Yes—you can turn a narrowly described browser task into a personal Safari extension with an AI prompt, provided your Mac is running a Safari and macOS build that includes the new Describe Extension feature. MacMost’s September 15, 2026 tutorial shows the workflow in macOS Golden Gate: describe the behavior from Safari’s address-bar menu, try the generated extension, grant the permissions it requests, and save it for reuse.

The ten examples below are useful starting ideas rather than a product ranking or performance test. They cover page styling, reading progress, inspection, URL privacy, tab navigation, and page-specific notes. You can adapt each prompt to your own sites and decide whether a change should be temporary, reversible, or saved with persistent data.

What can an AI-generated Safari extension actually do?

An AI-generated extension can modify the current page, inspect its content, add a small toolbar or popup, coordinate with Safari tabs, and retain lightweight personal state. The practical limit is how precisely you describe the page element, the action, the controls, and the way to undo the action. A request such as “make links easier to see” is a starting point; a request that specifies underline, bold, uppercase, color controls, and a restore action gives Safari a much clearer implementation target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MacMost’s ten demonstrations are intentionally small. They are best understood as personal utilities that solve one recurring annoyance, not as replacements for a full, distributed browser-extension product. The generated code can still need adjustment, and Safari may ask for page, tab, download, or clipboard permissions depending on what your version does.

How do I create one with Safari’s Describe Extension tool?

In the supported Safari build, start from the address-bar menu and choose the built-in Describe Extension command. Describe the page or browser state, the transformation, any controls or storage you need, and how the user reverses the action.

  1. Open the address-bar menu. Choose Describe Extension. Availability and wording can vary with the installed macOS Golden Gate and Safari build.
  2. Write a specific request. Name the target element (for example, text links or paragraphs), state the visual or functional change, and specify a toggle, restore command, or other undo behavior.
  3. Generate the extension. Safari creates a personal extension from the natural-language description.
  4. Try it on a real page. Check ordinary pages and pages with unusual layouts before deciding that the behavior is reliable.
  5. Grant only the permissions it needs. Page inspection, tab switching, downloads, and clipboard actions can require different access. Read the permission prompt rather than accepting it automatically.
  6. Save the extension. Once the behavior is useful, save it so you can invoke it again from Safari.

A reusable prompt pattern is: target + transformation + controls or persistence + reversal. For example: “On the current page, find every text link; underline, bold, and uppercase it; add a toolbar switch; and restore the original styles when switched off.” For anything that changes content, explicitly request a non-destructive undo path.

Which ten personal Safari extension ideas are worth trying?

1. Highlight every link

The simplest demonstration asks Safari to find text links and make them underlined, bold, and uppercase. It is useful on dense pages where link text blends into body copy, and it illustrates the shortest path from a visual request to a working page transformation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for a toggle that restores the page’s original appearance. Because the extension changes the document’s presentation rather than its content, it is a good first experiment and an easy way to notice sites whose styles override injected rules.

2. Add controls for link highlighting

The more advanced version exposes separate controls for underline, bold, uppercase, and color. You can combine only the cues you need—for example, color plus underline for normal reading, or all four for accessibility testing.

Describe the controls individually and ask for a reset button. This request is more complex because it needs a small interface, state for each option, and CSS that can be applied and removed without leaving partial formatting behind.

3. List page fonts and replace them

This extension inventories the fonts used on the current page, lets you choose replacements, sorts the list by usage, and provides a command to restore the original fonts. It can help diagnose why a page feels difficult to read or preview a more legible typeface without changing the site permanently.

Specify that the list should distinguish fonts actually used by visible text from fonts merely declared in a stylesheet when possible. A replacement may not affect text rendered as an image or canvas, so treat the tool as a page-style aid rather than a universal font converter.

4. Hide paragraphs as you finish reading

Ask Safari to make each paragraph clickable: one click hides it and another click restores it. The result acts like a lightweight reading checklist, letting you collapse material you have already processed while keeping the page available for review.

Request a clear visual affordance—such as a temporary outline or cursor change—so paragraphs do not disappear unexpectedly. If you want the state to survive a reload, say so explicitly; otherwise, a session-only implementation is safer and leaves no lingering page data.

5. Find images, put tiny ones last, and save them

This idea gathers images from the page, orders them by visible area so the smallest appear last, and shows each image’s dimensions. It can also support dragging an image to save it, plus a right-click action to download or copy it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the extension to show the image’s source and to distinguish the rendered dimensions from the file’s intrinsic dimensions. Download and clipboard actions may trigger additional permissions, and the page may contain tracking pixels or images loaded only after scrolling, so define whether the scan should include lazy-loaded content.

6. Inspect elements loaded from other domains

The extension lists page elements requested from domains other than the site you are viewing, then offers a simplified top-level-domain view. That makes it easier to spot groups of services that may include analytics, advertising, embedded media, or other third-party infrastructure.

This is an inspection aid, not proof that a listed domain is a tracker or that a request is harmful. Ask for the original resource URL alongside the grouped domain, and include a refresh action so you can compare the list after dismissing a banner or loading a video.

7. Generate a word cloud from the current page

A word-cloud extension extracts page text, places frequent words near the center, and lays less-common words outward in a spiral. It gives you a quick visual sense of a long article’s vocabulary before you read it closely.

Tell Safari to ignore navigation labels, cookie notices, and other boilerplate if the page structure makes that possible. Also define minimum word length and whether common stop words should be omitted; otherwise, short function words can dominate the result.

8. Copy a URL with tracking arguments removed

This utility copies the current page address after removing tracking parameters, with an option to retain selected parameters such as k= or s=. It is useful when sharing a clean link or saving a citation without advertising campaign data attached.

Ask for a preview of the cleaned URL before copying and for an allow-list of parameters you need to preserve. Removing every unfamiliar argument can break legitimate state, such as a search query, language selection, or document identifier, so the extension should never silently overwrite the address you are viewing.

9. Jump to the next tab on the same site

A toolbar button can cycle through open Safari tabs that share the current domain. It reduces tab hunting when research leaves you with many pages from one site.

Specify whether “same site” means an exact host (for example, docs.example.com) or a registrable domain that includes subdomains. Also define the order—left to right, or next tab after the current one—and what should happen when there is only one matching tab.

10. Leave a note attached to a page

This extension adds and displays a note associated with the current page. Its toolbar icon indicates when a note exists, and a keyboard shortcut can open editing quickly.

Ask for a stable page key, such as the URL without its tracking arguments, and provide explicit edit, save, and delete actions. Decide whether notes are local to the device or synchronized; the demonstration is a lightweight personal note, not a cloud-backed collaboration system.

How do the ten ideas differ in complexity and risk?

The table is a planning guide. Permission needs depend on the implementation Safari generates, and “reversible” means the prompt can request a restore action—not that every site will respond perfectly.

What should I put in an AI prompt for a reliable result?

Describe observable behavior instead of implementation jargon. Include the target, the trigger, the output, edge cases, and a way back.

  • Target: identify links, paragraphs, images, tabs, URL parameters, or page text.
  • Trigger: toolbar button, click, right-click, keyboard shortcut, page load, or explicit refresh.
  • Output: a panel, list, reordered items, visual style, copied text, or selected tab.
  • State: say what survives reloads and what should remain session-only.
  • Undo: request restore, reset, delete, or a non-destructive preview.
  • Boundaries: define exact-host versus subdomain matching, visible versus lazy-loaded images, and which URL parameters may be kept.
On the current page, list visible images with rendered width and height, sort by visible area ascending, and show the source URL. Add a preview panel, a right-click download action, and a refresh button. Do not alter the page. If an image cannot be downloaded, show the reason instead of retrying indefinitely.

Generate a small version first, test it, then ask for one capability at a time. This makes it easier to tell whether a failure comes from the page’s structure, a permission boundary, or an overambitious prompt.

What are the technical limits of this no-code workflow?

The prompt workflow is separate from conventional Safari web-extension development. Apple’s documented route uses JavaScript, HTML, and CSS packaged as a macOS, visionOS, or iOS app extension, typically starting with Xcode’s Safari Extension App template. Choose that route when you need source control, automated tests, signed distribution, App Store delivery, or a precisely reviewed permission model.

Generated extensions can also depend on page-specific DOM structures. A site redesign may move a button, rename a class, or render content inside a shadow tree, causing an otherwise sensible extension to stop working. Treat each saved extension as a personal tool that may need an updated prompt or manual edit after major site or operating-system changes.

A public GitHub project called Safari-Ai-Extension illustrates this hybrid approach: an AI-generated extension was edited by hand to change YouTube presentation, including the country code, logo styling, like/dislike statistics, search placeholder, and a glassmorphism header. Its repository notes that OS 27 behavior was based on developer betas and could change, so do not treat it as a compatibility guarantee.

Other public projects show adjacent AI-assisted Safari use rather than reproducing these ten utilities. eisonAI focuses on structured reading, summaries, and highlights with Apple Intelligence or bring-your-own-key inference. SafariGPT provides an in-Safari popup for questions and summaries through OpenAI. SafarAI extracts webpage content and offers a DeepSeek-powered contextual chatbot through a SwiftUI host app. They demonstrate the breadth of the category, not benchmark results for MacMost’s examples.

How should I test permissions, privacy, and failure cases?

Test on pages you understand before using an extension across sensitive browsing. A page-reading utility may see text you did not intend to expose, while a note extension can retain URLs or personal annotations. Keep stored data local unless you have a clear reason to synchronize it.

  • Run the extension on a simple article, a page with ads or embeds, and a page that loads content after scrolling.
  • Check Safari’s permission prompt and disable access that the feature does not require.
  • Verify that undo, reset, delete, or “keep original URL” actions work before making a change permanent.
  • For URL cleaning, compare the copied result with the original and preserve parameters required for searches or document state.
  • For image and clipboard actions, confirm the destination and avoid downloading material you do not have rights to reuse.
  • After a macOS or Safari update, retest extensions that depend on tab APIs, page structure, or beta operating-system behavior.

MacMost’s tutorial supplies section timestamps for the ten demonstrations—00:53, 03:31, 04:18, 06:22, 07:24, 08:41, 10:07, 11:02, 12:33, and 13:29—but it does not publish controlled benchmarks, success rates, or independent usability measurements. Use the examples as prompts to adapt, not as evidence that every generated extension will work on every site.

Which idea should I build first?

Start with basic link highlighting or paragraph hiding if you are new to the tool: both have a visible result and a straightforward undo action. Move to the font, image, external-element, or word-cloud ideas when you want inspection and analysis. Choose URL cleaning, same-domain tab cycling, or page notes when the value comes from an ongoing research workflow and you are prepared to specify storage and permission details.

Availability is tied to the Safari and macOS build that provides Describe Extension. Check the feature on your installed system before planning a shared workflow, and remember that a personal generated extension is different from a traditionally packaged, signed Safari web extension.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Safari’s AI extension feature work on iPhone or iPad?

The demonstrated Describe Extension workflow is tied to the macOS Golden Gate feature described by MacMost. Apple’s separate web-extension model can package extensions for iOS and other platforms, but the prompt-based availability and interface should be verified on the specific device and OS build.

Can an AI-generated Safari extension be shared with other people?

The examples are framed as personal utilities. Sharing them reliably requires conventional extension packaging, signing, permission review, and compatibility testing rather than simply sending the generated prompt.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a page-note extension sync my notes between Macs?

Not automatically. A prompt must request a synchronization design, and adding sync introduces storage, account, and privacy decisions; the demonstration only establishes a lightweight note tied to a page.

Why did my generated extension stop working after a website redesign?

Many page tools rely on the site’s current document structure. If a redesign changes element names, layout, or rendering methods, revise the prompt or edit the extension to target the new structure, then retest its permissions and undo behavior.
