The Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU is a large Australian-market bottom-mount refrigerator with useful organization and a generous 554 L capacity, but it is now discontinued and its real-world cooling and noise performance are inconsistent in owner reports. It can be a sensible used purchase only when the individual appliance passes a temperature, seal and noise check—especially if it will operate in a hot, humid climate. Panasonic’s published 463 kWh/year figure and three-star Australian rating describe the 2012 model’s label, not a current US efficiency certification or a guarantee of household results.
Is the Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU any good?
It is a well-equipped refrigerator whose strongest case is storage capacity and internal layout, not proven performance in every climate. ProductReview.com.au records 92 reviews averaging 3.7/5; owners rate the internal layout 4.0/5 but noise only 3.0/5. Those scores suggest a practical interior with a noticeable spread in satisfaction between units and households.
The model is discontinued, so you are assessing a particular used appliance rather than choosing a current Panasonic product with factory support. One owner in Far North Queensland reported that the refrigerator side could not get below 10 °C on hot, humid days and that the left exterior side became very hot. That is a single field report, not a controlled test or a failure-rate statistic, but it is important enough to make a measured temperature check non-negotiable.

What are the Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU’s specifications?
Panasonic Australia’s 2012 brochure identifies the NR-BY552XSAU as a two-door, bottom-mount, frost-free refrigerator using R600a refrigerant. The figures below are Australian-market specifications and should not be treated as a current specification for another regional variant.

| Specification | Published value | What it means when buying used |
|---|---|---|
| Total capacity | 554 L | Large family-sized storage; verify that shelves and drawers are present. |
| Refrigerator compartment | 400 L | The main fresh-food area; measure actual usable space if you store tall containers. |
| Freezer compartment | 154 L | Drawer-style freezer capacity; inspect runners and the twist ice tray. |
| External width | 775 mm | Leave clearance for doors and ventilation, not just the cabinet width. |
| External depth | 745 mm | Check hallway, doorway and bench clearances before transport. |
| External height | 1,714 mm | Include hinge and overhead clearance when planning installation. |
| Refrigerant | R600a | Service requires a technician equipped and authorised to handle this refrigerant. |
| Defrost system | Frost free | No routine manual defrosting, but airflow and seals still need maintenance. |
| Energy label | Three stars; 463 kWh/year | Australian label data from the brochure; not a current US Energy Star claim. |
The 775 × 745 mm footprint is substantial. Measure the complete route into the kitchen, including door leaves, lift openings, stair turns and the space needed to open both refrigerator doors and the lower freezer drawer. A cabinet that physically fits can still be unusable if a wall prevents the drawer from extending.
Which features does the NR-BY552XSAU provide?
Panasonic’s feature list is broad for a model from this generation, but a feature name does not prove that a used unit still performs correctly. Check each control and compartment rather than assuming that the brochure equipment is intact.
Inverter motor and ECONAVI control
The inverter motor is designed to vary compressor operation instead of relying only on fixed-speed cycling. ECONAVI is Panasonic’s energy-control system. In a used refrigerator, listen for smooth changes in compressor speed and confirm that the cabinet actually reaches and holds a safe temperature; a control label cannot compensate for a weak compressor, blocked airflow or a poor door seal.

Ag Clean is listed as an antibacterial and deodorising function. It may help with odour control, but it does not replace cleaning spills, washing shelves or discarding spoiled food. Ask the seller whether the interior has been cleaned and whether any unusual smell returns after the doors remain closed for several hours.
VitaminSafe, surround cooling and chilled case
The VitaminSafe compartment, surround-cooling design and chilled case are intended to give different storage zones. Inspect drawer fronts, rails and seals for cracks, warping or missing clips. A broken drawer can reduce the practical value of the advertised capacity even when the compressor is healthy.
Lighting, shelves and door storage
LED lighting, adjustable shelves and large bottle bins make the interior flexible. Move every adjustable shelf through its available positions and check that glass is not chipped. Load the door bins with a few bottles during inspection to reveal sagging, loose retainers or a door that no longer closes squarely.

Freezer and control features
The freezer is a drawer design with a twist ice tray and a quick-freezing function. Test the drawer for binding and confirm that the ice tray turns without excessive force. Operate the door control panel and check that temperature or mode changes are accepted; an unresponsive panel can indicate a control-board problem that is harder to source than a gasket.
Fingerprint-resistant finish
The fingerprint-resistant exterior is cosmetic rather than a cooling feature. Examine the sides and door edges for dents that could interfere with alignment, and look for corrosion around the lower door or base.
Does it cool reliably in hot weather?
There is no independently published laboratory performance result or failure-rate study for this model in the available material. The strongest warning is a single owner report from Far North Queensland stating that the refrigerator side stayed above 10 °C during hot, humid days and that the left side felt hot. Treat that report as a reason to test the individual unit, not as proof that every NR-BY552XSAU fails in heat.
How to test a used unit before paying
- Start with the refrigerator at room temperature. Ask the seller not to pre-chill it immediately before you arrive; a short demonstration can hide a problem that appears after several hours.
- Place independent thermometers in both compartments. Put one in a glass of water on the middle refrigerator shelf and another among frozen goods. Do not rely on the display alone.
- Allow a full pull-down period. Keep the doors closed for several hours, ideally overnight if the seller permits. Record the starting room temperature, the readings and the time.
- Repeat under a realistic load. Add bottles or containers so the test reflects household use, while keeping air vents clear. A refrigerator that cools empty but warms when loaded may have marginal airflow or compressor capacity.
- Check temperature recovery. Open the refrigerator several times as you would during a meal and watch how quickly the reading returns to its previous level.
- Inspect hot spots and airflow. Warmth at the compressor area can be normal, but an unusually hot side combined with poor cooling, constant running or a burning smell requires professional diagnosis.
- Record the result in writing. If the seller will not allow a meaningful test or refuses a return arrangement, price the appliance as a repair gamble—or walk away.
Food-safety targets depend on local guidance, so use your jurisdiction’s recommended refrigerator and freezer temperatures when interpreting the thermometer. The key question is stability: a brief cold reading is less useful than several readings that remain in the safe range through a warm-day cycle.
How noisy is the Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU?
Noise satisfaction is mixed. ProductReview.com.au gives the model 3.0/5 for noise, substantially below its 4.0/5 internal-layout score. No verified decibel measurement was published, so a numerical noise promise would be misleading.

During an inspection, listen from the front, both sides and the rear while the compressor starts, runs and stops. Inverter compressors can change pitch as they vary speed; that is different from a repeated hard click, metallic rattle, fan scraping or vibration transmitted through the floor. Check whether the cabinet rocks on its feet and whether bottles or shelves buzz when the compressor runs. A quiet showroom moment proves little if the refrigerator has not completed a full cooling cycle.

How much electricity does it use?
The Australian brochure lists 463 kWh per year and a three-star energy rating. Those numbers are label results for the Australian-market model and test standard in use for that publication; they are not a current US Energy Star certification and do not predict the exact bill in every home.
To estimate running cost, multiply 463 kWh by your electricity tariff, then compare that estimate with current refrigerators using the same local labeling method. For example, at a tariff of A$0.30 per kWh, the label figure would correspond to about A$138.90 per year before differences in climate, door opening, ventilation, thermostat setting and appliance condition. That calculation is an illustration, not a measured bill for this model.
A used unit can consume more than its label suggests if the door gasket leaks, the condenser cannot shed heat, the freezer drawer is misaligned or the compressor runs continuously. Record a plug-in energy meter over several days if operating cost matters, and compare the result only with appliances measured under comparable conditions.

What did the NR-BY552XSAU cost, and what is a fair used price?
Grays Australia’s archived listing gives an original retail price of A$2,199 for a new product in August 2016 and shows a refurbished price of A$999. That listing is sold out and required an Australian shipping address. There is no verified current US new-product price in the available sources.
Those historical figures are reference points, not today’s market value. A fair used price depends on cooling performance, cosmetic condition, transport difficulty, remaining parts support and the cost of any immediate repair. A refrigerator that needs a gasket, drawer or technician visit can quickly erase the apparent saving over a newer appliance with a warranty.
A practical used-price worksheet
- Start with the local asking price for comparable large bottom-mount refrigerators, not the 2016 RRP alone.
- Subtract the cost of any confirmed parts, delivery, stairs, removal or electrical work.
- Assign a risk discount when the seller cannot provide a cold-temperature history or a return period.
- Pay more only for evidence: stable measured temperatures, intact shelves and drawers, quiet operation and a clean seal.
- Keep a repair reserve because a discontinued appliance can require specialist diagnosis even when a small part is available.
Can you still get replacement parts?
Model-specific gaskets are documented by Australian spare-parts suppliers, which makes exact-part searches more practical than buying a generic accessory. Prices and inventory can change, and both examples below are Australian listings.

| Part | Supplier listing | Price shown | Dispatch information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator door gasket, part 1766966 | BigWarehouse Spares | A$81.18 including GST | Estimated one to two weeks on the page checked. |

Confirm the complete model code, door position and gasket number before ordering. Photograph the old part, measure its profile and compare mounting details with the supplier’s compatibility information. A gasket price does not include fitting, shipping or diagnosis of a warped door; if the cabinet or hinge is misaligned, a new seal alone may not cure the leak.
For compressors, control boards, fans and refrigerant work, ask a local appliance technician whether the part can still be sourced and whether the repair is economical. Because the refrigerator is discontinued, service access may vary sharply by Australian state or by country.
What should you inspect before buying a used one?
Use this inspection in order, because a clean exterior can distract from expensive mechanical faults.
1. Verify identity and history
- Photograph the model and serial labels and confirm that the appliance is actually an NR-BY552XSAU.
- Ask when it was last operating, why it was removed and whether it has had compressor, fan or control repairs.
- Request proof of the seller’s return terms in writing.
2. Check the cabinet and doors
- Look for cabinet dents, rust, water staining and damage around the bottom corners.
- Open each door slowly; it should move smoothly without scraping.
- Close the doors on a sheet of paper at several points. Weak resistance can indicate a damaged or hardened gasket.
- Confirm that the refrigerator sits level and that the doors align.
3. Examine the interior
- Inspect every glass shelf, bottle bin, drawer front, rail and retaining clip.
- Check for cracks, cloudy plastic, mould or persistent odour.
- Make sure vents are not blocked by ice, packaging or a displaced panel.
4. Test operation
- Run the temperature test described above rather than accepting a quick demonstration.
- Listen through a complete compressor cycle and check for fan scraping, repeated clicking or excessive vibration.
- Operate the control panel, quick-freezing mode, interior lights and ice tray.
- Confirm that the freezer drawer closes fully and that its seal contacts evenly.
5. Plan delivery and installation
- Measure the route and arrange enough people or equipment for a 1,714 mm-tall appliance.
- Keep the refrigerator upright as far as practical during transport and follow the technician or manufacturer’s settling guidance before powering it on.
- Leave the ventilation clearance specified for the installation and avoid placing it beside a major heat source.
How should you compare this refrigerator with another model?
Compare measured ownership factors, not just capacity or feature names. The following framework prevents a large but unreliable refrigerator from looking like a bargain.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Usable capacity and footprint | Does it fit the room and hold the items you actually store? | Internal measurements, drawer condition and door-opening clearance. |
| Cooling stability | Does it hold safe temperatures in your climate and recover after door openings? | Independent thermometer readings over several hours or days. |
| Noise | Will compressor and fan sounds be acceptable near living areas? | Listening test from several positions during a full cycle. |
| Energy use | Are the figures based on the same local standard and year? | Comparable kWh labeling or plug-in meter readings. |
| Parts and service | Can you obtain seals, controls and qualified labor locally? | Exact model compatibility checks and technician confirmation. |
| Total used cost | What will purchase, delivery, repairs and disposal cost together? | Written quotes and a repair reserve, not just the seller’s asking price. |
The NR-BY552XSAU’s published capacity and feature list may beat a smaller replacement, while a newer model may offer clearer parts support or a current energy label. Make the decision with the same thermometer, noise check and total-cost worksheet for both appliances.
Who should buy the NR-BY552XSAU, and who should avoid it?
It may suit you if:
- You need a large bottom-mount refrigerator and have measured space for its 775 × 745 × 1,714 mm dimensions.
- You are in Australia or another market where a technician and model-compatible parts can be reached.
- The specific unit reaches stable temperatures, has intact seals and drawers, and is priced with its discontinued status in mind.
- You value flexible shelves, large door bins and a substantial refrigerator compartment.
Look elsewhere if:
- You need guaranteed operation in a very hot, humid environment but cannot test the refrigerator under those conditions.
- You require a current warranty, current US availability or a modern regional energy certification.
- The seller refuses a meaningful cooling test, the compressor runs constantly, or the cabinet shows seal and alignment problems.
- Transport, installation and a possible repair would bring the total cost close to a newer appliance.
What is the bottom-line verdict?
The NR-BY552XSAU is neither an automatic bargain nor a model to reject solely because it is old. Its 554 L layout, inverter system, ECONAVI controls and frost-free design remain useful, and replacement gaskets are still listed in Australia. However, the discontinued status, mixed noise feedback and one serious hot-weather cooling complaint mean that the individual unit matters more than the brochure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the three-star rating directly comparable with a new refrigerator’s label?
Not necessarily. Energy-label test methods and star scales can change by country and over time, so compare the stated kWh figure only with products tested under the same jurisdiction’s current standard. A plug-in meter on the actual used appliance is the most relevant check for your home.
What should I do if the refrigerator is cold but the freezer drawer will not close?
Do not ignore the drawer problem: an incomplete seal can waste energy and destabilize both compartments. Remove the drawer, inspect the runners and ice buildup, then check whether the cabinet is level; if alignment is still wrong, obtain a repair estimate before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
Are generic replacement door seals safe to use?
Only if the profile, dimensions and mounting method match exactly. An inexpensive seal that does not sit squarely can leak air, so prefer a part explicitly identified for the NR-BY552XSAU and retain the original until the replacement has been fitted and tested.
Does frost-free operation eliminate all maintenance?
No. Frost-free systems still depend on clear vents, clean interior surfaces, intact seals and unobstructed heat rejection around the cabinet. Persistent ice, odour, overheating or long compressor run times calls for diagnosis rather than simply changing the temperature setting.
