For smoother combat on PC, start with the Medium or High preset, enable the upscaler that matches your GPU (DLSS for GeForce, FSR for Radeon, or XeSS for Intel), and choose Balanced. Use Quality at 1080p when your GPU has headroom. Turn ray tracing and path tracing off for the baseline, cap the frame rate to your display refresh rate, and disable High-Quality Hair. If frames are still low, reduce shadows, lighting, effects, materials, view distance, and environment detail before lowering character textures, reflections, or ambient occlusion.
This approach preserves the settings that most affect character clarity while targeting steadier frame pacing. The official 1440p/60 FPS recommendation assumes upscaling on hardware around an RTX 3060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT; it is not a promise of native-resolution performance.
What are the best Phantom Blade Zero settings for smoother PC performance?
Use the following profile as a starting point, then adjust one setting at a time against your target resolution and frame rate. It is designed for rasterized rendering, with ray tracing and path tracing disabled.
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | Recommended starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quality preset | Medium or High | Provides a sensible baseline before custom tuning. |
| Super Resolution | DLSS (GeForce), FSR (Radeon), or XeSS (Intel) | Use the upscaler designed for your GPU vendor. |
| Upscaler mode | Balanced; Quality at 1080p if there is headroom | Balances internal resolution and frame rate. |
| Frame Generation | Off initially | Stabilize the non-generated frame rate first. |
| Frame cap | Match monitor refresh rate, or 60 FPS for a 60-Hz display | Improves frame pacing instead of rendering unnecessary frames. |
| Ray Tracing Quality | Off | Leaves performance for combat and traversal. |
| Shadow Quality | Very High | Wccftech retained this in its optimized 1440p profile. |
| Reflection Quality | Ultra | Lowering it generally costs more image quality than it saves in performance. |
| Lighting Quality | High | A useful performance lever with a moderate visual trade-off. |
| Effects Quality | High | Reduces the cost of combat effects without flattening the scene. |
| Material Quality | High | Can be reduced before character detail. |
| Ambient Occlusion Quality | Ultra | Wccftech found smaller gains from lowering it. |
| View Distance | High | Reduces distant-scene workload while preserving nearby detail. |
| Character Texture Quality | Ultra | Keep character surfaces sharp when VRAM allows. |
| Character Model Quality | Ultra | Preserves the detail most visible during combat. |
| High-Quality Hair | Off | Wccftech measured a 19% performance penalty for this option. |
| Environment Texture Quality | Ultra with 8 GB or more VRAM at 1440p without RT; lower if VRAM is constrained or RT/PT is enabled | Texture memory demand rises with resolution and advanced lighting. |
| Environment Model Quality | Ultra | Retained in Wccftech’s optimized profile. |
| Environment Detail Quality | Medium | One of the better performance-per-visual-cost reductions. |
| Motion Blur | Off, or Low/Medium by preference | Disabling it can make frame-generation artifacts less visible. |
The exact result depends on your CPU, GPU, VRAM, driver, resolution and target frame rate. Treat these values as a tuning order, not a guarantee for every system.

Which upscaler and mode should you use?
Choose DLSS on a GeForce GPU, FSR on a Radeon GPU, and XeSS on an Intel GPU. The game also offers TSR, which is useful when you prefer a non-vendor-specific temporal reconstruction method.
Quality, Balanced, Performance or Ultra Performance?
Quality renders at a higher internal resolution and is the first choice when your GPU already approaches its target frame rate. Balanced is the practical default for 1440p. Performance lowers internal resolution further for a larger frame-rate gain, while Ultra Performance is a last resort for very demanding resolutions. DLAA renders at native resolution and favors image quality over speed.
At 1080p, begin with Quality if the image remains stable and you have performance headroom; at 1440p, begin with Balanced. If you must use Performance, check fine geometry, hair and distant foliage for shimmer before changing other settings. AMD and Intel users can also choose an internal-resolution percentage, allowing a more gradual compromise than the named presets.
Should ray tracing or path tracing be enabled?
Leave both options off when your priority is smooth combat. Ray tracing improves reflections and shadows, while path tracing adds expensive indirect lighting, reflections, shadows and water caustics. Independent testing found path tracing extremely demanding even with upscaling.
S-Game’s 2026 hardware targets list an RTX 5060 for 1080p/60 FPS with ray tracing and an RTX 5080 for 2160p/60 FPS with path tracing. Those are official targets, not universal guarantees, and they assume the game’s specified settings and upscaling. Path tracing is therefore a specialist mode for high-end GeForce RTX hardware rather than the normal starting point.
On GeForce RTX GPUs, enabling path tracing automatically activates DLSS Ray Reconstruction, according to NVIDIA’s 2026 launch material. That can improve reconstructed lighting detail, but it does not remove the substantial rendering cost. The game requires returning to the main menu to switch ray-tracing or path-tracing modes, so decide which mode you are evaluating before loading a demanding area.
What should you lower first for more FPS?
Lower settings in this order: High-Quality Hair, shadows, lighting, effects, materials, view distance and Environment Detail. These options delivered the strongest performance gains relative to their visual cost in Wccftech’s optimized 2560×1440 comparison.

High-Quality Hair
Disable it early. Wccftech measured an approximately 19% performance penalty and found that the setting affected gameplay, despite its in-game description emphasizing cinematic scenes.
Shadows, lighting and effects
Move Shadow Quality from Very High to High, then reduce Lighting and Effects one step if necessary. These changes reduce the cost of dynamic lights, shadow maps and combat particles while leaving character textures intact.
Materials, distance and environment detail
Reduce Material Quality, View Distance and Environment Detail before touching character models. Environment Detail at Medium is a useful compromise in busy areas. Keep Environment Model Quality high unless the GPU remains overloaded after the other changes.
Settings to preserve longer
Wccftech’s optimized profile kept Ultra Reflection Quality, Ambient Occlusion Quality, Character Texture Quality, Character Model Quality and Environment Model Quality. Lower these only after the earlier levers fail, or when VRAM usage causes texture streaming problems.
How much performance can an optimized profile add?
Wccftech compared Ultra with an optimized rasterized profile at 2560×1440, using native TSR and disabling ray tracing and path tracing. Ultra averaged 74 FPS, with 63 FPS 1% lows and 62 FPS 0.1% lows. The optimized profile averaged 103 FPS, with 87 FPS 1% lows and 83 FPS 0.1% lows.
| Metric | Ultra | Optimized profile | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | 74 | 103 | 39% higher |
| 1% low | 63 | 87 | 38% higher |
| 0.1% low | 62 | 83 | 34% higher |
These are Wccftech’s measurements on its test system and scene, not a guaranteed result for your hardware. The important lesson is that the profile improved lows as well as average FPS while retaining several Ultra-quality options.
How should you configure frame generation?
Frame generation can make motion look smoother after the game already delivers a stable base frame rate. It should not be used to disguise a CPU- or GPU-limited frame rate, because generated frames do not reduce the input latency of the underlying rendered frames.

What hardware does Phantom Blade Zero require?
S-Game’s official 2026 requirements specify 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, DirectX 12, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. The listed targets are as follows:
| Target | Processor | Graphics card | Upscaling / feature assumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p/30 FPS | Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | GeForce GTX 1660 6GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB | Upscaling |
| 1440p/60 FPS | Intel Core i5-10600K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB or Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB | Upscaling |
| 1080p/60 FPS with ray tracing | Not stated in the listed target | GeForce RTX 5060 | Ray tracing |
| 2160p/60 FPS with path tracing | Not stated in the listed target | GeForce RTX 5080 | Path tracing |
These are S-Game’s official targets rather than guarantees. The SSD requirement is intended for installation and asset streaming; changing storage alone should not be treated as an FPS upgrade.
How do you target 1080p, 1440p or 4K?
1080p at 60 FPS
Use High or Medium, DLSS/FSR/XeSS Quality, and a 60 FPS cap on a 60-Hz display. If the GPU has headroom, Quality preserves detail; if not, switch to Balanced before making broad Low-setting changes. Keep RT/PT off unless you specifically have an RTX 5060-class card and accept the additional load.
1440p at 60 FPS
Use the recommended profile with Balanced upscaling, RT/PT off and High-Quality Hair disabled. The official 1440p target assumes an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT class GPU with upscaling. Preserve character textures and models while reducing shadows, lighting, effects and environment detail when lows fall below 60.

Expect to rely on Performance or a carefully chosen internal-resolution percentage, especially outside high-end hardware. Path tracing is a separate enthusiast target: S-Game names an RTX 5080 for 2160p/60 FPS with path tracing, but the mode remains substantially more demanding than rasterized rendering.
How can you reduce stutter and uneven frame pacing?
Phantom Blade Zero has no built-in benchmark tool, so use the same demanding area and repeatable camera movement when comparing settings. DSOGaming used the demanding starting area for this reason.

- Allow the first-launch shader compilation to finish. DSOGaming reported a lengthy initial compilation phase.
- Do not judge traversal or combat smoothness while compilation is still running.
- Set a frame cap at or below the monitor refresh rate; this limits spikes and keeps pacing consistent.
- Use VRR (such as G-Sync or a similar display feature) if available, while keeping the cap below the panel’s maximum refresh rate.
- If stutter appears after enabling RT or PT, return to the main menu, disable the mode and reload the area; the game does not switch these modes in-place.
- Reduce Environment Detail, View Distance and Effects if the hitch occurs in dense scenes, and reduce textures only when VRAM is saturated.
DSOGaming reported no major shader-compilation or traversal stutters after its initial compilation, while Wccftech separately reported an approximately eight-minute PSO compilation step on a high-end Core i7-14700K system. Compilation time varies with hardware and method, so do not treat either duration as a universal value.
How do you tell whether the CPU, GPU or VRAM is limiting performance?
First test with the same scene, resolution, upscaler and frame cap. If GPU utilization stays near its limit and lowering resolution or switching from Quality to Balanced raises FPS, the graphics workload is the constraint. If GPU utilization is well below its limit while one or more CPU threads are busy, reducing view distance, environment detail and effects can help more than lowering textures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
VRAM pressure shows up as texture-streaming problems, sudden hitching or visibly delayed texture detail. In that case, lower Environment Texture Quality before Character Texture Quality, and keep RT and PT disabled while diagnosing it. The recommended profile assumes at least 8 GB of VRAM for Ultra environment textures at 1440p without advanced lighting; RT/PT can require more headroom.
What is a reliable settings-testing routine?
- Write down the target resolution, display refresh rate and desired cap.
- Finish first-launch shader or PSO compilation before recording results.
- Choose the vendor-matched upscaler and start at Quality or Balanced.
- Run the same demanding starting area and repeat the same camera movement for each change.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows and 0.1% lows separately; note whether the number is native or frame-generated.
- Change one setting at a time, beginning with High-Quality Hair, shadows, lighting, effects, materials, view distance and environment detail.
- Stop when the lows hold your target; further reductions may make the image worse without improving perceived smoothness.
This process is more useful than comparing screenshots from unrelated scenes. A high average can hide combat dips, while a modest cap with stronger 1% lows usually feels steadier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not judge performance from generated FPS alone; check the base frame rate and input response.
- Do not enable RT or PT while troubleshooting ordinary raster performance. Establish a stable baseline first.
- Do not drop every option to Low immediately. The optimized profile demonstrates that reflections, ambient occlusion, character detail and environment models can remain high.
- Do not change RT/PT in the middle of a loaded scene; return to the main menu as required.
- Do not assume an SSD, extra RAM or a high-refresh monitor creates more rendered FPS. Those components support loading, capacity or presentation, while the graphics workload still determines frame rate.
Which settings matter most for frame pacing, not just average FPS?
Watch 1% and 0.1% lows as well as the average. A profile that reports 100 FPS but drops sharply during effects-heavy attacks can feel worse than one holding 75 FPS consistently. High-Quality Hair, shadows, lighting and effects are especially important because they can raise the cost of individual scenes; a frame cap prevents the GPU from oscillating between very high and very low output.
When comparing profiles, record resolution, upscaler mode, RT/PT state, VRAM capacity and the same scene. Generated FPS should be listed separately from base FPS so that frame-pacing and latency decisions remain clear.
How we picked these settings
The profile follows S-Game’s official hardware targets, the performance-per-quality priorities identified in Wccftech’s 2560×1440 comparison, and DSOGaming’s observations about shader compilation, frame-generation artifacts and the lack of a built-in benchmark. Settings were prioritized by frame-rate impact, visual cost, VRAM sensitivity and usefulness across 1080p and 1440p systems—not by a claim of in-house testing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Phantom Blade Zero support DLSS, FSR and XeSS at the same time?
The game supports DLSS, FSR, XeSS and TSR as super-resolution options. Select the option appropriate to your GPU, then compare Quality and Balanced at the same resolution; the best-looking mode can vary with fine geometry and motion.
Why does changing ray tracing require returning to the main menu?
Ray-tracing and path-tracing modes are not switched dynamically in the current PC implementation. Change the option from the main menu and reload the scene before evaluating the result.
Can more system RAM fix low FPS in Phantom Blade Zero?
The official requirements list 16 GB of RAM, but they do not claim that adding beyond that raises frame rate. Low FPS is usually governed by GPU workload, CPU limits, resolution, upscaling mode or ray-tracing features.
Should I use native TSR instead of an upscaler?
Native TSR can be useful when you prefer its reconstruction behavior or want to avoid a vendor-specific option, but it generally gives the GPU less relief than Quality or Balanced upscaling. Compare it at the same frame-rate cap and resolution.
Why is my FPS still low after lowering textures?
Textures primarily affect memory use and surface detail. Lower High-Quality Hair, shadows, lighting, effects, materials, view distance and Environment Detail first, then check whether the GPU or CPU is the limiting component.
Is frame generation worth using at 30 FPS?
It is better to improve the non-generated frame rate first. Generated output can look smoother, but it does not remove the input latency of a low base frame rate and may expose ghosting or other artifacts.
How long should shader compilation take?
The duration varies by hardware and compilation method. DSOGaming reported a lengthy first launch, while Wccftech reported about eight minutes for PSO compilation on a Core i7-14700K test system. Let the process finish before judging stutter.
The Bottom Line
For most systems, use a vendor-matched upscaler in Quality or Balanced, disable RT/PT and High-Quality Hair, cap FPS to the display, and lower shadows, lighting, effects, materials, distance and environment detail before sacrificing character quality. Tune against 1% lows in a repeatable scene, then add frame generation only after the base rate is stable.
