Play the Shepard trilogy in this order: Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010), then Mass Effect 3 (2012). Their release order is also their story order, and playing them on one save line lets your decisions carry forward. For a new player, the simplest choice is Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which bundles all three remastered games and nearly all of their single-player DLC. Play Mass Effect: Andromeda afterward if you want another story in the universe; it is not a continuation of Shepard’s plot.
What order should I play the Mass Effect games in?
Play the original Shepard trilogy from first to last: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. The games follow a continuous arc, and the choices you make can affect later events, characters, and outcomes. Starting with the third game means encountering a finale built on relationships and decisions from the earlier two.

What is the best way to play the trilogy in 2026?
For a first playthrough, use Mass Effect Legendary Edition and start with its first game. The collection is reported for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One; it is playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. Andromeda is a separate purchase and is reported for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Keep a single save line
- Finish Mass Effect and keep the completed save.
- Start Mass Effect 2 and import that Shepard when prompted.
- Finish Mass Effect 2, then import its save into Mass Effect 3.
Talk to your crew regularly, particularly in the second game. Loyalty missions are not just optional character episodes: they help determine who survives the suicide mission. Keeping the same save line preserves the context that a fresh start or an interactive recap cannot fully recreate.
Can I skip Mass Effect 1?
You can. Mass Effect 2 includes the interactive comic Genesis, and Mass Effect 3 includes Genesis 2; each lets you select important earlier decisions in a short recap. They are useful if you cannot continue from a prior game, but they do not replace playing through the relationships and events. Skipping the first game also means missing some trilogy-wide achievements.
What does Legendary Edition include, and what is missing?
Legendary Edition is the most convenient way to play the trilogy with its major single-player story additions. The included content is spread through the games rather than all being available immediately: for example, the second game’s recruitment content determines when you can bring in Zaeed and Kasumi, and you cannot launch Lair of the Shadow Broker at the very beginning.

Most weapon and armor packs are integrated into stores and levels instead of being handed to you at the start. Pinnacle Station, a combat-simulator hub, is the notable first-game omission. Its source code was corrupted during earlier porting work, and it could not be remastered for the collection. It is not needed to follow the story. An unofficial PC mod port exists, but it is not part of the official collection.

When should I play the Mass Effect DLC?
The most useful approach is to play story expansions at points where they make sense for the plot, while leaving room for squad conversations. There is a genuine timing trade-off in Mass Effect 2: some players place its two late story packs before the finale for chronological flow, while others wait until afterward so Legion’s conversations are not cut short and Liara’s responses can reflect a completed romance.
Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky
Play it any time after your first departure from the Citadel. It is a self-contained addition, so it does not need to interrupt a specific main-story mission.
Mass Effect 2: recruit, build loyalty, then finish the mission
Recruit the available squadmates and complete their loyalty missions before the endgame. A practical recruitment sequence for distinctive squadmate dialogue is Zaeed, Kasumi, Mordin, Grunt, Garrus, Jack, Tali, Thane, and Samara. Complete Horizon after recruiting Garrus; the Collector Ship mission triggers automatically five missions after Horizon.
At a high level, handle loyalty missions for Mordin, Grunt, Jacob, Thane, Garrus, Zaeed, Samara, Kasumi, Miranda, and Jack before the Reaper IFF, then do Tali’s and Legion’s loyalty missions afterward. Once the Reaper IFF is installed, a hidden timer begins; you have about two missions before heavy losses. Use those opportunities for Tali and Legion rather than optional content.

- Defuse Tali and Legion’s argument if you want to preserve both relationships and their loyalty. Whether Tali is exiled, and whether you destroy the geth heretics, can also affect a later Mass Effect 3 check on Rannoch.
- For a first story-focused playthrough, do Lair of the Shadow Broker after the suicide mission if you want the fullest set of conversations. Then play Arrival as the final Mass Effect 2 content, immediately before starting the third game.
Arrival is the narrative bridge into Mass Effect 3. Playing it last preserves its sense of transition into the next game. A chronology-first route can place Lair of the Shadow Broker during the main campaign and Arrival before the finale instead; the post-finale timing is a practical alternative, not the only defensible order.
Mass Effect 3: pace the additions around the main story
- Begin with the prologue, Priority: Mars, and Priority: Citadel I.
- Play From Ashes (also listed in-game as Priority: Eden Prime) as soon as it becomes available to recruit Javik early.
- Continue to Palaven. Complete Grissom Academy before Priority: Citadel II, or it will fail.
- Once Tuchanka: Bomb unlocks, complete it within its three-mission failure timer.
- Do Rannoch: Admiral Koris before Priority: Rannoch.
- Play Omega after the mid-game Citadel stretch. Place Leviathan after Priority: Horizon.
- Save Citadel—including Shore Leave and the party—for late in the game, then complete Priority: Cerberus Headquarters and Priority: Earth.
Priority: Cerberus Headquarters is the point of no return, so finish the remaining activities you care about before launching it. Leaving Citadel until late gives the surviving roster a chance to attend and makes it work as a send-off. The Extended Cut ending content is included in Legendary Edition.
Is Andromeda part of Shepard’s story?
No. Mass Effect: Andromeda is set in the Heleus Cluster in 2819, with a new cast and a different central story. The Andromeda Initiative left the Milky Way in 2185—between Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3—on a one-way voyage lasting about 600 years. That departure provides a connection to the wider setting, but the game does not continue Shepard’s plot or resolve the Reaper-war ending.
Play it after Mass Effect 3 if you want more of the universe, rather than inserting it between the Shepard games. If you continue with Andromeda-related fiction, the novels offer additional context: Nexus Uprising (21 March 2017) follows the Nexus’s arrival and Sloane Kelly’s fall; Initiation (28 November 2017) follows Cora Harper before the arks launch; and Annihilation (6 November 2018) concerns a plague aboard the quarian ark Keelah Si’yah.

Are the novels and comics required to understand the games?
No. The games tell Shepard’s story without requiring novels or comics, and the books do not make Shepard their protagonist. Treat the print stories as optional enrichment: they add background on people and events around the games rather than supplying a missing chapter you must read to understand the main arc.
Optional novels around the trilogy
- Mass Effect: Revelation (1 May 2007, Drew Karpyshyn) is set in 2165 and follows David Anderson and Saren before the first game.
- Mass Effect: Ascension (29 July 2008, Drew Karpyshyn) takes place a few months after Mass Effect and follows Gillian Grayson, Kahlee Sanders, and Cerberus.
- Mass Effect: Retribution (27 July 2010, Drew Karpyshyn) is set after Mass Effect 2 and before the Reaper invasion, involving Cerberus and Reaper technology. Sources differ on the precise interval, so it is best placed broadly rather than assigned a specific month.
- Mass Effect: Deception (31 January 2012, William C. Dietz) follows Retribution before the invasion. It has been criticized for inconsistencies with the trilogy and is treated as non-canon by some franchise references; it is optional and contested, not required reading.
Optional comics and side stories
Dark Horse’s Mass Effect: The Complete Comics, published 21 October 2020, collects the series’ comics, including Redemption, Evolution, Invasion, Homeworlds, Foundation, and Discovery. For a games-first reader, the most directly connected additions are Redemption between the first and second games, which follows Liara recovering Shepard’s body, and Incursion, an Aria story set shortly before Mass Effect 2. The comics can be read later; interleaving every issue with the games is not necessary.

Use a flexible order that protects important character content and avoids timed failures, not a completionist checklist. The main story still works if you vary optional missions, but a few decision points can close off content or change who survives.
Mass Effect
- Recruit Liara on Therum early. Leaving her until after Virmire locks her out of a first-game romance and changes the circumstances of her arrival.
- Complete Feros or Noveria next, then go to Virmire. Their order is flexible.
- Before Virmire, finish Wrex’s Family Armor and UNC: Rogue VI if you are doing a consequential run. Virmire is the point of no return for certain first-game activities.
- Start Bring Down the Sky after leaving the Citadel for the first time, whenever it fits your schedule.
Mass Effect 2
After recruiting your team, prioritize the loyalty missions that shape the suicide mission. The Reaper IFF is the key timing pivot: do not trigger it until you are ready to use the limited window afterward on Tali and Legion. If your priority is avoiding cut-off conversations, leave the two late story packs for after the suicide mission as described above.

Mass Effect 3
Respect the timed and point-of-no-return missions: Grissom Academy before Priority: Citadel II, Tuchanka: Bomb within three missions after it unlocks, Rannoch: Admiral Koris before Priority: Rannoch, and outstanding optional content before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. The other DLC placements can be fitted around that backbone.

It is an animated side story about James Vega. Its placement is during the period around the second game and before his role in the third, so watching it after Mass Effect 2 is a straightforward option rather than a prerequisite.

Discovery follows a turian infiltrating the Andromeda Initiative. It is an Andromeda-adjacent story, so it makes more sense after the Shepard trilogy if you decide to explore that side of the setting.

Can I move my original PC saves into Legendary Edition?
The documented transfer method supports Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 PC saves copied from the Documents/BioWare folders into the Legendary Edition folders. Original Mass Effect saves cannot be copied successfully because the remaster changed systems including Mako handling, class weapon rules, and morality checks.
