Yes. A phono cartridge can contribute to turntable hum when its pins, headshell leads or internal metal shield do not make a sound ground connection. Hum that grows when your hand approaches the headshell is a particularly useful clue. However, the cartridge is only one possible source: an incorrectly connected earth wire, damaged RCA cable, ground loop, nearby transformer or AC lead can create the same 50/60 Hz noise. Start with contact, grounding and cable checks before buying a replacement cartridge. The sequence below isolates the fault without guessing and explains when a cartridge replacement is justified.

How can a phono cartridge create hum?

A cartridge converts the stylus movement into a very small electrical signal. Its four signal pins connect to the tonearm’s color-coded lead clips, and the tonearm wiring continues through the phono interconnect to the phono stage. Because the signal is so low, a loose or oxidized contact can leave the return path unstable and allow mains-frequency noise into the audio.

Shielding is another cartridge-side issue. The cartridge body or a metal shield is intended to be at the correct reference potential. Klipsch’s troubleshooting procedure says that if hum increases when a hand is brought near the cartridge headshell, the cartridge’s metal shield may not be grounded through its connections. That behavior is evidence of a shielding or contact problem, not proof that the cartridge generator itself has failed.

Ortofon advises checking the cartridge pins and tonearm connectors because dust, oxidation or a loose fit can interrupt the electrical contact. Reseating those connections is therefore a better first test than immediately installing a new cartridge.

What symptoms point to the cartridge instead of another hum source?

Hum behavior changes as you isolate parts of the system. Use the clues in this table to decide which branch to test next.

What you observe Most useful interpretation Next check
Hum becomes louder when a hand approaches or touches the headshell The cartridge shield or one of the headshell connections may not be grounded correctly. Power down, inspect and reseat the cartridge pins and lead clips.
Hum changes when the phono plugs are unplugged and reconnected An RCA plug, socket or cable shield may have an intermittent or poor connection. Reseat both plugs and substitute a known-good interconnect later in the process.
Hum stops when the turntable is disconnected from the phono input The noise is entering through the turntable, its earth connection, its cable or the cartridge path. Test the earth lead, routing and cartridge contacts one at a time.
Hum remains with the turntable disconnected The cartridge cannot be the source of that remaining noise; look downstream at the amplifier, phono input, powered speakers or another connected device. Reconnect devices individually to find the connection that reintroduces hum.
Hum changes when the turntable is moved away from a transformer, motor, AC lead or fluorescent light Electromagnetic interference is being picked up by the cartridge or phono wiring. Reposition the turntable and route interconnects away from those sources.

No cited source establishes a reliable percentage of hum cases caused by cartridges. Treat the clues as a troubleshooting method, not as a statistical diagnosis.

How do I test a cartridge for hum safely?

Use this order so that each test changes only one variable. Keep the amplifier volume low whenever you connect, disconnect or move phono wiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check whether the noise is in the turntable path. Lower the amplifier volume, stop the platter and disconnect the turntable’s phono plugs from the phono input. If the hum is still present, the cartridge is not causing that remaining noise. If it disappears, continue with the turntable checks.
  2. Power down before touching the cartridge wiring. Switch off the amplifier and turntable. Remove the headshell if your tonearm design permits it, or work with the cartridge accessible without putting force on the cantilever.
  3. Inspect and reseat the cartridge connections. Look for a lead clip that has slipped off a pin, a pin that is pushed back, visible oxidation or a connector that fits loosely. Reconnect each lead firmly to the correct pin. Ortofon recommends checking and cleaning cartridge pins and tonearm connectors; use only a contact-cleaning method approved for your hardware and do not bend the clips or touch the stylus.
  4. Reconnect the RCA plugs. Check that left and right plugs are fully inserted and that the cable is not under tension. Disconnect and reconnect each plug once to wipe the contact surfaces. A damaged shield can pass the music signal while still admitting hum, so visual inspection alone is not conclusive.
  5. Verify the earth lead. Attach the turntable’s earth wire to the dedicated ground terminal specified by the turntable and phono-stage or amplifier manufacturer. Tighten the terminal enough to hold the wire securely, but do not connect it to an arbitrary screw, mains neutral or a safety-earth point unless the equipment instructions explicitly require that arrangement.
  6. Remove interference sources. With the system powered down, move the turntable and phono cables away from AC cords, power transformers, motors and fluorescent lights. Power up at low volume and compare the hum before and after the move.
  7. Break possible ground loops. Temporarily disconnect a computer, powered speaker, subwoofer or other accessory from the audio system, then reconnect one item at a time. If the hum returns when a particular device is added, its connection is creating a second ground path or carrying loop current through an unbalanced cable shield.
  8. Substitute parts only after those checks. Try a known-good phono cable, then a known-good compatible cartridge if available. If the hum follows the original cartridge while the replacement remains quiet in the same setup, the original cartridge or its shield connection is the likely fault.

Why does the turntable earth wire matter?

The earth lead gives the turntable’s metalwork and signal reference a defined relationship to the phono stage. Technics lists an incorrectly connected earth lead as a common cause of turntable hum. The correct terminal is equipment-specific, so follow the markings and manual for your turntable and phono stage rather than assuming every model uses the same topology.

Ground loops occur when two devices are connected to ground through different paths. Cambridge Audio explains that the resulting potential difference can drive 50/60 Hz current through the audio connection; using a single-point ground or removing the extra path can eliminate the noise. In a typical system, the turntable earth wire, RCA shields and the protective earths of powered equipment can all become part of that loop.

Sound Devices notes that an unbalanced cable shield may carry both the signal return and unwanted ground-loop current. That is why adding a computer, powered monitor or another grounded component can make a previously quiet turntable hum. Disconnecting one accessory at a time identifies the extra path without requiring a cartridge change.

Can cable routing or nearby equipment make a good cartridge hum?

Yes. Phono signals are particularly vulnerable to magnetic and electric fields because they are much weaker than line-level audio. Klipsch recommends checking phono-plug connections and separating the turntable from equipment that contains transformers or motors. Technics likewise advises keeping AC leads, fluorescent lights and strong magnetic-field sources away from turntable cables.

Route the phono interconnects as far as practical from power cords, wall-wart transformers, amplifier power supplies and motor housings. Avoid coiling excess phono cable beside a power brick. Move the turntable itself, not just the cable, because a cartridge can pick up a nearby field through the headshell and tonearm. If moving the setup changes the pitch or level of the hum, interference is a stronger explanation than an internally defective cartridge.

When should I replace the phono cartridge?

Replace the cartridge only when the fault follows it in a controlled substitution test or when inspection reveals damage that cannot be corrected. A new cartridge will not cure a missing earth connection, a broken RCA shield, a ground loop or magnetic interference; those faults will simply affect the replacement as well.

Before ordering a replacement, confirm all of the following:

  • Mount: The cartridge’s mounting style must fit the headshell or tonearm, and the mounting hardware must allow correct alignment.
  • Output type: Verify whether the cartridge is moving-magnet (MM) or moving-coil (MC), then check that the phono stage supports that output.
  • Loading: Confirm the phono stage’s resistance and capacitance options are suitable for the cartridge specification.
  • Tonearm compatibility: Check the cartridge’s mass and compliance against the tonearm’s usable range.
  • Lead and pin condition: Make sure the replacement includes or accepts the correct clips and that no tonearm wiring is damaged.

After installation, align the cartridge and set tracking force and anti-skate according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Incorrect setup can cause distortion and channel imbalance, but it is not a substitute explanation for a hum that was already present with the original cartridge.

How do I distinguish a cartridge fault from a ground-loop fault?

Use isolation rather than intuition. A cartridge-related fault remains tied to the turntable and usually changes when you touch the headshell, reseat its leads or substitute the cartridge. A ground-loop fault appears or disappears when another grounded device is connected, even though the cartridge and turntable remain untouched.

Make a simple connection map: turntable earth wire, left and right RCA plugs, phono stage, amplifier, powered speakers, subwoofer, computer and any USB or recording interface. Disconnect one link, listen briefly at low volume, and restore it before testing the next. Do not remove protective safety earths from mains equipment; solve the loop at the signal-connection level or have a qualified technician inspect an unsafe installation.

What should I do if the hum is only present at high volume?

A small residual noise floor can become audible when the amplifier is turned up, especially with high-gain phono settings. First repeat the isolation sequence at a normal listening level so that you do not mistake the system’s baseline noise for a new cartridge defect. If the hum rises sharply when the headshell is approached, prioritize cartridge shielding and contact checks; if it rises when another powered device is connected, prioritize the ground-loop branch.

Keep a note of each change and its result. Returning every connection to its original state after each test prevents two simultaneous changes from masking the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a bad stylus cause the same hum as a bad cartridge?

A worn stylus usually causes tracking problems, distortion or channel imbalance rather than mains-frequency hum. Hum points first to the cartridge’s electrical contacts, shielding, tonearm wiring, earth connection or external interference, so changing only the stylus is unlikely to solve it.

Why does touching the headshell sometimes reduce hum instead of increasing it?

Your body can add capacitance and provide an alternate reference path, so the noise may change in either direction when you touch the headshell. The change itself indicates that the cartridge or headshell shielding is sensitive to its electrical reference; inspect the intended connections rather than relying on your body as a ground.

What if the hum remains after I disconnect the turntable?

That result rules out the cartridge as the source of the remaining noise. Check the amplifier or phono input with no source connected, then reconnect powered speakers, subwoofers, computers and other equipment individually to identify the device or cable that brings the hum back.

Is it safe to connect the turntable earth wire to any nearby metal screw?

No. Use the dedicated ground terminal specified for the turntable and phono stage or amplifier. An improvised connection can leave the system noisy or create an unsafe mains-earth arrangement; consult the equipment manual or a qualified technician when the correct terminal is unclear.
