AI can propose or issue a Bitcoin-mining command only when a mine’s own identity, network, deployment and approval controls let it do so. Tether’s Mining Development Kit (MDK) supplies a common interface between software agents and equipment, pools and site systems; it does not decide which human or service is authorized to press “approve.” In the v0.11 reference flow, a write such as rebooting a miner pauses for approval, but a shared local operator identity can make that approval non-person-specific. The practical answer to “who gets permission?” is therefore site-specific: the people and services admitted by the mine’s policy, not Tether’s project participants or an AI model by itself.

What did Paolo Ardoino and Tether announce?

On October 24, 2026, Tether said 15 industry participants had committed to build and maintain integrations for MDK. The group is made up of mining companies, ASIC manufacturers, pool operators and infrastructure specialists: Tether, 2026, ACME Swisstech, Bitdeer, BITMAIN, Canaan, Elektron Energy, EMCD, F2Pool, Foundry Digital, Heatbit, Luxor Technology, MicroBT, OCEAN, Proto, SpiderPool and Stratum V2.

Each participant is expected to maintain a Worker, a translation layer that exposes selected functions from its hardware, pool or site system through MDK’s common language. The participant decides which functions are exposed. Tether says its QVAC mining agent is already running on MDK as an early demonstration, but the announcement gives no participating-fleet capacity, Bitcoin-hashrate share, measured energy savings or measured cost savings.

Tether said MDK would reach version 0.11 at the October 23–24 Plan ₿ Forum and targeted a stable 1.0 release by the end of 2026. That is a schedule target, not evidence that version 1.0 has shipped.

Can an MDK agent reboot a Bitcoin miner?

Yes, if the site has exposed that action and the request passes its approval and routing controls. The v0.11 reference site demonstrates a device-action tool with two example writes:

  • Reboot a named device.
  • Change its power mode to low, normal, high or sleep, subject to the modes that device supports.

The tool is marked as a write. When the agent loop reaches a write that requires approval, it emits a pending-approval event and pauses. A rejection blocks the call. The Gateway plugin documents a default two-minute approval window; if nobody answers, the request resolves to rejection.

Who approves an equipment command?

The approval identity configured by the mine approves it, not the model that generated the proposal. In the v0.11 plugin, sessions and approvals are bound to the identity that created them.

Why a shared operator is a weak boundary

If no user identity is supplied, the request uses a shared local operator. The interface still pauses, but it cannot distinguish one human from another. A mine that wants accountable approvals must connect verified users and role policy to the approval surface, then retain records showing who approved which action and when.

What a backend key proves

The v0.11 blueprint separates the agent’s route from the person behind it. Direct command.request calls have no Kernel-side permission check. action.push relies on permissions supplied by an admitted backend caller. A key that admits a backend process to the Kernel identifies that process; it does not identify the human who asked for the change. Human identity therefore has to be carried by a separate, enforced policy rather than inferred from the process key.

Where can a command be blocked or accepted?

There are several distinct boundaries, and each can produce a different answer to “who may act?”

  1. Agent policy: the application or AI decides whether to propose a write.
  2. Approval policy: a configured user or role accepts, rejects or ignores the pending request.
  3. Kernel admission: the backend process must be admitted to the Kernel for routes that require it.
  4. Worker network access: the process must be able to reach the Worker and address its public key.
  5. Device capability: the Worker can expose only functions implemented by the underlying hardware or system.

The tagged v0.11 Worker network interface is an important boundary. The cited implementation dispatches requests without checking the caller’s key, so a peer that can reach a Worker and address its public key may submit commands. That describes the implementation and its network assumptions; it does not prove that any named mine is exposed. A mine’s segmentation, firewall rules and installation determine whether that route is reachable.

Does the deployed version change the security answer?

Yes. Operators must pin the exact MDK code and configuration instead of treating “v0.11” as one security profile. A repository comparison maps v0.11.0 to commit fae8fbce052a and a checked main snapshot to 35c144f240f0.

Implementation Worker caller check What it means
Tagged v0.11.0 (fae8fbce052a) No caller-key check at the Worker RPC entry point Network reachability and the addressed Worker key can be decisive.
Cited main snapshot (35c144f240f0) Admitted caller keys required unless allowAll is enabled; connection firewall and per-request peer-key check are present Caller admission is stronger, but an unsafe allowAll setting changes the boundary.

Revocation restricts later requests on existing connections; it does not prove that work already dispatched to a device has been cancelled. A v0.12-labelled changelog also describes Kernel roles for reading, writing and administration, opt-in MCP write tools, and declared verification of device state. The published security guide retrieved on October 24 still described Workers without caller allowlists, so documentation must be matched to the exact deployed code.

Does Tether control which mine can issue commands?

No. MDK project governance and machine authority are separate. The project’s governance gives the core team final project authority, the Lead Maintainer final technical authority over merges, architecture and release planning, and the Community Manager final authority over strategic direction and the roadmap. An integration commitment does not grant a participant permission to operate another company’s mine. Conversely, release authority does not grant permission to issue commands inside a site.

How does MOS fit into the control stack?

Tether announced MOS on February 2, 2026 as a production-ready operating system for managing, monitoring and automating Bitcoin-mining infrastructure. It treats machines, energy systems, containers and other infrastructure as controllable workers, and Tether says it can scale to monitor hundreds of thousands of mining devices. The accompanying Mining SDK is intended to provide reusable workers, APIs and UI tooling.

Those announcements describe an architecture and claimed scale, not proof that a particular mine has enabled autonomous writes. MOS can supply a management layer, while MDK supplies a common integration language; the mine still has to decide which identities, routes and approvals are active.

Does local AI solve the permission problem?

No. Local execution can improve privacy and resilience, but it does not grant authority. In a QVAC/Tether recap of his October 7 AMA, Ardoino argued that AI should be local first because ownership, privacy, resilience and control matter. The recap quotes him calling local-first AI “one of the most important tech movements of the last 100 years” and uses his phrase, “not your AI, not your intelligence.”

A model running on site, a hosted model endpoint, a backend admission key, a Worker network route and a human approval identity are separate configuration choices. A local model with an over-permissive key can have more operational reach than a hosted model with tightly scoped, human-approved actions.

What should a mine verify before enabling AI writes?

Use this checklist during deployment and after every upgrade:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the exact MDK or MOS version and pinned commit.
  • List every Worker function exposed, including whether it can reboot, change power or alter pool settings.
  • Map each write to named users or roles; avoid a shared operator when individual accountability is required.
  • Confirm whether backend calls use command.request or action.push, and document the associated checks.
  • Require admitted caller keys, keep allowAll disabled unless there is a documented exception, and restrict Worker network reachability.
  • Test the approval timeout and verify that an unanswered request is rejected.
  • Log the proposed action, approver, key, target device, result and timestamp.
  • Verify resulting device state rather than assuming that a successful request means the miner changed state.
  • Define how keys are revoked and what happens to commands already in flight.

What is established—and what is not?

Established facts are that 15 participants announced MDK integration commitments, Workers expose only the functions their maintainers choose, and the v0.11 reference flow can pause writes for approval. The effective permission boundary depends on identity setup, code version, network exposure and site policy.

Not established are a fleet-wide hashrate share, a measured efficiency gain, a universal security level for every MDK deployment or proof that any particular operator has enabled autonomous equipment commands. Treat “AI-run mining” as a control-stack capability, not as evidence that an AI independently owns a mine’s authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Bitcoin mine let an AI run without a human online?

It can automate actions if the mine configures a policy that does not require per-action approval, but that removes a human checkpoint rather than creating a new form of authorization. Operators should define narrow action scopes, emergency shutdown rules and independent monitoring before allowing unattended writes.

What happens when an approval request times out?

In the v0.11 Gateway documentation, the default two-minute window ends in rejection when nobody answers. A deployment can still add its own queueing or escalation behavior, so operators should test the actual timeout path instead of assuming every installation uses the default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can revoking a key stop a miner command already sent?

Revocation limits subsequent requests on existing connections, but it does not demonstrate cancellation of work that has already been dispatched. Safe shutdown procedures therefore need device-side controls and an out-of-band emergency path.

How should two mining sites be compared for AI safety?

Compare their approver identities, backend and Worker caller authentication, model location, device-state verification, pinned software commit and update-review process. Claimed autonomy is not a useful comparison metric unless those permission boundaries are documented.
