Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage > OneDrive first. If downloaded offline files are responsible, open OneDrive’s Me > Offline Files view and choose Remove from Offline (Online only) for items you do not need without an internet connection. If the app itself is large, iOS offers Offload App, but offloading keeps OneDrive’s documents and data, so it is not guaranteed to remove every byte. Confirm that camera uploads have finished before force-closing, signing out, or reinstalling OneDrive.

Check whether the problem is local iPhone storage or cloud storage

These are separate limits. The number shown in iPhone Storage is space used on the device. A Microsoft account that has reached its OneDrive cloud allowance cannot upload, edit, or sync new files, but buying more cloud capacity does not directly clear OneDrive data already stored on the iPhone. Microsoft describes the two situations separately in its iOS troubleshooting guidance.

1. Inspect OneDrive’s local footprint

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
  3. Select OneDrive.
  4. Note the displayed app size and documents-and-data size before changing anything.

This screen identifies what iOS currently attributes to OneDrive. Microsoft does not publish a typical amount recovered by any particular fix, so use the figures on your own phone to judge the result.

2. Remove downloads kept available offline

Offline files are a controllable source of local copies. Removing offline availability does not delete the cloud file; it changes that item back to online-only access.

  1. Open the OneDrive app.
  2. Open the Me menu.
  3. Tap Offline Files.
  4. Open the item’s menu and choose Remove from Offline (also shown as Online only).

The file remains in OneDrive and will need to download again the next time you open it without a connection. If you edited an offline file, let the phone reconnect so the changes can sync before removing its offline status. Microsoft’s instructions are in Read files or folders offline in OneDrive for iOS.

Offline folders have a subscription limitation

Microsoft says taking entire folders offline is available with Premium OneDrive and a Microsoft 365 subscription. Individual offline items can still be managed from the Offline Files view according to the app’s available controls.

3. Use Offload App when the installation is the larger part

When iPhone Storage shows that the OneDrive app itself is substantial, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > OneDrive > Offload App. iOS removes the application but retains its documents and data. That can recover space occupied by the app package without deleting the account’s cloud files.

Microsoft says you normally will not need to sign in again, but you may need to configure Camera Upload and Organize new uploads again after reinstalling the app. Because documents and data remain, treat offloading as an app-installation cleanup rather than a guaranteed full reset. See Microsoft’s step-by-step guidance at Troubleshoot OneDrive for iOS app problems.

Protect camera uploads before disruptive changes

Do not force-close OneDrive while Camera Upload is still processing. Microsoft states that automatic camera uploads cannot run after the app has been force-closed. Large photo libraries can also take time to initialize.

  • Open OneDrive and check that pending camera uploads have completed.
  • Keep the app available while a large upload is in progress.
  • Avoid signing out or reinstalling during that upload; Microsoft warns that a large upload may have to start again.

These cautions are covered in Microsoft’s mobile app troubleshooting guidance.

What not to change as a first storage fix

Photo format

Microsoft says OneDrive uploads HEIF photos in their original format. Changing iPhone capture settings is therefore not an established way to purge OneDrive’s existing local app data. The format details are documented at Upload HEIF and HEVC photos and videos to OneDrive.

iCloud photo optimization

Microsoft notes that iCloud-optimized photos cannot be uploaded through its manual iOS upload workflow. That is an upload constraint, not evidence that changing iCloud optimization will reclaim OneDrive cache space. See Manually upload files or photos to OneDrive in iOS.

Choose the least disruptive option

Action What it affects What remains locally Main consequence
Remove from Offline Selected downloaded files The item’s cloud copy; no offline copy for that item The file must download again for offline use
Offload App The OneDrive installation Documents and data retained by iOS Camera Upload and Organize new uploads may need setup again
Sign out or reinstall during an upload Account/app session while work is pending Cloud files already uploaded A large upload may need to begin again

A safe order of operations

  1. Check iPhone Storage > OneDrive and record the current figures.
  2. Finish any pending Camera Upload activity.
  3. Remove unnecessary items from Me > Offline Files.
  4. Recheck iPhone Storage.
  5. If the app package is still the main contributor, use Offload App, then reopen or reinstall OneDrive and verify Camera Upload settings.

If the cloud account is full, address that separately; it explains failed new uploads or sync, not necessarily the local number shown for OneDrive in iPhone Storage.
