On hold is a broader order status: the retailer may be waiting on a payment, billing-address correction, verification, or another issue. The labels are not universal, and a retailer may mark an order on hold because one item is backordered. Check the order’s item-level details and any messages from the seller to find out what applies to your purchase.
What “backordered” means
A backorder is generally an availability issue. The item is temporarily unavailable, but the retailer expects to receive more and intends to ship the order when stock returns. Target and Nintendo use this basic meaning in their help pages: Target’s explanation of backorders and Nintendo’s shipping-status guidance.
A backorder does not, by itself, establish an exact restock or delivery date. If the retailer shows an estimated availability date, treat it as that retailer’s estimate, not a guaranteed ship date. Amway, for example, explicitly says its expected availability dates are estimates and describes cancellation rules specific to its own orders; those policies should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. What “on hold” means
On hold describes a pause in processing, and the reason can vary. Office Depot lists card authorization, an incorrect billing address, verification, and backordered items among possible causes. Its page also says most held orders are automatically released when the matter is resolved. That describes Office Depot’s process, not a universal rule. See Office Depot’s ordering help.

Some retailers identify a specific action when a hold is caused by payment. GameStop, for example, says a payment-declined hold can be addressed by updating payment details. Use the instructions attached to your own order rather than assuming every hold is a payment problem: GameStop online order help.
How the statuses differ

These are common patterns, not an industry-wide status dictionary. Retailers choose their own labels and may use an order-level status for the whole purchase while showing a more specific status for an individual item.

What to do when you see either status
- Open the retailer’s order details. Check which item is affected and whether the status is for the whole order or only part of it. Wyze directs customers to order history and item status for more detail: Wyze order-status guidance.
- Read the retailer’s messages and action requests. Look for a request to update payment or billing information, verify the order, or contact support. If the retailer gives a specific instruction, follow that process.
- Check the stated timing and payment details. Note any estimated availability or next-update date, and look for what the retailer says about charges. Policies differ: Nintendo provides a retailer-specific processing estimate, while Crunchyroll explains its own charge timing. Neither establishes a general rule for other sellers.
- Contact the retailer if the status is unclear. Ask what is preventing shipment, whether you need to take action, and what timing or cancellation options apply to this specific order. Do not rely on another retailer’s policy as a promise about yours.
Why the retailer’s own wording matters
“Backordered” most often points to stock availability; “on hold” signals that processing has paused for a reason the seller may need to identify or resolve. But a backorder can also trigger an order hold, and status names do not carry one guaranteed meaning across stores. The order page and the seller’s current support instructions are the practical source for what happens next.
