2. Separate game-data failures from software failures
A failed compatibility check, extraction error, missing asset or immediate startup failure points first to the ROM, archive or file layout. Re-dump or replace the legally obtained source with a supported version, then regenerate the archive. Changing internal resolution, widescreen or controller bindings cannot correct invalid game data.
