Goldman Sachs is betting that small-business owners will adopt AI faster when they receive practical training and access to major technology providers. In 2026, the bank announced a Small Business AI Institute within a $500 million expansion of its 10,000 Small Businesses program. Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta were named as partners. The announcement does not specify subscription prices, product tiers, guaranteed results or whether every program participant receives the same tools.
What is Goldman Sachs’s Small Business AI Institute?
The institute is an education-and-adoption effort for entrepreneurs, not a new AI product sold by Goldman Sachs. It is intended to show small-business owners how to apply AI to everyday work such as marketing, planning, management and process improvement. The initiative expands the bank’s existing 10,000 Small Businesses program with $500 million in announced funding in 2026.
The named technology partners are Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta. Goldman’s announcement identifies the companies as sources of training and tools, but it does not publish a product-by-product catalog, usage allowances, eligibility rules, pricing or service-level commitments. Small companies represent more than 90% of U.S. companies, according to an NBC News report, so even modest changes in their use of automation could affect a large share of the economy. Goldman is using a program that already reaches entrepreneurs to address the gap between hearing about AI and deploying it safely in a real business.

The move also fits Goldman’s broader AI and finance strategy. The article describes Goldman’s share price as having approximately tripled over the previous three years, says the bank helped lead SpaceX’s record-breaking initial public offering, and reports that Goldman was working on Anthropic’s IPO. Those are contextual claims from the article, not independently established performance measures for the institute.
OpenAI chief executive and co-founder Sam Altman said AI could create “the greatest boom in entrepreneurship and small businesses that the world has ever seen,” adding that the gap between imagining an idea and bringing it to life is getting smaller. Goldman chief executive David Solomon likewise argues that companies risk falling behind if they do not continually evaluate new technology.
How widely are small-business owners already using AI?
Goldman Sachs surveyed more than 2,400 graduates of its 10,000 Small Businesses program. The results show broad experimentation but limited deep integration:

What can a small business use AI for without replacing people?
AI is most useful as preparation and leverage around human decisions. Rechelle Balanzat, founder of Juliette, said she treats her AI as a “consigliere”: a source of preparation that helps her ask more meaningful questions of her accountant and lawyer, not a replacement for either professional.
Marketing and customer communication
Owners can use AI to outline campaigns, adapt a message for different channels, summarize customer feedback and generate first drafts. A person still needs to verify claims, tone, pricing, accessibility and whether a message fits the company’s promises.
Planning and analysis
An assistant can turn meeting notes into action lists, compare scenarios in a spreadsheet or identify questions for a cash-flow review. Financial decisions should be checked against the company’s records and, where appropriate, by an accountant or other qualified adviser.

Management and internal knowledge
AI can help draft standard operating procedures, onboarding guides, job descriptions and training material. Managers must review the result for local rules, safety requirements, confidential information and practical accuracy before employees rely on it.

Process support
Small teams can use AI to classify incoming requests, route documents, prepare summaries or suggest next steps. The safest early projects have a clear owner, a defined input, a measurable output and an easy human override.
Mike DiMarino of Linda Tool acknowledged that he is sure AI can do more than he currently knows, while also stressing the value of people: “Machines are expensive. People are priceless.” That combination—automating repetitive support while retaining human judgment—is a more realistic near-term model than wholesale staff replacement.
How can a small business adopt AI responsibly?
Owners can turn the institute’s education focus into a controlled pilot by following a narrow sequence:

Start with a recurring activity such as drafting a routine marketing variation or summarizing internal notes, rather than an entire department.
- Classify the data. Separate public information from customer records, employee information, trade secrets, payment details and regulated data. Do not paste sensitive material into a service until its retention, training-use and deletion terms are understood.
- Set human approval rules. Name the person who checks every output, define what requires a second review and provide a way to reject or correct an AI result.
- Measure the baseline. Record current time, error rates, rework, response speed or conversion before introducing the tool.
- Run a limited pilot. Use a small group, a short period and noncritical cases. Keep a log of prompts, outputs, corrections and unexpected behavior.
- Review the economics. Count subscription fees, usage or token charges, integration work, staff training, security controls and the cost of mistakes—not just the advertised plan price.
- Expand only after evidence. If the pilot improves a defined metric without creating unacceptable risk, document the workflow and extend it gradually.
What are the biggest risks and constraints?
Security is not a side issue. An NBC News report described an incident involving about 700 AI agents at Hugging Face; the accessible account does not include the underlying technical report. The example illustrates why businesses need limits on autonomous actions, credentials and access to internal systems.

Which tools are included, and what do they cost?
The announcement names Google, Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta, but it does not state which applications, editions, limits or discounts are included. It also does not promise that institute participants receive free or ongoing access. Before committing, an owner should ask for the exact service, data-handling terms, account ownership, support channel, usage limits, renewal price and process for exporting business data.
Those omissions matter because the total cost of AI includes more than a monthly license. Compute or token usage, integrations, security reviews, employee time, training and corrections can outweigh the headline subscription fee. A tool that is inexpensive but produces frequent rework may cost more than a narrower, better-controlled workflow.

Goldman Sachs is making an adoption and education bet: use a large small-business program to help owners move from curiosity to supervised experimentation. The early evidence suggests that interest is already high among program alumni, but the 15% full-integration figure shows that sustained operational change is still uncommon.
For an individual company, the useful question is not whether AI is fashionable. It is whether one carefully chosen workflow can save time or improve quality while preserving privacy, human review and accountability. The institute may help owners learn how to answer that question, but the announcement alone does not establish a particular tool, price or business outcome.
