Choose PAPERHEAD if you want a movement shooter wrapped in surreal cardboard horror, with a pencil that can both attack enemies and alter rooms. Choose ULTRAKILL instead if your priority is an explicitly score-driven loop built around weapon variations, movement abilities, blood-based healing, combos, ranks and optional challenges. Those are advertised design differences; store descriptions do not establish which game is faster, harder, longer or objectively better in play.

This guide compares the two by the decisions that actually affect a purchase: how combat is framed, whether the environment is an active tool, what kind of replay goals are advertised, how the tone differs, and whether the practical PC details fit your setup. It also separates the released PAPERHEAD from the earlier EP.0 prologue, whose store listing is no longer available.

What makes PAPERHEAD different?

PAPERHEAD’s Steam listing describes the game as “a mix of a fast-paced movement boomer shooter and an adventure horror game, featuring a unique soundtrack.” Its setting is an abandoned research facility presented as a cardboard world, and its presentation deliberately combines cute-looking materials with cartoonish blood and gore. That combination makes the game more than a conventional retro-FPS exercise: the premise is built around moving through a strange environment, fighting with familiar weapons and using an unusual drawing tool to interact with spaces.

The defining mechanic is the pencil. The store description calls it both a weapon and “a tool to change the world around you,” giving examples such as sketching bombs and drawing doors. The shotgun provides conventional firepower, while boots let you throw enemies, kick exploding barrels and stomp heads. In practical terms, the advertised loop asks you to think about a room as something that can be edited, not only cleared with gunfire.

Release, platform and player count

The full game released on October 9, 2026. Steam credits Paperhead te4m as developer and HypeTrain Digital as publisher. The listing identifies it as a single-player Windows game with full controller support and Steam Cloud. It also lists 11 interface and subtitle languages. These are store-provided features, not results from an independent compatibility test. The cited listing does not describe multiplayer, co-op or a console edition, so do not buy it expecting a shared campaign or a confirmed non-Windows version.

What the review number means

On October 13, 2026, Steam displayed 325 reviews for PAPERHEAD, with 94% positive. That is a changing store snapshot, not a scientific quality score, a market statistic or evidence that every player will have the same experience. It is useful as a dated indication of current Steam reception, but it should not replace reading recent reviews or checking the system requirements. Review totals and percentages can change as more owners post or revise reviews.

How PAPERHEAD’s advertised gameplay fits together

Movement and close-range actions

The store positions PAPERHEAD in the movement-shooter tradition, so mobility is part of its identity rather than an optional embellishment. Its listed boot actions add physical, close-range choices to the shotgun: an enemy can be thrown, an explosive barrel can be kicked, and a head can be stomped. Those examples imply that encounters can involve spacing, momentum and environmental hazards alongside aiming, but the store copy does not explain exact input timing or whether every enemy supports every action.

The description does not provide frame-rate measurements, movement speeds, enemy counts or a difficulty curve, so those details should not be inferred from the genre label. “Movement shooter” tells you what the developers emphasize; it is not a benchmark proving that the game matches another title’s speed or precision.

The pencil as weapon and level tool

Most boomer shooters give you guns, alternate fire modes or movement tricks. PAPERHEAD’s documented differentiator is that the pencil also changes the environment. Drawing a door suggests a route-creation interaction; sketching a bomb suggests a way to create or place an explosive effect. The official copy does not enumerate every drawing, puzzle, restriction or resource cost, so prospective players should treat these examples as confirmed mechanics rather than a complete catalog of what the pencil can do.

This distinction matters when you compare it with a conventional arena shooter. In PAPERHEAD, the room itself is part of the advertised problem-solving vocabulary. A player who enjoys looking for a new angle, opening a route or turning an object into a hazard may value that more than a large weapon roster. Conversely, if you mainly want to optimize weapon swaps and attack strings, the pencil’s environmental role may not be the feature that keeps you playing.

Adventure-horror framing

The abandoned research facility and cardboard art direction establish an adventure-horror frame around the shooting. The official description supports a surreal, horror-inflected tone and cartoon gore. It does not establish how often the game uses scares, whether it follows conventional survival-horror resource management, or how frightening it is in practice. If you want a standard survival-horror structure, the store copy is not enough to promise that; if you want an unusual horror setting around fast combat, the premise is explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The mixture of toy-like scenery and blood is also a useful expectation-setting detail. “Cardboard horror” should not be read as realistic body horror, nor should the cartoon treatment be read as proof that the game is harmless or purely comedic. The safest conclusion is that its visual identity intentionally places cute and disturbing elements together.

What ULTRAKILL emphasizes instead

ULTRAKILL’s Steam listing calls it “a fast-paced ultraviolent old school FPS that fuses together classic shooters like Quake, modern shooters like Doom (2016) and character action games like Devil May Cry.” Its advertised systems make performance expression and scoring central to the loop.

Movement abilities and weapon variations

The listing highlights movement abilities and multiple variations of weapons. That combination points toward a game in which positioning, weapon selection and chaining attacks are intended to interact. The store page does not supply a comparative test against PAPERHEAD, so it would be inaccurate to declare ULTRAKILL categorically faster or more mechanically demanding. The defensible distinction is emphasis: ULTRAKILL explicitly foregrounds movement, weapon variety and character-action influence, while PAPERHEAD foregrounds pencil-based environmental interaction and its horror setting.

For a first-time buyer, ask what you want to practice. ULTRAKILL’s advertised structure rewards learning how its weapons and movement options combine. PAPERHEAD’s advertised structure invites experimentation with what the pencil and the room can do. Both can appeal to players who like aggressive first-person combat, but they present different reasons to replay an encounter.

Blood-based health recovery

ULTRAKILL’s page states that health can be recovered by soaking in enemy blood. This is a specific risk-and-reward rule: staying close to enemies can be part of survival rather than merely a hazard. The source does not establish exact healing values, timing windows or how the mechanic behaves in every encounter, so those details require checking the game itself. It is still a meaningful contrast with PAPERHEAD’s store description, which does not advertise a comparable blood-recovery system.

Style scores, combos and ranks

Style scoring, combo scoring, ranks and optional challenges are named features of ULTRAKILL’s store description. These systems give players reasons to replay encounters for cleaner or more elaborate performances, beyond simply reaching the next room. A player who likes measurable mastery goals may find that language more immediately informative than a general promise of fast shooting.

The listing also labels ULTRAKILL Early Access. Early Access status matters when you are choosing a game for a settled, complete feature set: content, balance and presentation may continue to change, whereas PAPERHEAD is listed as a released title. Early Access is not a quality verdict, but it is a practical condition to accept before purchasing.

PAPERHEAD and ULTRAKILL compared by the decisions that matter

Decision axis PAPERHEAD ULTRAKILL
Core advertised identity Fast movement boomer shooter combined with adventure horror Fast-paced ultraviolent old-school FPS fused with classic shooters, modern shooters and character-action games
Signature interaction Pencil works as a weapon and changes the world; examples include drawing doors and sketching bombs Movement abilities, weapon variations and blood-based health recovery
Close-range or physical options Boots can throw enemies, kick exploding barrels and stomp heads Store description emphasizes weapon and movement systems rather than a pencil-like environmental tool
Scoring and replay systems The cited listing does not describe a style-rank or combo-score system Style scoring, combo scoring, ranks and optional challenges
Setting and tone Abandoned research facility in a cardboard world, with cartoonish blood and gore Ultraviolent old-school FPS presentation with character-action influence
Availability status Released October 9, 2026 Steam listing identifies the game as Early Access
Player format Single-player; full controller support; Steam Cloud The cited store description is used here for its combat and scoring systems; it does not provide a matching practical-specification set

This table compares what each official listing chooses to advertise. It is not a performance benchmark or a review scorecard. Neither source supports claims about campaign length, frame rate, input latency, balance or comparative difficulty. It also does not prove that one game has more content, a larger arsenal or better controls.

Environmental play or score chasing?

Choose the environmental-interaction side

PAPERHEAD is the better fit when your buying decision starts with the question, “What can I do to this room?” The pencil’s ability to create bombs or doors gives the environment a direct role in combat and traversal. The cardboard facility and adventure-horror framing reinforce that identity, so the setting is not merely a backdrop for target practice.

This choice is especially clear if you enjoy games where a single unusual tool changes how you read a space. You may prefer discovering a new use for the pencil over chasing a higher displayed rank. That is a preference match, not a claim that PAPERHEAD lacks replay value or that its encounters cannot be intense.

Choose the score-and-combo side

ULTRAKILL is the clearer fit when you want the game to track how stylishly you fight. Its advertised ranks, combo scoring, weapon variations and optional challenges give measurable goals to players who enjoy refining routes, attack choices and movement. Blood-based healing also makes aggressive positioning part of the stated design rather than an incidental tactic.

Tone: surreal cardboard horror versus ultraviolent action

PAPERHEAD’s tone is deliberately mixed: the facility is made of cardboard and the blood and gore are cartoonish, yet the premise is still an abandoned research site and the store calls the game an adventure horror. That makes “cute” and “disturbing” simultaneous descriptors. Do not read the listing as a promise of a conventional haunted-house structure or a particular scare frequency.

ULTRAKILL’s official wording is more direct about ultraviolence and its lineage from Quake, Doom (2016) and Devil May Cry. If you prefer a presentation whose stated goal is combat intensity and style expression, that language is a closer match. If you want a deliberately odd world in which the art direction and a drawing mechanic are central, PAPERHEAD has the more unusual premise.

System requirements and controls for PAPERHEAD

Steam’s PAPERHEAD page lists the following Windows requirements. They are publisher-provided minimum and recommended specifications, not an independent compatibility test.

Specification Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 7 64-bit or later Windows 10 64-bit
Memory 2 GB RAM 4 GB RAM
Graphics GeForce 9800GT or equivalent GTX 460 or equivalent
DirectX DirectX 9 DirectX 11
Storage 2 GB 3 GB

The same listing identifies full controller support, single-player play and Steam Cloud. The 11 listed interface and subtitle languages can matter if you are choosing a game for a non-English interface or subtitles. The listing does not establish voice-language coverage, so do not assume all 11 languages include voiced dialogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Meets the minimum” should not be interpreted as a guaranteed frame rate or universal compatibility; drivers, integrated graphics, background software and display settings can affect an individual PC. The requirements also do not tell you how the game behaves on Linux, macOS, handheld PCs or consoles. Confirm platform support on the current store page for your device.

Cost, editions and what to verify at checkout

Steam displayed a purchase option for PAPERHEAD, together with regional pricing and separately sold soundtrack and supporter-pack offerings, when the listing was accessed on October 13, 2026. Prices, discounts, bundles and availability can change by country and over time. Check the live page in your currency before treating any number as a current cost.

The soundtrack and supporter pack are optional digital add-ons, not different gameplay editions established by the cited listing. There is no verified physical product, book, manual, model kit or hardware item that serves as an honest substitute for this comparison. If a retailer page offers merchandise, verify that it is official and that you are not accidentally buying an unrelated product.

ULTRAKILL’s page should likewise be checked for its current price and Early Access terms at checkout. A sale price today does not establish a permanent MSRP, and the fact that one title is released while the other is in Early Access does not by itself determine value.

What PAPERHEAD EP.0 means for new and returning players

PAPERHEAD EP.0 is the earlier prologue, released November 14, 2024. Its page describes the same broad premise: shotgun combat, a pencil and a cardboard horror setting. However, the store page currently says it is no longer available there. Do not assume a new player can download it from that listing.

Steam displayed 1,164 English reviews for EP.0, with 92% positive, on October 13, 2026. That figure is a separate, dated snapshot and must not be combined with the full game’s 325-review, 94%-positive snapshot. The two numbers describe different store pages, different release stages and different review pools.

The available information does not establish how much the finished game differs from the prologue, whether every prologue encounter appears in the full release, or whether ownership of EP.0 grants any entitlement to PAPERHEAD. EP.0 should therefore be treated as historical context rather than a substitute for the released title or a guaranteed preview that new users can access.

A practical decision framework

Pick PAPERHEAD when these priorities match

  • You want a single-player Windows shooter whose advertised hook is a pencil that edits the environment.
  • You like an abandoned-facility setting presented through cardboard scenery and cartoonish gore.
  • You want movement combat plus physical boot actions such as throwing enemies, kicking explosive barrels and stomping heads.
  • You prefer choosing a released game rather than one whose Steam page is labeled Early Access.
  • You need documented controller support and Steam Cloud on the store listing.
  • You are comfortable checking modest, older-style PC requirements instead of assuming modern hardware is necessary.
  • You want a concept that blends combat with adventure-horror atmosphere rather than a store pitch centered on ranking every fight.

Pick ULTRAKILL when these priorities match

  • You want style scoring, combos, ranks and optional challenges to shape how you replay fights.
  • You are interested in movement abilities and weapon variations as the main expression tools.
  • You find blood-based health recovery and close-range aggression appealing.
  • You want a game that openly combines classic shooter, modern shooter and character-action influences.
  • You accept the Early Access status shown on its Steam page.
  • You would rather improve a combat performance score than experiment with a world-editing tool.

When neither description settles it

Use the official pages to verify current pricing, regional availability and any changes to features before buying. Steam displayed a purchase option for PAPERHEAD, along with separately sold soundtrack and supporter-pack offerings; prices, discounts and bundles vary by country and can change. If responsiveness, difficulty, campaign length or performance is your deciding factor, the cited store descriptions cannot answer it; look for current, clearly identified hands-on coverage rather than treating genre labels as measurements.

A sensible checklist is short: confirm the platform, read the current system requirements, decide whether controller support matters, note whether Early Access is acceptable, and identify the loop you are most likely to repeat. Do not let a review percentage or a familiar genre label answer those questions for you.

Common comparison mistakes

Mistake: treating “boomer shooter” as a complete specification

The label indicates a retro-inspired first-person action lineage, but it does not tell you movement speed, enemy design, level length, accessibility options or difficulty. PAPERHEAD and ULTRAKILL both use language associated with fast old-school shooters while advertising different secondary systems.

Mistake: assuming the pencil is only a novelty weapon

The official PAPERHEAD description explicitly says the pencil changes the world and gives doors and bombs as examples. Reducing it to a cosmetic gimmick misses the environmental-interaction part of the pitch. At the same time, the listing does not promise unlimited drawing, procedural creation or a full construction sandbox.

Mistake: combining the two Steam review snapshots

The full game showed 325 reviews and 94% positive on October 13, 2026. EP.0 showed 1,164 English reviews and 92% positive on that date. They are not one combined score, and neither percentage is an independent quality measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming EP.0 is a current demo

The prologue page records its November 14, 2024 release and currently says it is no longer available there. Returning owners may remember it, but new buyers should not plan around obtaining it from that listing.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

What can and cannot be concluded from the comparison

The evidence supports a feature-based choice, not a universal ranking. PAPERHEAD’s documented identity is fast movement combat plus pencil-driven environmental interaction in a surreal horror setting. ULTRAKILL’s documented identity is movement, weapon variation, blood recovery and score-based mastery in an ultraviolent action framework. Neither official page establishes which game has the better controls, tougher encounters, longer campaign, steadier frame rate or greater value for a particular player.

For a concise decision: buy PAPERHEAD for the pencil, room manipulation and cardboard horror premise; choose ULTRAKILL for scoring, combos, ranks and a more explicitly character-action-influenced combat loop. Treat Steam review percentages as dated snapshots, verify the current store pages before purchase, and base the final choice on which advertised loop you are most likely to play repeatedly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PAPERHEAD like ULTRAKILL?

Both are presented as fast, old-school-inspired first-person shooters, but their advertised hooks differ. PAPERHEAD combines movement combat with adventure horror and a pencil that can alter rooms. ULTRAKILL emphasizes movement abilities, weapon variations, blood-based health recovery, style and combo scoring, ranks and optional challenges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes PAPERHEAD different from other boomer shooters?

Its official Steam description makes the pencil a central differentiator: it is both a weapon and a tool for changing the world, with sketching bombs and drawing doors given as examples. The game also places that combat in an abandoned cardboard research facility with cartoonish blood and gore.

Should I play PAPERHEAD or ULTRAKILL?

Choose PAPERHEAD if environmental interaction and surreal cardboard horror appeal to you. Choose ULTRAKILL if you want score chasing, combos, ranks, weapon variations and an explicitly character-action-influenced combat loop. The available store descriptions do not prove that either is faster, harder or better overall.

Is PAPERHEAD single-player and does it support controllers?

Yes. Steam lists PAPERHEAD as single-player with full controller support and Steam Cloud. It is listed for Windows, with 11 interface and subtitle languages.

What are PAPERHEAD’s PC requirements?

The listed minimum is Windows 7 64-bit or later, 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 9800GT or equivalent, DirectX 9 and 2 GB storage. Recommended specifications are Windows 10 64-bit, 4 GB RAM, a GTX 460 or equivalent, DirectX 11 and 3 GB storage. These are publisher-provided requirements, not a guaranteed performance test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PAPERHEAD EP.0 still available?

The EP.0 Steam page records a November 14, 2024 release and currently says it is no longer available there. It should not be treated as a guaranteed downloadable demo for new players or as a substitute for the full game.

How do PAPERHEAD’s Steam reviews compare with EP.0’s?

On October 13, 2026, Steam displayed 325 PAPERHEAD reviews with 94% positive and 1,164 English EP.0 reviews with 92% positive. They are separate, dated snapshots from different store pages, not a combined score or scientific quality measure.

Is ULTRAKILL finished?

The cited Steam listing labels ULTRAKILL Early Access. That means buyers should accept that content, balance or presentation may continue to change; the label is a status description, not a judgment about quality.

How much does PAPERHEAD cost?

Steam displayed a purchase option, regional pricing, and separately sold soundtrack and supporter-pack offerings when accessed October 13, 2026. Prices, discounts, bundles and availability are volatile, so check the live Steam page in your country before buying.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: PAPERHEAD is the pick for pencil-powered room manipulation, movement combat and surreal cardboard horror. ULTRAKILL is the pick for weapon variation, blood-based healing, combos, ranks and score-driven mastery. Compare the advertised loops and current Steam details, not an unsupported overall ranking.
