First, the platform caveat: Winds of Viridia is announced for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam—not the original Nintendo Switch. Its free demo is available now on the Switch 2 eShop and Steam, and the full game is planned for Q1 2027. If you have an original Switch, the closest available stand-ins are Hollow Knight for exploration, bosses and composer Christopher Larkin’s music; TUNIC for Zelda-like secrets; and Ori and the Will of the Wisps for lush scenery and fluid movement.

There is no single perfect substitute: the announced game combines a seamless 3D wilderness, agile combat, traversal and huge boss encounters. These recommendations match different parts of that mix, so the best choice depends on what caught your attention in the trailer.

What is Winds of Viridia, and when can you play it?

Winds of Viridia is a handcrafted open-world action-adventure from Australia-based studio Shark Jump, with Matt Trobbiani also listed as a developer on Steam. It was revealed at Nintendo Indie World on October 28, 2026. The game is planned for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam; no listing in the available announcement coverage names the original Switch.

Steam gives the release window as Q1 2027, meaning January through March, but no exact launch day or price has been announced. The free demo is available now on Steam and the Switch 2 eShop. The full game is not yet available.

The official Steam description places the adventure in the valley of the towering Grantree. You explore forgotten lands, discover why their creatures have gone mad, find relics and secrets, and face formidable bosses. The showcase describes the protagonist as a child awakened from a seed, setting out to restore balance to the once-great civilization of Viridia.

Steam’s feature list points to a particular blend of play: rolling, sliding, flipping and grappling through a continuous world; using strange plants to extend jumps and reach; fighting dozens of frenzied creatures; and combining relics as totems to customize your playstyle. A companion Mothbug helps with exploration and combat, while gigantic beasts, living statues and guardians serve as major boss encounters. The score is by Kevin Penkin and Christopher Larkin.

That mix explains why the recommendations below span several genres. No released original-Switch indie exactly reproduces a seamless 3D wilderness with agile beast fights. Instead, choose a game based on whether you want the music and bosses, Zelda-style discovery, nature and movement, or a harder combat challenge.

Which Switch indie is the closest overall match?

Hollow Knight is the best first pick for the overlap of Christopher Larkin’s music, exploration, secrets and boss fights. It is not a 3D open-world game, but it shares the clearest direct connection to Winds of Viridia: Larkin is composing both games.

In Hollow Knight, you explore the interconnected underground kingdom of Hallownest, uncover hidden paths and lore, and take on challenging bosses. Its hand-drawn insect world is darker and more enclosed than the nature-rich Grantree valley, and its combat is 2D rather than agile 3D. Still, if the trailer’s soundtrack, mysteries and large encounters are what you want more of, it is the strongest match to start with.

Hollow Knight is available on the original Switch as well as other platforms. A Switch 2 Edition has been available since February 5, 2026. Oruvai’s October 23, 2026 snapshot reports 97% positive from about 186,000 English-language Steam reviews; that is a Steam user-review snapshot, not a measure of Switch performance. Oruvai also lists its US Steam price as $14.99 on that date; regional prices and storefront pricing can differ.

For a bigger difficulty test, try Hollow Knight: Silksong. It launched September 4, 2025, and is available on Switch and Switch 2 as well as PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms. It keeps the hand-drawn exploration and boss focus but is the more demanding Team Cherry option. Oruvai’s October 23, 2026 snapshot reports 93% positive from about 147,000 English-language Steam reviews and a US Steam price of $19.99 on that date. A free Sea of Sorrow expansion was promised for 2026, but had no Steam release date as of October 23.

Both games are worth considering for their music, but neither should be mistaken for a preview of Winds of Viridia’s combat or camera. Larkin’s work is the unusual connecting thread; the announced game’s score also includes Kevin Penkin, known for Made in Abyss.

What should you play for Zelda-like secrets and discovery?

Pick TUNIC for a compact, secret-rich Zelda-like adventure, or Animal Well if discovery and puzzle-solving matter more to you than combat. Both are on Switch, but neither uses the seamless 3D wilderness announced for Winds of Viridia.

TUNIC is an isometric action-adventure starring a small fox. Its defining trick is an in-game manual whose pages conceal maps, techniques and clues; piecing those details together is part of the adventure. Combat includes dodges, blocks and parries, so it offers more direct fighting than a pure puzzle game. It is a good choice if the “Zelda” comparisons in the trailer make you want to search every corner and work out how a world fits together. Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 85 in its 2026 coverage.

Animal Well, by Billy Basso and published by Bigmode, is a dense interconnected labyrinth built around items, puzzles and secrets. It puts less emphasis on fighting than the other action-adventure picks here. If you want the satisfaction of finding a route or understanding an object’s purpose—not a steady stream of boss battles—it is the better fit. Oruvai’s October 23, 2026 snapshot reports 95% positive on Steam; Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 90.

Mina the Hollower is another top-down, Zelda-like option listed for Switch. Don Porque describes its structure as a “Zeldvania,” with tunnels and an overhead view, and cites a Metacritic score of 85 in 2026. It offers a closer camera-and-map analogy than a direct match for the promised 3D traversal. Because the available coverage identifies its platform and comparison but gives fewer details about its play, it is a secondary recommendation rather than the first pick in this group.

Which game best matches the nature, art and movement?

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is the best choice for flowing movement, emotional storytelling and a lush natural world, especially if you want a less punishing path. Press coverage has described Winds of Viridia as Ghibli-like in its art, but that is a critic’s comparison, not an official genre or style label.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a fluid, atmospheric forest platformer from Moon Studios. It is 2D rather than open-world 3D, but its expressive natural environments and movement make it a useful mood-and-traversal companion. Oruvai characterizes it as more forgiving than the Team Cherry games and reports 96% positive Steam reviews in its October 23, 2026 snapshot. It is available on Switch, PC and Xbox, but not PlayStation. Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 90 in 2026.

Celeste is the pick if what you want is precise movement rather than wilderness exploration. It is a demanding platformer with more than 700 screens and is available on Switch. Oruvai’s October 23 snapshot reports 97% positive Steam reviews. It is not a substitute for Winds of Viridia’s open-world format, but it is relevant to Nintendo’s October 2026 showcase: City of None, from a Celeste co-creator, was also shown for 2027. Unlike Celeste, that upcoming game is not something to play while you wait.

What if you mainly want difficult boss fights?

Choose Nine Sols for demanding deflection-focused combat, or Blasphemous 2 for a gothic metroidvania with tough encounters. Both are available on Switch; their 2D combat and settings differ sharply from the announced game’s 3D beasts and guardians.

Nine Sols uses Sekiro-inspired deflection combat in an eastern-fantasy setting. It is the strongest recommendation here if you want fights that demand careful timing and repeated practice. Oruvai describes it as the closest boss-pressure match to Silksong; its October 23, 2026 snapshot reports 95% positive Steam reviews. Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 86.

Blasphemous 2 is a gothic metroidvania from The Game Kitchen, available on Switch. Its Mea Culpa expansion arrived in October 2024. Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 85 in 2026. Consider it if dark religious imagery and punishing exploration sound more appealing than a bright, plant-filled wilderness.

ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist offers a melancholy metroidvania atmosphere and difficulty options, making it a more adjustable choice if you want combat without committing to the hardest end of the spectrum. It is available on Switch. Oruvai’s October 23, 2026 snapshot reports 97% positive Steam reviews, and Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 85.

Dead Cells is the combat-first alternative: a roguelite with fast action, but a weaker match for a carefully handcrafted wilderness and secrets-led exploration. It is available on Switch, and Don Porque cites a Metacritic score of 91. Choose it for repeatable combat runs, not as the closest structural stand-in.

What should original Switch owners play first?

If you have the original Nintendo Switch, focus on games already available for that system; the Winds of Viridia demo and full release are not listed for it. A practical order is Hollow Knight, then TUNIC, then Ori and the Will of the Wisps, with a fourth game chosen to suit your appetite for bosses or secrets.

  1. Hollow Knight: Start here for Larkin’s music, interconnected exploration and boss encounters. It is the clearest thematic link, though not a 3D wilderness adventure.
  2. TUNIC: Choose this next if you want to inspect a world, decipher clues and discover how the map connects.
  3. Ori and the Will of the Wisps: Add it for lush environments and agile movement, with a more forgiving difficulty profile.
  4. Nine Sols or Animal Well: Pick Nine Sols for intense boss combat; pick Animal Well for a labyrinth of puzzles and secrets with less fighting.

That order is a matching guide, not a claim that these games share the same mechanics. In particular, none of the Switch options listed here gives original-Switch owners access to the announced demo.

What changes if you own a Switch 2?

Switch 2 owners can play the Winds of Viridia demo now, so they do not have to wait until 2027 to get a first look at the game. It is also available on Steam. The demo is the most direct way to sample the announced game itself; the other recommendations are alternatives, not substitutes for that preview.

Sword of the Sea arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 29, 2026, the day after the reveal. From Giant Squid, the studio behind Journey, Abzû and The Pathless, it centers on contemplative traversal across sand and sea. It is a good same-week choice if you want a beautiful, mysterious landscape and movement, but it is not a combat-heavy monster hunt.

For a longer wait, play the Switch 2 Editions of Hollow Knight or Silksong. The former’s Switch 2 Edition has been available since February 5, 2026. Both titles preserve the strongest audio and boss-combat connections in this list, while Sword of the Sea offers a different, calmer kind of traversal.

How do the main choices compare?

Game Best match for Structure and combat Platform note
Hollow Knight Christopher Larkin’s music, secrets and bosses Interconnected 2D kingdom; precision combat Original Switch and Switch 2 Edition
Silksong A harder exploration-and-boss challenge 2D exploration and demanding boss fights Switch and Switch 2 Edition
TUNIC Zelda-like discovery Isometric exploration; dodge, block and parry Switch
Animal Well Puzzles and secrets over combat Interconnected labyrinth; relatively little fighting Switch
Ori and the Will of the Wisps Nature, movement and an easier path Emotional 2D forest platforming Switch; not PlayStation
Nine Sols Boss pressure and timing 2D action; Sekiro-inspired deflection Switch
Sword of the Sea Scenic traversal this week Contemplative movement, not boss combat Switch 2; arrived October 29, 2026

For context, the comparisons between Winds of Viridia and other works come from press descriptions, not the game’s official Steam genre line. Console Creatures compared its exploration to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, its bosses to Monster Hunter, and its art to Studio Ghibli. IGN called it a soulslike action-adventure, while Elotrolado described a Zelda-like feel and highlighted rolling, sliding, launching and grappling. Those labels are ways to orient expectations, not evidence that the game reproduces any one title’s systems.

Comments on IGN’s trailer used phrases such as “Breath of the Monster Hunter” and “Kena X Zelda vibe.” Treat those as viewer reactions, not reviews. ActuGaming also reported base-building between expeditions, but that detail is not in Steam’s published feature list, so it should be considered unconfirmed rather than a confirmed core mechanic.

Those are the game’s published minimum specifications, not independent performance measurements.

Steam lists full controller support and recommends a controller. Its Steam Deck compatibility status is marked Unknown, so the listing does not establish verified Deck support.

The Steam product listing identifies the game as single-player and notes Steam Cloud and Family Sharing. English, French, Italian, German and Spanish (Spain) are among the languages shown with interface, full-audio and subtitle support; Steam directs readers to its full listing for all 12 supported languages. These details describe the Steam listing and should not be assumed to apply identically to the Switch 2 demo.

Which other upcoming games should you not count as waiting-list picks?

City of None, Tenjutsu, Witchbrook and Threads of Time were also among the 2026 Indie World titles, but they are upcoming games rather than released options for the wait. The supplied coverage gives Witchbrook a January 28, 2027 window and Threads of Time a Summer 2027 window. They may be worth tracking separately, but they do not solve the immediate “what can I play now?” question.

Likewise, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a useful adjacent pick for polished movement and a more guided map, and Metroid Dread is a strong map-design option on Switch. Neither belongs in an indie-only shortlist: the former is a Ubisoft game and the latter is a Nintendo first-party game. Treat them as optional genre neighbors, not indie recommendations.
