The Panasonic NR-CY54BGSAU is a 547-litre French-door refrigerator with flexible fresh-food storage, a bottom freezer and Panasonic’s ECONAVI inverter controls. It can be a good used or refurbished buy when the price reflects its age and the appliance is complete, clean and supported by a credible seller. The main risk is availability: Panasonic’s archive still documents the model, but Consumer NZ labels it discontinued, and prominent refurbished stock is sold out. Before paying, verify the 770 × 743 × 1,714 mm footprint, delivery access, actual condition, energy label, warranty terms and replacement-part availability. Do not pay a premium simply for the original 12-year compressor promise; Panasonic qualified that warranty as covering the compressor part only.
Is the Panasonic NR-CY54BGSAU worth buying used?
It is worth considering when you need a large French-door layout and find a well-maintained unit at a substantial discount. Its strongest advantages are 445 litres of stated storage capacity, a dedicated high-humidity vegetable case, separate freezer cases and four temperature-management zones. Its purchase case is weaker if the seller cannot demonstrate cooling performance, supply all bins and shelves, or explain who will handle a warranty claim.
This is not a current mainstream model. Consumer NZ identifies the NR-CY54BGSAU as a “Discontinued model” in a record last updated 22 March 2021. That changes the buying decision: you are usually assessing old stock, a refurbished refrigerator or a private used listing rather than choosing a model with guaranteed ongoing retail distribution. A low price can compensate for that uncertainty; a near-new price generally cannot.

What are the NR-CY54BGSAU’s dimensions, capacity and basic specifications?
Panasonic lists external dimensions of 770 mm wide, 743 mm deep and 1,714 mm high. The operating instructions report 547 litres of gross capacity but 445 litres of storage capacity under AS/NZS 4475. The distinction matters: gross volume includes spaces that cannot all be used for food, while storage capacity is the more practical figure when comparing refrigerators.
| Specification | NR-CY54BGSAU value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | French doors over a bottom freezer | Frequently opened fresh-food compartment at eye level; freezer drawers below |
| Gross capacity | 547 L | Panasonic archive and operating instructions |
| Storage capacity | 445 L | Operating instructions, measured under AS/NZS 4475 |
| Refrigerator gross capacity | 394 L | Operating instructions |
| Freezer gross capacity | 153 L | Operating instructions |
| External width | 770 mm | Leave additional room if your installation requires door swing or service access |
| External depth | 743 mm | Compare with cabinet depth and the path into the kitchen |
| External height | 1,714 mm | Measure under cabinets, bulkheads and stair landings |
| Net weight | 89 kg | Operating-instructions figure; plan a two-person or professional move |
| Refrigerant | R600a | Use a technician familiar with this refrigerant for sealed-system work |
| Cooling system | Non-frost | Designed to avoid routine manual defrosting |
Panasonic’s archive calls the appliance 547.0 L, whereas the manual rounds the same gross figure to 547 L. Use the 445 L storage figure when deciding whether it will replace your present refrigerator. A large nominal capacity does not guarantee that a tall container, wide platter or frozen-food package will fit; door bins, shelves and drawer geometry still determine usable space.
How is the interior arranged?
The cabinet uses a French-door refrigerator compartment above a bottom freezer. Panasonic specifies a dedicated vegetable case and separate freezer cases, so the layout is more segmented than a single large freezer drawer. That segmentation can help organize food, but it also means checking that every drawer, divider and bin is included when buying used.
Four temperature zones
Panasonic describes four zones for fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, freezing and general refrigeration. The zones are intended to let different food categories receive more appropriate conditions instead of sharing one undifferentiated compartment. The documentation describes the concept and placement; it does not provide an independent test of how consistently each zone holds temperature in a particular used unit.
Fresh Safe vegetable case
The Fresh Safe case is specified at approximately 6 °C and approximately 90% humidity. Those figures are design targets from Panasonic, not a promise that an older refrigerator will maintain them without checking seals, sensors and airflow. Inspect the case for cracks, a missing lid or a warped seal, because damage can reduce the value of the feature even when the compressor runs normally.
Shelves and removable parts
Panasonic says the tempered-glass shelves can support up to 100 kg and can be removed for washing. The 100 kg figure is a manufacturer specification for the shelves; it is not permission to overload door racks or drawers. Confirm that shelves, crisper covers, freezer baskets, ice components and the cold-air filter are present before purchase. Missing parts may be difficult or expensive to source for a discontinued model.

Does ECONAVI really reduce electricity use?
ECONAVI combines door, light, room-temperature and internal-temperature sensors with inverter compressor control. The system varies compressor speed rather than operating only at a fixed rate. Panasonic claims this combination can save up to 40% in electricity costs, but that is a manufacturer claim and is not independently verified in the accessible documentation.

Treat ECONAVI as a control strategy, not as a guaranteed percentage reduction.
A refurbished Grays listing reported forecast energy consumption of 455 kWh and a three-star rating. Those figures describe that listing, not every NR-CY54BGSAU. If you are evaluating a specific appliance, photograph its energy label and compare the stated annual consumption, test standard and market region. Do not transfer the 455 kWh figure to a unit with a different label, voltage configuration or condition.
What do Ag Clean and the cooling claims mean?
Ag Clean is an installed filter in the cold-air outlet. Panasonic states that silver has a powerful antibacterial effect, deactivating 99.9% of mould and bacteria inside the refrigerator. The statement is Panasonic’s claim and cites Boken Quality Evaluation Institute test report No. 20215058561-1.
The cited percentage should not be read as a guarantee that every surface, food item or used appliance is free of microorganisms. It refers to the manufacturer’s stated test result for the filter system. The filter must also be present and in serviceable condition. Ask the seller to show the filter location and check for damage, heavy odour or evidence that the interior has been neglected.
“Non-frost” cooling means the design is intended to prevent routine frost build-up. It does not eliminate the need to clean spills, maintain door seals or obtain professional service if the appliance develops abnormal icing, temperature swings or water leaks.

Will a 770 mm refrigerator fit your kitchen and delivery route?
Measure the installation opening and the entire delivery path before paying. The published 770 mm width, 743 mm depth and 1,714 mm height are the appliance dimensions; they do not tell you how much clearance a particular kitchen, doorway or lift requires for turning and opening the doors.
- Measure the cabinet opening. Record width at the top, middle and bottom, depth to the wall or countertop edge, and height beneath any cabinet or bulkhead.
- Map the route. Measure the front door, hallway, stairwell, lift and kitchen entrance. Include the narrowest point after handrails, trim and door stops are considered.
- Check turning space. A refrigerator that passes straight through a doorway may still fail at a right-angle turn. Ask the mover whether doors or handles must be removed and whether the seller permits that work.
- Plan door operation. Confirm that both French doors and the freezer can open far enough to remove shelves and drawers. Wall, island or adjacent-cabinet interference can make the nominal footprint unsuitable.
- Arrange safe handling. The manual’s 89 kg net weight calls for suitable equipment and trained movers. Keep the appliance upright whenever possible and follow the carrier’s instructions for settling time before power-up.
Panasonic’s published dimensions do not state a universal rear, side or top clearance for every installation. Use the installation instructions supplied with the individual unit, or obtain the manufacturer’s guidance for your region, rather than guessing from the cabinet size alone.
What should you inspect on a used or refurbished unit?
Condition checks are more important here than on a current model with abundant replacement stock. Ask for photographs and a powered demonstration, preferably after the refrigerator has reached operating temperature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Cooling: Verify that the refrigerator and freezer both become cold, that temperatures remain stable after the doors are opened repeatedly, and that there is no unusual compressor noise or persistent alarm.
- Door seals: Inspect every gasket for tears, flattening, mould or gaps. A weak seal can undermine temperature control and energy performance.
- Interior completeness: Count tempered-glass shelves, door bins, crisper parts, vegetable-case covers, freezer baskets, dividers and the Ag Clean filter against the operating instructions.
- Cabinet and doors: Look for dents, corrosion, cracked plastic, hinge sag and doors that do not align. Cosmetic damage may be acceptable; damage that prevents a seal from closing is not.
- Water and odour: Check beneath drawers and around the rear for leaks, staining or a persistent smell that cleaning will not remove.
- Electrical and label information: Photograph the rating plate and energy label. Confirm voltage, frequency, model suffix and the annual-consumption figure for your market.
- Transport history: Ask whether the unit was stored in a humid space, transported on its side, repaired or exposed to flooding. A seller who cannot answer basic history questions increases your risk.
- Included paperwork: Request the operating instructions, purchase receipt, refurbishment invoice and written warranty terms. Verbal promises are difficult to enforce after collection.
What warranty and parts support remain?
Panasonic states that its refrigerator compressor carries a 12-year warranty, with the explicit qualification “12 Year Warranty covers compressor part only.” The wording does not establish coverage for labour, transport, electronics, fans, seals, shelves or other components. It also does not establish that the promise transfers automatically to a second owner or a refurbished purchase.
Ask the seller to identify the warranty issuer, territory, start date, exclusions, proof-of-purchase requirement and process for an out-of-warranty repair. A three-month seller warranty can be more useful in practice than a long historical compressor promise if the seller will actually collect, diagnose and repair the refrigerator.
Because the model is discontinued, confirm parts availability before purchase. Ask specifically about door gaskets, shelves, drawer covers, sensors, control boards, fans and the Ag Clean filter. Do not assume that a visually similar part fits; obtain a part number from the model’s documentation or rating plate and get written confirmation from the supplier.

What did the NR-CY54BGSAU cost, and is it still available?
Consumer NZ listed a price of NZ$3,799 in its 22 March 2021 record, while labeling the model discontinued. That is a historical reference, not a current market price or a recommendation to pay the same amount today.
A Grays refurbished listing described a 547 L unit with a three-month Grays-managed warranty. It showed an RRP of A$2,499 as of October 2017 and an advertised price of A$749, but that listing is now sold out. The listing also reported the 455 kWh forecast consumption and three-star rating discussed above. These figures illustrate how dramatically used pricing can differ from original retail positioning; they do not establish the value or condition of another seller’s appliance.
Current availability may consist of private listings, warehouse returns, old stock or refurbished inventory. Confirm that the advertised unit actually exists, inspect recent photographs, and get delivery and removal charges in writing. A low headline price can become expensive once stairs, difficult access, missing shelves or disposal of your old refrigerator are added.
How should you compare it with a current refrigerator?
Compare the NR-CY54BGSAU with current models on practical ownership evidence rather than capacity marketing alone. The following framework keeps the comparison fair when one appliance is discontinued and the other has a current warranty.
| Comparison question | What to check on the Panasonic | What to demand from a current alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Will it fit? | 770 × 743 × 1,714 mm plus door and delivery clearance | Published external dimensions, opening angles and installation clearances |
| How much food fits? | 445 L storage; 394 L refrigerator gross and 153 L freezer gross | Usable or storage capacity, not gross capacity alone |
| Can food be separated? | Four described zones and a Fresh Safe case targeted at about 6 °C and 90% humidity | Documented drawers, temperature settings and independent temperature evidence where available |
| What will it consume? | 455 kWh and three stars only on one refurbished listing; ECONAVI savings claim is manufacturer-provided | Energy-label consumption for the exact model and market |
| Who supports it? | Discontinued status; seller warranty and parts availability must be confirmed | Current manufacturer warranty, service network and parts policy |
| What is the delivered cost? | Used price plus inspection, transport, installation and possible parts | Delivered price, installation, old-appliance removal and warranty terms |
A current refrigerator may offer fewer advertised features yet be the safer purchase if its usable capacity is similar and parts support is clear. Conversely, a good NR-CY54BGSAU can deliver more storage flexibility for much less money when the seller stands behind it and the appliance passes inspection.

It suits buyers who:
- Need a large fresh-food compartment and prefer French-door access.
- Value separate vegetable, meat-and-fish, refrigeration and freezer organization.
- Can verify dimensions, delivery access and the complete accessory set.
- Are comfortable evaluating a discontinued appliance and negotiating a price that reflects support risk.
- Receive a meaningful written warranty from a reputable refurbisher or retailer.
It is a poor choice when:
- The unit is incomplete, cannot be demonstrated cold, or has damaged seals and unexplained temperature problems.
- The seller asks close to current-refrigerator pricing without offering comparable warranty or parts support.
- Your route cannot accommodate a 770 mm-wide, 89 kg appliance safely.
- You need guaranteed long-term access to shelves, electronic controls or specialist service.
- The only evidence of efficiency is the “up to 40%” ECONAVI claim, with no energy label for the actual unit.
What is the safest way to complete the purchase?
Use a written, model-specific checklist before money changes hands. This sequence reduces the most common risks with old or refurbished refrigeration.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Identify the exact unit. Photograph the model and serial labels, not just the seller’s advertisement title.
- Confirm capacity and fit. Compare the 770 × 743 × 1,714 mm dimensions with your opening and delivery measurements.
- Request a cold demonstration. Have the seller show both compartments operating, the lights and controls working, and the doors sealing evenly.
- Inventory accessories. Match every shelf, bin, drawer, cover and filter to the operating instructions.
- Record energy evidence. Photograph the unit’s energy label and note its stated annual consumption and star rating.
- Get warranty terms in writing. Separate compressor-part coverage from labour and from the seller’s own repair or refund obligations.
- Check parts before paying. Obtain availability and prices for likely wear items and any missing component.
- Price delivery realistically. Include stairs, difficult turns, installation, old-appliance removal and the possibility of a replacement gasket or shelf.
- Keep records. Save the advertisement, receipt, photographs, serial number and all messages in case a warranty dispute arises.
The final decision should be conditional, not automatic: buy only when the unit is complete, demonstrably cold, easy to deliver, properly documented and priced below the risk-adjusted cost of a supported current refrigerator.
What is the final verdict on the Panasonic NR-CY54BGSAU?
The NR-CY54BGSAU remains attractive for its size, French-door ergonomics, flexible food zones and dedicated high-humidity vegetable storage. Those benefits can justify a used purchase, particularly when the refrigerator is clean, complete and covered by a real seller warranty.
Discontinuation changes the threshold for saying yes. Verify the appliance rather than relying on the original brochure, treat energy and hygiene percentages as manufacturer claims, and regard the 12-year compressor statement as part-only coverage until the responsible warranty provider confirms otherwise. A fairly priced, well-supported example is sensible; unsupported or incomplete stock is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 12-year Panasonic compressor warranty include labour?
Panasonic’s qualification says the 12-year warranty covers the compressor part only. The available documentation does not establish labour, transport or other-component coverage, so obtain those terms from the warranty provider before relying on the figure.
How can I tell whether a used unit’s 445-litre capacity is enough?
Use the 445-litre storage figure as the comparison baseline, then examine the actual shelf, drawer and door-bin layout. Gross capacity numbers include spaces that are not all available for food, so compare the dimensions of the containers and platters you routinely store.
Are replacement shelves and filters guaranteed to be available?
No. The model is discontinued, and availability can vary by country and component. Ask for part numbers and written confirmation from a supplier before buying a unit with missing shelves, drawers or the Ag Clean filter.
Can I rely on the advertised 455 kWh energy figure?
Only for the specific refurbished listing that reported it, and even there it was forecast consumption. Verify the energy label on the exact refrigerator you are buying because condition, market version and installation affect real-world use.
