Choose a VPS if OpenClaw must stay online, reachable from anywhere, and independent of your home power and internet connection. Choose a home server if you value physical ownership, local files and devices, and a one-time hardware purchase more than turnkey availability. Both designs are supported; the right choice depends on who will operate the Gateway and how much downtime you can tolerate.
For either option, keep the Gateway bound to loopback, protect remote access with SSH tunneling or Tailscale, enable authentication before any non-loopback bind, and back up the OpenClaw state and workspace.
The short decision: VPS or home server?
OpenClaw’s Gateway is the always-on control plane. It owns your sessions, channels, authentication profiles, state, and workspace. Wherever that Gateway runs becomes the system you must keep powered, updated, secured, and backed up.
| Decision factor | VPS | Home server |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Runs in a data center while your laptop is asleep; depends on the provider and your remote-access path. | Runs only while household power, networking, cooling, and hardware are working. |
| Cost pattern | Recurring hosting charge; the amount varies by provider, region, storage, bandwidth, and workload. | One-time hardware purchase plus electricity and replacement costs. |
| Physical control | Provider controls the physical machine and you control the guest operating system and OpenClaw installation. | You control the hardware, storage, network placement, and physical access. |
| Remote access | Usually straightforward through SSH or a private overlay network, without opening your home router. | Requires reliable home connectivity and a secure method to reach the machine from outside. |
| Local files and devices | Remote by default; pair a laptop or phone as a node when the Gateway needs local screen, camera, or command tools. | Naturally close to home files and devices on the same local network. |
| Maintenance | You maintain the operating system, firewall, OpenClaw, credentials, and backups; the provider maintains the underlying facility. | You maintain all of those items plus power, router, ISP, cooling, disks, and hardware recovery. |
| Failure recovery | Restore the backed-up state and workspace on a replacement instance or recover through the provider’s tools. | Restore from backup after repairing or replacing the server, storage, power supply, or network equipment. |
Use a VPS when 24/7 message reception, scheduled jobs, and access from several locations are the priority. Use a home server when local control and ownership are the priority and you are willing to run a small production service at home.

What actually runs on the machine
The Gateway is not merely a chat window. It is the persistent service that keeps OpenClaw’s sessions, channel connections, authentication profiles, state, and workspace. If the Gateway host is offline, OpenClaw cannot receive new work or execute scheduled tasks there.
OpenClaw’s installation documentation lists cloud and VPS deployment as well as Raspberry Pi hosting. The getting-started requirements call for Node.js 24.16 or newer, or Node.js 26.1 or newer, with Node.js 26 recommended. After onboarding, the Gateway can be installed as a background service so it starts without an interactive terminal.
That architecture creates an important rule: treat the Gateway machine as the source of truth. The VPS documentation describes it directly: “The Gateway runs on the VPS and owns state + workspace.” The same principle applies at home. A second laptop is not automatically a replica; unless you deliberately synchronize and back up the state and workspace, it is only another client.
When a VPS is the better fit
Always-on operation without a household server
A VPS stays online while your personal computer sleeps. That matters if OpenClaw must receive messages overnight, run scheduled work, or respond while you are away from home. A data-center host also avoids the common home-server failure where a router reboot, power outage, or accidental shutdown silently takes the Gateway offline.
Reachability from multiple locations
A VPS gives you a centrally reachable host for a phone, work computer, and home laptop. You still need secure access controls, but you do not have to expose a home router or depend on an ISP connection that changes its address or blocks inbound traffic.
Lower household hardware burden
You do not need to buy, cool, and replace a dedicated computer. The trade-off is a continuing hosting bill. Official OpenClaw documentation does not publish one universal VPS price because the total depends on provider, region, storage, bandwidth, and workload. Select a plan based on the load you expect rather than assuming that every OpenClaw installation has the same resource profile.

A VPS is not managed OpenClaw. You remain responsible for the guest operating system, package and security updates, firewall rules, account security, OpenClaw upgrades, credentials, and backups. Provider availability is also a dependency. If the provider account is locked or the instance is deleted, recovery depends on your exported backups rather than on your local computer.
When a home server is the better fit
Physical ownership and local control
A home server keeps the hardware and storage in your space. That can be preferable for sensitive local files, for minimizing dependence on a hosting account, or for integrating with devices that are already on your home network. You can inspect, replace, or repurpose the machine without a provider’s virtualization layer.

One-time purchase instead of monthly compute rental
Home hosting may avoid a recurring compute charge, but it is not free. Include electricity, a suitable power supply, cooling, storage replacement, and the value of your maintenance time. A low-cost board that fails under sustained load or loses its storage can cost more than a modest hosted instance once downtime and recovery are included.
Raspberry Pi as a practical candidate
Raspberry Pi is an officially listed hosting path, making a Raspberry Pi 5 a reasonable home-server candidate for an OpenClaw Gateway. The exact RAM, storage, power-supply, cooling, and current product configuration should be matched to your workload. The available documentation does not establish a single minimum Raspberry Pi configuration for every use case, so do not treat one board specification as a universal guarantee.
Household dependencies
Your home installation is tied to the reliability of power, the router, the ISP, local DNS, cooling, and the server’s storage. Plan for unattended restarts and for the possibility that your public address changes. If you need access while traveling, add a secure remote-access design before you depend on the service.
Security: is a VPS safer than a home network?
Neither location is automatically safer. A VPS avoids opening ports on your home router, but it places the Gateway on an internet-connected provider account that must be strongly protected. A home server keeps the service behind your router if configured correctly, but unsafe port forwarding can expose the machine and every mistake in its firewall or authentication setup.
OpenClaw binds to loopback by default and uses port 18789. Its network guidance says that non-loopback binds require authentication and explicitly warns never to expose an unauthenticated Gateway on 0.0.0.0. Keep that default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Preferred remote-access pattern
The safest general pattern is loopback plus an encrypted access layer. The VPS and remote-access guidance recommends SSH tunneling or Tailscale Serve. With either method, the Gateway can continue listening only on 127.0.0.1 while you reach it through a controlled connection.
- Install and onboard OpenClaw on the chosen host.
- Confirm that the Gateway is listening on loopback and port 18789, not on every network interface.
- Set and verify Gateway authentication before enabling any non-loopback bind.
- For SSH access, create a local tunnel such as
ssh -L 18789:127.0.0.1:18789 user@server, replacing the values inside the code with your account and host. - Alternatively, use Tailscale Serve. It keeps the Gateway on
127.0.0.1and supplies HTTPS limited to your tailnet. - Test from a second device, then close any router or firewall rule that is no longer needed.
Tailscale Funnel is different: it makes a service public and therefore requires password authentication. Do not treat Funnel as equivalent to tailnet-only Serve.
Why direct port forwarding is a poor default
Forwarding port 18789 from a home router to the Gateway creates a public attack surface and bypasses the protection of loopback binding. If you must use a non-loopback bind, apply authentication first, restrict the firewall to the smallest necessary source range, and monitor the host. An unauthenticated all-interface bind is specifically unsafe.

Remote use with local devices
A VPS can be the central Gateway while your laptop or phone remains the place where local tools are available. OpenClaw supports pairing a device as a node. The Gateway stays central and calls the node over its WebSocket connection when it needs local screen, camera, or command capabilities.
This split is useful when you want VPS availability but do not want to move every local file or peripheral into a data center. It also means the node must be online and authorized when a task needs it. A sleeping laptop cannot provide a camera or screen operation until it reconnects.
Setup plan for either deployment
1. Choose a host you can recover
For a VPS, select a provider, region, storage size, and bandwidth allowance that match your expected workload. For home hosting, select hardware with dependable storage, adequate cooling, and a stable power supply. Raspberry Pi 5 is one supported path, but verify the exact configuration for your intended use.
2. Install the required runtime
Install Node.js 24.16 or newer, or 26.1 or newer; Node.js 26 is the recommended line in the getting-started documentation. Keep the operating system and Node.js packages updated through your normal administration process.
3. Complete onboarding on the Gateway host
Run OpenClaw onboarding on the machine that will remain authoritative. Configure the channels and authentication profiles there, and keep the workspace on that host. Do not assume that copying only the application binary transfers sessions or credentials.

5. Lock down network exposure
Leave the Gateway on loopback, enable authentication, and use SSH tunneling or Tailscale Serve for administration and client access. On a home server, avoid router port forwarding unless you have a documented, authenticated design. On a VPS, restrict the provider firewall and the operating-system firewall to the traffic you actually need.
6. Create and test backups
Back up the OpenClaw state and workspace regularly. Store a copy away from the Gateway host so a failed disk, deleted VPS, or household incident does not destroy both the live data and its backup. Periodically perform a restore to confirm that the backup contains what you expect.

Backups and failure recovery
The Gateway host should be treated as disposable even when the hardware is expensive. A VPS can be terminated or become inaccessible; a home server can lose a disk, power supply, or operating-system volume. Recovery is practical only when you have current copies of the state and workspace and know how to reinstall the required runtime.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Back up configuration and state: include the OpenClaw state and workspace that the Gateway owns.
- Protect credentials: store authentication material securely and separately from public source code or an unencrypted shared folder.
- Keep an off-host copy: a backup on the same VPS or in the same room is not protection against host loss.
- Test restoration: confirm that a clean host can be rebuilt with the required Node.js version and that the restored workspace is usable.
- Document access: record the server account, SSH or Tailscale method, and the steps needed to re-establish the Gateway without exposing it publicly.
Decision checklist
Choose a VPS when most of these statements are true
- You need OpenClaw to receive work continuously while personal computers are off.
- You expect to connect from several locations or networks.
- You do not want to operate a powered computer, UPS, router rule, and spare storage at home.
- A recurring hosting charge is acceptable in exchange for simpler physical logistics.
- You can manage a Linux host, provider account security, firewall rules, and backups.
Choose a home server when most of these statements are true
- You already own suitable hardware or specifically want physical ownership.
- OpenClaw needs frequent access to local files, screens, cameras, or other devices.
- You can keep the machine powered, cooled, updated, and reachable.
- You are comfortable troubleshooting household networking and ISP interruptions.
- You will implement secure remote access rather than exposing the Gateway directly.
Use a hybrid arrangement when priorities conflict
Run the Gateway on a VPS for continuous availability and pair a home laptop or phone as a node for local tools. This preserves a central, remotely reachable control plane without moving every local capability to the data center. It also introduces two systems to update and secure, so document which tasks require the node and keep both sides backed up and authorized.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Putting the Gateway on a laptop that sleeps
Symptom: messages and scheduled work stop whenever the laptop closes or loses power. Fix: move the Gateway to an always-on VPS or home server, then use the laptop as a client or node.
Binding to every interface before authentication
Symptom: port 18789 is reachable from networks that should not see it. Fix: return to loopback binding, enable authentication, and use SSH or Tailscale for access.
Assuming a VPS removes all maintenance
Symptom: an unpatched operating system, expired credential, or missing backup becomes the outage. Fix: schedule updates, review firewall and account security, and test restoration.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming local ownership means automatic resilience
Symptom: a disk or power failure removes the only copy of the workspace. Fix: maintain off-host backups and a written rebuild procedure.
Bottom line
A VPS is the better default for an OpenClaw Gateway that must be online all the time and reachable from multiple places with minimal household hardware. A home server is the better choice when local ownership, local-device access, and control over the physical machine outweigh the effort of maintaining power, networking, storage, updates, backups, and secure remote access. In both cases, loopback binding, authentication, encrypted remote access, and tested backups matter more than the location of the machine.
