The most reliable way to solve NYT Connections is to treat every attractive set of four as a hypothesis, not an answer. Scan all 16 words, state one precise rule that links four of them, test whether a fifth word fits better, and check what your choice leaves behind before submitting. The board has four groups of four and one intended complete solution, but the puzzle deliberately includes words that can appear to fit more than one category. A correct submission removes its four words; four incorrect guesses end the puzzle.

This spoiler-light method helps you reason through meaning, phrase structure, sound, spelling and specialist knowledge without assuming that the yellow group must be solved first or that every near-match is valid.

What are you trying to solve in NYT Connections?

Each board contains 16 tiles that must be partitioned into four groups of four. The New York Times Help Center says every puzzle has exactly one solution and is intentionally tricky because words may fit multiple apparent categories. The goal is therefore not merely to find four related words; it is to find four groups that work together as a complete partition.

When you submit a group, a correct answer is removed and its category is shown. Four incorrect guesses end the puzzle, a rule documented in a 2024 paper by Merino and colleagues. The daily game is a logic-and-language exercise rather than a speed test: a plausible cluster can still be wrong if it makes the remaining 12 words impossible to divide coherently.

NYT’s official tutorial uses two useful examples. Bass, Flounder, Salmon and Trout form a literal fish group. Ant, Drill, Island and Opal can all follow the word fire, creating a phrase-completion group. These examples illustrate the kinds of links the game accepts; they are tutorial examples, not a current board. Read the complete rules in the NYT Games Help Center.

How do I start a Connections board?

Use the whole board before committing to any one idea. The following sequence reduces impulsive guesses while leaving room for the puzzle’s deliberate ambiguity.

  1. Scan all 16 words once. Mark obvious definitions, unusual spellings, proper names, abbreviations, repeated grammatical forms and words with multiple meanings. Do not submit during this first pass.
  2. Circle possible anchors. An anchor is a word that strongly suggests a category or phrase but may also be a decoy. Keep at least two interpretations in mind for any conspicuous word.
  3. Say the category before selecting tiles. “Things related to music” is usually too broad. “Words that can follow fire” or “types of fish” is testable because every candidate must satisfy the same specific rule.
  4. Select four candidates and look for a fifth. If another tile fits the rule as well as one of your four, pause. The intended group may use the alternative tile, or the apparent category may be a red herring.
  5. Mentally partition the remainder. Remove your proposed four in your head and ask whether the other 12 can still form three coherent groups. A candidate that strands an otherwise essential word is weak even when its own connection is real.
  6. Submit only when the rule and the remainder agree. You do not need to pre-solve every group, but you should be able to explain why these four belong together and why the strongest competing word does not.

This is a reasoning framework inferred from the game’s one-solution rule, not an official algorithm or a guaranteed way to improve a win rate. Editor Wyna Liu has said that the game works best when it is “just solved your own way,” so use as much or as little pre-solving as suits you.

How do I find a valid group?

A valid group has one shared rule that applies naturally to all four words. Work through different kinds of relationships instead of assuming every answer is a literal category.

Start with exact semantic categories

Look for four words that are unambiguously members of the same set: animals, tools, foods, occupations, places or other concrete classes. Demand the narrowest accurate label. “Things in a kitchen” is weaker than “types of whisk,” and “things that are blue” is rarely specific enough unless the board clearly establishes that convention.

Test common phrase completions

One word may precede or follow each tile to make a familiar expression, title or compound term. Try candidate connectors such as a color, element, direction, body part or everyday noun. The connector must produce four recognisable phrases, not four merely grammatical combinations. The official tutorial’s fire example demonstrates this pattern.

Try alternate senses and synonyms

A tile may be a verb in one group and a noun in another, or may represent a synonym rather than its most common definition. Check homophones, abbreviations and inflected forms. A word that feels out of place under its everyday meaning may become central once you switch part of speech or sense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for sound, spelling and wordplay

Some groups depend on pronunciation, a shared letter pattern, hidden text or a nonliteral association. Read tiles aloud, inspect their beginnings and endings, and consider whether a word is being used for its sound rather than its definition. These links are especially common in the difficult purple category, but color is not a guarantee that a particular trick will appear.

Allow specialist knowledge, carefully

Proper names, brands of a broad type, fictional characters, scientific terms and other trivia can form a group. Blue groups may involve more specialised trivia, according to Liu, but unfamiliarity alone is not proof of an answer. Verify that all four items share the same kind of knowledge and that the proposed label is precise enough for someone else to understand.

How do I avoid red herrings and overlapping words?

Red herrings are not evidence that a board is defective; overlap is an intended design feature. The best defence is to compare competing partitions rather than to celebrate the first four-word association you notice.

Check Question to ask Why it matters
Specificity Can I name one exact rule that fits all four? Broad themes create accidental matches.
Fifth-word test Does an unselected tile fit the same rule equally well? A fifth match signals an unresolved choice.
Remainder Do the 12 remaining words divide into three convincing groups? The solution is a complete partition, not isolated clusters.
Connection type Is the link based on meaning, phrase structure, sound, spelling or outside knowledge? Clarifying the mechanism exposes weak associations.
Competition Does one selected word look essential to a stronger group elsewhere? Overlap often identifies the intended decoy.

When two groups both look possible, write down both four-word sets and compare what each leaves behind. Prefer the partition with the more precise labels and the cleaner remaining groups. Do not force a category simply because it was the first pattern you saw.

What does “One away!” mean?

“One away!” means that three of the four selected tiles belong together, but one selected tile is wrong. The game does not identify the intruder, name the category or tell you which unselected tile should replace it.

  1. Keep the three strongest members fixed and list every plausible replacement from the remaining 12 tiles.
  2. For each replacement, restate the exact rule rather than relying on the original intuition.
  3. Check whether the replacement creates a better group and leaves a coherent partition for the other words.
  4. Consider whether one of the supposedly strong three actually belongs to a different, more specific group.

Avoid blindly cycling through substitutions. Each new guess still consumes one of your four mistakes, and repeated near-matches can obscure the stronger partition you already have.

Should I always solve the yellow group first?

No. NYT presents the colors as a rough difficulty order from yellow toward purple, but you are free to submit groups in any order. Difficulty also depends on your vocabulary and background, and an easy-looking yellow set can be the trap that blocks the rest of the board.

Color What the available guidance says How to use that information
Yellow Usually described by NYT as the easiest level. Use it as an invitation to inspect obvious literal categories, not as a required first move.
Green No fixed connection type is promised by the rules. Treat it as a normal group and judge the rule and remainder on their merits.
Blue Liu says it may involve more specialised trivia. Consider proper names or domain knowledge, while checking that the category is exact.
Purple NYT calls it the trickiest; Liu describes purple as wordplay. Try phrases, alternate senses, sound and spelling after literal readings fail.

The color descriptions come from the 2024 interview with Connections editor Wyna Liu and NYT’s overview. They are tendencies, not a formula that predicts every board.

How should I use the board after a correct group?

Reassess the reduced grid from scratch. A revealed category can change the meaning of words that seemed ambiguous, and a word you mentally assigned to the removed group may now point toward a different connection.

  • Cross out the four removed tiles and reread the remaining words without preserving old assumptions.
  • Check whether a former red herring now becomes an anchor for a phrase, synonym or proper-name group.
  • Reapply the fifth-word test to every proposed set.
  • Keep a short list of candidate categories and the words that support each one; delete a category when its strongest member is removed.

Pre-solving all groups before the first submission is optional. The important habit is to make each submission explainable and to let the revealed category update your model of the board.

Which common mistakes cost the most guesses?

Most avoidable failures come from treating an association as proof. Watch for these patterns:

  • Submitting four words with a vague label. Replace “things associated with travel” with a rule that can be checked word by word.
  • Ignoring a fifth match. If five tiles satisfy your category, determine which four produce the strongest complete partition.
  • Assuming the most familiar meaning. Test verb, noun, adjective, synonym, homophone and phrase uses.
  • Starting with color expectations. A purple-looking wordplay idea can be real, but color order does not require a yellow-first strategy.
  • Repeating “One away!” substitutions at random. Compare replacements systematically and revisit the three supposedly certain tiles.
  • Overvaluing obscure trivia. A specialised fact is valid only when all four tiles share the same precise relationship.
  • Carrying a rejected theory forward. Once a group is removed, rebuild your interpretation of the remaining grid.

How can I practise without memorising answer lists?

Practise the transferable decisions rather than the answers. On completed boards, cover the revealed categories and try to name the rule from the four tiles. Then identify the strongest red herring and explain why it belongs elsewhere. This builds the habits the format rewards: precise labels, alternate meanings and whole-board partitioning.

You can also keep a personal log of connection types that fooled you—phrase completions, homophones, proper names or specialist references. Review the mechanism, not the exact words, so the exercise improves recognition without turning future boards into recall tests. No verified source establishes a particular human win-rate improvement from these techniques, so judge progress by the quality of your reasoning and the number of guesses you preserve.

How do I solve Connections while keeping it spoiler-light?

Separate the solving process from the answer process. Work through the board, use only definition-level references when necessary, and avoid comment sections or dated answer pages until you are ready to see a solution. If you do consult help, choose a hint that reveals a connection type rather than the four words themselves, then return to the reduced grid and complete the partition yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play the daily Connections puzzle without a New York Times account?

Yes. The daily board is listed as free without registration. Signing in is optional for access, but it helps preserve progress across devices.

Does a correct group always reveal the easiest category next?

No. A correct submission reveals that group’s category and removes its tiles, but the remaining groups can still be any difficulty or connection type. Reassess the reduced board instead of expecting a fixed order.

Is “One away!” the same as getting three words correct?

It means three selected words belong together, but the game does not identify which three or which replacement is needed. One of the selected words may also be part of a stronger alternative group, so compare complete partitions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Can I replay a Connections board from the official archive?
