A good PC build starts with what you want the computer to do and the monitor you plan to use—not with a parts list. Set a complete budget, choose components around your workload, then verify socket, memory, power, firmware, and physical fit before ordering. There is no single best PC build: gaming at 4K, competitive play at 1080p, video editing, and everyday office work call for different trade-offs.

Decide what your PC needs to do

Write down the applications, games, and tasks you expect to use, then identify the display target. Resolution and refresh rate both matter: a PC intended for 4K at 60 Hz has different priorities from one aimed at 1440p at a very high refresh rate. Also consider noise, case size, and whether you want to upgrade major components later.

  • Office, school, and everyday use: A modern CPU, adequate memory, and an SSD are the priorities. A discrete graphics card is often unnecessary unless your applications or display setup need one.
  • Gaming: Choose the GPU around your games, resolution, and frame-rate target. CPU importance rises in CPU-heavy games and high-refresh-rate scenarios.
  • Streaming and content creation: Check the requirements of the specific editing, encoding, rendering, or streaming software. CPU cores, GPU features, memory capacity, and storage speed can matter in different proportions.
  • 3D, AI, simulation, and development: Verify the exact application’s supported hardware and memory needs. Gaming benchmarks alone do not establish performance in these workloads.

Set a complete budget

Budget for the whole setup, not just the CPU and graphics card. Include the motherboard, memory, storage, cooler, power supply, case, any extra fans or wireless adapter, operating system, monitor, keyboard, mouse, shipping, and tax. Decide whether the budget covers a Windows license or whether a supported Linux setup fits your applications and games.

Component prices and stock change quickly. Treat a published build total as a dated example, not a lasting price promise. For instance, GamersNexus published a $1,491 midrange build in February 2026 using a Ryzen 5 9600X, GeForce RTX 5070 12 GB, 32 GB DDR5-6000, a B650M motherboard, 2 TB NVMe storage, and a 750 W PSU; its total was specific to that publication and its market conditions (GamersNexus February 2026 build).

Understand the parts in a PC build

Part What it does What to check
CPU Runs general processing and influences platform choice. Application performance, socket, power and cooling needs, integrated graphics, and whether a cooler is included.
CPU cooler Moves heat away from the processor. Socket mounting, CPU workload, case clearance, noise, and included mounting hardware.
Motherboard Connects the CPU, memory, storage, expansion cards, and peripherals. CPU support and BIOS, memory generation, form factor, slots, ports, networking, and headers.
Memory (RAM) Holds data applications are actively using. DDR generation, capacity, kit configuration, supported speeds, and profile stability.
Graphics card (GPU) Renders graphics and accelerates supported workloads. Performance for the intended workload, VRAM, dimensions, power draw, connectors, and software support.
Storage Holds the operating system, applications, games, and files. Capacity, M.2 fit, interface, lane sharing, cooling, endurance, and backup plan.
Power supply (PSU) Supplies power to the system. Model quality, adequate capacity, required connectors, cable compatibility, and case fit.
Case Houses and cools the components. Motherboard form factor, GPU and cooler clearance, radiator support, airflow, and front-panel connections.
Operating system and peripherals Provide the software environment and user controls. Application compatibility, license or installation media, display, keyboard, mouse, and any audio or camera needs.

A discrete GPU is central to many gaming, 3D, and compute builds, but it is not a universal requirement. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may be built into the motherboard or added with an adapter. Cases may include fans, but the included fan count and arrangement do not guarantee suitable airflow.

Choose a CPU and platform

Pick the processor for the software you use rather than relying on core count or a brand-wide ranking. Gaming, lightly threaded tasks, compiling, rendering, and encoding can respond differently to core count, per-core performance, power limits, and memory configuration. Compare current independent tests for your workload, and include the cost of the motherboard and memory when comparing platforms.

The CPU sets the motherboard socket path, and the platform determines important features such as memory generation. AMD’s Ryzen 9000 desktop range includes models from six-core Ryzen 5 parts to higher-core-count Ryzen 9 parts; exact integrated graphics, cooler inclusion, and other features vary by SKU. Check the specific model’s specifications rather than assuming family-wide features. AMD describes AM5 as a DDR5 platform with PCIe 5.0 features and positions it as upgrade-oriented, but that is not a guarantee of future CPU availability, BIOS support, or pricing (AMD Ryzen desktop processors).

Do not treat AMD and Intel processors as interchangeable. Each CPU needs a compatible socket and motherboard. MSI identifies AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851 and LGA1700 as separate platform paths; confirm the exact processor and board pairing (MSI compatibility guide). An integrated GPU can provide a useful display and troubleshooting fallback if a discrete card is removed; a processor without integrated graphics cannot do that on its own.

Choose the GPU for your display and workload

Start with the resolution and refresh rate of your monitor, then compare GPU performance in the games or applications you actually use. Consider rasterized performance, ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation, VRAM, video encoding and decoding, driver support, noise, physical dimensions, and power. A 4K gaming build may sensibly devote a large share of its budget to the GPU; a competitive high-refresh-rate system can put more emphasis on CPU performance.

Check the exact GPU model rather than relying only on the GPU family name. Cards can differ in length, thickness, cooler design, power consumption, and connectors. Some newer high-performance models use 16-pin 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 connections; others use one or more 6+2-pin PCIe connectors. Verify the card’s stated requirements against the PSU’s supplied cables and the case’s clearance. MSI’s compatibility guide also advises checking connector type and quantity (MSI compatibility guide).

Select the motherboard, memory, and storage

Motherboard

Choose the motherboard after choosing the CPU platform. Confirm the socket and CPU support list, required BIOS version, memory generation, board form factor, M.2 slots, PCIe layout, networking, USB ports, audio, fan and pump headers, and SATA ports if you are reusing drives. Boards sharing a chipset can still differ substantially in connectivity, power delivery, layout, and firmware features. BIOS Flashback can be valuable if a board might need an update before it will boot with the selected processor.

Memory

DDR4 and DDR5 are physically keyed differently and are not interchangeable. Buy the type specified for the exact motherboard. Current AMD AM5 desktop systems use DDR5. As a practical starting point, 16 GB can suit basic use or a constrained budget, 32 GB is a sensible mainstream gaming and general-use target, and 64 GB or more can suit larger creative projects, virtual machines, heavy multitasking, or specialized workloads. The right amount depends on your applications, project sizes, mods, and background tasks.

EXPO and XMP profiles can apply advertised memory settings on supported systems, but profile operation is an overclock and is not guaranteed to be stable on every CPU, board, and kit combination. Start at default settings if stability is uncertain, then enable a profile and test. AMD describes EXPO as a memory-overclocking technology for supported Ryzen systems (AMD Ryzen desktop processors).

Storage

An NVMe SSD is a common choice for the operating system and frequently used applications. Add capacity for games and active projects, then use additional SSDs or hard drives for archives if appropriate. Check M.2 size and keying, supported PCIe generation, heatsink clearance, and whether an M.2 slot shares lanes with other slots or disables SATA ports. PCIe Gen 5 storage is not a requirement for gaming; the value of a faster drive depends on the workload. Storage is not a backup: keep separate copies of important files.

Choose the PSU, cooler, and case as a system

Power supply

Base PSU capacity on the exact CPU and GPU, the rest of the system, and reasonable headroom for transient loads or planned upgrades. Then verify the GPU connector type and count, CPU EPS connectors, cable length, physical form factor, and the PSU’s quality, warranty, and protections. A wattage label or 80 PLUS efficiency rating alone does not establish overall electrical quality. Do not mix modular cables across PSU models unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility. MSI recommends checking cable types and availability as well as capacity (MSI PC-building guide).

Cooling and airflow

Match the cooler to the CPU’s sustained workload, mounting socket, case clearance, noise priorities, and memory height. A capable air cooler is simpler and suitable for many systems; an all-in-one liquid cooler can offer radiator flexibility but adds a pump and radiator. Liquid cooling is not automatically necessary for a high-performance CPU.

Plan airflow rather than just counting fans. A common arrangement uses front or bottom intake and rear exhaust, with top exhaust where the case layout and radiator permit. Check that a front radiator will not collide with the GPU and that the cooler, RAM, radiator, and motherboard heatsinks have clearance. MSI notes that some high-end graphics cards exceed 330 mm, so check the exact card and case dimensions rather than assuming fit (MSI PC-building guide).

Case and form factor

ATX cases usually offer more room and a broad selection of parts, while Micro-ATX can reduce size and cost with closer clearance checks. Mini-ITX systems are compact but constrain expansion, cooling, cable management, and often cost more. Confirm that the case supports the motherboard size and every component’s dimensions. E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX are distinct form factors; do not assume a smaller case accepts a larger board (MSI PC-building guide).

Use build templates, not timeless shopping lists

These templates describe priorities, not guaranteed parts or prices. Choose exact models after checking current prices, availability, workload benchmarks, and compatibility.

Build type Starting specification Key trade-off
Budget gaming Six-core mainstream CPU; value-oriented GPU; 16–32 GB RAM; 1 TB NVMe SSD; quality 550–650 W PSU depending on GPU; air cooler; airflow-focused Micro-ATX or ATX case. Spend on the GPU needed for the target games and resolution; keep capacity and optional features in balance.
Mainstream 1440p Six- to eight-core CPU; DDR5 platform; 32 GB RAM; current midrange GPU; 1–2 TB NVMe SSD; modern 650–750 W PSU subject to exact GPU requirements; tower air cooler or modest AIO. Balance GPU performance with the desired refresh rate, noise, and upgrade budget.
High-end gaming Gaming-focused eight-core or higher-end CPU; DDR5 motherboard; 32–64 GB RAM; high-end GPU; 2 TB or larger SSD; PSU capacity based on the exact GPU; high-capacity air cooler or suitable AIO; roomy ATX case. High-end parts require particular attention to PSU connectors, case clearance, and cooling.
Productivity or creator CPU chosen for the specific application; 64 GB or more when project size warrants it; GPU selected for the application’s rendering, encoding, AI, or compute support; fast primary storage plus project and backup storage. Gaming results do not establish performance in professional applications; check software-specific requirements and tests.

Check compatibility before ordering

Compatibility tools are useful first-pass filters, not final approval. Newegg explicitly says its PC Builder is an aid and that manufacturer specifications remain the authority (Newegg PC Builder). Assemble the PC

Use the case and motherboard manuals as the authority for your exact layout; the order can change with the case and cooler. Work on a stable, non-carpeted surface where possible. Have a Phillips screwdriver, cable ties or Velcro straps, thermal paste if the cooler does not include it, and an OS installation USB. Read the manuals and inspect parts for shipping damage before installation.

  1. Install the CPU in the motherboard socket, following the socket and CPU instructions without forcing it.
  2. Install the M.2 SSD and memory in the motherboard’s recommended slots.
  3. Fit the CPU cooler mounting hardware and cooler according to its manual; apply paste if required.
  4. Install the correct motherboard standoffs in the case and fit a separate I/O shield if needed.
  5. Mount the motherboard and PSU, then install the graphics card in the primary PCIe slot.
  6. Connect the 24-pin motherboard cable, CPU EPS cable or cables, and GPU power with the correct dedicated cable.
  7. Connect the case power, reset, and LED leads; front USB and audio headers; and case fans or pump headers.
  8. Check that the GPU is fully seated, cables are secure and clear of fans, and no extra standoff is under the motherboard.

First boot, BIOS, and operating-system setup

Verify POST and firmware

  1. Connect the monitor to the discrete GPU if one is installed, then connect a keyboard and power.
  2. Turn on the PSU and press the case power button. Allow several minutes for a first boot, especially while a DDR5 system trains memory.
  3. Enter UEFI/BIOS and check that the CPU, memory capacity, SSD, fan speeds, and temperatures are visible and plausible.
  4. Update BIOS only by following the motherboard manufacturer’s instructions and using the correct file for the exact board.
  5. Install the operating system at default memory settings first if you want to establish baseline stability; enable EXPO or XMP afterward and test.

Install Windows 11

Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page provides the Media Creation Tool for x64 installation media. Microsoft says the process requires a license, internet access, and suitable blank media, and warns that installing on unsupported hardware may cause compatibility and support problems. The tool is for x64 systems rather than Arm-based PCs; installation media creation can erase the selected USB drive (Microsoft Windows 11 download).

  1. Download the official Media Creation Tool and run it as administrator.
  2. Accept the license terms, choose Create installation media for another PC, and select language, edition, and 64-bit architecture.
  3. Select the USB drive, then boot the new PC from it.
  4. Choose the target SSD and complete Windows setup.
  5. Install the motherboard chipset, LAN or Wi-Fi, and audio drivers, followed by the graphics driver from the relevant manufacturers.
  6. Run Windows Update, confirm activation, and create a recovery option.

Linux is a viable option if your applications, games, anti-cheat systems, drivers, and peripherals support it. Check those individually rather than assuming it is a universal Windows replacement.

Troubleshoot common first-build problems

No power

  • Check the PSU switch, AC cable, outlet or surge protector, 24-pin motherboard cable, and CPU EPS cable.
  • Confirm that the case power-switch lead is on the correct motherboard header.
  • Check that standoffs are in the right locations and that no misplaced standoff or loose screw is shorting the board.

Fans spin, but there is no display

  • Confirm the monitor input and connect the display cable to the GPU when a discrete GPU is installed.
  • Reseat the GPU and its power cable, then reseat the RAM. Test one memory module at a time in the manual’s recommended slot.
  • Check diagnostic LEDs or beep codes and confirm the motherboard BIOS supports the CPU.
  • Reset CMOS according to the board manual if necessary.

Memory instability or boot loops

  • Return memory to default settings, then test one module at a time in the recommended slot.
  • Update BIOS, verify the kit and slots, and disable or reduce the EXPO/XMP memory setting if the system is unstable.
  • Run a memory test; check the motherboard’s qualified vendor list as one compatibility reference.

CPU overheating

  • Check cooler mounting pressure, remove any protective film from the cooler base, and verify the fan or pump is connected to the correct header.
  • Confirm cooler socket support, fan direction, unobstructed radiator fins, and adequate case airflow. Reapply thermal paste if needed.

SSD missing or system crashes

  • For an undetected SSD, reseat it, check the selected M.2 slot and lane-sharing rules, and review BIOS storage settings. If visible in the operating system but unallocated, initialize and format it there.
  • For crashes or shutdowns, return CPU, GPU, and memory settings to stock; check temperatures and power cables; and test CPU, GPU, memory, and storage separately.
  • Update BIOS and drivers, and disconnect unnecessary USB devices while diagnosing. Event Viewer can provide clues, but is not definitive proof of a cause.

Choose between DIY, a prebuilt, or an upgrade

A DIY build gives you control over exact components and can make future upgrades easier, but you take responsibility for compatibility, assembly, and troubleshooting. Component warranties are handled separately, and setup takes time. A prebuilt includes assembly and usually a system-level warranty, which can simplify support and returns; inspect its component list carefully because some systems use proprietary parts or make compromises in cooling, memory, storage, or upgrade access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upgrade an existing PC when its case, PSU, storage, or platform still suits the job and a targeted component fixes the actual bottleneck. Consider a new build when the CPU socket or memory generation is unsuitable, the PSU lacks required connectors, the case cannot fit the needed hardware, or several major parts need replacement. Used components can lower cost, but assess condition and warranty. A used PSU is a poor fit for risk-averse buyers when its age, operating history, cables, or warranty cannot be established; never reuse modular cables across PSU models without explicit confirmation.

Tools and final checks

PCPartPicker offers a way to build, compare, and share a parts list; MSI’s guide recommends it for this purpose (PCPartPicker; MSI PC-building guide). Retailer builders can be convenient when buying from one marketplace, but do not treat their compatibility flags as guarantees. Before ordering, revisit manufacturer CPU-support lists, motherboard manuals, GPU and case dimensions, PSU connector specifications, and current retailer prices.

  1. Define workload, monitor target, and total budget.
  2. Choose the GPU tier, then balance the CPU and platform to the workload.
  3. Select the motherboard, memory, storage, cooler, PSU, and case around the exact components.
  4. Run the list through a compatibility tool, then independently verify BIOS support, memory type, lane sharing, clearance, and connectors.
  5. Recheck price, stock, seller, and return terms immediately before purchase.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
