Ocarina of Time is the hinge of Nintendo’s Zelda chronology. In Nintendo’s current history chart, the shared sequence is Skyward Sword → The Minish Cap → Four Swords → Ocarina of Time. After Ocarina, the chart shows three outcomes: a defeated-hero history, a victorious Child Era and a victorious Adult Era. They are chronology branches, not three endings that players select from a menu.
The game’s own time travel is a separate idea. Link moves between childhood and adulthood during the adventure; the later chart describes the histories that follow those outcomes. This placement answers the basic question: Ocarina is not a late sequel or an isolated prequel. It is the transition point from one shared history into three separately labeled continuities.
Why are there three Zelda timelines after Ocarina of Time?

The defeated outcome is a chronology branch
Nintendo includes a defeated-hero outcome in the official chronology, but the chart does not establish that players create it by deliberately reaching a game-over screen. A game over is not evidence that the cartridge generates an alternate universe. Treat the defeated line as a stated historical outcome used to organize later games.

Nintendo groups Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons together on this chart. It does not settle an internal order between those two titles, so presenting one as definitively earlier than the other goes beyond the displayed evidence.
Which timeline is Majora’s Mask in?
Majora’s Mask starts the victorious Child Era branch. The specialist explanation describes this as the childhood to which Link returns after Ocarina.
