What Parallels Desktop 15 changed
Announced on August 13, 2019, Parallels Desktop 15 moved its graphics support to Apple Metal and added support for DirectX 11, 10, and 9. Parallels said the new graphics path improved performance for Windows applications and games. That is the company’s product claim, not a controlled benchmark showing that games generally run faster than on a native Windows installation or another way of running Windows on a Mac. DirectX 11 support means the virtual machine can provide that graphics API to compatible Windows software. It does not guarantee compatibility with every game feature, anti-cheat system, or hardware requirement.
How to enable DirectX 11 support

- Try the game and check its own graphics and compatibility requirements. Support for DirectX 11 alone does not confirm that the title will run.
Will games run faster?
There is no universal frame-rate figure or controlled result here that can predict performance across games and Macs. Parallels says most DirectX 11 games are hardware-intensive and that performance is directly related to the Mac’s GPU, CPU, and hard disk. Version 15 update notes mention work involving games including FIFA 19, Fallout 4, Elite Dangerous, Prey (2017), Crysis 3, and Anno 1800. What can prevent a game from working?
Parallels’ current gaming guidance warns that compatibility varies by game and Mac. - Anti-cheat: Confirm whether the game’s anti-cheat system works in a Windows virtual machine; kernel-level anti-cheat can be a barrier.
- Mac hardware: The GPU and CPU affect game performance, and Parallels also identifies the hard disk as a factor.
- Game-specific evidence: Look for results for the exact game and Mac model. A release-note mention or another user’s experience does not establish how it will run on your system.
How to decide whether Parallels is right for a game
Start with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements, then verify its graphics API and any anti-cheat requirements against Parallels’ current compatibility guidance. Next, look for a performance result measured on the same game and comparable Mac hardware. Without that exact evidence, treat performance as uncertain rather than assuming the DirectX 11 feature guarantees a playable frame rate.
