Usually, yes—but not immediately and not for every title. Denuvo Anti-Tamper itself is not designed to require a permanent internet connection. Irdeto, Denuvo’s developer, says a game commonly needs an online check during installation or its first launch, after which later launches can work offline. The exception is that a publisher, storefront, launcher, game update, hardware change, or online-only feature can impose another connection requirement.
For the best chance of playing without Wi-Fi, activate the exact game online, complete the game and launcher updates, launch it successfully once, put the launcher into its official offline mode, and test it with the connection disabled before travelling or relying on an outage.
What does Denuvo require for offline play?
Denuvo Anti-Tamper normally separates first-use activation from later game launches. Irdeto’s official documentation says gaming platforms require an internet connection at first launch so the license can be revalidated. It then states that “Any subsequent game launches do not require an online connection.” In other words, Denuvo is generally not permanent always-online DRM.

A title can still depend on a store client, publisher launcher, account service, update check, or network-backed feature. The accurate rule is therefore: Denuvo usually permits offline single-player launches after successful online activation, provided the local activation data remains valid and the game’s other components allow it.

Irdeto identifies two events that can require another connection: installing a game patch and making a significant hardware-configuration change. A publisher’s license terms can also require online activation during installation or first launch, limit the number of installations, or add another protection component.
How local activation works
TapTap’s developer documentation describes a local game token created after first activation. The token is encrypted and stored on the computer, allowing later launches without an internet connection while it remains valid. If the token expires, is damaged, or disappears, the platform must contact its licensing service again to activate the game.
This is why two Denuvo-protected games can behave differently even on the same PC. One may launch normally for months offline, while another may ask for a connection after an update, a hardware change, or a problem with its stored activation data.

How do I prepare a Denuvo game for Steam Offline Mode?
Steam’s offline mode must be prepared while the computer is connected. Prepare every game individually; successfully taking Steam offline does not prove that every installed title will launch.
- Start Steam online. Sign in with the account that owns the game and allow Steam to save the account credentials on that computer. Do not begin this process while Steam is already in offline mode.
- Finish all downloads. Update the Steam client and the game completely. Resolve paused, queued, or failed downloads first. A pending game patch can make a new online validation necessary.
- Launch the exact game once. Start it from Steam while connected. Wait for any first-run setup, publisher launcher, or Denuvo activation to finish, then reach the game’s normal menu or playable state.
- Exit normally. Close the game through its own menu and let Steam finish writing its local state. Avoid forcing the process closed or shutting down the PC during this step.
- Choose Steam’s offline command. In the Steam client, select Steam > Go Offline, then confirm the restart or offline transition. This stores the information Steam needs to start without a network.
- Test before disconnecting. With Steam now in offline mode, close and reopen the client, then launch the same game. For a realistic test, turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet after the offline transition and verify that the game reaches its menu.
SEGA’s Steam support guidance specifically says you must connect to the Steam Network and test each game you want to use in Offline Mode at least once. It also warns that forcibly closing Steam can erase required stored offline information. If that information is lost, Steam may not start without internet access. An outdated Steam client can show the message “This game cannot be started in Offline Mode.”

Why can one Denuvo game work offline while another cannot?
The launch process is a chain of separate requirements. Denuvo is only one link, so the strictest link determines whether the title starts without a connection.

Publisher and launcher rules can be stricter
A publisher’s end-user license agreement may require an online connection during installation or the first launch even when Denuvo itself does not require permanent connectivity. It may also limit installations or add components that perform their own checks.

Rockstar’s support documentation, for example, describes an activation error that appears when required offline activation data cannot be loaded. That does not prove every game using that launcher is always online; it shows that launcher-specific data can determine whether an offline start succeeds.
What can you do without an internet connection?
Offline mode is intended for content that is already installed and does not need a live service. A conventional single-player campaign can be available after activation, but availability is title-specific.
- Usually available: installed single-player content that has completed activation and does not call an online service at launch.
- Usually unavailable: multiplayer matchmaking, online co-op, leaderboards, live-service events, cloud synchronization, downloads, and online entitlement checks.
- Unavailable until reconnecting: new-product activation, game patches, and any revalidation triggered by invalid or missing local activation data.
Steam’s offline guidance says features that inherently require a connection are unavailable while offline. SEGA likewise directs players to reconnect for updates, activation of new products, and multiplayer modes. Cloud saves deserve particular caution: an offline session can use local saves, but synchronization with the account’s cloud copy cannot occur until the client is online again.

Why is my Denuvo game asking for internet again?
A second connection request usually means that the local activation state is no longer sufficient, not that every Denuvo launch is permanently online.
A patch was installed or is waiting
Irdeto lists installing a game patch as a reason for revalidation. Reconnect, let the game and launcher finish updating, start the title once online, and repeat the offline preparation process if necessary.
The PC changed substantially
A significant hardware-configuration change can trigger another check. A motherboard replacement, major system rebuild, or similar change may therefore invalidate an offline-ready state even if the game files themselves are unchanged. Reconnect and complete a successful launch before attempting offline mode again.
Offline data was lost or corrupted
Steam warns that a forced shutdown can remove information required for offline startup. Exit Steam normally whenever possible. If offline data is already missing, the practical recovery is to reconnect, sign in, allow the client to rebuild its state, launch the game online, and then select Steam > Go Offline again.
The Steam client is outdated
SEGA’s support instructions associate an outdated Steam client with the message “This game cannot be started in Offline Mode.” Reconnect long enough to update Steam, restart it normally, and retest the title while online before disconnecting.

The launcher cannot load its activation record
If a publisher launcher reports that activation requires an internet connection, its locally stored activation information may be missing or unreadable. Reconnect and complete the launcher’s sign-in or activation flow; then test the complete launch chain, not just the game executable.
What should you check before travelling without Wi-Fi?
Use this short checklist immediately before disconnecting:
- The store client is fully updated and signed in.
- The game has no queued, paused, or failed download.
- The game has launched successfully at least once while online.
- Any required publisher launcher has also completed its activation.
- The client has been switched to its official offline mode.
- The game has been closed normally and reopened with the network disabled.
- You have local save files for the session; cloud synchronization will wait until reconnection.
- You have not changed major hardware since the last successful activation.
Does Denuvo work on Steam-compatible handhelds?
Irdeto states that Denuvo Anti-Tamper is compatible with Valve Proton, the compatibility layer used by Linux-based systems such as Steam-compatible handheld gaming PCs. Compatibility with Proton does not guarantee offline operation for every title, however. The exact game, its launcher, its activation token, and its online features still determine whether it can start without a connection.
For a handheld, perform the same online preparation on that device: update the client and game, launch the title successfully, switch to offline mode, and test with wireless networking disabled. Do not assume that an offline-ready Windows installation automatically makes a separate Proton installation offline-ready.

Is “Denuvo games need internet every time” accurate?
No. Irdeto’s own description says Denuvo does not require a permanent online connection and that subsequent launches can work without internet. The statement becomes misleading when it ignores the first-launch activation, launcher requirements, patch-triggered checks, hardware changes, and online-only game modes that can still require connectivity.

The safest expectation is conditional: activate first, prepare the platform’s offline mode, keep local activation data intact, and verify the specific title before going offline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a Denuvo-protected game entirely offline?
Usually not if the platform or publisher requires activation during installation or first launch. You should complete the installation and initial license validation while connected; after that, an already-installed build may launch offline if its local activation data remains valid.
Will an offline session update my cloud saves?
No. Cloud synchronization needs a connection. You can continue using local save files offline, but the cloud copy cannot be uploaded or downloaded until the store client reconnects.
What happens if I replace my PC’s motherboard?
