Verdict: The PBX Astral Prism is worth considering only when the lowest possible price and a usable boom microphone matter more than comfort, sound accuracy, isolation, or wireless freedom. RTINGS describes it as an extremely inexpensive wired headset aimed at buyers who need microphone functionality at a very low price. Its microphone records voices clearly and separates speech from background noise better than its price suggests, but the headset has a loose fit, flimsy construction, weak isolation, and heavily recessed treble. The approximately $10 figure comes from the review period and is not a guaranteed current retail price.

What is the PBX Astral Prism?

The PBX Astral Prism is an over-ear, closed-back gaming headset with a permanently attached boom microphone, analog wired connectivity, decorative LED lighting in the ear-cup yokes, and an included lighted stand. The reviewed version is white. It is designed for basic PC and console gaming, voice chat, and casual listening rather than audiophile playback or competitive isolation.

RTINGS published its evaluation on August 18, 2026, using RTINGS Methodology v2.3. The laboratory received the headset in July 2026 and began testing on July 30. RTINGS’ broader 2026 test program covered 915 headphones, which provides context for the review’s comparative measurements, although that figure is not a performance score for the Astral Prism itself.

The headset carries audio and microphone signals through its analog connection, so it does not require a wireless receiver, battery, or companion software for its core functions. That simplicity is useful on devices with a compatible headset jack, but it also means there is no Bluetooth mode, USB audio processing, or wireless range to evaluate.

Is the PBX Astral Prism good for gaming and voice chat?

It is passable for casual wired gaming, with voice chat as its strongest use case. The boom microphone is the component that most clearly exceeds expectations at this price, while the speakers are adequate for ordinary game audio but not consistently accurate or detailed.

Microphone performance

RTINGS reports good recording quality, balanced voice detail, and effective separation from noisy backgrounds. Teammates should be able to understand speech without the hollow, excessively thin character common in very cheap microphones. The boom design also keeps the microphone close to the mouth, which helps maintain a consistent level when you move your head.

That does not make it a studio microphone. The evaluation addresses intelligibility and background rejection, not broadcast-grade fullness, plosive control, monitoring, or software noise suppression. For party chat, multiplayer coordination, and occasional calls, the microphone is the clearest reason to choose this headset over inexpensive headphones without a boom.

Game audio and positional cues

The Astral Prism can deliver game sound through its analog connection, but its tuning is not neutral. A warm profile adds some high-bass emphasis, which can give explosions and lower effects extra weight. Treble is very recessed, however, so cymbals, high-pitched effects, and some detail in footsteps or environmental sounds can seem muted.

RTINGS also found poor left/right driver matching. Depending on your head shape and how the ear cups sit, a sound that should appear centered can shift slightly toward one side. That inconsistency is a disadvantage for competitive games where precise directional placement matters. It is less consequential for casual play, dialogue, and games in which atmosphere is more important than pinpoint imaging.

How does the Astral Prism sound?

Expect a colored, warm presentation rather than a balanced one. The elevated high bass gives the headset some impact, but the recessed treble removes sparkle and fine texture. Listeners who prefer bright, detailed sound may find music and busy game scenes dull; listeners who are sensitive to sharp highs may appreciate the softer top end.

  • Bass: Some high-bass emphasis adds body to effects and voices.
  • Midrange: Voice detail remains usable, especially through the boom microphone, but the overall tonal balance is shaped by the bass lift.
  • Treble: Strongly recessed, making cymbals and other high-frequency sounds quieter and less crisp.
  • Stereo consistency: Driver matching is poor, so left/right balance can vary with positioning and head shape.

Because the analog signal is not processed by a companion app, there is no documented software equalizer or virtual-surround control included with the headset. Any equalization would have to come from the operating system, game, console, or third-party software, and results would depend on that platform.

Is it comfortable for long sessions?

Comfort is one of the Astral Prism’s main weaknesses. RTINGS identifies cheap padding, small ear cups, limited headband adjustment, and a loose fit. People with larger heads or ears are especially likely to feel pressure, contact with the cup edges, or an unstable fit.

What the fit means in practice

  • Small ear cups: Ears may touch the inner surfaces instead of sitting fully inside the pads.
  • Limited adjustment: The headband offers less range than better-built gaming headsets, reducing the chance of finding an even clamp and ear-cup position.
  • Loose seal: Movement can break the seal, changing bass response and letting more outside sound in.
  • Padding: The inexpensive cushioning may compress quickly and can create pressure during long sessions.

There is no published measurement establishing a universal maximum session length, so comfort depends on your head and ear dimensions. If you cannot try it first, treat it as a short-session or backup headset rather than assuming it will remain comfortable through an all-day gaming session.

How much outside noise does it block?

Very little. The closed-back cups attenuate some treble, but they do little against midrange and bass sounds such as nearby conversation, traffic, or machinery. There is no active noise cancellation.

The weak seal and loose fit make isolation even less consistent from one wearer to another. In a quiet room, that may not matter. In a shared or noisy space, outside sound can compete with game audio, and raising the volume is not a reliable substitute for proper isolation.

What connection and device support does it provide?

The Astral Prism is wired-only and uses an analog connection carrying both audio and microphone signals. RTINGS reports support for full microphone and audio functionality on PCs and consoles with a compatible headset input.

Connection characteristic What it means
Analog wired audio No battery, pairing process, wireless receiver, or charging requirement.
Microphone plus headphone signal Voice chat and game audio can work through a compatible combined headset jack.
No Bluetooth It cannot be used as a Bluetooth gaming or mobile headset without an external adapter, and adapter compatibility is not established by the review.
No wireless mode You must remain physically connected to the gaming device.

The available data does not specify connector dimensions, cable length, inline controls, or whether a separate PC splitter is included. Check the package details for your region before purchase if your computer has separate headphone and microphone jacks or if you need a long cable.

What are the lighting and physical extras?

LED lighting appears in the ear-cup yokes, and the package includes a lighted stand. Those features give the headset a distinctive desk appearance and are unusual at an approximately $10 review-era price. They are cosmetic rather than performance features: the lighting does not improve microphone quality, sound balance, comfort, or isolation.

How durable is the PBX Astral Prism?

Build quality is described as flimsy. That assessment, combined with the loose fit and inexpensive padding, suggests treating the headset as a low-cost accessory rather than equipment intended for heavy daily abuse.

Handle the ear-cup hinges and boom gently, avoid stretching the headband farther than necessary, and store it on the included stand instead of leaving it under books or in a packed bag. The review does not provide a long-term failure rate, warranty term, or replaceable-parts schedule, so durability beyond the tested sample is uncertain.

What are the Astral Prism’s main strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths Limitations
Very low review-era price, approximately $10 Flimsy construction
Clear, balanced boom-microphone recording Loose, uncomfortable fit for many users
Effective separation from noisy backgrounds in microphone testing Small ear cups and limited headband adjustment
Analog audio and microphone support for compatible PCs and consoles Weak isolation and no active noise cancellation
Distinctive LED ear-cup lighting and included lighted stand Very recessed treble and inconsistent left/right matching
No battery or wireless setup to manage No Bluetooth, limited controls, and no documented companion app

How does it compare with other budget gaming headsets?

The most useful comparison is not a specification race; it is deciding which compromise you can tolerate. The Astral Prism prioritizes low cost, microphone performance, and lighting. Other models trade a higher price for comfort, construction, sound balance, or wireless operation.

Model Connection Why consider it What you give up or pay for
PBX Astral Prism Wired analog Lowest-cost option, strong boom microphone for its class, LED lighting, lighted stand Flimsy build, loose fit, weak isolation, recessed treble, no wireless mode
Turtle Beach Recon 50X/50P Wired RTINGS considers it better for most people because it is more comfortable, better built, and more balanced in bass and treble Lacks the Astral Prism’s LED lighting; current price not stated in the evaluation
Logitech G432 Wired gaming headset More comfortable fit, better build, more balanced sound, and companion-app support Costs more than the Astral Prism; exact current price is not stated here
Vibe DG-985BT Wireless/Bluetooth-oriented Better choice when Bluetooth use is a requirement The Astral Prism’s wired boom microphone captures voice more naturally according to RTINGS; the two target different uses

The comparison does not establish current retail prices, regional availability, warranty terms, or accessory bundles for the alternatives. Use those as buying axes rather than assuming an exact price gap.

Who should buy the PBX Astral Prism?

Buy it when a very low one-time cost is the overriding requirement and you mainly need a microphone for casual gaming or chat. It also makes sense as an emergency spare, a second headset for a guest, or a desk setup where the included lighting matters.

  • Good match: casual players, family PCs, occasional voice chat, and buyers who already have a quiet room.
  • Possible match: users who value a boom mic more than music fidelity and can tolerate a loose fit.
  • Poor match: competitive players who depend on treble detail and stable imaging.
  • Poor match: anyone needing Bluetooth, active noise cancellation, or long-session comfort.
  • Poor match: larger heads or ears that regularly struggle with small gaming-headset cups.

When should you choose an upgrade instead?

Choose a more comfortable wired model if you play for hours, wear glasses, have larger ears, or want more even bass and treble. RTINGS identifies the Recon 50X/50P as the clearest wired step up for most people and places the G432 further up the quality ladder with improved fit, construction, sound balance, and app support.

Choose a wireless or Bluetooth model when cable-free movement is non-negotiable. The Vibe DG-985BT represents that trade-off: it addresses the wireless requirement, while the Astral Prism retains the advantage of a more natural-sounding wired boom microphone. Do not buy the Astral Prism hoping to add wireless functionality later unless you have verified that a suitable external adapter works with your device and microphone.

How should you set it up?

Setup is intentionally simple, but checking the signal path prevents common chat problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the headset’s analog plug to a compatible combined headset jack on the PC or console.
  2. Open the platform’s audio settings and select the connected headset as both output and microphone input.
  3. Speak while watching the input meter or using the platform’s microphone test. Keep the boom near your mouth without touching it.
  4. Play a left-right channel test or a familiar game scene to confirm that both drivers work and that the stereo image is centered.
  5. Adjust volume at the device. If your computer uses separate headphone and microphone sockets, verify whether your package includes the required splitter before relying on voice chat.

If the microphone works but game audio does not, or vice versa, the problem is usually an incompatible jack arrangement, an incorrect operating-system input selection, or a loose plug. The review confirms analog audio and microphone support, but it does not document every adapter or console configuration.

What problems are most likely, and how can you troubleshoot them?

People cannot hear you

Confirm that the platform has selected the Astral Prism microphone rather than a built-in laptop or controller microphone. Check mute controls, reseat the plug, and move the boom closer to your mouth. If the input meter never moves, test the headset on another compatible device to separate a headset fault from a jack or software problem.

One side sounds louder

First reseat the plug and make sure the ear cups are positioned symmetrically. Because RTINGS found poor left/right driver matching and sensitivity to head shape and positioning, some imbalance may remain even when the connection is secure.

The sound is dull

The recessed treble is a measured characteristic, not necessarily a defect in your unit. You can try a modest treble adjustment in your game or operating system, but aggressive equalization cannot correct a loose seal, driver mismatch, or limited hardware detail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outside noise is distracting

The headset has no active noise cancellation and blocks little midrange or bass noise. Lower background noise, move closer to the audio source, or choose a model with stronger passive isolation or active cancellation instead of relying on higher volume.

Is the approximately $10 price still a good deal?

It can be, but the price must be checked at the time and in the region where you buy. The approximately $10 figure is RTINGS’ review-era description, not a guaranteed current price, sale price, or universal MSRP. Shipping, taxes, bundle differences, and regional availability can change the value substantially.

At that level, the microphone and included lighting may justify the purchase for a backup or occasional-use headset. If the Astral Prism costs close to a better-built wired alternative, the comfort and sound improvements of the alternative become more important than the stand and LEDs.

What is the final buying decision?

The PBX Astral Prism is a microphone-first budget headset, not an all-purpose audio upgrade. Its clear boom recording, analog simplicity, and decorative lighting are genuine advantages. Its flimsy build, loose fit, weak isolation, muted treble, and inconsistent stereo image limit it to casual use and buyers with modest expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it only when those limits fit your priorities and the current price remains exceptionally low. Spend more on a better-built wired headset for regular long sessions, or choose a wireless model when Bluetooth is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PBX Astral Prism compatible with a phone or tablet?

The evaluation confirms analog PC and console support but does not document phone or tablet testing, connector dimensions, or adapter behavior. Compatibility therefore depends on whether your mobile device accepts the headset’s analog plug and supplies microphone input through that jack or an appropriate adapter.

Does the headset include volume and mute controls?

The available testing describes the controls as limited but does not list a complete control layout or confirm an inline volume wheel and mute switch. Check the current package specification if those controls are essential to your setup.

Can the LED lights be turned off?

The review confirms LED lighting on the ear-cup yokes and a lighted stand, but it does not establish brightness levels, power requirements, or an on/off method. Treat the lighting behavior as a purchase detail to verify with the seller rather than assuming it is configurable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the boom microphone detachable or replaceable?

The Astral Prism is described as having a boom microphone, but the available evaluation does not state whether the boom detaches or whether replacement parts are sold. If a replaceable microphone is important, choose a headset whose manufacturer explicitly documents that feature.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
