Choose Phantom Blade Zero for fast wuxia combos, frequent weapon changes, interconnected exploration, and forgiving checkpoints. Choose Onimusha: Way of the Sword for deliberate one-katana fencing, precise Issen counters, and Japanese folklore horror. Their parries and boss fights look similar in clips, but the design goals are opposite: Phantom Blade Zero makes your loadout part of the combo system, while Onimusha asks you to master one sword and read every opening.
Neither studio calls its game a Soulslike. Phantom Blade Zero launched digitally on PS5 and PC on October 28 in the US (October 29 worldwide), while Onimusha released September 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The comparison below focuses on swordplay, progression, difficulty, death rules, price, and the practical reasons to choose one over the other.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phantom Blade Zero | Wuxia spectacle, combo variety, and loadout experimentation | 30+ main weapons, 25 Phantom Edges, four difficulty modes | Standard $59.99; Digital Deluxe $69.99 (US launch) | PS5; PC (Steam, Epic Games Store) | Oct 2026 |
| Onimusha: Way of the Sword | Focused katana duels, Issen timing, and folklore-horror atmosphere | One katana, Oni Armaments, Story/Action modes, Carnage post-game mode | Standard $69.99; PS5 Steelbook listed around $74.99 (US) | PS5; Xbox Series X|S; PC | Oct 2026 |
Which game has better swordplay?
There is no single winner because the games reward different skills. Phantom Blade Zero is a character-action and action-RPG hybrid built around flow, cancels, and swapping equipment. Onimusha is a concentrated fencing game: blocks, deflects, endurance management, and a perfectly timed Issen matter more than a large moveset.

You carry two main weapons and two Phantom Edges, then switch among them inside a fight. S-GAME and the PlayStation Blog describe an arsenal of more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges. Each weapon has a limited basic string, a distinct mechanic, and an upgrade path that can add one or two new actions.

Most normal attacks can be cancelled into a block or parry, so you are not locked into every animation. That makes the combat feel closer to a choreographed wuxia exchange than to stamina-attrition combat. A weapon swap also recharges Sha-Chi, giving you a reason to change tools instead of repeating one optimal string.
Sha-Chi is the central resource. Light attacks and perfect dodges build it; heavy attacks and abilities consume it; ordinary blocking drains it. A perfectly timed deflect does not drain Sha-Chi. The result is a rhythm in which evasive precision funds your strongest attacks, while panic-blocking can leave you unable to use them.
Attack telegraphs use two important signals. A blue flash marks an attack that can be parried if your timing is correct. A red flash cannot be blocked or deflected and requires a precise dodge. A successful defense can trigger Ghoststep, which relocates Soul behind the enemy and converts a defensive moment into an offensive opening.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Weapons are not cosmetic swaps. PC Gamer’s example, the Outlaw Warblade, initially drains enemy health and converts Soul’s health into recoverable damage for guard breaks. Upgrades add a charged healing hit and, later, an emergency shield while the weapon continues to sap health. This kind of risk-and-reward identity is why the game’s variety is more than a list of skins.
The combat director Qianli Ma described the goal clearly: beating the game in a merely adequate way is achievable, while making every exchange look beautiful is the difficult part. That distinction explains why Phantom Blade Zero can feel accessible at the entry level but demanding when you chase perfect cancels, Ghoststeps, and stylish boss punishments.
Onimusha: one katana as a complete discipline
Onimusha gives you a katana for the campaign rather than a museum of interchangeable melee classes. PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon wrote that he began and ended the game with a sword, and praised the physicality of its blocks, deflects, parries, and Issen strikes.
Issen is the signature counter: attack immediately before an incoming hit lands. The timing window is narrow, but a successful Issen produces the series’ distinctive lightning-fast execution. You can also perform a Break Issen by holding guard and pressing attack just before impact after draining an enemy’s endurance, creating a larger punish window.

You can mash through some crowds, but the efficient method is to block and parry until the stamina bar is depleted, then use a decisive slash. CNET’s David Lumb found the late-game Issen timing extremely tight and reported performing it mostly by accident, while still finding that careful timing was often required.

The Oni Gauntlet serves several functions: it revives Musashi in the story, absorbs souls, and enables supernatural attacks. Oni Armaments add elemental or special techniques around the sword, while Reflex Dodge gives you another answer to attacks that should not be met with a guard.
Combat contrast
| Combat axis | Phantom Blade Zero | Onimusha: Way of the Sword |
|---|---|---|
| Core feel | Fast wuxia chains with interruptible animations and weapon swaps | Slower, weightier katana exchanges centered on Issen |
| Defense | Blue attacks are parryable; red attacks require dodging; Ghoststep can reposition you | Block, parry, deflect, Break Issen, and dodge-only responses |
| Main resource | Sha-Chi builds through lights and perfect dodges; blocking drains it | Enemy endurance enables Break Issen; souls power health, upgrades, and Oni Armaments |
| Best skill expression | Maintaining flow while changing weapons and spending Sha-Chi efficiently | Reading tells and landing a risky Issen at the exact impact moment |
How does progression differ?
Phantom Blade Zero treats the arsenal as your build. Onimusha treats mastery of Musashi, the Oni Gauntlet, and Issen as the build. One continually broadens your options; the other deepens a single combat identity.
Phantom Blade Zero: weapons, accessories, and exploration rewards
There is no XP or soul currency to drop when you die. You become stronger through weapons, accessories, upgrades, and exploration items. Reforging returns invested materials, so trying a different weapon does not permanently strand your resources.

Bells function as checkpoints, map-reveal points, rest stations, fast-travel locations, and access points to a skill tree. Health flowers are scattered through areas; PC Gamer found roughly three to six in an area, and collecting them all provides about 10% more health. Each flower also includes a short dialogue scene, making the upgrade an exploration reward rather than a simple pickup.
S-GAME describes eight hand-painted maps that connect into one world. The structure is more interconnected than a mission list, but early sections can feel linear: gates open when you obtain particular weapons, and there is no compass waypoint for quests. Defeated regular enemies generally stay dead after resting at a bell, although they can return if you leave a zone entirely.
Bosses are tied closely to the arsenal. Soulframe Liang said there are at least 50 bosses because the game has roughly as many bosses as weapons. That does not mean every weapon is mandatory, but it signals a progression loop in which new equipment and boss encounters continually feed each other.
The protagonist’s 66-day lifespan is a story premise, not a real-time countdown on a normal playthrough. The campaign has eight endings and late optional areas connected to a Perfect Ending, giving exploration and repeat runs a purpose beyond stat increases.
Onimusha: souls, gauntlet powers, and Issen investment
Onimusha’s progression is narrower but more deliberate. Musashi keeps the katana while expanding the Oni Gauntlet, collecting souls from Genma, unlocking Oni Armaments, and investing in a skill tree that includes Issen-related abilities.

Coverage of the demo and early game describes three soul colors: yellow for health, red for upgrades, and blue for the Oni Armament special. Those color functions come from review and demo reporting rather than a complete Capcom economy specification, so individual late-game costs may differ.
Spirit Mirrors are the game’s rest and teleport points. CNET reported that most basic enemies reappear whenever you save at one, creating a deliberate risk-reward loop: resting restores your position and resources but repopulates the route. That is the opposite of Phantom Blade Zero’s default rule that defeated regular enemies remain gone.
The world is an early-Edo Kyoto hub connected to temples, fortresses, and other mission zones. It is larger than the demo but not open-world. The story follows a young Miyamoto Musashi revived after a Genma attack, with Shizuka, Takamura, Okuni, and the ghost of Murasaki Shikibu supporting the central conflict.
Which game is harder?
They are difficult in different ways, so a universal winner would be misleading. Phantom Blade Zero asks for reaction speed, Sha-Chi control, weapon familiarity, and increasingly adaptive enemy behavior. Onimusha asks for tighter counter timing, endurance management, and recognition of attacks that must be dodged rather than blocked.
Phantom Blade Zero’s four modes
- Wayfarer: a gentler, story-first path for players who want to explore at their own pace.
- Pathbreaker: the standard setting used in most previews and guides.
- Hellwalker: enemies strike without mercy, adapt to your behavior, punish whiffs, and react to spacing.
- 66 Days: a post-clear challenge unlocked after completing Pathbreaker or Hellwalker. It uses Hellwalker rules and gives you 66 lives; each death consumes one.
S-GAME founder Soulframe Liang said the entry difficulty is easier than an average Souls game, allowing normal players to enjoy the story and exploration without constant combat pressure. Reports still differ on the upper modes: IGN called the default setting hard but fair, while PC Gamer found Hellwalker less severe than Nioh. Fextralife reported that the curve can ease as your equipment knowledge grows.
Death is unusually forgiving for this style of game. You lose no XP or souls, ordinary enemies usually remain defeated, and a boss that has reached its second phase keeps that phase checkpoint when you return. The punishment is learning the encounter, not repeating an entire level or recovering a corpse.
Onimusha’s Story, Action, and Carnage structure
Onimusha launched with Story and Action presets. After demo players said the early slice was too easy, Capcom added more granular settings rather than simply reducing enemy damage. Carnage is a post-game challenge mode.
You can switch difficulty during a run without a penalty. CNET’s review described moving from Action to Story for a later Ganryu fight and then returning to Action. This makes the game practical for players who want demanding duels but do not want one late boss to block the campaign.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The high-end challenge comes from Issen and Break Issen windows, bosses that mix parry-only and dodge-only tells, and the need to manage endurance before a punish. CNET’s criticism of the late game focused more on repeated boss patterns and two-bar encounters than on an impenetrable wall of difficulty.
What the death loops feel like
Phantom Blade Zero uses bells, persistent enemy kills, and phase checkpoints to keep attempts moving forward. Onimusha repopulates most basic enemies when you save at a Spirit Mirror, so returning to a familiar route is part of its resource and practice loop. If you dislike repeating cleared rooms, Phantom Blade Zero is the more forgiving choice; if you enjoy rehearsing a route while refining counters, Onimusha’s loop may feel more purposeful.
Are Phantom Blade Zero or Onimusha Soulslikes?
No, not by their makers’ definitions. Soulframe Liang wrote that Phantom Blade Zero is “neither a Soulslike game nor a traditional action game,” while describing its level design as “Soulslite.” Onimusha director Satoru Nihei has likewise said it is not a punishing die-and-retry game, and Game Informer characterized it as a character-action game through and through.
Both borrow visible ideas associated with modern action RPGs: checkpoints, deliberate enemy tells, boss arenas, and interconnected areas. Their underlying loops differ from a traditional Souls game. Phantom Blade Zero has no corpse-run currency loss, no default enemy refill at every rest, and boss-phase checkpoints. Onimusha has switchable difficulty and a fixed katana identity rather than a build maze based on interchangeable weapons.
Storefront user tags still include “Souls-like” for both games, but those tags describe audience expectations rather than an official genre classification. If you want FromSoftware-style attrition, neither is a direct substitute. If you want demanding timing inside a more structured action game, both can fit, with very different combat priorities.
How much do they cost, and where can you play them?

Phantom Blade Zero is the lower-priced US launch purchase, but it is digital-only at launch. Onimusha costs $10 more for the standard edition and can be bought as a PS5 disc now. The games also arrive at different points in their life cycles: Onimusha is already available with reviews and a demo, while Phantom Blade Zero’s launch-week patches and review consensus may still change during its first weeks.
Which game should you buy?
Choose Phantom Blade Zero if…
- You want fast martial-arts spectacle rather than a single-sword duel simulator.
- You enjoy changing weapons, experimenting with upgrade paths, and using accessories to shape a build.
- You prefer interconnected hand-painted maps, persistent enemy defeats, and boss-phase checkpoints.
- You want difficulty ranging from story-first Wayfarer to the 66-life 66 Days challenge.
- You play on PS5 or PC and are comfortable with a digital purchase at launch.
Its trade-offs are a dense plot that some reviewers found harder to follow, early areas that can feel more gated than expected, and no Xbox release. The game rewards players who want to look stylish, not only those who want to survive.

Choose Onimusha: Way of the Sword if…
- You want one katana whose timing and physical feedback carry the entire campaign.
- You enjoy the tension of reading an enemy, draining endurance, and risking an Issen.
- You prefer Japanese folklore horror, early-Edo Kyoto, and a more direct personal story.
- You want to change difficulty during a run or pursue Carnage after the campaign.
- You want a physical PS5 or Xbox copy as well as a digital PC version.
Its trade-offs are a smaller weapon vocabulary, Spirit Mirror enemy respawns, and late-game repetition that CNET identified between standout bosses. It is the better fit when the satisfaction comes from mastering one duelist rather than assembling a large arsenal.
Buying both
Buying both makes sense if your budget allows it because their combat loops do not replace one another. Phantom Blade Zero offers weapon-driven wuxia flow and a forgiving death structure; Onimusha offers concentrated katana timing and a replayable counter challenge. They are complementary sword-action games, not two versions of the same Souls formula.
How this comparison was judged
The choices above use the axes that materially change the buying decision: how attacks are defended, whether weapons or timing define progression, what resources are lost on death, how difficulty can be adjusted, the structure of exploration, launch price and format, and platform availability. No controlled head-to-head clear-time study exists, so the article does not assign an overall score or claim that one game is universally harder.

Is Phantom Blade Zero’s 66-day limit a real-time countdown?
No. The 66 days are part of Soul’s story premise and do not impose a real-world timer on a normal campaign. The separate 66 Days difficulty uses 66 lives, with one life consumed whenever you die.
Can I play Onimusha: Way of the Sword without knowing the older games?
Yes. The 2026 game is presented as a standalone story about a young Miyamoto Musashi, his revival by the Oni Gauntlet, and a new Genma conflict. Prior Onimusha knowledge is optional context rather than a prerequisite.
When will a physical Phantom Blade Zero disc be available?
S-GAME has announced PS5 Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate physical editions for 2027. The month, prices, and whether the boxed Deluxe edition matches the digital bonuses have not been announced.
Does Phantom Blade Zero have multiple endings?
Yes. The campaign includes eight endings, with optional late-game areas tied to a Perfect Ending. That structure gives exploration and repeat runs a narrative purpose beyond collecting equipment.
