Choose a PHP host that offers a currently supported PHP branch, lets you upgrade deliberately, and provides a tested rollback and recovery path. For a new application, PHP 8.4 or 8.5 is the sensible target when your code and extensions support it. PHP 8.3 receives security-only maintenance, PHP 8.2 leaves support on 31 December 2026, and PHP 8.1 and older are unsupported. A trustworthy host must also match your framework, database, extensions, web server, HTTPS, resource limits, isolation model, patch process, backups, and migration needs—not merely advertise “PHP hosting.”
This guide gives you a version-lifecycle check, a host-question checklist, a comparison scorecard, and a safe switching procedure for WordPress and other PHP applications.
Which PHP versions should a host support?
At minimum, look for PHP 8.4 and 8.5 as selectable production runtimes, plus a clear policy for removing older branches. PHP’s release policy provides two years of active support followed by two years of security-only support. That distinction matters: active support normally includes regular bug fixes, while security-only support is intended for critical security corrections.
| PHP branch | Status at 21 October 2026 | Security-support end date | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHP 8.5 | Active support; PHP 8.5.12 listed as a current stable release | 31 December 2029 | Preferred target for a new deployment when the application is compatible |
| PHP 8.4 | Active support; PHP 8.4.27 listed as a current stable release | 31 December 2028 | Strong new-deployment choice with a long maintenance runway |
| PHP 8.3 | Security-only support | 31 December 2027 | Reasonable compatibility bridge, but plan an upgrade |
| PHP 8.2 | Security-only support | 31 December 2026 | Short-term compatibility option only; schedule migration before the end date |
| PHP 8.1 and older | Unsupported | Already ended | Do not choose for a new production site |
PHP.net listed PHP 8.5.12 and PHP 8.4.27 as current stable releases on 21 October 2026. Patch numbers can change, so ask a host which exact patch level your website receives and how quickly security releases are deployed. A control panel may show one version while the website uses another; the web runtime is the one that protects and executes your application.

Why active and security-only support are different
During the first two years of a branch’s life, maintainers provide active support. For the following two years, support is limited to critical security issues. The longer a branch remains in security-only status, the more likely libraries and frameworks will move ahead of it. Treat the end date as a migration deadline rather than a date to begin investigating.
What if a host advertises “PHP supported”?
That phrase is not specific enough. Request a written matrix showing selectable branches, current patch levels, removal dates, and whether each version applies to websites, command-line jobs, and scheduled tasks. Ask the host to demonstrate the runtime from your account, because shell and web-server configurations can differ.
How do I match the host to my PHP application?
Start with the application’s tested PHP range, then map every dependency to the host’s platform. “Runs PHP” does not guarantee that your framework, extensions, database driver, queue, or background jobs will work.

Record the application requirements
- Framework and application version, including its documented PHP range.
- Required extensions such as database drivers,
mbstring, intl, curl, GD or Imagick, ZIP, and OPcache. - Database engine and version, including character-set and transaction requirements.
- Memory, execution-time, upload-size, file-size, and process limits.
- Cron schedules, queue workers, cache services, long-running processes, and command-line PHP requirements.
- Web-server features, rewrite rules, TLS settings, deployment access, and environment-variable handling.
Keep a copy of the tested version range in your deployment notes. If the application is maintained by a vendor, ask which PHP branch they test in continuous integration and which extensions they assume.
WordPress-specific baseline
WordPress currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended. Those are baseline requirements, not a guarantee that every theme and plugin is compatible with the newest branch. Test the complete site—including plugins, scheduled tasks, checkout flows, uploads, and administrative screens—before changing production.

Database and extension checks
Ask whether the advertised database version is available to your account rather than only on the host’s newest servers. Confirm the exact PHP extension names and whether they are enabled for both web requests and command-line jobs. A missing database driver can prevent the application from starting; a missing image, internationalisation, ZIP, or cURL extension may break a feature only when a user invokes it.
What upgrade and rollback controls should a secure host provide?
A safe host makes PHP changes controlled, observable, and reversible. The strongest process lets you test a copy of the site, scan for incompatibilities, schedule a maintenance window, and roll back if errors appear.
Staging and compatibility testing
Ask whether the plan includes a staging environment that can be cloned from production and protected from search indexing. Test the proposed branch with production-like data, integrations, cron jobs, payment callbacks, and deployment scripts. WordPress hosting guidance advises testing the full stack before making a new PHP version the production default.
Change and rollback procedure
- Confirm the target branch, patch level, extension set, and configuration differences.
- Create a restorable database and file backup, and verify that the backup can be read.
- Clone the site to staging and run automated tests plus the critical user journeys.
- Record the current PHP branch and configuration so you can reproduce it during rollback.
- Schedule the production change during a low-traffic maintenance window.
- Change the web runtime, monitor logs and error rates, and test health checks immediately.
- Rollback to the previous branch if the application fails, then investigate with the host and developer.
Ask how long the old branch remains available after an upgrade and whether rollback is a one-click control or a support ticket. A host that removes the previous runtime immediately leaves you with fewer recovery options.
Notifications and end-of-life planning
Find out how the host announces deprecations, removals, emergency patches, and configuration changes. You should receive enough notice to test a replacement branch before the current one reaches end of life. Ask whether notifications go to the account owner, a technical contact, or both.

How can I judge HTTPS, account isolation, and server security?
HTTPS, timely patching, and isolation between customers are core parts of PHP hosting security. Confirm what is included in your plan instead of assuming that a shared server’s marketing page describes your account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
HTTPS and certificate operations
HTTPS should be included and renew automatically. Ask whether certificates cover the primary domain, subdomains, aliases, and staging hosts, and how renewal failures are detected. Verify that HTTP redirects, secure cookies, modern TLS settings, and mixed-content remediation are supported.
Account and process isolation
Ask whether each account runs under its own operating-system user identity and whether PHP workers run as that account rather than as a shared service user. WordPress guidance specifically recommends asking hosts how they secure accounts and run PHP using the account username. Also ask whether one compromised site can read neighboring customers’ files, temporary directories, process data, or database credentials.
Patching and incident response
Request the host’s target response time for critical PHP, operating-system, web-server, and database vulnerabilities. Clarify which components the host patches, which remain your responsibility, and how advisories are communicated. The PHP security notice issued on 21 October 2026 illustrates why this matters: critical flaws can affect any server running a PHP application, and supported users are expected to update.
Ask what emergency controls are available if a patch cannot be applied immediately: disabling a vulnerable feature, restricting access, isolating a site, or taking it offline. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises considering taking a system offline when immediate remediation is not feasible.

What backup and recovery evidence should a host provide?
Backups are useful only when they are complete, protected, and restorable. Require details rather than accepting “daily backups” as a sufficient answer.
Questions to ask
- How often are files, databases, email, and configuration backed up?
- How many recovery points are retained, and does retention differ between daily, weekly, and monthly copies?
- Are copies stored off-site or on separate infrastructure so a server failure or compromise cannot destroy both production and backup?
- Are backups encrypted in transit and at rest, and who can access the keys?
- Can you restore a single database, file set, or staging copy without overwriting production?
- What is the expected recovery time and recovery-point objective for your plan?
- When was the last restore test, and can the host provide a report or ticket showing that restores are exercised?
Before switching, perform a test restore into an isolated location. Confirm that uploads, environment files, database credentials, scheduled tasks, and permissions are present. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Which hosting resources matter for PHP performance?
Compare enforceable limits, not headline storage. A site with modest disk usage can still fail when it reaches CPU, memory, worker, process, database, or inode limits.
| Resource or service | What to verify | Why it affects PHP |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and RAM | Dedicated or shared allocation, throttling rules, and burst duration | Determines how quickly requests and background jobs complete |
| PHP workers and processes | Worker count, process limits, queue behavior, and per-account caps | Too few workers cause requests to wait; excessive concurrency can trigger failures |
| Memory and execution limits | memory_limit, max execution time, upload and POST limits |
Controls imports, media processing, updates, and API requests |
| Storage and inodes | Capacity, inode quota, SSD/NVMe policy, and growth alerts | Many small files can exhaust an inode quota before disk space is full |
| Database | Engine and version, connection limits, storage, backups, and remote access policy | Database contention often limits dynamic sites before file storage does |
| Caching | OPcache, page cache, object cache, and purge controls | Reduces repeated PHP execution and database work |
| Geography | Available regions, data-residency terms, and network path to users | Latency and legal requirements vary by audience and data |
Ask how limits are measured and what happens when they are exceeded. A provider may throttle, return errors, queue work, or suspend an account. Request historical usage graphs or a trial period that lets you observe real traffic.
How should I compare PHP hosts?
Use one scorecard for every candidate and weight lifecycle and security more heavily than promotional storage or a low introductory price.

| Category | Evidence to record | Suggested decision question |
|---|---|---|
| PHP lifecycle | Branches, patch levels, end dates, removal policy | Can the site move to PHP 8.4 or 8.5 now, and what is the next planned deadline? |
| Upgrade controls | Staging, compatibility scan, maintenance scheduling, rollback, notifications | Can I test and reverse a change without waiting for support? |
| Compatibility | Extensions, database versions, web server, cron, queues, deployment access | Does every documented application dependency exist on this plan? |
| HTTPS and isolation | Automatic certificates, user identities, worker isolation, tenant boundaries | How are my files and PHP processes separated from other accounts? |
| Patch response | Critical-update target, ownership, advisories, emergency controls | Who patches each layer, and how will I know it happened? |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, separation, encryption, restore testing | Can I restore a known-good site quickly and independently? |
| Operations | CPU/RAM, workers, database, geography, support hours, migration help | Will limits and support match my traffic and team? |
| Price | Introductory term, renewal price, overages, migration fees, taxes | What will this exact configuration cost after the first term? |
Mark an item “not stated” when the provider will not give a direct answer. Unstated lifecycle, isolation, or restore information is a risk signal, not a neutral score.
How do I switch a PHP site to a new host safely?
Plan the move as a controlled migration, not a DNS change followed by hope. Keep the old host available until the new site has passed functional and recovery checks.
- Inventory the current system. Record PHP and patch versions for web and command-line use, extensions, database version, cron entries, worker processes, environment variables, DNS records, TLS certificates, storage usage, and scheduled integrations.
- Confirm the target. Obtain written answers about the PHP branch, patch level, extensions, database, limits, HTTPS, isolation, backups, and support contacts.
- Build a staging copy. Transfer files and a sanitized database, set the target PHP runtime, block indexing, and configure credentials and callbacks for the test environment.
- Test the application. Exercise login, administration, forms, uploads, email, payments, APIs, search, imports, cron, queues, cache purges, and command-line tasks. Review PHP and web-server logs for warnings and fatal errors.
- Lower DNS time to live. Do this before the final cutover so a mistake does not leave users directed to the old server for an extended period.
- Synchronize and cut over. Freeze writes if necessary, take a final database backup, copy changed files and data, switch DNS, and verify HTTPS and the canonical domain.
- Monitor and retain rollback. Watch error rates, latency, worker usage, database connections, mail delivery, and business transactions. Keep the old host and its backups until the agreed rollback window has passed.
What warning signs should make me reject a host?
- The sales page says only “PHP supported” and will not identify branches or patch levels.
- PHP versions differ between the control panel, web runtime, and command line without documentation.
- There is no staging option, compatibility guidance, maintenance notice, or rollback method.
- Required extensions or database versions are available only after an expensive or unclear upgrade.
- HTTPS renewal, account isolation, or critical-patch ownership is not explained.
- Backups have no retention policy, separate storage, encryption details, or restore-test evidence.
- Resource limits are hidden, measured ambiguously, or enforced through unexplained suspensions.
- The advertised introductory price omits renewal rates, overages, migration charges, or regional restrictions.
Is PHP 8.4 or 8.5 better for hosting?
Use PHP 8.5 for a new deployment if your framework, plugins, extensions, and host support it; choose PHP 8.4 when it offers the compatibility or operational stability your application needs. Both are active-support targets at the current date, while PHP 8.3 is already security-only. The right choice is the newest branch that your complete tested stack supports, not simply the highest number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor an existing site on PHP 8.2, begin compatibility work before 31 December 2026. If the application cannot move immediately, use a supported interim branch only as a documented bridge and set an owner and deadline for the permanent upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a hosting account use different PHP versions for different sites?
Many hosting platforms expose per-site runtime selection, but availability is plan- and server-specific. Ask the provider to confirm whether each domain, subdomain, cron job, and command-line task can use its own branch, and whether changing one site affects the others.
How often should I recheck my host’s PHP support matrix?
Review it at least before every major application update and whenever PHP publishes a new branch or security advisory. Put branch end dates and the host’s planned removal date on your maintenance calendar so an upgrade is not triggered by an emergency.
What should I do if a plugin or framework blocks the newest PHP branch?
Freeze the dependency versions, document the incompatibility, and ask its maintainer for a supported release or migration path. Keep the site on a still-supported PHP branch while you test the fix; do not treat an unsupported runtime as a permanent workaround.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs shared PHP hosting automatically unsafe?
Shared hosting can be appropriate when accounts have separate operating-system identities, isolated PHP workers, current patches, and reliable backups. The risk depends on the provider’s isolation and operations, so request those controls instead of judging the service solely by the word “shared”.
