For most people, the better service is the one that matches the ecosystem they already use. OneDrive is usually the stronger choice for a Windows household that pays for Microsoft 365 or works mainly in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Google Drive is usually better for Google Workspace users, schools, and browser-first teams that depend on Docs, Sheets, Slides, sharing, and simultaneous editing.
Storage quotas and list prices matter, but the bundle can matter more than the raw gigabytes. OneDrive starts with 5 GB free and can include Office apps, security tools, and family storage in one Microsoft 365 subscription. Google Drive is reported with 15 GB free in a 2026 comparison table, while larger quotas are purchased through Google One. Free storage and paid plans
The free allowance is the first meaningful difference. A Microsoft account without a Microsoft 365 subscription receives 5 GB of cloud storage. Microsoft says that allowance is shared by OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com attachments, and Microsoft 365 app content. Google Drive is reported at 15 GB free in TechRadar’s 2026 comparison table. Google’s allowance is associated with the Google account and is used across the company’s storage services, so large mail or photo libraries can consume it even when the Drive folder itself looks small.

How to compare the prices fairly
Comparing $9.99 for 1 TB with a Google One storage tier is not a like-for-like comparison if the Microsoft subscription also replaces software you would buy separately. Microsoft 365 Personal lists a 1 TB allowance alongside desktop Office apps and other services. Microsoft 365 Family lists up to 6 TB for $129.99 per year; if all six terabytes are allocated and used, that is about $21.67 per terabyte-year, but the practical value depends on how many people need the bundle.
Microsoft 365 Basic is a different proposition: 100 GB for $1.99 a month is approximately $19.90 per terabyte when extrapolated, but you do not receive a full terabyte at that price. Do not treat that arithmetic as a claim that Microsoft sells a 1 TB Basic plan. It is only a way to understand the relative cost of the listed allowance.
Google’s exact storage tiers and prices must be checked on the Google One offer shown for your country and account. Taxes, currency, promotions, and plan changes can alter the checkout price. Verify the current amount before subscribing or renewing.

Google Drive: strongest for browser-first teamwork
Google Drive’s main differentiator is the way storage, sharing, and editing are organized around Google Workspace. Drive supports Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, while also handling Microsoft Office files and PDFs. Teammates can open a shared document in a browser, edit at the same time, leave comments, and use the sharing controls associated with their Google accounts. That workflow is especially natural for schools, volunteer groups, distributed teams, and organizations that do not want every participant to install desktop software.
Drive also reduces format friction for mixed teams. A colleague can store an Office file, another can work in a Google editor, and a third can review a PDF in the same shared space. The exact behavior depends on the file type and the team’s conversion or editing choices, so establish a naming and version policy before a busy project begins.

OneDrive: strongest when documents already live in Microsoft 365
OneDrive is deeply connected to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Teams. On plans that include real-time editing, people can work on a shared Office document while its latest version remains in the Microsoft storage environment. This is a natural fit for a company or household whose working files are already in Microsoft formats and whose conversations happen in Teams or Outlook.
OneDrive can still share files with people who do not use Microsoft 365, but the smoothest experience generally comes when collaborators use the same Microsoft identity and apps. If your group spends most of its day in Google Docs and Sheets, moving that work into OneDrive does not remove the need to manage Google accounts and formats.

- Choose Google Drive when simultaneous browser editing and Google editor compatibility are the center of the workflow.
- Choose OneDrive when Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Teams integration is the center of the workflow.
- For mixed teams, decide whether the authoritative copy will remain a Google file or an Office file. Storage alone will not resolve version-control disagreements.
Windows, browser, and cross-platform use
OneDrive is the more tightly integrated choice for Windows users. Files can be managed alongside the operating system and Microsoft applications, and a Microsoft account provides a single sign-in for storage and related services. That integration is convenient when a household already uses Windows PCs, Office documents, Outlook mail, and Teams meetings.
Google Drive is designed around a web account and Google Workspace applications. A browser-first team can reach shared files without making the desktop operating system the organizing principle. This can be useful when members use different computers or when an organization standardizes on browser applications rather than a single desktop suite.
Both ecosystems can be used from more than one device, but the details that matter are account policy, desktop sync settings, mobile availability, offline behavior, and whether an administrator allows personal accounts. Before a purchase, test the exact devices your household or team uses. A service that is technically available on every device can still be inconvenient if offline editing, shared-folder permissions, or file-on-demand behavior does not match your routine.

Family sharing and household value
Microsoft 365 Family lists up to 6 TB for $129.99 per year on Microsoft’s US page. That makes it particularly relevant to a household with several Microsoft accounts, each storing photos, schoolwork, or documents. The allowance is a family-oriented bundle rather than a simple anonymous bucket: confirm how the plan assigns storage to members and whether each person needs a separate Microsoft account.
Google One is the relevant comparison for a Google household, but the available data does not establish one worldwide quota or price. Google One plans vary by country and selected tier. Compare the storage shown for your household, the number of people who can share it, and any other membership benefits displayed at checkout.

Security, recovery, and administration
Security capabilities depend on the plan, so neither service should be labeled universally safer. Compare the controls included with the exact consumer or business tier you intend to buy.
OneDrive and Microsoft 365 controls
Microsoft documents secure storage and ransomware protection for consumer plans. Listed Microsoft 365 plans can also include Microsoft Defender and other security features. The practical questions are whether your plan includes the protection, how long deleted or changed files can be recovered, and what account-recovery methods your family has configured.
Google Drive and Workspace controls
Google Workspace materials describe Drive as secure cloud storage for sharing and real-time collaboration. Google documents ransomware detection, client-side encryption, and Vault for some Business and Enterprise plans. Those are not automatically included in every free or consumer account. Vault and administrator retention policies are particularly relevant to organizations that must preserve records or control access after an employee leaves.

Questions to answer before subscribing
- Is encryption described as provider-managed or client-side on the plan you selected?
- Does the plan include ransomware detection or a recovery window, and what content does it cover?
- Can an administrator impose sharing, retention, or account-suspension rules?
- Who controls the account if the only household administrator becomes unavailable?
- Can you export files in their original formats if you leave?
Use the vendor’s current plan documentation for these details. Security labels on a comparison chart are not a substitute for reading the recovery, retention, and administration terms of your tier.
File formats and compatibility
Google Drive explicitly supports Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides alongside Microsoft Office files and PDFs. That breadth is useful when a team receives files from many sources. Decide whether Office files will remain in their original format or be converted to Google formats for editing; conversion can affect features, macros, layout, and version history.
OneDrive is the more direct home for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files because those applications and the storage service are part of the same Microsoft ecosystem. Keeping the original Office format usually minimizes conversion decisions for an Office-heavy household or business. Google users can still store Office files in Drive, but the editing path should be agreed on before several people begin changing the same document.
Switching from one service to the other
Moving cloud storage is more than copying folders. Shared links, ownership, file formats, photo libraries, and account permissions can change during the move. Plan a short overlap period so the original collection remains available while you verify the destination.

Record total usage, the largest folders, shared files, photos, Office documents, Google-native files, and any files that exist only online.
- Clean before copying. Remove duplicates and obsolete backups. A smaller, organized source reduces transfer time and the chance of exceeding the destination quota.
- Choose a format policy. Keep Office files as Office files when layout or macros matter. Convert Google-native documents only when the destination workflow requires it, and note that conversion may change features.
- Copy in batches. Start with a non-critical folder, confirm that names, dates, and file types survived, then move the remaining folders. Large photo or video collections should be checked for missing items after each batch.
- Rebuild sharing deliberately. A copied file may not preserve the original owner, link permissions, comments, or team membership. Recreate access for sensitive folders instead of assuming old links still work.
- Verify independently. Compare folder counts and total sizes, open representative Office files and PDFs, and test a shared document with a second account.
- Keep the old account temporarily. Do not cancel the original plan until the new collection, recovery method, and important shared links have been tested.
Google-native files and Microsoft-native files are the main source of migration friction. If a team switches ecosystems but keeps editing in the old format, storage may move while the collaboration problem remains.

Three common scenarios
1. A Microsoft 365 household
A family that already pays for Microsoft 365 and uses Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams should start with OneDrive. The storage is part of the same subscription, and Microsoft 365 Family lists up to 6 TB for $129.99 per year in the United States. The main check is whether the household’s accounts and files fit the plan’s sharing arrangement. Buying a separate storage subscription may duplicate value you already receive.
2. A Google Workspace household or team
A group that writes in Docs, budgets in Sheets, presents in Slides, and shares through browser links should start with Google Drive. Its simultaneous-editing workflow is the service’s clearest advantage. When more than the free 15 GB allowance is needed, compare the Google One tier shown for your country rather than relying on a price from another region.
3. A mixed-platform user
If one person uses Windows and Office while another prefers Google editors, choose the location of the authoritative files. OneDrive is usually simpler for Office-first records; Google Drive is usually simpler for browser-first collaboration. You can access files from either ecosystem, but maintaining two parallel libraries increases duplicate copies, unclear ownership, and forgotten sharing permissions.
A practical decision checklist
- Existing subscription: Are you already paying for Microsoft 365, or are most of your accounts and work in Google Workspace?
- Free quota: Will 5 GB on a Microsoft account or the reported 15 GB on Google Drive cover your immediate needs?
- Documents: Are your important files Word and Excel documents, or Google Docs and Sheets?
- Collaboration: Do people need simultaneous browser editing, or do they mainly store and open finished Office files?
- Household size: Will several people use the allowance, making a family plan more valuable?
- Administration: Do you need retention, client-side encryption, ransomware detection, or administrator controls available only on particular business tiers?
- Migration cost: How many shared links, owners, comments, and converted files would have to be rebuilt?
- Regional terms: Have you checked the current price, taxes, quota, and renewal terms for your country?
If your answers are split evenly, keep the service that already contains your most important files and accounts. Switching for a small storage-price difference rarely compensates for recreating permissions and changing everyday editing habits.
