Moving from NVIDIA Grace to Vera changes more than the host processor. Grace is the current 72-core Arm host CPU already validated in Blackwell, Hopper and Grace Hopper systems. Vera is NVIDIA’s next-generation, 88-core custom Olympus CPU, designed for agentic AI, reinforcement-learning loops and high-concurrency orchestration. It adds 176 threads, up to 1.2 TB/s of LPDDR5X bandwidth and up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent NVLink-C2C CPU–GPU bandwidth. For a conventional accelerated-computing cluster, Grace remains the lower-risk choice. Vera becomes compelling when CPU execution, tool calls, data preparation or bidirectional CPU–GPU traffic leave expensive accelerators waiting. Because Vera is tied to the Rubin-era platform, the decision is about rack architecture, cooling, software qualification and procurement—not simply replacing one socketed chip with another.
What changes when an AI data center moves from Grace to Vera?
The main change is the CPU’s role. Grace is a capable host for established accelerated computing, high-performance computing and data-analytics deployments. Vera is designed to participate directly in an “AI factory” in which the CPU coordinates many concurrent agents, launches tools, handles sandboxed code, processes reinforcement-learning feedback and keeps GPUs supplied with data.
NVIDIA describes Grace as the current generation and Vera as the next generation for agentic AI. Grace ships in Blackwell and Grace Hopper systems today. Vera is the host CPU for Vera Rubin systems and is also offered in standalone CPU and storage platforms. That difference in generation affects validation, availability and the surrounding system design as much as it affects raw specifications.

How do Grace and Vera compare on generation, cores and deployment?
Grace and Vera occupy different points in NVIDIA’s roadmap. The following comparison uses the figures and positioning published by NVIDIA in its current documentation and 2026 announcements.
| Aspect | Grace CPU | Vera CPU |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and role | Current NVIDIA host CPU generation for deployed accelerated-computing systems | Next-generation host CPU for agentic AI factories and Vera Rubin |
| CPU design | 72 Arm v9 cores | 88 custom NVIDIA Olympus cores |
| Where it ships or appears | Blackwell, Hopper and Grace Hopper systems | Vera Rubin systems, plus standalone CPU and storage platforms |
| Best-aligned use | Established AI, HPC and data-analytics deployments | Agentic inference, reinforcement learning, orchestration, tool use and intensive CPU–GPU data movement |
Vera’s published configuration also includes 176 threads. That higher thread count is intended for many simultaneous orchestration tasks rather than for making every serial CPU job faster. A workload with one large, tightly synchronized CPU thread may see little benefit from additional concurrency; a service coordinating thousands of short operations can use it much more effectively.
Why do Vera’s extra cores and threads matter for agentic AI?
Agentic systems perform more than a single model inference. An agent may decide which tool to call, execute code in an isolated environment, retrieve data, validate an answer, call another model and repeat the loop. Each step can create CPU work, and many agents can be at different stages at the same time.
Recommended Free Tools
Orchestration and scheduling
The host CPU schedules requests, tracks state, manages queues and dispatches work to accelerators. With 88 custom cores and 176 threads, Vera offers more CPU-side execution capacity for those concurrent control-plane tasks than Grace’s documented 72-core configuration. The advantage is most relevant when GPU utilization drops because the host cannot prepare or launch work quickly enough.
Tool calls and sandboxed code
Tool-using agents often invoke search, databases, compilers, Python processes or other services. These operations can be bursty and highly parallel. Vera is explicitly positioned for tool calling and sandboxed code, so evaluate it on the number of simultaneous tools, queue latency and end-to-end agent response time—not only on model tokens per second.
Reinforcement-learning feedback
Reinforcement-learning pipelines repeatedly generate outputs, score them and feed the results back into training or policy updates. The feedback path can involve simulation, parsing, analytics and data movement on the CPU. Vera’s design target includes this loop, while Grace remains a sound choice when an existing pipeline already keeps its accelerators busy and has been validated on the current platform.
How do Vera’s memory and CPU–GPU links change data movement?
Vera adds two bandwidth figures that directly address host bottlenecks: up to 1.2 TB/s from its LPDDR5X memory subsystem and up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent NVLink-C2C CPU–GPU bandwidth. These are peak published figures, not guarantees for every application or server configuration.

LPDDR5X memory bandwidth
Up to 1.2 TB/s of LPDDR5X bandwidth gives Vera more capacity to feed CPU-side preprocessing, analytics and orchestration. The relevant comparison for Grace is the actual memory configuration in the server being considered. Grace systems differ by platform, so a procurement team should record memory capacity, measured bandwidth and NUMA behavior for the specific Grace server rather than compare Vera’s peak figure with a generic Grace label.
Coherent NVLink-C2C
Vera’s second-generation NVLink-C2C provides up to 1.8 TB/s of coherent CPU–GPU bandwidth. Coherency reduces the software and synchronization overhead associated with keeping CPU and GPU views of data consistent, which is useful when an agent repeatedly alternates between CPU logic and GPU computation. The benefit depends on access patterns: a workload that copies a large batch once and then runs entirely on the GPU will use the link differently from an agent that exchanges small pieces of state throughout a loop.
Measure traffic, not just specifications
During a proof of concept, capture host-to-device and device-to-host bytes, transfer latency, queue depth, GPU idle time and CPU wait time. If the GPUs are busy and the CPU is lightly loaded, Vera’s bandwidth may not change the outcome. If CPU utilization is high while accelerators show gaps and the workload is transfer-heavy, the link and memory improvements are more likely to matter.
Which workloads should stay on Grace, and which are candidates for Vera?
Choose according to the bottleneck you can demonstrate. Grace is the practical default for established systems with stable performance and validated software. Vera is a candidate when orchestration or data movement is limiting throughput or latency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEstablished AI and HPC deployments: Grace is usually the safer fit
- Production services already validated on Blackwell, Hopper or Grace Hopper platforms.
- HPC applications whose CPU and GPU phases are well balanced and whose host-side concurrency is not limiting scale.
- Data-analytics jobs that meet their service-level objectives on the current Grace configuration.
- Organizations that prioritize an immediately shipping, familiar NVIDIA host platform and existing OEM support.
Agentic inference: evaluate Vera first
Vera is aimed at inference services that coordinate many agents, call external tools, execute code and maintain per-agent state. Use end-to-end metrics such as completed agent tasks per second, p95 and p99 response time, CPU scheduling delay and accelerator idle time. A higher raw model-inference rate does not prove that the full agent service benefits.
Reinforcement learning and simulation: test the feedback path
Vera’s target includes reinforcement-learning feedback and analytics. Benchmark the entire generate–score–update cycle, including serialization, simulation, reward calculation and transfer back to the accelerator. Isolating only the GPU training kernel can hide the CPU work that Vera is meant to improve.
High-concurrency data services: look for queue pressure
Services that handle many small requests, transformations or retrieval operations can expose host-side limits before they saturate GPU compute. Compare queue wait, context-switch behavior, memory bandwidth and the number of concurrent sessions that meet the required latency target.

What changes in a Vera Rubin rack?
Vera is not presented as a drop-in replacement inside an otherwise unchanged Grace server. NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin NVL72 specification pairs one Vera CPU with two Rubin GPUs in each superchip. A complete 72-GPU NVL72 rack contains 36 Vera CPUs. The rack is co-designed around Rubin GPUs, NVLink 6, ConnectX-9 networking, BlueField-4 infrastructure processors and Spectrum-6 networking.
This architecture changes procurement and operations. You are selecting a coordinated rack-scale system whose power delivery, liquid cooling, fabric topology and firmware are designed together. A standalone Vera CPU or storage platform may suit a different deployment, but it should not be assumed to have the same accelerator topology or performance characteristics as an NVL72 rack.
Why the rack context matters
- Fabric topology: CPU–GPU traffic and GPU–GPU traffic follow the platform’s interconnect design. Network placement and collective-communication behavior can affect application results.
- Cooling: Rack-level thermal design, including liquid-cooling requirements where specified by the system supplier, affects facility readiness and operating cost.
- Infrastructure processors: BlueField-4 and the surrounding network components are part of the platform’s management and data path; qualify the complete stack rather than the CPU in isolation.
- Serviceability: Firmware, diagnostics, replacement procedures and OEM support are tied to the rack design and may differ from current Grace systems.
Is Vera actually faster or more efficient than Grace?
NVIDIA has publicized claims including “twice the efficiency” and “50% faster than traditional rack-scale CPUs.” Those are vendor claims, and the official material considered here does not provide an independent, controlled benchmark using identical software, workload, memory configuration and power limits. Treat them as directional claims, not as a guaranteed result for your application.
A fair comparison must hold the following constant:
- Application version, compiler and runtime settings.
- Model, batch size, sequence length and agent behavior.
- GPU type and count, accelerator clocks and power limits.
- CPU power limit, memory capacity and software background load.
- Network topology, storage path and data-set location.
- Success criteria, including throughput, tail latency, quality and energy per completed task.
Report both system-level and component-level results. A CPU that improves host throughput but requires a larger, more power-dense rack may not reduce total cost or facility load. Conversely, a modest CPU improvement that removes GPU idle periods can produce a substantial gain in completed work per rack.
How should an organization decide between Grace and Vera?
Use a bottleneck-first decision rather than a generational preference.
Choose Grace when these conditions dominate
- Your application is already meeting targets on a shipping Blackwell, Hopper or Grace Hopper system.
- Current software, drivers, monitoring and operational procedures are qualified and valuable.
- The main constraint is GPU compute, not CPU scheduling, memory bandwidth or host–device transfers.
- You need a near-term deployment with established platform validation and broad OEM familiarity.
Consider Vera when these conditions dominate
- Agent orchestration, tool calls or sandboxed execution consume a large share of request time.
- Reinforcement-learning or simulation feedback leaves accelerators waiting.
- CPU–GPU transfers are frequent enough that host bandwidth and coherency show up in traces.
- You can adopt a Rubin-era system and are prepared to qualify its rack, networking, cooling and software stack.
Use a two-stage procurement gate
- Technical gate: demonstrate a measurable bottleneck on the current Grace system and define the workload-specific metric Vera must improve.
- Platform gate: confirm rack power, cooling, memory capacity, networking, software support, OEM service and deployment schedule for the exact Vera configuration.
If neither gate produces a clear benefit, keeping the validated Grace platform is the more defensible choice.

What should a Grace-to-Vera evaluation test?
A useful evaluation follows the application’s complete path instead of running a synthetic CPU benchmark alone.
- Trace the current system. Record CPU utilization by thread, run-queue length, memory bandwidth, host–device bytes, transfer latency, GPU idle intervals and end-to-end service latency.
- Classify the bottleneck. Separate CPU execution, memory bandwidth, interconnect traffic, storage, networking and GPU compute. Do not attribute every idle interval to the CPU.
- Reproduce real concurrency. Use the production number of agents, tool calls, sandbox jobs, retrieval operations and background services. Include burst traffic and tail behavior.
- Port and qualify software. Rebuild CPU-side components, validate drivers and runtimes, check container images and confirm that observability and security controls work on the Vera platform.
- Measure the full workflow. For inference, include prompt handling, retrieval, tool execution, model calls, post-processing and response delivery. For reinforcement learning, include generation, scoring, simulation and updates.
- Apply facility constraints. Measure power, cooling demand and rack density at the selected operating point. Compare energy per completed task, not just instantaneous throughput.
- Run a stability period. Test sustained load, failure recovery, rolling maintenance and noisy-neighbor behavior before committing production traffic.
Keep a Grace baseline from the same software revision and workload. If the Vera test changes several variables at once, record those changes so that an apparent CPU gain is not actually a model, compiler or network effect.

CPU list price is an incomplete measure because Vera is commonly evaluated as part of a new platform. Compare the total system and operating envelope.
Power and cooling
Obtain the supplier’s rack power range, cooling method, inlet-temperature requirements and facility assumptions for the exact configuration. A higher-density Rubin-era rack can change electrical distribution, cooling capacity, floor planning and service procedures even if the CPU improves application efficiency.
Software qualification
Budget engineering time for operating-system images, compilers, math libraries, container bases, schedulers, telemetry and security tooling. CPU-specific optimizations or assumptions in a Grace deployment may need revalidation on Vera’s custom Olympus cores. GPU code may remain conceptually portable, but the surrounding orchestration path still requires testing.
Memory capacity and data placement
Bandwidth and capacity are separate decisions. Confirm the Vera system’s usable memory, application footprint, checkpoint size, caching policy and spill behavior. For a Grace comparison, document the capacity and memory topology of the selected server rather than relying on a family-level specification.
Networking and storage
Agentic services can generate substantial retrieval, logging and tool traffic. Include ConnectX-9, BlueField-4, Spectrum-6 and storage paths in the architecture review where they are part of the proposed Rubin system. Validate network latency, collective operations, storage throughput and failure behavior with the same data-access pattern used in production.

OEM and hosted availability
Request written availability, support terms and delivery schedules from the OEM or cloud provider for the exact Vera configuration. NVIDIA has identified manufacturers such as Dell, HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro, and cloud collaborators including Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and CoreWeave; regional inventory, service levels and hosted capacity still require direct verification.
Can Vera be treated as a simple CPU upgrade?
Plan as if it is a platform transition unless the system supplier explicitly documents an upgrade path. Vera’s role in Vera Rubin and its integration with NVLink 6, networking and infrastructure processors indicate a co-designed system decision. A Grace server’s socket, firmware, memory, power delivery and cooling design may not support a Vera configuration.
Ask the supplier for a compatibility statement covering the chassis, board, firmware, operating system, accelerators, interconnect, management controllers, spare parts and warranty. If the answer is a new server or rack, compare migration downtime, data movement, application requalification and parallel-run capacity in the business case.

What are the common mistakes in a Grace-versus-Vera comparison?
- Comparing core counts as if they were equivalent performance: 88 custom Olympus cores versus 72 Arm v9 cores does not predict every workload. Thread-level parallelism, memory access and accelerator utilization determine the result.
- Using peak bandwidth as application bandwidth: 1.2 TB/s LPDDR5X and 1.8 TB/s NVLink-C2C are upper specifications. Measure sustained bandwidth and the application’s actual transfer pattern.
- Benchmarking only a GPU kernel: Vera’s target includes orchestration, tool use, analytics and feedback loops. Excluding those stages removes the work the CPU is meant to accelerate.
- Ignoring rack economics: A faster CPU can still produce a worse deployment if power, cooling, networking or support costs rise more than completed-work efficiency improves.
- Assuming software compatibility without qualification: Rebuild and test CPU-side dependencies, containers, schedulers, observability and security controls on the proposed platform.
- Accepting vendor percentages without conditions: Ask which workload, software, power limit and system configuration produced every comparative claim.
- Buying for a future workload without a transition plan: Identify the agent, reinforcement-learning or data-movement workload that will use Vera’s capabilities, and define when it will enter production.
What is the practical migration path?
A staged approach limits risk while preserving the option to adopt Vera as agent workloads grow.
- Baseline Grace: Capture production traces and energy per completed task on the current validated system.
- Select one representative workload: Choose an agentic, reinforcement-learning or orchestration-heavy service where CPU limits are measurable.
- Obtain a matched Vera configuration: Specify GPU count, memory, networking, storage, power and cooling rather than evaluating an unnamed CPU sample.
- Port the complete software stack: Include model serving, tool runners, sandbox controls, schedulers, telemetry and data services.
- Run controlled load tests: Match concurrency, model behavior, data locality and power policy, then record throughput, tail latency, utilization and energy.
- Perform operational tests: Exercise upgrades, node failure, network failure, workload draining, checkpoint recovery and security monitoring.
- Make a workload-level decision: Keep Grace for services without a demonstrated bottleneck; deploy Vera where measured gains justify the new platform and facility requirements.
What is the bottom line for AI data-center planners?
Grace remains the sensible choice for current, validated NVIDIA AI and HPC platforms. Vera is the forward-looking option when agent execution, reinforcement-learning feedback, high concurrency or CPU–GPU traffic limits the throughput of the overall service. Its 88 custom cores, 176 threads, up to 1.2 TB/s LPDDR5X bandwidth and up to 1.8 TB/s coherent NVLink-C2C are meaningful only when the workload can use them. Treat Vera as a Rubin-era system and procurement decision, validate NVIDIA’s performance claims with your own controlled tests, and compare complete rack power, cooling, networking, software qualification and support before committing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a coherent CPU–GPU link eliminate all data-transfer overhead?
No. Coherency simplifies how CPU and GPU access shared data, but applications still pay for movement, synchronization and poor access patterns. Profiling is necessary to determine whether NVLink-C2C changes the critical path for a particular service.
How can a small AI team decide whether Vera is too large for its needs?
Start with a trace from the existing Grace or other host platform and quantify CPU wait time, transfer traffic and accelerator idle periods. If those measurements do not show a material bottleneck, a validated Grace deployment is generally easier to justify than adopting a new rack-scale platform for theoretical headroom.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should an OEM quotation for a Vera system include?
Request the exact CPU and GPU topology, usable memory, networking and storage configuration, rack power range, cooling requirements, firmware and software support, warranty terms, delivery schedule and replacement process. These details determine whether the quoted system can run the intended workload and fit the facility.
Can hosted Vera capacity replace an on-premises evaluation?
It can provide an initial software and workload test if the provider exposes the required CPU, GPU, networking and isolation features. Confirm region, availability window, performance consistency, data-governance terms and whether the hosted topology matches the Vera system you would eventually purchase.
