There is no single open-source product that reproduces every function of a commercial software supply-chain security platform. The practical alternative is a toolchain: generate software bills of materials (SBOMs), scan dependencies and images, monitor a component portfolio, correlate metadata, and add signing or provenance controls. Choose each component by the job it must perform, the artifact formats your builds produce, and the operational capacity your team can support.
What counts as an alternative?
“Software supply-chain security platform” can describe several different security jobs. A product may identify vulnerable libraries in a pull request, maintain an inventory of components across hundreds of applications, enforce release policies, map relationships between packages and build artifacts, or prove that an artifact came from an authorized build. Those are related controls, but they are not interchangeable.
Open-source projects generally specialize. A scanner can report a vulnerable package without maintaining a long-lived portfolio. An SBOM generator can describe what is inside an image without deciding whether a release should be blocked. A signing system can prove who attested to an artifact without detecting a vulnerable dependency. Treat the options below as building blocks rather than one-for-one replacements.
“Dependency-Track is the open source platform to inventory components, find vulnerabilities, and enforce policy across the software supply chain.” — OWASP Dependency-Track project description

That description reflects the broadest workflow in this list, but Dependency-Track still depends on SBOM inputs and an operated server. Other projects cover narrower stages of the same process.
Map the commercial capability to an open-source job
| Primary need | Open-source option | What it does | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continuous SBOM inventory, vulnerability monitoring and policy | OWASP Dependency-Track | Ingests CycloneDX BOMs, inventories components across projects, checks vulnerability and policy data, and re-analyzes a portfolio continuously. | Requires SBOM production, hosting and feed connectivity; it is not itself the build scanner or SBOM generator. |
| Dependency identification and known public vulnerabilities | OWASP Dependency-Check | Uses evidence to identify CPEs and associate CVE records; provides CLI, Maven, Gradle, Ant, Jenkins, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps integrations. | It is not a complete SBOM lifecycle or build-provenance platform. |
| SBOM generation | Syft | CLI and library for generating SBOMs from container images and filesystems. | Generation alone does not detect vulnerabilities or provide portfolio monitoring. |
| Container-image and filesystem vulnerability scanning | Grype | Scans container images and filesystems for vulnerabilities. | The supplied project description does not establish a broader portfolio-governance function. |
| Scanning against OSV data | OSV-Scanner | Officially supported frontend to the OSV database, available as a CLI or Go library. | It does not by itself supply a commercial platform’s portfolio workflows. |
| Multi-surface scanning | Trivy | Finds vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, secrets and SBOMs in containers, Kubernetes, code repositories, clouds and other targets. | Exact format and ecosystem requirements should be checked in the current documentation before rollout. |
| Metadata correlation and software relationships | GUAC | Ingests metadata such as SBOMs and maps relationships between software for security insights. | It is a correlation and graphing layer, not a vulnerability scanner by itself. |
| Signing, verification, attestations and build integrity | Sigstore and SLSA | Sigstore documents signing, verification and attestations; SLSA supplies a framework and checklist for preventing tampering and improving integrity. | These controls establish trust and provenance; they do not replace dependency vulnerability scanning. |
How the pieces fit together
A defensible open-source design separates four data flows. First, the build produces an SBOM. Second, scanners match components or files against vulnerability data. Third, a portfolio service stores SBOMs and applies policy over time. Fourth, provenance and signing systems let consumers verify how an artifact was built and who attested to it.
- Generate an SBOM: Run Syft (or a scanner that also emits SBOMs) against the filesystem or container image produced by the build.
- Scan at change time: Use Dependency-Check, Grype, OSV-Scanner or Trivy in pull requests and release pipelines. Select the scanner whose evidence model and target types match your languages and artifacts.
- Publish to a portfolio: Send CycloneDX BOMs to Dependency-Track so projects, components, vulnerabilities and policy decisions remain available after the pipeline finishes.
- Correlate evidence: Feed SBOMs and other metadata into GUAC when you need relationship queries across packages, artifacts, repositories and environments.
- Protect release integrity: Use Sigstore for signing, verification and attestations, and use SLSA controls to define the build-integrity level your organization requires.
This arrangement gives you both a point-in-time CI decision and an ongoing view of previously released software. Omitting the portfolio stage leaves teams dependent on transient pipeline logs; omitting CI scanning delays feedback until after a release is assembled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOWASP Dependency-Track: the portfolio and policy layer
Dependency-Track is the closest fit when the main requirement is continuous SBOM-led inventory. It accepts CycloneDX BOMs, inventories components across projects, checks vulnerability and policy data, and performs recurring portfolio re-analysis as new information arrives. That makes it useful for organizations that must answer “Where is this component deployed?” after a release has already shipped.
What it can centralize
- Project and component inventory based on imported CycloneDX BOMs.
- Vulnerability analysis that can be revisited as vulnerability data changes.
- Policy governance and workflows that can make a build fail when defined conditions are met.
- Portfolio-level visibility rather than isolated results from one pipeline run.
Operational requirements
Dependency-Track is a service to operate, not a binary you run once. Its project requirements list a Docker environment, PostgreSQL, network connectivity for vulnerability feeds and adequate storage. Plan database backups, feed egress, access control, retention and upgrades before onboarding production projects. The project page says it is adopted by more than 20,000 organizations; that figure is presented by the project and has no measurement date on the page, so it should not be treated as an independently audited market statistic.
When to choose it
Choose Dependency-Track when you already can generate reliable BOMs and need recurring analysis, policy ownership and historical portfolio visibility. It is a poor first step if your builds do not emit SBOMs or if nobody can operate a database-backed service.

Dependency-Check: dependency evidence in the build
OWASP Dependency-Check is a software-composition-analysis suite focused on identifying dependencies and known public vulnerabilities. It uses evidence to identify Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) entries and associate them with Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) records.
Recommended Free Tools
The project provides a command-line interface and integrations for Maven, Gradle, Ant, Jenkins, GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps. Those integrations make it suitable for a gate in an existing build system, especially where Java or JVM-oriented build tools are already standardized. Its role is narrower than a complete SBOM lifecycle: a successful scan does not automatically create a continuously monitored inventory or establish build provenance.
Use it for
- Failing or warning on dependency vulnerabilities during a build.
- Adding SCA checks to the listed build servers and CI services.
- Investigating why a dependency was associated with a public vulnerability through evidence and CPE matching.
Do not use it as the only control when
You need historical SBOM retention, cross-project exposure queries, signed attestations or an inventory that is re-evaluated independently of new builds. Pair it with an SBOM generator and, where required, Dependency-Track.
Syft: create the SBOM that other systems consume
Syft is a command-line tool and library for generating SBOMs from container images and filesystems. Its most important contribution is the machine-readable inventory: package names, versions and related metadata that can be passed to a monitoring system or archived with a release.
A practical placement in CI
- Build the image or assemble the release filesystem.
- Run Syft against that exact image or filesystem, rather than a different source checkout.
- Store the resulting SBOM with the build artifacts and publish it to the portfolio service.
- Run one or more vulnerability scanners against the same artifact and retain their results with the build record.
Generating an SBOM is not equivalent to finding vulnerabilities. A complete workflow needs a scanner and a place to analyze the inventory after the pipeline ends.

Use Grype in a pipeline stage that has access to the exact image digest or filesystem that will be released. Decide in advance which severities, exploitability conditions or exceptions should fail a build, and record exceptions with an owner and expiration date. The supplied project description establishes Grype’s scanning role, not a comparative performance ranking against other scanners.
OSV-Scanner: use the OSV database through a supported frontend
OSV-Scanner is an officially supported frontend to the OSV database and is available as a CLI or Go library. It is appropriate when your vulnerability workflow is centered on OSV records and you want the same scanner logic available in automation or embedded in Go tooling.
OSV-Scanner should be evaluated against the manifests, lockfiles and artifact types in your repositories. It can provide a useful point-in-time result, but the scanner alone does not create a portfolio service with recurring analysis, policy ownership and historical exposure tracking. Send its results or accompanying SBOMs into the broader workflow when those capabilities matter.
Trivy: cover more than dependency CVEs
Trivy’s project repository describes a wider scanning surface: vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, secrets and SBOMs across containers, Kubernetes, code repositories, clouds and other targets. That breadth is useful for teams that want one operational entry point for several classes of findings.
Why its breadth changes the decision
- A container image review can include both vulnerable packages and configuration problems.
- Repository and cloud checks can extend supply-chain controls beyond the final image.
- Secret detection introduces a different remediation path from dependency upgrades.
- SBOM output can feed a separate inventory and policy service.
Because supported ecosystems, output formats and integrations evolve, verify the current documentation for every target you plan to scan. Do not assume that a broad product label means identical coverage for every language, lockfile or cloud resource.
GUAC: connect metadata into a software graph
GUAC ingests metadata such as SBOMs and maps relationships between pieces of software for security insights. This is useful when the hard question is relational: which artifacts contain a component, which repositories produced those artifacts, or what other evidence is associated with a package.

GUAC complements scanners rather than replacing them. It needs trustworthy metadata from upstream generators, scanners, build systems or registries. If those sources are incomplete or use inconsistent identifiers, the resulting graph will be difficult to query reliably. Establish naming, version and artifact-identity conventions before treating graph results as an authoritative exposure list.
Sigstore and SLSA: prove integrity and provenance
Sigstore documentation covers signing, verification and attestations. These mechanisms let a producer sign an artifact or statement and let a consumer verify the signature and associated identity or attestation data.
SLSA is not a scanner. Its project describes it as “a security framework, a checklist of standards and controls to prevent tampering, improve integrity, and secure packages and infrastructure.” Use that framework to define build requirements such as controlled builders, provenance generation and verification at release or deployment time.
What these controls answer
- Was this artifact signed or attested?
- Can the signature or attestation be verified against the expected identity?
- Was the artifact produced by a build process meeting the organization’s integrity requirements?
They do not answer whether a bundled library has a known CVE. Keep provenance checks and vulnerability checks as separate gates, with separate owners and remediation paths.

For pull-request and CI gates
Start with the scanner that understands your manifests, lockfiles, images or filesystems. Dependency-Check, OSV-Scanner, Grype and Trivy can supply point-in-time findings in their respective roles. Add a build-failure policy only after establishing severity thresholds, suppression rules and an exception process.

For recurring portfolio monitoring
Generate CycloneDX BOMs consistently and publish them to Dependency-Track. This pattern is appropriate when vulnerabilities may be disclosed after a build has finished and you need to identify all affected projects without waiting for every repository to rebuild.

For provenance and release verification
Add Sigstore signing or attestations and define the desired SLSA controls. Enforce verification where artifacts enter a registry, deploy to production or are consumed by another team.
For relationship and exposure analysis
Add GUAC when your questions span multiple metadata sources and require graph-style relationships. Make sure each source emits stable artifact and component identities.
For a constrained operations team
Prefer the smallest composition that satisfies the threat model. Every additional service adds upgrades, credentials, feed connectivity, storage, backups, alert routing and ownership. A short list of tools is not automatically simpler if each one requires a separate operating model.

Deployment and maintenance checklist
- Define system boundaries: list source repositories, build systems, registries, container images, package managers and deployment targets.
- Choose canonical artifacts: decide whether scans run on source trees, lockfiles, built filesystems, image tags or immutable digests.
- Standardize SBOM handling: select the format your portfolio service accepts and preserve the BOM alongside the exact release artifact.
- Provide vulnerability-feed access: allow the services that need network feeds to reach them, and monitor feed freshness.
- Plan storage and backups: Dependency-Track’s PostgreSQL-backed deployment needs capacity planning, retention rules and tested recovery.
- Assign policy ownership: name the team that sets fail thresholds, reviews suppressions and retires exceptions.
- Route alerts: map findings to repository or service owners instead of sending every event to one central inbox.
- Verify provenance at a defined boundary: specify where signatures and attestations are mandatory and what happens when verification fails.
- Review coverage after upgrades: release status, supported ecosystems, vulnerability-feed coverage and SBOM formats can change, so recheck current project documentation.
Common failure modes and fixes
“We installed a scanner, so we have an inventory.”
A scan result is usually tied to one run. Generate and retain SBOMs, then publish them to a service that can re-analyze the portfolio as vulnerability data changes.
“Our SBOM proves the release is safe.”
An SBOM describes contents; it does not by itself establish that components are vulnerability-free or that the artifact came from an authorized build. Pair inventory with vulnerability analysis and provenance controls.
“One tool should cover every threat.”
Dependency vulnerabilities, secrets, infrastructure misconfigurations, metadata relationships and build tampering require different evidence. Select controls by threat and workflow rather than forcing one product to own every decision.
“Open source means no operating cost.”
Licensing may avoid a software subscription, but services still require hosting, databases, feed connectivity, upgrades, backups, storage and staff time. Dependency-Track’s documented Docker, PostgreSQL, network and storage requirements make those obligations explicit.
“A graph fixes incomplete metadata.”
GUAC can connect the metadata it receives; it cannot infer relationships that generators and build systems never record. Improve artifact identity and SBOM quality before relying on graph queries for incident response.
A practical selection sequence
- Write down the commercial capabilities you actually use: CI scanning, SBOM production, portfolio monitoring, policy gates, metadata queries, signing or provenance.
- Mark each capability as a separate job and assign one or more open-source candidates from the table.
- Test your real manifests, images and filesystems, including generated code and transitive dependencies.
- Measure operational work: feed access, database administration, storage growth, alert routing, upgrades and recovery.
- Define the hand-offs: which SBOM moves from the build to the portfolio service, which attestations accompany an artifact, and which system owns the final release decision.
- Roll out in stages, starting with visibility, then policy gates, then verification requirements that could block deployment.
The result is a composed control plane matched to your software lifecycle rather than a nominally equivalent product. The open-source projects listed here can cover the major functions, but each remains responsible for a distinct part of the supply-chain security problem.
