, and secure the email account used as its PSN sign-in ID. A strong unique email password matters because email is a recovery route for the PSN account. Use a different password for every service; Sony recommends a password manager for generating and storing them.
Passkey or 2-step verification?
Sony positions passkeys as its preferred replacement for passwords. A passkey uses a device’s biometrics or screen-lock PIN and may sync through the operating system’s cloud service. If passkeys are unavailable or unsuitable, enable 2-step verification (2SV), preferably with an authenticator app rather than SMS. Sony lists Authy, Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples of authenticator apps, and also supports text-message codes.
| Sign-in protection | What it does | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Uses a device’s biometric check or screen-lock PIN in place of a password; Sony supports sign-in on PS5, PS4, PlayStation website, PlayStation App and Remote Play for Mac. | Manage and remove passkeys in Security settings. Some hardware security keys may have issues. Require Password at Checkout cannot be used with passkeys. |
| 2SV authenticator app | Adds an app-generated code to specified sign-in and account-change events. | Record the backup codes at setup; keep access to the authenticator device. |
| 2SV SMS | Sends a verification code by text message. | Available as an alternative, though Sony’s documented stronger 2SV choice is an authenticator app. |
How do I set up a passkey on PSN?
- On the web: Sign in to Account Management, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, then select Create a Passkey.
- On PS5: Go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey and scan the displayed QR code with a mobile device.
- Complete the device’s passkey setup. Sony sends an email confirmation after creation.
- To review or remove one later, open Security > Manage Passkeys and choose Remove beside the entry.
More than one passkey can be registered. If a device stops working, another passkey on a device in the same cloud account may still allow sign-in. To return to password sign-in, disable Sign in with Passkey in Security settings and create a password. PS3 and PS Vita still require a device setup password rather than passkey sign-in.

How do I turn on 2FA / 2-step verification on PlayStation?
- Web: In Account Management, go to Security > 2-step Verification Status > Edit.
- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an authenticator app or SMS and follow the prompts. Save the backup codes somewhere secure. You can see them later under Security > Backup Codes, but only if you can sign in.
Sony says a verification code remains valid for 10 minutes after a sign-in attempt; selecting Resend Code issues a new one. 2SV is requested at the first sign-in after activation, after a manual sign-out, after a password reset, and after a sign-in ID or online ID change. Unexpected verification messages when you cannot change the sign-in method are a reason to contact Sony’s Online Assistant.

- Never share account details. Sony warns that another person who signs in could change the login information and lock you out, and sharing credentials violates its Terms of Service.
- Do not scan QR codes sent by strangers or sign in through links in unsolicited tournament, beta, reward or “your account was reported” messages.
- Do not provide credentials to sites offering free virtual currency or items.
- Limit who can message you through PlayStation privacy settings to reduce exposure to fake support or recovery solicitations.
- Avoid signing in on a shared or public console; if unavoidable, sign out afterward.
- Review Account Management’s Security settings for unfamiliar passkeys and other sign-in changes.
How do I recover a hacked PlayStation account?
If you suspect someone has accessed the account, secure the email account first, remove any passkey you do not recognize, then use Sony’s recovery route. Changing the PSN password and email does not necessarily remove an attacker-registered passkey: Dutch researcher @baas, also known as HackerOne 0xbaas, told Cyber Kendra in October 2026 that passkeys are tied to the account itself. That makes passkey review an important part of recovery.
- Secure the email: Change the password for the mailbox used as the PSN sign-in ID, and check it for unauthorized changes.
- Remove unknown passkeys: If you can access the account, go to Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys and remove entries you do not recognize.
- Recover sign-in: If you still control the email, choose Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account. If you cannot use the email or a device with a passkey, contact the Online Assistant.
- Contain device and payment risk: Sign out of PlayStation on all devices, deactivate consoles if needed, and consider removing payment methods.
- Check transactions: Review PlayStation Store transaction history before treating an unfamiliar charge as fraud.
An unexplained charge can also come from a subscription, a child purchase from the family manager’s wallet, a duplicate charge, or another account using the same card. Sony advises that if an account-change email does not state that PlayStation initiated the change, someone else may be trying to access the account. If you cannot change the sign-in method, contact Support.

An unfamiliar child account in Family Management is not something to dismiss as a harmless profile. In October 2026, users in Japan, the United States and Europe reported child accounts they said they had not added, sometimes alongside unexpected sign-in ID or email-change notices. The earliest cases traced by Japanese outlet Game Watch, as reported by Cyber Kendra, dated to at least 6 October; complaints spread more widely from 24 to 26 October.
As of 30 October 2026, Sony had not published a public root-cause advisory, affected-account count or company CVSS rating for these reports. Cyber Kendra and other outlets reported that Sony was investigating, but that is press reporting rather than a numbered Sony security advisory. User claims of a cryptographic 2SV bypass remain unverified. Cyber Kendra described a HackerOne report as High severity, CVSS 8.6 and Resolved/Closed, with a $5,000 total reward that included a $2,000 retest bonus; the technical write-up was not public. Claims that birth dates, phone numbers or home addresses were exposed have not been confirmed by Sony or the researcher; Cyber Kendra’s account of the report specifies email addresses and full names.
Reports also raised concern that purchase details could be used in support interactions to take over a family-manager account, even where 2SV or passkeys were enabled. Do not post receipts, transaction IDs or order emails publicly: reported support-desk takeover cases involved purchase details. This does not establish that every unfamiliar child account has the same cause, but it is a reason to treat one as a potential compromise.

What should I do if I find one?
- Open PS5 Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, or use Account Management > Family Management on the web, and record the unfamiliar account details privately.
- Contact PlayStation Support and ask for help removing the unauthorized child account. Sony’s US support documentation says a family manager cannot remove child members.
- While waiting, keep that child’s monthly spending limit at 0 and restrict communication and user-generated content.
- Remove unknown passkeys, change both PSN and email passwords, retain 2SV, and sign out of all devices.
- Review transaction history and consider removing payment methods. If you use passwords rather than passkeys, enable Require Password at Checkout.
Sony’s support page states: “Please note, child members cannot be removed from your family.” This means there is no self-service removal option in the documented US controls; Support is the appropriate route for an account you did not authorize.
Can my child use voice chat on PS5?
Yes, if the child’s communication settings allow it. To block voice chat, use Communication and User-Generated Content and set it to Restrict. That setting also blocks player-to-player text messages, with pre-written in-game messages remaining allowed, as well as user-generated-content sharing and viewing. On PS5, a child may request an exception for in-game communication, which an adult can approve or decline.
Do PlayStation parental controls work in Roblox?
They do not control Roblox communications. Sony’s Family app FAQ says Roblox communications are independent of parental-control settings selected for PS4 or PS5. Use Roblox’s own communication and privacy controls in addition to PlayStation family settings if you need to manage chat there.

First confirm that the console’s time zone is set, the child’s email is verified, and the child has signed in to PSN on the console. Playtime cannot be configured before a time zone is selected. If a control was changed while the child was in a game, have them sign out and back in; controls are account-based and should carry across devices. If the child is using both PS4 and PS5, playtime limits apply to both.
For privacy settings, the family manager can choose whether the child may make changes or whether adults retain control. With the Parent/Guardian option, adults edit the settings and may allow specific changes by the child, with a notification on each change. With Child, the child can edit settings and adults can view them; adults are still notified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a passkey and 2-step verification at the same time on PSN?
Sony presents passkeys as a password replacement and 2-step verification as an alternative sign-in safeguard. The documented settings do not describe a combined passkey-plus-2SV sign-in flow, so do not assume that enabling both creates two sequential challenges.
Can a child account be used offline without a parent approving every game?
Children can play offline subject to age ratings and the controls on their account. A parent’s approval is needed only when a restriction blocks a game or communication and an exception is requested.
Will changing my PlayStation password log every device out?
Sony’s recovery guidance includes signing out of PlayStation on all devices as a separate containment step when an account may be compromised. Do not assume a password change alone has ended every existing session.
Can I set parental controls for a child without a verified email address?
Sony’s guidance says email verification and a PSN sign-in on the console are required for parental controls to be effective. Complete both setup steps, then have the child sign out and back in if a changed setting still appears inactive.
