Pair the controller with Android first, then launch Open Nectar and use its in-app settings button to confirm or remap the controls. Open Nectar is an unofficial native Android port of the original GameCube versions of Pikmin and Pikmin 2; one APK can hold both games, and it supports Bluetooth and USB controllers. You still need your own compatible game disc images, and the app is not an official Nintendo Android release.
What do I need before using a controller with Pikmin on Android?
You need an Android device that meets Open Nectar’s documented requirements, a compatible game image for each game you want to install, and a Bluetooth or USB game controller. Pairing happens in Android’s system settings; button verification and remapping happen inside Open Nectar. These are separate steps: seeing a controller in Android confirms the operating system has paired it, but you should still check that the game recognizes the device and that its actions are assigned as you expect.
| Requirement | What the documentation specifies |
|---|---|
| Android version | Android 10 or newer |
| Processor architecture | 64-bit ARM64 device |
| Graphics support | OpenGL ES 3.0 |
| Free storage | About 1 GB of internal storage |
| Game data | Your own compatible Pikmin and Pikmin 2 disc images |
| Controller connection | Bluetooth or USB; SDL2-compatible controllers are supported |
The storage figure is the documented free-space requirement, not a guarantee that every phone has room for every combination of games and other files. Check available internal storage before starting an install. The launcher validates an image and extracts game assets into Open Nectar’s private storage, so installing a game involves more than simply selecting a file.

Open Nectar’s Android launcher accepts ISO and GCM inputs. RVZ, WIA and GCZ compressed images are not supported directly on Android, so convert those files to ISO on a computer using a legitimate copy of the relevant game before selecting them in the Android file picker. If the picker cannot use the file you selected, check the format before troubleshooting the controller; controller pairing cannot resolve an image-format problem.

Which game editions can be installed?
The documented supported builds are Pikmin USA Rev 1, Pikmin Europe, Pikmin 2 USA and Pikmin 2 Europe. Each game has to be installed from its own compatible image: selecting one image does not install both Pikmin and Pikmin 2. The launcher checks the selected image and extracts the required assets into Open Nectar’s private storage; it does not modify the disc image.
The regional choice also affects the listed language set. Open Nectar lists English, French, German, Spanish and Italian for the European builds, while the USA builds are listed as English. The supported-build list is specific, so do not assume an unlisted revision will install just because it is from the same game or region.
How do I install Pikmin and pair a Bluetooth controller?
Install the current Open Nectar APK, add each game from its own image, pair the controller in Android, and then verify the bindings in the game’s settings. The following order avoids most “Android sees it but the game does not” problems. If your phone uses slightly different labels for Android settings, look for the connected-device and Bluetooth pairing controls; Google Android Help describes the standard route as Settings, Connected devices, Pair new device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Install the current APK. At the time of the October 26, 2026 release listing, Open Nectar 1.1 is the latest release. Download the APK from the project’s official release page and install it according to Android’s security prompts. A later release may have different menu labels. Prefer the current release over an older APK because Open Nectar is actively changing Android controller behavior and other game issues.
- Open the launcher and install Pikmin. The launcher displays separate covers for Pikmin and Pikmin 2. Tap Install under Pikmin, choose the compatible ISO or GCM file, and wait for validation and asset extraction to finish. Select the image through the Android file picker and allow the process to complete before leaving the launcher.
- Install Pikmin 2 separately if wanted. Tap Install under Pikmin 2 and select the corresponding Pikmin 2 image. Do not expect the Pikmin image to supply the second game. Open Nectar describes its setup as one APK carrying both games, with the installer selecting the game that matches the image you provide.
- Put the controller into pairing mode. Use the controller’s own pairing command. On Android, open Settings, choose Connected devices, choose Pair new device, and select the controller when it appears. Android’s controller guidance supports either Bluetooth or a wired connection. The exact physical pairing command varies by controller, so use its own instructions if it does not appear in the device list.
- Launch the installed game. Tap the Pikmin or Pikmin 2 cover in Open Nectar. Bluetooth and USB input are supported, and the on-screen touch controls remain available as a fallback. If you paired the gamepad after Open Nectar was already open, close and relaunch the app before testing it.
- Open the game settings. On Android, press the in-app settings button. Open Nectar says this opens the same menu that F1 opens on desktop. Go to the controls section and check that the intended gamepad is detected. You do not need a desktop keyboard to access the menu on Android.
- Select Classic control mode. Classic is the controller-oriented mode. Mouse Pointer mode is designed for a mouse, so it is not the natural starting point for a gamepad. If you are using a controller, choose Classic first, then judge whether the actions feel right.
- Remap and test the important actions. Use the action names shown by the game rather than the letters printed on the controller. Verify throw, whistle, camera movement, group, cancel or dismiss, and pause before beginning a long day or cave run. Testing those actions at the start is easier than discovering a reversed or missing binding while playing.
After pairing, Android should list the controller among connected devices. Open Nectar’s controller menu is the next checkpoint: make sure the intended physical pad is active, then try its inputs and inspect the action bindings. If the game responds to touch controls but not the controller, that points toward device detection or mapping rather than a failure to install the game.
What buttons control throw, whistle, camera and pause?
The documented layout is a starting map for the Classic mode. Physical labels vary between Xbox-style, PlayStation-style, Switch-style and generic controllers, and automatic mapping can place an action on a different-looking button. Treat the action name as the reliable reference: the task is to find which input performs the action in the game, not to make every physical controller’s printed lettering match a GameCube label.
| Action | Documented control label | What to check on a different controller |
|---|---|---|
| Throw / confirm | A | Find the face button assigned to the game’s throw or confirm action. |
| Whistle / cancel | B | Use the button named whistle or cancel, not necessarily the button printed B. |
| Dismiss | X | Check the binding screen if a generic pad assigns this elsewhere. |
| Group | Y | Verify the group action before managing several Pikmin. |
| Change camera | Z | The physical equivalent can differ outside a GameCube-style layout. |
| Rotate camera left | L | Usually a shoulder input, but confirm the detected binding. |
| Rotate camera right | R | Usually the opposite shoulder input; remap if the direction is reversed. |
| Pause / skip a cutscene | Start | Check the menu binding if the controller calls this Menu, + or Options. |
Open Nectar also documents a C-stick function for Pikmin formation and a D-pad. Because controller families expose those controls differently, test the left stick, right stick or C-stick, D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons and Start in the binding screen rather than assuming a printed label is correct. In particular, do not overlook the right stick: a controller may offer a different physical layout from the GameCube-style labels used in the documented action map.
Make a short test pass before relying on the layout. Confirm that the left stick moves as expected, the camera can be adjusted, the D-pad responds, the shoulder controls turn the camera in the intended directions, and the face buttons perform their named actions. If an action is on an inconvenient button, use the controls menu to remap it rather than changing your Android Bluetooth setup.

Which Bluetooth controllers work with Open Nectar?
Open Nectar states that it supports SDL2-compatible Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro and generic controllers, with automatic mapping for many devices. On Android, both Bluetooth and USB controllers are supported. Google Android Help also notes that a game controller can connect either by Bluetooth or by a wired connection; the operating-system pairing step and the game’s input mapping remain distinct.
What to look for in a controller
- Standard Android or HID support: A controller that presents itself as a conventional Android gamepad is more likely to be detected without extra software.
- Reliable analog sticks: The sticks handle movement and camera or formation control, so drift or an inconsistent center can make Pikmin movement difficult.
- A usable D-pad: Menu navigation and directional commands are easier when the D-pad has distinct presses.
- Remappable inputs: Open Nectar can correct automatic mappings, but a controller with its own remapping options gives you another way to resolve unusual layouts.
- A practical mounting setup: For long sessions, a phone clip or a tablet stand can be more comfortable than holding the device separately. This is an accessory preference, not an Open Nectar requirement.
- A wired fallback: A USB-C controller or a compatible USB adapter can bypass Bluetooth pairing when wireless discovery is unreliable. This is an alternative connection, not a prerequisite for using Open Nectar.
When comparing options, focus on Android/Bluetooth compatibility, whether you can correct a mapping, stick and D-pad quality, comfort with your phone or tablet, and the availability of a wired fallback. There is no need to buy a specific brand for the documented setup, and the project does not promise that every generic controller will map perfectly. Automatic mapping depends on how the controller identifies its buttons, so the action names in Open Nectar’s controls menu are the authority for the final layout. Check a seller’s Android compatibility and return terms if you are unsure whether a particular pad will work with your device.
Bluetooth or USB: which should I use?
Bluetooth is the straightforward wireless option: pair the gamepad in Android, then launch or relaunch Open Nectar and verify it in the game’s controls menu. USB is useful if you prefer a wired connection or Bluetooth discovery is unreliable, provided your phone and controller can make a compatible wired connection. Neither connection changes the need for the correct game image or for checking the control bindings. Choose based on the controller you already own, the connection your phone supports, and whether you prefer a cable or wireless play.
Why is my controller connected to Android but not working in Open Nectar?
Android pairing and in-game input detection are separate stages. Work through the branch that matches what you see instead of immediately reinstalling the game. First establish whether Android still lists the controller; then check whether Open Nectar has selected it and whether its actions are mapped correctly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Android lists the controller, but Open Nectar does not respond
- Close Open Nectar completely and relaunch it after pairing.
- Open Android’s Settings and confirm the controller remains under Connected devices.
- Start the intended game and open the in-app settings button.
- Inspect the controls area for the detected controller and press a button on the gamepad so the app can identify the active device.
- If more than one input device is connected, disconnect unused pads and virtual input devices temporarily, then repeat the check.
Touch controls are a valid fallback while diagnosing the gamepad. They also help distinguish a controller-detection problem from a game-installation problem: if the game runs with touch input, focus on the control bindings and device enumeration. If the controller is not listed by Android either, return to the controller’s pairing procedure and Android Bluetooth settings before changing Open Nectar’s bindings.
The buttons are reversed or the wrong action fires
This is normally a layout or automatic-mapping issue, not a Bluetooth failure. Open the F1-equivalent settings menu, choose the controls area, and remap actions by name: throw or confirm, whistle or cancel, dismiss, group, camera, and pause. Test each change immediately, because a controller’s A/B/X/Y lettering can follow a different convention from the labels shown by the game. If only camera rotation is reversed, check the left and right camera bindings rather than resetting the whole controller.
Touch buttons cover the picture
Open Nectar includes Android touch controls and touch menus. The project says their layout can be moved and resized. Once the external controller is responding, use the current release’s touch-control settings to reposition or hide the overlay so it does not obscure the game view. The touch layer is optional input convenience, not a required part of a Bluetooth setup.

The launcher asks me to choose a file
That prompt is expected. Open Nectar does not include or download Nintendo game data; it expects you to provide a compatible disc image, verifies it, and extracts the required assets locally. Use a dump you are entitled to use, and avoid unofficial mirrors for copyrighted game files. The launcher uses separate install entries for Pikmin and Pikmin 2, so choose the matching game’s image for each entry.
Installation fails for an RVZ, WIA or GCZ file
Those compressed formats are not direct Android inputs in the documented workflow. On a computer, convert the relevant image to ISO using a legitimate copy of the game, transfer the ISO to the Android device, and select it from the file picker. ISO and GCM are the documented formats that can be selected directly on Android. Do not mistake a rejected image for a controller compatibility problem.
A virtual device becomes the active player
The release notes explain that, on Android, the controller that sends the first button press becomes Player 1. Some phones can enumerate a virtual device before the physical controller. Disconnect or ignore unwanted virtual inputs, then press a button on the intended gamepad before navigating the control menu. If several controllers are connected, temporarily leave only the intended pad active while checking which input Open Nectar is using.
How do I update Open Nectar without losing saves?
Install the new APK over the existing installation. Do not uninstall the old version first: the release notes warn that uninstalling can delete Android app data, including assets and saves. This matters because the installed assets and saves are stored as app data; removing the app before updating is not the recommended update path.
- Keep the current Open Nectar installation in place.
- Download the newer APK from the project’s release listing.
- Approve Android’s update prompt so the package is installed over the existing app.
- Launch the app and confirm that the installed game covers, saves and controller bindings are still present.
- If a release changes input behavior, reopen the controls menu and verify the important actions before playing.
Open Nectar’s release notes are worth checking when a controller issue appears after an update, because menu locations and input behavior can change between versions. As of the October 26, 2026 listing, version 1.1 is the latest release; that status is time-sensitive, so check the official release page for a newer APK rather than treating the version number as permanent.

Open Nectar is the Android-focused, unofficial native port covered by this guide. It packages support for the original GameCube releases of Pikmin and Pikmin 2 in one APK and installs assets from the user’s own compatible images. The documented Android path does not require Dolphin; it uses Open Nectar’s launcher and its local asset-extraction process instead.
That distinction matters because Open Nectar is not an official Nintendo Android release and does not supply the games themselves. Your legal game images remain a prerequisite, and compatibility depends on the supported regional builds and the port’s current implementation. Google Android Help covers the phone’s Bluetooth pairing workflow; Open Nectar’s own documentation covers its game setup and in-app controls.

What changed in the current release?
Open Nectar 1.1 is listed as released on October 26, 2026. Its release notes mention Android controller changes, Pikmin 2 co-op fixes, sound restoration and a launcher redesign. Those notes are version-specific, so an update can alter menu locations, mapping behavior or touch-control options. The documented mention of co-op fixes does not change the basic controller setup described here: pair or connect the device, open the game, and verify input in the controls menu.
Menus and compatibility may change in later releases. If a future APK presents a different settings path, look for the in-app controls or input section and apply the same sequence: pair in Android, launch after pairing, choose Classic mode, then verify and remap actions by name. The current release information is a snapshot of the October 26, 2026 listing, not a promise that every future build will use the same screens.

Which languages are included with the European builds?
Open Nectar lists English, French, German, Spanish and Italian for the European Pikmin and Pikmin 2 builds. The USA builds are listed as English.
Does selecting an image change or overwrite my original file?
No. Open Nectar verifies the selected image and extracts the required assets into its private Android storage; the disc image itself is not copied or modified by the launcher.
Why can a phone’s virtual gamepad become Player 1 before my Bluetooth controller?
Open Nectar’s release notes say that on Android the controller that sends the first button press becomes Player 1, and some phones can enumerate a virtual device before the physical pad. Disconnect unwanted virtual inputs or press a button on the intended controller first.
Can I install an RVZ, WIA or GCZ image directly on Android?
No. Open Nectar documents ISO and GCM as direct Android inputs. Convert a compatible compressed image to ISO on a computer using a legitimate copy of the game, then select the ISO on the phone.
Will every generic Bluetooth controller map correctly?
Not necessarily. Open Nectar supports generic SDL2-compatible controllers with automatic mapping, but the result can vary by how a controller identifies its buttons. Check the in-game bindings and remap any actions that do not match your preferred layout.
How should I update without losing assets or saves?
Install the newer APK over the existing app. Do not uninstall first, because Open Nectar’s release notes warn that uninstalling can delete Android app data, including assets and saves.
The Bottom Line
For the simplest setup, pair a standard Android-compatible gamepad in Android, install each game from its own supported ISO or GCM image, then launch Open Nectar in Classic mode and test the action bindings. Use the in-app controls menu to remap mismatched buttons; use USB as an alternative if Bluetooth pairing is unreliable. Open Nectar is unofficial, requires your own game images, and its menus and compatibility can change with later releases.
