For the closest classic follow-up to Ocarina of Time, start with Majora’s Mask. If what you want is a currently listed Switch game with 3D dungeons and items that open new paths, pick Skyward Sword HD. Wind Waker offers a seafaring change of pace on Switch 2; Breath of the Wild is the choice for setting your own route through Hyrule. Outside the series, TUNIC is a strong option if discovery and secrets matter more to you than matching Ocarina’s camera and combat. The right pick depends on what you want to carry forward: classic Zelda structure, exploration, puzzles, or the pleasure of finding things out.

There is no single best next game for every Ocarina player. Think about whether you want an N64-era adventure, structured 3D dungeons, a wider world to roam, a different viewpoint, or a game that makes discovery its own reward. Hardware matters too: Majora’s Mask and Wind Waker use subscription libraries, and Wind Waker’s route also requires Switch 2.

What should I play after Ocarina of Time?

Choose by the part of Ocarina you want another game to provide. Majora’s Mask is the most direct recommendation for an N64-era Zelda; Skyward Sword HD is the closer fit if you specifically want 3D dungeons and useful items. If you are ready to leave a more directed adventure behind, Breath of the Wild shifts the emphasis toward choosing your own route.

Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask together in its N64 Classics library, which makes Majora’s Mask the simplest next stop for someone who wants to stay with that classic-era experience. Nintendo’s retrospective is a listing, however, not evidence for every detail of the games’ narrative relationship. Nintendo’s Zelda retrospective

Before choosing, consider four questions:

  • Do you want another N64-era game? Start with Majora’s Mask.
  • Are dungeons and items the priority? Skyward Sword HD is the clearest currently listed Switch match among these recommendations.
  • Would a new kind of Hyrule adventure be welcome? Breath of the Wild favors finding your own way rather than following an Ocarina-shaped sequence.
  • Do you mainly want secrets and discovery? TUNIC carries that appeal into an isometric action game, but it is not a close mechanical copy of Ocarina.

Two practical questions can narrow the field further. First, do you already have Switch 2 and an Expansion Pack membership? That combination opens the documented GameCube Classics route to Wind Waker; an Expansion Pack membership on a standard Switch does not. Second, do you prefer button controls or motion controls? Skyward Sword HD allows either, so motion swordplay is not a reason to rule it out automatically.

Perspective is another useful filter. Ocarina is a 3D adventure, but a Zelda game need not share that viewpoint to be a satisfying follow-up. Link’s Awakening is top-down, Echoes of Wisdom is built around Zelda using echoes to solve problems, and TUNIC is isometric. Those choices preserve different pleasures—dungeons, puzzle experimentation, or secret-finding—without pretending to recreate Ocarina’s presentation.

Should I play Majora’s Mask next?

Yes, if you want the closest N64-era next stop; it is the strongest first recommendation for someone asking for another classic Zelda after Ocarina. Nintendo includes both games in N64 Classics, so the route is through a subscription library rather than a standalone Switch game listing.

For US players, N64 Classics requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The basic membership’s NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries are a different tier, so having Nintendo Switch Online alone is not enough for this access route. Nintendo’s current Expansion Pack page describes the service, and its Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ explains the membership requirement. These are service-access facts, not a promise that a game is permanently yours to keep.

Pick another game instead if you want a standalone game listing, a modern 3D presentation, or an adventure centered on open exploration. The classic-library route makes sense when the N64-era connection itself is part of what you want.

One trade-off is access rather than gameplay: an active membership is part of the route, and the N64 Classics app is not the same as buying a game to keep as a standalone Switch title. If you do not want another ongoing service expense, a separately listed game such as Skyward Sword HD, Breath of the Wild or Link’s Awakening may be a better fit. No specific price comparison is implied; check Nintendo’s store and membership page for the terms available in your country.

Which Zelda has Ocarina-style dungeons?

Skyward Sword HD is the most clearly documented Switch choice here for puzzle-filled 3D dungeons paired with items that open more exploration. Nintendo describes its adventure as taking Link through dungeons full of puzzles, and says acquired items can lead to further places to explore. Nintendo’s Skyward Sword HD listing

Skyward Sword HD: choose your control style

Motion controls are not mandatory. Nintendo’s listing also describes button-only controls, including play with a Switch Pro Controller, so the game remains a candidate if motion swordplay is not appealing. That choice is worth checking before buying if control preference is a deciding factor.

For someone who wants an Ocarina-like rhythm of exploring, solving puzzles and making progress through dungeons, Skyward Sword HD is the clearest match among the separately listed Switch games in this set. The point is structural: Nintendo specifically documents puzzle-filled dungeons and items that expand exploration. It is not a claim that the games have identical pacing, controls or story.

Skyward Sword is not presented as a chronological sequel to Ocarina. Nintendo frames it as an early story about Link, Zelda and the Master Sword. That makes it a thematic and structural alternative, not a direct continuation of Ocarina’s story.

Link’s Awakening: dungeons from a different viewpoint

If a change in perspective is fine, Link’s Awakening offers a different kind of Zelda adventure on Koholint Island, with trap-filled dungeons and rearrangeable Chamber Dungeons. It is a top-down alternative, not another 3D Ocarina. Its value is the island setting and altered scale rather than reproducing the N64 game’s presentation. Nintendo’s Link’s Awakening listing

That difference can be an advantage if your interest is in dungeon puzzles rather than seeing another adventure through Ocarina’s camera. The official listing also calls out Chamber Dungeons, which lets you rearrange rooms. Choose it for a compact-feeling island setting and dungeon play, not because it supplies the same 3D structure.

Can I play The Wind Waker on Switch?

Yes, through GameCube Classics on Switch 2 with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. A standard Switch does not gain access to the GameCube Classics library through the same membership, and the GameCube-style Switch 2 controller is optional rather than required. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack information identifies the Switch 2 and membership requirements.

Choose Wind Waker if you want a seafaring atmosphere and a change of world, not because it is the closest match to Ocarina’s N64-era structure. The access route described here is GameCube Classics; do not confuse it with a separately sold Wind Waker HD edition or expect an individual native Switch purchase through this library. If you do not own Switch 2, consider Majora’s Mask or one of the separately listed Switch games instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller question is separate from the access question. Nintendo identifies the GameCube-style Switch 2 controller as optional, so you do not need to buy it just to use the GameCube Classics route. Conversely, owning that controller does not unlock the library: the console and Expansion Pack membership conditions still apply.

This makes Wind Waker a conditional recommendation rather than the easiest answer for every reader. If you already meet the hardware and membership requirements and want a different world and seafaring atmosphere, it is a meaningful change of pace. If not, Skyward Sword HD, Breath of the Wild, Link’s Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom have separate Switch listings, while Majora’s Mask is available through the N64 Classics tier on supported Switch hardware.

Is Breath of the Wild a good follow-up to Ocarina?

It is a good follow-up if you want exploration more than a directed sequence of dungeons. Nintendo foregrounds roaming Hyrule, climbing, puzzle-filled Shrines and setting a personal route, making Breath of the Wild a deliberate change in emphasis from an Ocarina-style recommendation. Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild listing

If you are choosing between it and Tears of the Kingdom, start with Breath of the Wild if you have played neither. Nintendo calls Tears of the Kingdom its sequel; it builds on the pair’s open-world direction and features creative construction through abilities such as Ultrahand and Fuse. Tears may be the more appealing first purchase if those newer systems are specifically what you want, but the sequel relationship is a reason to consider playing Breath first.

Both games have Switch listings and Switch 2 editions. Nintendo says the Expansion Pack can include Switch 2 edition upgrade packs for qualifying owners of the base games; it does not supply either full game by subscription alone. Check the relevant edition and ownership requirements in Nintendo’s current listing before treating an upgrade pack as the game itself.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The distinction is useful if you are comparing the cost of entry. A subscription tier may provide access to a Classics library, while these games have their own listings and the Expansion Pack does not replace ownership of the base game. An upgrade pack is for qualifying owners of the corresponding base game; it is not an automatic full-game entitlement. Confirm the exact edition and ownership conditions before purchase, particularly if you are moving between Switch and Switch 2.

Choose Breath of the Wild when the appeal is deciding where to go, climbing and finding puzzle Shrines along your own route. Choose Tears of the Kingdom when its creative construction systems are the specific draw, while keeping in mind Nintendo describes it as the sequel. Neither is the default choice if what you most want is a tightly directed, dungeon-led follow-up; Skyward Sword HD is the more direct match for that preference in this list.

What if I want puzzles and secrets, but not another 3D Zelda?

Echoes of Wisdom and TUNIC both reward a different kind of curiosity, but they do so from different places in the genre. Echoes of Wisdom remains a Zelda adventure, while TUNIC is a non-Zelda isometric action game; neither should be presented as an identical 3D Ocarina experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Echoes of Wisdom: solve problems with echoes

Nintendo describes Zelda using the Tri Rod to create echoes of objects and creatures, then using those echoes to solve puzzles and fight. That makes it the choice here if you want Zelda’s perspective and puzzle improvisation rather than another Link-led 3D adventure. Nintendo also documents a free visual-enhancement update for Switch 2; that update is not a separate Switch 2 edition.

The distinction matters when you are checking a store listing or deciding what you own. The documented route is a Switch game listing with a free visual-enhancement update for Switch 2, not a separate Switch 2 edition. Do not treat the update as an additional full game, nor assume it provides a separate purchase entitlement.

TUNIC: discover the rules as you go

Publisher Finji describes TUNIC as an isometric action game set in an intricately connected world, with hidden secrets, technical combat and manual pages discovered during play. Its sense of discovery makes it a useful recommendation for someone who enjoyed uncovering secrets in Zelda. Its isometric view and action combat are meaningful differences, so choose it for discovery—not as a substitute for Ocarina’s camera, controls or structure. Nintendo’s TUNIC Switch listing

That makes TUNIC a recommendation based on a particular player motivation, not a claim that it belongs to the same genre in every respect. The manual pages are discovered during play, and the world is described as intricately connected; those details support the comparison to the pleasure of piecing things together. The isometric perspective and technical combat are equally important to set expectations. If the part of Ocarina you want back is its familiar 3D camera or Zelda-specific combat, TUNIC may not satisfy that wish.

Cadence of Hyrule: a rhythm-game detour

Cadence of Hyrule is an optional side path for a reader willing to switch play styles. It pairs the Zelda setting with rhythm-timed action and a randomly generated overworld and dungeons. That makes it a less direct substitute for Ocarina than the main recommendations above, but it can suit someone who is curious about a Zelda-flavored adventure with a different rhythm and structure. Do not choose it expecting a conventional 3D dungeon adventure.

What do I need to access the classic games?

In the US service context, the membership tier and console determine whether the classic-library recommendations are available. The relevant distinction is not simply whether a game is a Zelda title: Nintendo puts different console libraries behind different access conditions.

Game or library What the cited Nintendo information requires What that means for this choice
N64 Classics, including Majora’s Mask Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Membership access is required; it is not a standalone Switch purchase.
GameCube Classics, including The Wind Waker Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack An Expansion Pack membership on standard Switch is not enough for GameCube Classics.
Separately listed Switch games The games have their own Nintendo Switch listings Do not assume an Expansion Pack membership supplies a full game or a Switch 2 edition upgrade.

Nintendo’s pages are US-facing, and membership availability can vary by country. Its support FAQ states: “There are no plans to make the games available outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.” That describes Nintendo’s stated plans on the checked support page, not a guarantee that can never change. The basic Nintendo Switch Online tier and Expansion Pack should not be treated as interchangeable. Nintendo’s classic libraries for NES, Super NES and Game Boy are part of the basic-tier distinction described in its service information; N64 Classics require Expansion Pack. GameCube Classics add the Switch 2 hardware requirement. If a game appears in a Classics application, that does not mean the application or its games are permanent free downloads: active membership is part of access.

These requirements also affect which recommendation is convenient. If you already subscribe to Expansion Pack, Majora’s Mask may be the easiest next classic to access, and Wind Waker is an option only if you also have Switch 2. If you do not have the required membership or hardware, compare the separately listed games instead. What is changing for Ocarina of Time in November 2026?

Nintendo’s US store listing dates a new physical Switch 2 edition of Ocarina of Time for November 5, 2026. As of October 30, 2026, that date is still in the future and the listing is a preorder. This is an edition of the game the reader is moving on from, not another game to play after it; check the listing again after its stated date for current availability. Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time listing

That date is worth noting because a new edition can make the starting game’s store page more visible, but it does not change the recommendations here: the question is what to play after Ocarina. At the October 30, 2026 cutoff, the physical Switch 2 edition is forthcoming, not an already released alternative. Recheck Nintendo’s listing after November 5 for availability and any changes to the Classics comparison.

How we picked these alternatives

The recommendations match documented features to different reasons someone might want another game after Ocarina of Time. They are not an objective ranking based on comparative scores or firsthand play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Classic-era continuity: Majora’s Mask is included because Nintendo lists it with Ocarina in N64 Classics.
  • Dungeon structure: Skyward Sword HD is included for Nintendo-documented puzzle-filled dungeons and items that expand exploration.
  • Change of setting or direction: Wind Waker is the seafaring alternative; Breath of the Wild is the open-exploration alternative.
  • Different kinds of puzzle-solving: Link’s Awakening shifts to a top-down island adventure, while Echoes of Wisdom uses Zelda’s echoes mechanic.
  • Discovery beyond the Zelda series: TUNIC is included for its connected world, hidden secrets and in-game manual pages, with its perspective and combat differences made explicit.
  • Practical access: The options are distinguished by their documented Switch listings, subscription requirements and Switch 2 conditions.

The comparisons focus on what you may miss from Ocarina—N64-era context, a directed adventure, 3D dungeons, puzzles, exploration or secrets—and then identify which recommendation best matches that preference. Control style and access route are part of the decision, too. Skyward Sword HD offers a button-control option alongside motion controls; Majora’s Mask requires the Expansion Pack library route; Wind Waker adds Switch 2 eligibility; the separately listed games have their own purchase pages.

No comparative sales, completion-time, popularity or review-score figures are used to rank these games. The recommendations are editorial matches to the features Nintendo and Finji document, not firsthand play claims. Before purchasing, use the appropriate publisher or Nintendo product page to verify the game, edition, format and platform you intend to buy.

What to buy or check next

If you want one straightforward separately listed purchase to compare with Ocarina, Skyward Sword HD is the most direct pick for 3D dungeons and item-led exploration. Nintendo’s page viewed for this recommendation displays a digital edition, so if you are shopping through a retailer such as Amazon, confirm that the listing is actually for the physical Switch game if that is the format you want. Search by the full game name and platform rather than assuming every result is the same edition.

Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom are also game-specific options with Nintendo listings. Verify platform and format on any store page, especially when comparing Switch and Switch 2 editions or checking whether an update is a separate edition. A GameCube-style Switch 2 controller is optional for Wind Waker’s Classics access, and buying one does not replace the Switch 2 and Expansion Pack requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is relevant if your choice is Majora’s Mask or Wind Waker, but a subscription is access to a service library, not a standalone purchase of either game. TUNIC may be relevant through game-retail listings if you want the non-Zelda discovery option. These are practical shopping distinctions, not a reason to choose a game based on an unverified offer or stock listing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Majora’s Mask a direct story sequel to Ocarina of Time?

Nintendo’s cited retrospective places both games in its N64 Classics context, but that listing alone does not establish their full narrative or timeline relationship. If timeline placement is your deciding factor, consult a dedicated Nintendo story or timeline source rather than inferring it from the Classics catalog.

Can I buy the N64 Classics games individually for Switch?

Nintendo Support says there are no plans to make the Classics games available outside Nintendo Switch Online. That is Nintendo’s stated position on its support page, not a permanent guarantee about future policy: Nintendo Classics FAQ.

Does a standard Nintendo Switch let me play The Wind Waker through Expansion Pack?

No. The Wind Waker is in GameCube Classics, which requires Switch 2 as well as Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The same membership on a standard Switch does not provide access to GameCube Classics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the GameCube-style Switch 2 controller to play The Wind Waker?

No. Nintendo describes the controller as optional. It does not provide access by itself, either; Switch 2 and an active Expansion Pack membership are still required for GameCube Classics.

Is Nintendo Switch Online by itself enough for Majora’s Mask?

No. N64 Classics requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The basic membership’s NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries are a different tier. Access to Classics also depends on an active membership.

Does Expansion Pack include Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?

No. Nintendo’s listings treat them as separately listed games. Expansion Pack can include Switch 2 edition upgrade packs for qualifying owners of the base games, but the subscription alone does not supply either full game.

Is Echoes of Wisdom a separate Switch 2 edition?

Nintendo documents a free visual-enhancement update for Switch 2. That is an update, not a separate Switch 2 edition; check the product listing for the exact game and platform details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the November 2026 Ocarina of Time edition count as a new Zelda to play after the original?

No. Nintendo’s listing describes a new physical Switch 2 edition of Ocarina of Time itself, so it is a new edition of the starting game rather than a different adventure. Its listed release date is November 5, 2026: Nintendo’s product listing.

Is TUNIC a close Ocarina of Time clone?

No. Finji describes TUNIC as an isometric action game with a connected world, hidden secrets, technical combat and manual pages discovered during play. It is a discovery-focused alternative, but its viewpoint and combat differ from Ocarina’s.

Which game should I play first if I have played neither Breath of the Wild nor Tears of the Kingdom?

Breath of the Wild is the suggested starting point because Nintendo calls Tears of the Kingdom its sequel. Choose Tears first only if its creative construction systems, including Ultrahand and Fuse, are specifically what you want.

The Bottom Line

Start with Majora’s Mask if you want the closest N64-era next step. Pick Skyward Sword HD for puzzle-filled 3D dungeons and item-led exploration, Breath of the Wild for freedom to roam, or Wind Waker for a seafaring change of pace if you have Switch 2 and Expansion Pack. For a different perspective, try Link’s Awakening or Echoes of Wisdom; for secrets beyond Zelda, try TUNIC. Check the access route and edition before buying: the Classics games require an active membership, and Wind Waker’s GameCube Classics route is Switch 2-only.
