The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is easiest to learn when you build a small routine: read the A-button prompt, use L-targeting before fighting or aiming, assign items deliberately, and check the minimap before saving. This guide covers the Nintendo 3DS edition’s controls, item shortcuts, combat fundamentals, exploration habits, and spoiler-light advice for a first playthrough.
Nintendo 3DS controls at a glance
The 3DS edition uses the Circle Pad for movement, physical buttons for actions, and a touch-screen inventory for item assignment. The A button changes function according to Link’s position, while L-targeting determines what he faces and how he moves during combat.
| Control | Function | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| Circle Pad | Walk, run, swim, and trigger automatic jumps when running toward a gap or ledge | Use small movements near edges and narrow platforms; push farther to run. |
| A | Context-sensitive action | Talk, open, climb, grab, push, or perform the action shown by the on-screen prompt. |
| B | Sword | Press B for a sword swing; combine movement and timing rather than attacking blindly. |
| Hold R | Raise the shield while moving with the Circle Pad | Guard first, then look for an opening. |
| L | L-targeting | Lock onto an enemy or object, keep it in view, and strafe around it. |
| X or Y | Use the item assigned to that button | Confirm the icon before pressing the shortcut, especially after changing equipment. |
| Touch-screen item slot | Use the assigned item | Tap the slot when a touch control is more convenient than a physical button. |
| + | Display the minimap | Check your position and nearby layout before committing to a route. |
| START | Save | Save when ending a session so progress is recorded before you close the system. |
These labels follow Nintendo’s official instruction material for Ocarina of Time 3D. The exact A-button prompt depends on what Link is standing beside, so the prompt is more reliable than memorizing a separate button for every interaction.

Use the Circle Pad for more than walking
The Circle Pad controls walking, running, and swimming. Link’s speed and the distance he covers depend on how far and how long you push it. Near a ledge, a gap, or a narrow platform, use shorter inputs so you do not run past the position you intend to reach.

Running toward a gap or ledge makes Link jump automatically. There is no separate jump button to press in that situation. Approach the edge at a controlled angle, and remember that an automatic jump is tied to movement: stopping short will not produce the same result as running forward.
Read the A prompt before pressing
A is context-sensitive. It can represent a conversation, opening, climbing, grabbing, pushing, or another nearby interaction. Move Link until the prompt describes the action you want, then press A. If the expected prompt does not appear, adjust Link’s position instead of repeatedly pressing the button.
This habit matters in crowded rooms and around objects that can be approached from several sides. The game is telling you what interaction is available at Link’s current position; a slightly different angle can change the action.

L-targeting is not limited to combat. If a character is at a distance, target that character with L and then press A to talk. This is useful when a nearby obstacle or uneven ground makes a normal approach awkward.
L-targeting: the control that makes combat manageable
What targeting changes
Press L when an enemy or interactable object is within range. Link keeps the target in his sights, and his movement becomes relative to that target. Pushing left or right makes him strafe while he continues facing forward. This lets you circle an opponent without losing visual contact.

If there is no valid target, L can restore the camera to the view behind Link. That makes L useful even outside a fight: it quickly re-centers the viewpoint when the camera has drifted.
A reliable targeting sequence
- Face the enemy or object and press L.
- Check that the target remains highlighted or otherwise clearly selected.
- Use the Circle Pad to strafe left or right while watching the target’s movement.
- Press B when an attack is safe, or hold R if you need to defend.
- Release targeting only when you need to reposition or examine the room.
Locking on before throwing or firing a projectile keeps the target aligned. If you need a broader view for aiming, the 3DS edition also supports first-person viewing; Nintendo’s quick guide describes moving the system to look around in that mode. Hold the system securely and leave enough physical space around you before moving it.
When targeting seems to fail
- The wrong object is selected: move Link a little and press L again so the intended target is the clearest candidate.
- No target appears: step closer, turn toward the object, or use L to recenter the camera before trying again.
- You keep facing the enemy but cannot get around it: use side-to-side Circle Pad inputs for strafing rather than pushing directly toward the target.
- A projectile misses: establish the lock first, then use the assigned item shortcut; changing items does not automatically guarantee that the correct target is selected.
Sword, shield, and attack timing
B is the sword button
Press B to swing the sword. Nintendo’s manual identifies several sword actions: horizontal swing, vertical swing, thrust, spin attack, jump attack, and roll attack. The important beginner lesson is to vary your movement and timing instead of treating every encounter as repeated standing swings.
- Horizontal swing: a broad side-to-side cut useful when an opponent is within your immediate reach.
- Vertical swing: a more direct cut that can be useful when your position lines up with the target.
- Thrust: a forward attack for situations where distance and alignment matter.
- Spin attack: a wider attack that can cover space around Link when several threats are close.
- Jump attack: an attack delivered during a forward jump, useful when you commit to closing distance.
- Roll attack: an attack performed from a roll, combining movement with offense.
The manual lists these attack types, but the safest way to learn them is in a low-pressure area: watch how Link’s position changes, note which direction you are holding, and avoid experimenting beside a cliff or a hazardous environmental feature.
Hold R to guard
Holding R raises Link’s shield while you move with the Circle Pad. Against an unfamiliar enemy, begin with L-targeting and R held, observe the attack pattern, and release the shield only when you can reach the opponent safely. Guarding is especially valuable when you are still learning an enemy’s timing.

Circle-strafing combines the two defensive ideas: L keeps the opponent in front of Link, while lateral Circle Pad movement lets him move around the threat. This is usually safer than running straight in and pressing B repeatedly.

Use the room to understand a fight
Many encounters give you visible space for a reason. Look for room to circle, a safe distance for a projectile, or a path that lets you retreat. If the camera feels crowded, use L to maintain focus or recenter the view before making another attack.
Assigning and using items
How the item shortcuts work
The 3DS version uses an assignment system rather than giving every item a permanent button. Select an item in the inventory, place it on X, Y, or a touch-screen slot, and then use that shortcut during play. The icon shown in the slot tells you what will happen when you press the button or tap the screen.
- Open the item interface.
- Select the item you want available.
- Assign it to X, Y, or an available touch-screen slot.
- Return to play and briefly check the icon before using the shortcut.
- Reassign the slot when a new item becomes more useful for the room or encounter.
Pause for a moment after changing equipment. It is easy to remember the old item while the slot now contains something else, particularly when you are moving quickly through a dungeon.
Choose slots according to the task
Put the item you expect to use repeatedly on the button that feels easiest to reach, and reserve another slot for a situational tool. The touch screen is useful when you want to see several assigned items at once; physical X and Y buttons are convenient when you want to keep your attention on the main screen.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not assume that obtaining an item automatically places it on a shortcut. Check the inventory and assign it yourself. When a puzzle introduces a new tool, try that item on nearby environmental features before wandering far away. Dungeon spaces commonly provide an early, low-risk demonstration of an item’s purpose.
Aiming items with L-targeting
Before throwing or firing a projectile, press L so the intended target stays aligned. This is more dependable than trying to correct your aim while Link and the target are both moving. If the target is outside the normal camera view, use the first-person look function described in Nintendo’s manual and quick guide, then return to the normal view when you need to move.
Minimap, saving, and session management
Use + to check the minimap
Press + to display the minimap. Make a habit of checking it when you enter a new area, reach a fork, or lose track of your route. The map is most helpful when paired with observation: compare the displayed layout with doors, corridors, ledges, and open spaces around Link.
A quick map check can prevent unnecessary backtracking, but it does not replace looking at the room itself. Some progress depends on an interaction or environmental clue that is not solved merely by knowing your location.
Use START to save
Press START to save. Save at the end of a play session and after a meaningful stretch of exploration when you know you will need to stop. Saving is a simple habit, but it prevents a later session from beginning with uncertainty about what was recorded.

What to do during your first session
- Learn the A prompt: walk around the immediate area and test how the prompt changes near people and objects.
- Practice camera control: press L with no target to restore the behind-Link view, then target a nearby object or character.
- Practice strafing: lock onto a target and move left and right without attacking. This builds the movement habit before combat becomes dangerous.
- Test defense: hold R while moving, then release it and press B when you have a clear opening.
- Check item assignment: place a usable item on X, Y, or a touch slot and verify the icon in the interface.
- Try the item nearby: inspect environmental features around the place where the item was introduced.
- Open the minimap: press + and compare the map with the area around Link.
- Save before stopping: press START rather than simply closing the system.
This sequence teaches the controls in the same order that a beginner needs them: interaction, camera, movement, defense, items, navigation, and progress management.
Spoiler-light exploration and puzzle habits
Explore the immediate area first
When you enter a new location, inspect the space around Link before rushing toward the farthest visible doorway. Read every A prompt, look for reachable ledges, and notice objects that stand out from the surrounding scenery. The game often places the information needed for the next step close to where you first encounter a problem.
Use a new item on nearby features
A newly acquired item is usually worth testing on the environmental features nearest to it. Try obvious surfaces, openings, switches, or targets without assuming that every puzzle requires a complicated sequence. This approach keeps the discovery process spoiler-light while still giving you a way to infer the item’s intended role.

Separate navigation problems from combat problems
If you are lost, stop fighting and check the minimap. If you know where to go but cannot get past an enemy, stop moving forward and practice L-targeting, shielding, and strafing. Treating these as separate problems makes troubleshooting faster and prevents random button presses from obscuring the real issue.
Control your approach to ledges
Because running toward a gap or ledge triggers an automatic jump, approach narrow edges with deliberate Circle Pad inputs. Line Link up before committing to the run, and avoid holding the direction longer than necessary after landing.
Which version of Ocarina of Time should you play?
This guide is specifically for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo describes that edition as the 3DS version of the classic, retaining analog Circle Pad movement and adding a touch-based inventory. Those two features are the main reasons its beginner routine differs from other releases.
| If your priority is… | What the 3DS edition provides |
|---|---|
| Analog movement | Circle Pad control for walking, running, swimming, and movement-triggered jumps. |
| Quick item access | X, Y, and touch-screen slots that can be reassigned as your needs change. |
| Clear targeting practice | L-targeting with strafe movement and a camera-recenter function when no target is selected. |
| Portable first-person aiming | A first-person view that can be adjusted by moving the system; hold it securely and leave room around you. |
If you are using a different release, do not assume that its button labels or inventory layout match this guide. The concepts—context-sensitive interaction, target-based combat, item assignment, map checks, and saving—remain useful, but the physical controls may be different. For a first-time player with access to the 3DS edition, the touch inventory makes item swapping especially straightforward once you remember that every shortcut is assigned rather than permanent.

- “I stopped without saving.” Press START at the end of the next session and confirm that the save action has completed before closing the system.
A compact routine to remember
For everyday play, remember this order: read the A prompt, press L to establish focus, use R to defend, press B when an opening appears, check the item icon before using X, Y, or the touch screen, press + when navigation becomes unclear, and press START before ending the session. That routine covers the controls most likely to confuse a new or returning player while leaving room to learn the game’s puzzles and encounters naturally.
