In summer 2011, a sensible mainstream desktop build could center on Intel’s Sandy Bridge Core i5-2500K and an LGA1155 motherboard. For gaming, a contemporary example paired that processor with 8GB of DDR3 memory and a discrete graphics card for an approximately $744 listed budget. Those parts and prices describe a historical build, not a recommendation for a PC today.
What did a sensible PC build look like in summer 2011?
Intel’s second-generation Core “Sandy Bridge” platform was a mature mainstream option by June 2011. AnandTech’s buyer guide covered processors at several budget levels and motherboards ranging from mini-ITX to extended-ATX. It focused on Intel because AMD’s desktop lineup was approaching a refresh: the guide expected desktop Llano APUs in early July and said high-end Bulldozer models had slipped to September. Those were forecasts made at the time, not current product guidance. AnandTech’s June 17, 2011 buyer guide also noted that LGA2011, the coming high-end successor platform, was not expected until later that year.
For a concrete gaming example, GamersNexus published this parts list on August 6, 2011:

The list is useful as evidence of what one gaming-oriented build looked like, not as a benchmark-based ranking or proof that every part was the best choice. GamersNexus also forecast high-to-ultra graphics for three to four years; that was the publisher’s estimate in 2011, not a verified lifespan result. The available figures do not establish a comparable full performance ranking across alternative builds.

Should a 2011 buyer build then or wait?
The timing question depended partly on workload and tolerance for waiting. AnandTech’s guide treated the Core i5-2500K and Core i7-2600K as capable systems already, while AMD’s desktop refresh was close enough to consider. Jarred Walton, the guide’s author, wrote in that June 2011 context: “It’s a bad idea to buy right before a lineup refresh (as is the case with AMD today), but it’s also unwise to delay building a system to hold out for the next big thing when that’s half a year away and unlikely to be that much better!” That is one author’s period opinion, not a universal rule or present-day advice.
A practical 2011 decision would have weighed how urgently the PC was needed, whether the intended use was gaming or general/productivity work, the budget at the time, and whether waiting for AMD’s announced products mattered more than using an available Sandy Bridge system. The cited sources do not provide comprehensive benchmark comparisons, so they cannot establish a universal winner.

How do I build a PC without a CPU, motherboard, or memory mismatch?
Start with the exact processor and motherboard model, then check the board maker’s CPU-support list and its requirements for BIOS version, chipset, and memory. Socket names are only an initial filter. Intel says desktop i5-2xxx processors use boards based on Intel 6 Series chipsets and support DDR3 memory at 1066 or 1333 MHz. Compatibility can still have exceptions: Intel notes, for example, that an i5-3xxx processor on a 6 Series board may need a BIOS update, ME8 firmware, and drivers. Intel’s Core i5 reference is specific to the processor families it covers; use the support list for the exact board rather than assuming every LGA1155 board supports every CPU.
Do not confuse LGA1155 with LGA1156. Intel states: “Intel® Processors for the LGA1155 and LGA1156 socket types are not compatible between sockets due to electrical, mechanical, and keying differences.” The statement appears in Intel’s Processor Integration Overview for LGA1155/LGA1156, last reviewed October 6, 2020. A processor should not be forced into a socket because it looks close or shares a family name.

- Socket: Match the processor’s socket to the motherboard specification.
- Chipset and BIOS: Confirm the board supports the exact processor and note any BIOS or firmware prerequisites.
- Memory: Verify the supported memory generation and speed; the i5-2xxx guidance above specifies DDR3 at 1066/1333 MHz.
- Physical fit: Check motherboard form factor against the case, plus cooler height and graphics-card clearance.
- Power: Confirm the power supply has the required connectors and capacity for the selected parts.
How to install an LGA1155 processor safely
Intel’s installation directions emphasize careful alignment and handling. Follow the instructions for the specific processor, socket, and cooler; the steps below capture the key LGA1155 precautions. Intel’s installation overview also advises ESD precautions and careful heatsink installation.
- Prepare against static discharge. Take electrostatic-discharge precautions before handling the processor or motherboard.
- Open and inspect the socket. Keep fingers and objects away from the delicate socket contacts.
- Align the processor. Match its connection-1 indicator with the corresponding socket indicator.
- Lower it vertically. Hold the CPU by its edges and lower it straight into place. Do not tilt or slide it across the contacts.
- Install the cooler correctly. Make sure heatsink fasteners seat as intended. Intel’s statement that thermal interface material is pre-applied applies to boxed Intel coolers; it does not describe every third-party cooler.
- Connect the fan. Attach the CPU cooler fan to the motherboard’s CPU fan header before powering on.
What should you compare when considering another period build?
Compare parts against the same historical date and intended workload rather than treating an old parts list as a timeless league table. Useful comparison points are:
