Enable pixel shift, logo dimming, idle screen protection and automatic panel care, then avoid leaving bright static graphics on screen for long periods. Keep OLED pixel brightness at a comfortable—not unnecessarily high—level during static-heavy SDR viewing. These steps can reduce uneven wear, but they cannot guarantee that an OLED panel will never develop permanent burn-in. Mixed viewing is materially less stressful than repeatedly displaying the same ticker, logo, game HUD, menu or desktop image.
The exact names and menu locations vary by model and software. Use the paths below as a guide, confirm them in your television’s manual, and treat automatic cleaning and manual refresh as different functions.
What causes OLED burn-in, and what do these settings actually prevent?
OLED pixels emit their own light. When the same bright elements remain in the same locations for many hours, those pixels can age unevenly. Prolonged news tickers, station logos, game HUDs, paused menus, computer desktops and set-top-box overlays are the relevant exposures. Watching varied films, shows and games changes which pixels work and is less likely to create a recognizable fixed pattern.

A faint image immediately after changing channels is usually temporary image retention (often called a ghost image). It may disappear after normal varied content or an automatic cleaning cycle. Permanent burn-in is lasting uneven wear; a refresh routine cannot reliably reverse proven panel damage.

Pixel shift moves the whole image by small increments. Logo dimming detects persistent bright marks and reduces their luminance. Idle screen savers remove or replace an unattended image. None of these controls “erase” wear that has already accumulated, and none makes a large stationary graphic harmless.
Which OLED settings should be enabled first?
For most owners, the safest baseline is simple: leave pixel shift and idle protection on, use the strongest available logo-dimming setting when its trade-off is acceptable, and let automatic panel care run when the TV powers down.
| Control | Recommended starting point | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel shift / screen move | On or enabled | Moves the picture slightly so the same subpixels do not receive an identical pattern continuously | Edges can move or a narrow strip can temporarily disappear; it cannot defeat a large fixed graphic |
| Logo brightness protection | High where available; Low if High is distracting | Dims detected stationary logos and other fixed marks | Detection is not perfect, and a dimmer logo is an expected presentation change |
| OLED pixel brightness | Comfortable lower level for long static-heavy SDR sessions | Reduces luminance and therefore pixel stress | No universal “safe” percentage has been established; HDR brightness should not be changed blindly |
| Screen saver / idle protection | On | Replaces an unattended or no-signal image | Built-in apps and external devices may behave differently |
| Automatic panel cleaning | Allow the TV’s normal off-cycle to complete | Performs routine compensation after use | Timing and behavior are model-specific; it is not a cure for permanent burn-in |
Should I turn on pixel shift on my OLED TV?
Yes. Leave it enabled unless a particular application makes the movement unacceptable. Sony’s OLED help guidance says, “Under normal circumstances, use the TV with this option enabled.” Samsung similarly says to turn on Pixel Shift for content with many static images.
On some Samsung televisions, the movement can make a thin portion of the picture edge temporarily disappear. That is normal operation rather than panel damage. Pixel shift is most useful against small, repeated features; it is not a promise that an entire fixed scoreboard or desktop will avoid uneven wear.
Brand-specific locations
- LG (documented B3-series layout): Look under General → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care. The setting may be called Pixel Cleaning or a related screen-move option.
- Samsung (select OLED models): Try Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Panel Care → Pixel Shift. Samsung notes that availability and layout vary; its illustrated instructions use a 2024 model and a Gulf-region support page, so a US or newer model may differ.
- Sony (applicable OLED models): Pixel shift is found under Expert panel settings in supported menus.
Should logo brightness be High or Low?
Choose High when reducing static-logo exposure matters more than keeping every logo at its original luminance. Choose Low if High produces an obvious change that interferes with your viewing. Turning the feature off removes that layer of protection.

On the documented LG menu, the path is General → OLED Care → OLED Panel Care → Adjust Logo Brightness, with High, Low and Off choices. Samsung places a similarly named control in Panel Care on select OLED sets. A detected logo becoming dimmer is the intended result, not a fault. Because algorithms and menu labels differ, verify the option on your exact model rather than assuming a setting from another year or region behaves identically.
Does lowering OLED pixel brightness help prevent burn-in?
It can reduce stress during long sessions dominated by fixed SDR graphics, but there is no cited test that defines a universally safe brightness number or quantifies how many extra years a particular setting provides. Use the lowest level that remains comfortable and readable instead of treating a percentage as a guarantee.

Other LG documentation uses Eco or Auto Power Save depending on country. Sony recommends an ambient-appropriate picture setting and lists Standard for home viewing with station logos. Those are model-specific recommendations, not a rule that every OLED must be kept dim.
Do not assume all HDR content should be reduced. HDR is mastered for higher highlights, and forcing a very dim setting can compromise the intended picture. The practical distinction is duration and repetition: lower output for a marathon news channel or a static computer dashboard, while allowing normal brightness for varied content when you need it.
How do I stop a paused game, menu or desktop from damaging the panel?
The most effective action is behavioral: dismiss static overlays as soon as you finish with them. Pause a game only briefly, close a channel guide, hide a desktop, and turn off a streaming box instead of leaving its menu displayed for hours.

LG describes an idle screen saver activating after approximately two minutes on a no-signal screen or paused video without activity on the referenced TV. Built-in apps can behave differently. Sony also documents idle screen-saver protection. External consoles, PCs and set-top boxes may keep sending an unchanged image, so the television cannot always recognize that you have walked away.
- Enable the TV’s screen saver or idle-screen option.
- Set the console, computer or streaming device to sleep on its own schedule as a second layer.
- When stepping away, switch to a varied full-screen video, power the source down, or turn the TV off.
- Remove persistent channel bugs, scoreboards and chat panels when the source offers that option.
How should I use pixel cleaning or panel refresh?
Let the television perform its automatic routine after normal power-off, with the set connected to mains power. Do not run a manual refresh after every viewing session. Manual routines are for specific symptoms or the manufacturer’s stated maintenance procedure.
LG’s documented behavior
LG describes an automatic cleaning cycle after four cumulative hours of use and a longer cycle after 2,000 cumulative hours in its support material. Its manual says the automatic process starts after power-off while the TV remains connected to power. Those thresholds describe the cited LG products; they are not universal OLED rules.
Sony’s documented behavior
Sony says automatic Panel refresh can adjust uniformity after long use. Its manual procedure is intended for noticeable retention or an unfinished-refresh message. Sony’s support article warns against performing manual Panel refresh more than once yearly because frequent use may affect usable life. Follow that warning for applicable Sony models rather than transferring it to every brand.
Samsung and other models
Samsung exposes Pixel Refresh and related controls under Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Panel Care on select televisions. Read the on-screen warning and your model’s manual before starting. A refresh may take time, prevent immediate viewing and correct temporary non-uniformity; it cannot reliably repair permanent burn-in.

Should I change the picture to avoid aspect-ratio bars?
Persistent black or colored bars can be a retention consideration, particularly when the same bar pattern appears for many hours. LG and Sony provide zoom or fit controls. Use them only when the trade-off is acceptable: zooming can crop subtitles, cut off image edges or alter the director’s intended framing.
There is no need to ruin every movie’s composition to avoid a theoretical risk. Reserve zoom or fit for unusually long, static-heavy sessions, and otherwise prefer varied viewing and sensible brightness.
What does the burn-in evidence actually show?
RTINGS.com’s original six-TV real-life study reported permanent retention after prolonged CNN exposure, especially at higher brightness. Its final findings were reported at 9,064 hours in 2019. The test’s varied-content result was less concerning, which supports the distinction between repeated static exposure and ordinary mixed viewing.
In an August 2026 analysis, RTINGS compared tested 2020–2023 OLED televisions with an older 2017 LG C7 comparison at a 10,500-hour CNN checkpoint. It found no consistent reduction in permanent retention for the newer group. The sets ran at their respective maximum SDR brightness rather than matched output; RTINGS explicitly says this “does not isolate intrinsic panel durability under identical luminance output conditions.” The accelerated CNN-only exposure also does not represent ordinary mixed viewing or establish burn-in resistance for all 2024–2026 televisions.
The same analysis reported that the 2023 OLED average sustained 10% SDR-window brightness 28% higher and full-screen SDR brightness 52% higher than the 2017 OLED average. Those are brightness comparisons, not percentage reductions in burn-in. RTINGS began a Longevity 3.0 test in October 2026, but initial measurements should not be treated as long-term burn-in results or a ranking of individual televisions.

What if I already see a faint logo?
First display varied full-screen content and allow the television’s normal automatic care cycle to run. If the mark disappears, it was likely temporary retention. Photograph the screen on a neutral gray or white test image only if you need to document a persistent problem for support; do not repeatedly run manual refresh in an attempt to force a cure.
If the pattern remains after normal use and the manufacturer’s advised procedure, contact the manufacturer or retailer to check warranty coverage. Describe the content, approximate hours, brightness mode and whether the mark is visible on multiple inputs. Avoid third-party “pixel repair” products or aggressive repeated refresh routines; the available data provides no evidence that such products restore worn OLED pixels.
Is OLED still a sensible choice for static content?
For ordinary mixed television, film and game use, OLED’s risk can be managed with the controls above. If the primary job is a dashboard, security monitor, news wall, point-of-sale display or computer desktop that stays nearly unchanged for many hours every day, an LED LCD category is a defensible comparison because the exposure is fundamentally static-heavy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat is a use-case decision, not a claim that every LCD is failure-proof or every newer OLED is immune. An OLED owner generally does not need to replace the TV simply to enable protection settings; changing habits and leaving the safeguards active is the sensible first step.
How to set up an OLED TV for lower burn-in risk
- Open the panel-care menu. Enable Pixel Shift or Screen Move, Logo Brightness protection and the screen saver where offered.
- Choose a comfortable picture level. For long static SDR sessions, select an Eco, Standard or ambient-appropriate mode and reduce OLED pixel brightness until it remains easy to view without unnecessary intensity.
- Configure source devices. Turn on sleep timers for consoles, computers and streaming boxes; their menus can remain static even when the TV’s own saver is enabled.
- Break up fixed content. Dismiss HUDs, tickers, guides and desktop windows. Do not leave a paused game or channel logo on screen unattended.
- Power down normally. After viewing, switch the TV off with its remote and leave it connected so the automatic care cycle can run.
- Use manual refresh only as directed. Follow the exact model manual, observe Sony’s no-more-than-once-yearly warning where applicable, and never treat refresh as insurance against permanent burn-in.
- Recheck after updates. Firmware can rename or relocate controls, so verify that protection options remain enabled after a software update or factory reset.
What are the key trade-offs?
- Protection versus framing: Pixel shift can move an edge; zooming can crop the picture.
- Protection versus appearance: Logo dimming intentionally makes fixed marks less bright.
- Brightness versus comfort: Lower SDR brightness may reduce stress but can look too dim in a bright room.
- Convenience versus maintenance: Automatic cleaning can delay immediate use after shutdown; interrupting it defeats the manufacturer’s intended routine.
- OLED versus LCD: OLED offers self-emissive contrast, while LCD may be the more tolerant choice for an always-on static display.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will pixel shift make subtitles or the whole picture look blurry?
Pixel shift changes the image position by a small amount rather than reducing resolution. You may notice an edge movement or a narrow missing strip on some models, but subtitles and normal detail should remain legible.
Can a screen saver prevent burn-in from a cable-news logo?
Only if it actually activates while the source is unattended. A television cannot protect the panel from a continuously active broadcast unless its logo-dimming system detects the mark or you change the content; configure sleep behavior on the connected device as well.
Is temporary image retention a reason to return an OLED TV?
Not by itself. A ghost image that clears after varied content or the normal care cycle is different from permanent burn-in. Persistent uniformity problems should be documented and discussed with the manufacturer under the model’s warranty terms.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does turning the TV off at the wall stop panel maintenance?
It can. Many automatic routines begin after standby and require the television to remain connected to power, so cutting power immediately after every session may prevent the intended cycle from completing.
