GOG is the better choice for dependable offline PC gaming. Its documented model makes Galaxy optional, offers offline installers, and is designed so supported games can launch without Galaxy authentication or an internet connection. Steam can work offline, but only after you sign in, finish updates, launch and verify every game you plan to use, and switch the client to Offline Mode while you are still connected.
That does not make every GOG game fully offline or every Steam game online-only. Multiplayer, cloud synchronization, publisher launchers, DRM layers, and game-specific checks can still require connectivity. The practical difference is independence: GOG separates the installed game from its client more clearly, while Steam depends on prepared offline data held by the Steam client.
Which launcher is better for offline play?
Choose GOG if your priority is launching single-player games without a client, repeated sign-ins, or an internet connection. Choose Steam if your library and social features are already centered there and you are willing to prepare and verify each game before disconnecting.
Steam’s Offline Mode is a convenience feature that avoids reconnecting every time you play; it is not a guarantee that every title will start without preparation. GOG’s documented DRM-free distribution model is intended to let supported games run independently of Galaxy, although online features remain offline.

What is the difference between Steam Offline Mode and GOG’s offline model?
Steam keeps the client at the center of offline play. GOG treats the game files as the primary product and Galaxy as an optional convenience layer. That architectural difference affects setup, recovery, and how much you depend on stored client data.
Steam: client-managed offline access
Steam’s support guidance describes Offline Mode as a way to play without reconnecting to the Steam Network every time. Before disconnecting, the account must be authenticated, the client and games must be up to date, and each intended game should be launched and verified. Steam then stores the information needed to start those games locally.
The arrangement has failure points. A forced shutdown can discard required offline data, a client update may be needed before play, and an individual title can still report that it cannot be started in Offline Mode. Steam’s guidance therefore recommends testing every game you expect to use offline rather than assuming the library behaves uniformly.

GOG Developer Docs state that “The GOG GALAXY client should not be required to launch the game.” GOG also provides offline installers through GOG.com, allowing you to keep installation files locally and install or update supported games without interacting with Galaxy.
GOG describes its platform releases as DRM-free: games should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, the presence of the Galaxy client, or internet availability. That is a platform policy for supported releases, not a promise that every publisher launcher, multiplayer mode, or online-only service will disappear. A game can still contain its own network check or require a separate launcher.

How do I prepare Steam for a trip without reliable internet?
Prepare while you have a dependable connection. The following sequence follows Steam’s published Offline Mode guidance and avoids the most common avoidable failure.
- Sign in and enable credential retention. Open Steam, sign in to the account that owns the games, and enable Remember me. Do not assume that an offline computer can recover an expired or missing login session.
- Finish every client and game update. Let Steam complete downloads, installations, and any pending restart. An unfinished update can block a title later, and an offline client cannot fetch the missing files.
- Launch each intended game once while online. Start every game you plan to play. Wait until it reaches a playable state, including any first-run setup, redistributable installation, or publisher sign-in that the title requires.
- Confirm the game independently. Close and reopen each title if necessary, and verify that it reaches its main menu or save-selection screen. This is the point at which a game-specific DRM check or secondary launcher will reveal itself.
- Switch Steam to Offline Mode. In the Steam client, choose Steam > Go Offline and confirm the restart into Offline Mode. Make this change before leaving your connection; do not wait until the client is already disconnected.
- Exit Steam normally. Use the client’s normal exit command rather than force-quitting the process. Steam support documentation warns that required offline data can be lost after an improper close.
- Do a final offline launch. Disconnect only after the client has restarted in Offline Mode, then open each game once. If a title fails here, reconnect while you still can and investigate that game rather than discovering the problem at your destination.
Keep the device powered and avoid deleting Steam’s local data before travel. If Steam later displays a message that a game cannot be started in Offline Mode, reconnect, complete any requested update or authentication, and repeat the per-game verification. There is no universal setting that overrides a title’s own requirements.

What can stop a Steam game from working offline?
Steam Offline Mode removes the need for a recurring Steam Network connection, but it does not remove every dependency a game may have.
Lost offline data after a forced close
Steam’s support material warns that required offline information can be lost when the client is force-closed. A normal exit gives Steam a chance to preserve the state it needs for the next offline session. If the data is gone, reconnecting and preparing the account again is the practical recovery.
A game-specific “cannot be started in Offline Mode” error
This message means the individual title has not satisfied an offline condition. Possible causes include an incomplete first launch, a pending update, a publisher launcher, or a DRM check that the game performs separately from Steam. Reconnect, finish setup, and test that exact game; do not infer behavior from another title in the same library.

Client updates and account authentication
A client update may be required before Steam will proceed, and an offline computer cannot download it. That is why the preparation sequence includes both client updates and a confirmed launch while online. Remember-me credentials help preserve the session, but they do not turn a never-authenticated account into an offline one.

How do I play a GOG game without Galaxy?
Use GOG.com to obtain the game’s offline installer while connected, keep the installer and required files on the computer or external storage, and install or launch the game directly. Galaxy can remain installed for convenience, but GOG’s documentation says it should not be required for supported games.
- Connect before travel. Sign in to GOG.com and open your owned game in the library.
- Choose the offline installer downloads. Download the game’s offline backup installers and any separately listed language packs or updates. The files are intended to be retained locally rather than fetched at launch.
- Store the complete set together. Keep all installer parts in one folder and maintain enough free space for both the installers and the installed game. A portable SSD is optional storage, not a way around a game’s own online checks.
- Install while disconnected if needed. Run the downloaded installer directly. Galaxy is not the required launch path for the documented offline-installer model.
- Start the installed game from its local shortcut or executable. If the title opens a separate publisher launcher or requests a connection, that requirement belongs to the game build and is not removed by GOG’s storefront policy.
- Apply updates deliberately. Download newer offline installers or updates whenever you have a connection, then retain the previous working installer until the new version is confirmed.
GOG’s offline-friendly design is strongest for single-player games distributed without additional online authentication. Friends, multiplayer, leaderboards, and other services that depend on GOG servers remain unavailable without connectivity.
Which features remain available when Steam or GOG is offline?
Offline status affects each feature separately. A game may launch and save locally while its online services, cloud synchronization, or social layer is unavailable.

How should I protect saves and installers for offline play?
Cloud saves are synchronization services, not local backups. Steam Cloud syncs when a connection is restored and can present a reconnection or conflict state. GOG similarly keeps offline changes locally and can upload them after you reconnect, but the cloud copy is not available while disconnected.
- Keep the installer files. A GOG offline installer lets you reinstall without depending on a storefront session. Steam games generally depend on the prepared Steam installation and its local client data.
- Back up important save folders. Copy saves to a separate local drive before leaving. The exact folder differs by game, so use the title’s documentation rather than assuming every save is in the same location.
- Do not overwrite a good save during a sync conflict. When reconnecting, inspect which local and cloud version is newer before choosing. Preserve a separate copy until the game opens correctly.
- Retain older installers or updates temporarily. If a new build introduces an incompatibility, the previous local installer may be the only practical recovery path while offline.
These precautions matter most for long trips, limited-bandwidth connections, or computers that may be reimaged. They also protect against storage failure, which neither launcher’s cloud service can fully replace.
Is GOG really DRM-free?
GOG says games released on its platform should operate regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether Galaxy is installed, or whether the computer has internet access. That is the key distinction from a client-centered offline mode: the downloaded game is intended to remain usable on its own.
“DRM-free” does not mean “every feature works offline” or “every game has no external dependency.” Multiplayer, friends, leaderboards, cloud synchronization, and any publisher launcher that performs its own authentication still need their required services. Read the individual game’s system and feature notes before assuming a particular title is completely self-contained.

Which launcher is better for traveling with a PC?
For a laptop or desktop that will spend days away from reliable internet, GOG is the lower-risk fit when the games you want are available there. Downloading offline installers and keeping local save backups reduces dependence on a client session. Steam is workable for travelers who already own the games there and can complete the preparation checklist before departure.

Choose GOG when:
- You want to install or reinstall a single-player game without Galaxy.
- You prefer keeping a permanent local installer archive.
- Your connection may be unavailable for long periods.
- You want the clearest separation between the storefront client and the game files.
Choose Steam when:
- Your purchased library is substantially larger on Steam.
- You value Steam’s friends, achievements, community, or controller ecosystem when online.
- You can sign in, update, and verify each game before disconnecting.
- You accept that a particular title may still require a publisher launcher or online check.
Does GOG’s catalogue size make it a practical Steam replacement?
GOG’s offline model is a distribution advantage, but catalogue availability remains game-specific. A CD PROJEKT Group report published in 2023 described more than 9,000 products from over 1,200 partners; that figure is historical context from that report, not a current October 2026 catalogue count. Check whether the exact games you need are sold on GOG before choosing a storefront solely for offline access.
Steam’s larger role in many PC libraries can outweigh its higher offline preparation burden. The right decision is therefore based on the intersection of your owned games, their individual DRM and launcher requirements, and how much setup you are willing to perform before going offline.
How we picked the recommendation
The comparison uses five criteria documented by the platforms and their support materials:
- Whether the game can be launched without the storefront client.
- Whether an offline installer or equivalent local installation path is available.
- How much preparation is required before disconnecting.
- What happens to multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online features.
- How clearly the platform handles game-specific exceptions and recovery.
On those criteria, GOG ranks first for offline independence. Steam ranks first only for readers whose existing library and ecosystem benefits justify preparing every intended game in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install a GOG game on a computer that has never had Galaxy installed?
For supported releases, yes. GOG’s documented offline-installer model is intended to let you download the installation files from GOG.com and run the installer without requiring the Galaxy client; a separate publisher launcher or online check can still change that requirement for a particular game.
What happens if Steam asks me to sign in while I am already offline?
The client may not be able to recover a missing or invalid session without reconnecting. Before travel, enable Remember me, complete one successful online launch for each game, and use Steam’s normal exit after switching to Offline Mode.
Can offline GOG achievements and statistics appear online later?
GOG documents local achievement and statistic handling for supported offline states, with synchronization after reconnection. The exact behavior remains game-dependent, so treat locally recorded data as provisional until it has synchronized.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

For games that matter during a long offline period, a second local copy protects against drive failure or accidental deletion. Store it on separate physical storage and keep a save backup as well; neither measure bypasses a game’s own online authentication.
