OpenTelemetry (OTel) and vendor-specific SDKs solve different parts of AI-agent observability. OTel gives you a portable vocabulary and telemetry pipeline; it does not provide storage, search, dashboards, tracing UI, or evaluations by itself. A vendor SDK can get data into one product quickly and expose product-specific workflows, but may increase the work required to change backends later. For most teams, the practical choice is not “OTel or an SDK.” It is deciding which layer should own instrumentation, then proving that the selected backend preserves the AI-specific data you actually need.

This guide compares the approaches across portability, framework coverage, trace detail, evaluations, deployment, governance, and cost. It also gives a migration-safe implementation plan and a concrete trace check you can run before production.

What OpenTelemetry and vendor SDKs actually provide

OpenTelemetry is a telemetry standard and transport layer

OpenTelemetry defines APIs, SDKs, and conventions for producing and exporting telemetry. For AI agents, the important part is the Generative AI semantic conventions: a shared vocabulary for describing AI-related operations so that instrumentation from different libraries can be interpreted consistently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those conventions are not a hosted observability service. OTel does not automatically give you a trace database, query interface, retention policy, evaluation engine, prompt-management screen, or user-facing dashboard. An application still needs instrumentation, an exporter, and a destination that stores and presents the resulting telemetry. You may route the same spans to different compatible destinations, but each destination can map or display AI attributes differently.

A vendor SDK is an implementation and product integration

A vendor-specific SDK usually combines instrumentation helpers with a destination’s ingestion format and product features. It may provide wrappers for a particular agent framework, automatic capture of prompts and generations, trace visualization, evaluation workflows, or prompt versioning. That convenience can shorten the path from an uninstrumented prototype to a useful dashboard.

The trade-off is coupling. Instrumentation written against one product’s APIs, field names, and lifecycle may require rework if you move to another backend. A vendor SDK can still emit standards-compatible data, but that is a property to verify for the exact integration rather than an assumption.

How GenAI semantic conventions affect portability

Portability has two separate stages:

  1. Instrumentation portability: your application emits spans and attributes using a shared schema instead of a destination’s private API.
  2. Backend portability: the destination accepts those spans and retains, indexes, and displays the fields in a useful way.

Passing the first stage does not guarantee the second. A backend may ingest an OTel span while ignoring an AI-specific attribute, renaming it, flattening nested data, or showing it only as an unindexed property. This is why a nominally “OTel-compatible” destination can still produce a poor agent-debugging experience.

Datadog’s documentation is a concrete example of this distinction. Its OpenTelemetry instrumentation guidance documents accepted GenAI and OpenInference attributes and warns that mapping affects how data appears. If Datadog is your destination, compare your emitted attributes with that mapping documentation before assuming that every field will be searchable or visualized as an AI event.

What to inspect in a representative trace

Use one realistic agent run rather than a synthetic “hello world” span. The run should include a model request, at least one tool call, a failed or retried operation if your workflow supports it, and the final response. In the chosen backend, verify that you can:

  • Follow the complete parent-child trace from user request to final answer.
  • Distinguish model operations from tool and workflow operations.
  • See errors at the operation where they occurred, with enough context to reproduce the failure.
  • Query the required GenAI attributes instead of merely seeing them in raw payloads.
  • Apply your intended redaction and retention rules without removing fields needed for debugging.

This check is an adoption recommendation, not a claim that any particular product passes it automatically. The result tells you whether the combination of your instrumentation and destination is useful in practice.

Comparison at a glance

Decision area OpenTelemetry conventions and SDKs Vendor-specific SDK
Primary role Common representation and export path for telemetry Product-integrated instrumentation and workflows
Storage and interface Not included; requires an exporter and backend Usually integrated with the vendor’s ingestion, trace UI, and APIs
Portability Potentially high when destinations support the same conventions Depends on export formats and how much application code uses private APIs
Framework coverage Depends on available instrumentation libraries and the operations you instrument yourself Often strongest for the vendor’s preferred frameworks; verify language and provider support
AI-field fidelity Consistent vocabulary, but destination mapping still determines what is retained and searchable May capture product-specific fields automatically; portability of those fields varies
Trace and tool visibility Requires correct context propagation and span design in your application May be automatic for supported agent frameworks, but inspect nested tools and retries
Evaluations and prompts Not provided by the conventions themselves May be a built-in product feature, depending on the vendor
Deployment Works with a backend you choose, including self-managed options Managed service or vendor-specific self-hosting options vary by product
Migration cost Lower destination-switching cost if your application stays on standard APIs Fast initial integration, but switching can require adapter or instrumentation changes
Pricing model No single OTel price; pay for the selected backend and infrastructure Plan meters differ: seats, traces, spans, units, processed data, retention, or credits

Where each approach is strongest

Choose an OTel-first foundation when portability matters

OTel is a strong foundation when you already operate a telemetry pipeline, expect to evaluate several backends, or want infrastructure and application teams to share one tracing model. Instrumentation can remain in your service while exporters and destinations change independently.

That benefit is conditional. You must keep application code on OTel APIs, document the semantic attributes you rely on, and test each destination’s mapping. If a backend requires private attributes for a feature, add them deliberately and isolate them behind an adapter so they do not become inseparable from core tracing.

Choose a vendor SDK when an integrated workflow solves a concrete problem

A vendor SDK is attractive when it supports your exact language, agent framework, and model providers; captures the operations you otherwise would have to write by hand; and offers a workflow your team needs now. Examples include a ready-made trace tree for a supported agent framework, evaluation queues, prompt versioning, or managed access controls.

Before adopting it, identify what the SDK emits and where that data can go. Ask whether it exports OTel, whether spans retain the fields your evaluators need, and how you would disable or replace the SDK. A fast integration is less valuable if changing destinations later means rewriting every model and tool call.

Detailed decision criteria

Instrumentation portability

Count the application code that depends on a destination. A thin exporter configuration is relatively easy to replace. Decorators, proprietary context objects, custom callbacks, and vendor-specific evaluation annotations spread coupling through business logic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With OTel, define a small internal instrumentation layer for agent steps, model calls, tools, retries, and errors. With a vendor SDK, keep its calls in that same layer where possible. This lets you change the backend without changing the agent’s control flow.

Framework, language, and provider support

Do not compare products by a generic “supports AI agents” label. Make a matrix for your actual stack: programming language, agent framework, model providers, asynchronous execution, streaming, background jobs, and tool libraries. Confirm whether each integration captures nested operations and preserves trace context across threads, queues, and service boundaries.

An OTel approach may require you to instrument an unsupported framework manually. A vendor SDK may already wrap it, but only for a particular version or execution mode. Record those assumptions and test upgrades in a staging environment.

AI-specific field fidelity

Decide which fields are operationally necessary before choosing a schema. Typical requirements include identifying the model operation, connecting it to the parent agent step, recording tool activity, locating failures, and retaining the attributes used for filtering and evaluation. The exact field names and accepted mappings are destination-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Send a trace containing a model call, a tool operation, and an error through the complete pipeline. Compare the emitted payload with the backend’s documented mapping. If a field appears only as opaque metadata, it may not support dashboards, alerts, or evaluations even though ingestion succeeded.

Trace context and tool-call visibility

Agent traces become difficult to debug when context is lost between an HTTP request, an orchestration step, a model call, and a tool service. Whichever SDK or API you use, verify parent-child relationships, asynchronous execution, retries, and fan-out operations.

Tool spans should show which agent step initiated them and whether the tool returned an error, timeout, or partial result. Keep workflow spans separate from model spans so that latency and cost analysis does not confuse orchestration time with model time. Datadog’s product description distinguishes LLM spans from surrounding tool and workflow spans; its pricing page says those surrounding spans are not billed as LLM spans, but you should confirm current contract terms for your account.

Evaluation and prompt workflows

OTel conventions describe telemetry; they do not define a hosted annotation queue, prompt registry, experiment runner, or scorecard. If those workflows are central to your team, a vendor platform may reduce integration work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep evaluation data conceptually separate from transport. Store stable identifiers that let an evaluator retrieve the corresponding trace, and define who may view prompts, outputs, and tool payloads. This allows you to replace a vendor evaluation product without losing the operational trace history.

Deployment, privacy, and access control

Self-hosting can help teams keep prompts, outputs, and tool arguments inside a controlled environment, but it makes you responsible for upgrades, availability, backups, indexing, and access policies. Managed services reduce that operational burden and require you to assess data residency, subprocessors, retention, encryption, and administrative controls.

Classify telemetry before production. Decide whether prompts, model outputs, user identifiers, tool arguments, and retrieved documents may be collected. Apply redaction at the instrumentation or export boundary, restrict raw-payload access, and set a retention period that matches debugging and compliance needs. A destination cannot enforce a policy for data you emitted indiscriminately.

Backend choices that commonly appear in this decision

Langfuse

Langfuse is relevant when you want LLM observability with a managed or self-hosted path. Its unit-based pricing means you should estimate representative event volume rather than compare its monthly tiers with a per-seat or per-span plan.

LangSmith

LangSmith fits teams whose agent development and tracing workflow is closely connected to LangChain. The per-seat base and included-trace allowance make team size and trace volume separate cost variables.

Datadog Agent Observability

Datadog is a managed destination with explicit documentation for OTel GenAI and OpenInference mappings. Existing Datadog customers should validate required semantic attributes against the mapping guide and confirm how those fields appear in search, dashboards, and monitors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phoenix OSS

Arize describes Phoenix as open source and runnable locally or self-hosted. That makes it a different operational choice from a fully managed service: budget for the compute, database, upgrades, backup, and access-control work that a hosted plan would otherwise provide.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Braintrust

Braintrust combines evaluation and observability concerns, but its tier allowances cover multiple meters. Estimate processed data, score volume, model-credit use, and retention together instead of treating the plan as a simple trace-storage purchase.

A migration-safe implementation plan

  1. Inventory the operations. List inbound requests, agent decisions, model calls, streaming responses, tool calls, retries, queue hops, and errors. Mark which operations must be visible in one trace.
  2. Set a minimum data contract. Define the identifiers, operation relationships, error data, and AI attributes required for debugging, cost analysis, and evaluation. Separate required fields from optional prompt or output content.
  3. Choose the instrumentation boundary. Put OTel calls or vendor SDK calls in a small adapter around your agent framework. Avoid scattering destination-specific code through business logic.
  4. Configure context propagation. Test synchronous, asynchronous, streaming, background, and cross-service paths. Confirm that a tool span remains attached to the initiating agent trace after queue or thread boundaries.
  5. Connect a staging exporter and backend. Send representative traces, including success, retry, timeout, and tool-error cases. Check both raw payloads and the backend’s indexed/searchable representation.
  6. Validate mappings. Compare every required attribute with the destination’s documentation. For Datadog, use its published GenAI and OpenInference mapping requirements rather than assuming generic OTel acceptance means full feature support.
  7. Exercise evaluation workflows. Attach a score, annotation, or test result to a known trace if your selected product supports it. Verify that evaluators can retrieve the correct trace without exposing unrelated user data.
  8. Apply privacy controls. Redact secrets and sensitive content before export, restrict access to raw prompts and outputs, and configure retention for each data class.
  9. Measure cost with realistic volume. Use your expected traces, spans, units, seats, processed data, retention, and model-credit consumption. Include retries and long-running tool workflows.
  10. Roll out gradually. Start with a small percentage of traffic, monitor dropped spans and export failures, and increase sampling only after the trace data is reliable. Keep a documented path to disable the SDK or redirect exporters.

Common failure modes and fixes

“The backend accepts spans, but the AI fields are missing”

Acceptance only proves that transport worked. Inspect the destination’s semantic mapping, attribute naming, nesting rules, and indexing behavior. Adjust the instrumentation to the documented mapping or choose a backend that preserves the fields you need.

“The trace stops at the model call”

Look for lost context in asynchronous code, queues, callbacks, or separate tool services. Propagate trace context explicitly and create a child span for each tool operation. Verify parent-child relationships with a trace that includes fan-out and retries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“An SDK captures too much sensitive content”

Disable automatic prompt or output capture where possible, add redaction before export, and use allowlists for tool arguments. Do not rely solely on a dashboard’s access controls if the raw payload has already left your environment.

“Costs rise unexpectedly”

Identify the meter responsible: seats, traces, LLM spans, units, processed data, retention, or model credits. Check whether retries, streaming chunks, evaluation runs, and long tool workflows multiply usage. Recalculate with production-like traffic instead of a quiet development sample.

“Changing vendors requires rewriting the agent”

Move destination-specific calls behind an adapter, preserve OTel context and your internal data contract, and export a small set of standard spans first. Keep vendor-only features as optional enrichments so the core trace remains portable.

Which path should your team take?

Start OTel-first when backend flexibility, an existing telemetry pipeline, or cross-service consistency is important. Confirm that your chosen destination supports the GenAI attributes and operations you need; conventions alone are not a complete product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with a vendor SDK when a supported integration removes substantial implementation work or a product-specific evaluation and prompt workflow is immediately valuable. Before committing, document its export format, data controls, framework limits, and the effort required to remove it.

Use a hybrid when you want fast product features without giving up an exit route: keep application instrumentation behind an internal adapter, emit OTel-compatible context and spans where possible, and add vendor-specific fields only when they provide measurable value.
