Choose an RTX Spark laptop if fitting larger models on one portable Windows computer is your priority. NVIDIA lists RTX Spark configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory and local-AI guidance for models up to 120 billion parameters. Choose an RTX 5090 gaming laptop when your target models fit inside 24GB of dedicated VRAM and you want the conventional GeForce laptop platform, high sustained GPU throughput, and mature CUDA gaming and creator software.
These are different designs rather than two versions of the same laptop. RTX Spark combines a Blackwell GPU and Grace CPU with a shared memory pool, while an RTX 5090 laptop uses a discrete Blackwell GPU with 24GB of GDDR7. The right choice depends first on model capacity, then on speed, power, software compatibility, portability, and the exact laptop configuration.
What is the difference between an RTX Spark laptop and an RTX 5090 gaming laptop?
RTX Spark is a Windows superchip platform: a Blackwell RTX GPU and a Grace CPU share one pool of LPDDR5X memory. An RTX 5090 gaming laptop pairs a conventional mobile CPU with a discrete GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU that has its own 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM. That architectural distinction determines whether a model can be loaded in one memory pool or must be split between GPU memory, system memory, or storage.

RTX Spark configurations
NVIDIA lists two laptop configurations. One combines a 6,144-core GPU with a 20-core Grace CPU; the other combines a 5,120-core GPU with an 18-core Grace CPU. Depending on the configuration, unified LPDDR5X memory is listed at up to 128GB or 64GB, and the laptop superchip power range is 45–80W. The platform supports CUDA, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, DLSS 5, Windows 11, and both Game Ready and Studio driver paths.

NVIDIA announced RTX Spark laptop availability on October 16, 2026, from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and MSI. The launch announcement claims up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance. That is a platform maximum, not a promise that every model or every OEM configuration reaches the same result.
RTX 5090 Laptop GPU specifications
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with 10,496 CUDA cores, 1,824 AI TOPS, 24GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit interface, and 896GB/s of memory bandwidth. Its GPU subsystem is specified across a wide 95–150W range. It also includes fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation ray-tracing cores, and three ninth-generation NVENC encoders.
The name “RTX 5090” does not mean a laptop has the desktop card. NVIDIA’s desktop RTX 5090 specification lists 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of GDDR7. A laptop RTX 5090 has fewer cores and less memory, and its performance depends heavily on the manufacturer’s power limit, cooling system, CPU, and memory configuration.

Which laptop can hold larger local AI models?
RTX Spark has the capacity advantage. NVIDIA’s local-AI guidance lists GeForce RTX devices at up to 32GB of VRAM and model capacity up to 50B parameters, while RTX Spark is listed at up to 128GB of unified memory and model capacity up to 120B parameters on Windows.
| Platform | Memory listed by NVIDIA | NVIDIA model-capacity guidance | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX Spark | Up to 128GB unified memory; 64GB on another listed configuration | Up to 120B parameters | Larger models can share one CPU/GPU memory pool, subject to operating-system and runtime overhead |
| GeForce RTX devices in NVIDIA’s local-AI table | Up to 32GB VRAM | Up to 50B parameters | Capacity depends on the exact card, quantization, context, and whether layers are offloaded |
| RTX 5090 Laptop GPU | 24GB dedicated GDDR7 VRAM | Falls within the GeForce RTX category | Models larger than available VRAM need quantization, CPU/system-memory offload, or a smaller model |
The 120B and 50B figures are guidance, not guarantees for every model file or runtime. A model’s parameter count is only the starting point. Quantization changes the weight footprint; a longer context window adds key-value cache memory; and the operating system, CUDA libraries, inference framework, tokenizer, graphics stack, and other applications reserve part of the available pool. Concurrent requests or image-generation workloads can consume additional memory.
Why unified memory changes the capacity calculation
On RTX Spark, CPU and GPU tasks can draw from the same physical memory pool. A model that does not fit in the GPU’s immediately available working space may still run if the total unified-memory budget is sufficient, although moving data between CPU and GPU work can reduce throughput. The pool is not equivalent to having 128GB of dedicated high-speed VRAM: bandwidth, allocation policy, and the runtime’s placement decisions still matter.

An RTX 5090 laptop has a hard 24GB boundary for data that must stay on the discrete GPU for maximum speed. If the model exceeds that boundary, a runtime can place some layers or cache in system memory, but transfers across the CPU-GPU link add latency and may sharply lower tokens per second. Quantization can reduce the footprint enough to keep a model in VRAM, at the cost of numerical precision that varies by model and workload.
How much memory should you plan for a local LLM?
Start with the largest model and context length you actually intend to use, then leave headroom for the runtime and other applications. NVIDIA’s capacity guidance is useful for choosing a platform, but it should not be treated as a file-size guarantee. A model advertised as a particular parameter count may have different memory needs depending on whether its weights use FP16, FP8, INT8, or a lower-bit quantization.
- If your models comfortably fit below 24GB: An RTX 5090 laptop can keep the working set on its dedicated GPU, which is the condition in which its high-power design is most attractive.
- If your models approach or exceed 24GB: RTX Spark’s 64GB or 128GB unified-memory configurations provide substantially more room before you need aggressive quantization or offload.
- If you want to experiment with models in NVIDIA’s 120B guidance: Select the 128GB RTX Spark tier, verify the specific OEM memory configuration, and expect to tune quantization, context length, and runtime settings.
- If you run several workloads together: Reserve memory for the operating system, a browser, development tools, embeddings, vector stores, or image-generation pipelines rather than sizing only for model weights.
Do not infer that a 128GB machine will run every 120B model at full precision or at desktop-GPU speed. Conversely, a 24GB RTX 5090 laptop may run a smaller, well-quantized model very quickly. Capacity and speed are separate decisions.
Which is faster for inference when the model fits?
The RTX 5090 laptop is the better candidate for speed when the entire working set fits in its VRAM. Its discrete GPU can operate within a 95–150W GPU subsystem range, while RTX Spark’s listed laptop superchip range is 45–80W. More power and dedicated GDDR7 bandwidth can favor sustained GPU execution, especially for a model that does not require frequent CPU-GPU transfers.
There is no single RTX 5090 laptop performance number. A 95W implementation and a 150W implementation can behave very differently, and cooling, CPU choice, memory configuration, firmware, and fan policy also affect sustained results. Do not use a benchmark from one chassis to represent every RTX 5090 laptop.

What NVIDIA’s AI-performance figure does and does not tell you
NVIDIA’s RTX Spark launch material claims up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance. FP4 is a specific low-precision format and the figure is a peak platform claim, not a controlled comparison with an RTX 5090 laptop running the same model, quantization, context, and software. It should be read as an indication of accelerator capability rather than a tokens-per-second result.
Is the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU the same as the desktop RTX 5090?
No. The mobile and desktop products share the Blackwell generation and feature families, but they are different implementations. NVIDIA lists 10,496 CUDA cores and 24GB of GDDR7 for the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, compared with 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of GDDR7 for the desktop RTX 5090.
The desktop card also operates in a much larger power and cooling envelope. A laptop buyer should therefore compare the exact mobile GPU power setting and chassis rather than assuming “5090” guarantees desktop-level performance. The same warning applies to local AI: desktop specifications do not increase the 24GB memory available in a laptop RTX 5090.
Which platform is better for gaming and creator applications?
RTX 5090 gaming laptops have the more established GeForce laptop software path. They are designed around conventional Windows gaming notebooks, with NVIDIA’s Game Ready and Studio drivers, CUDA support, DLSS, Reflex, ray tracing, and creator applications. Their discrete GPU also gives games and GPU-accelerated creative tools a clearly defined VRAM pool.
RTX Spark supports the same broad NVIDIA feature families, including CUDA, DLSS, Reflex, Game Ready and Studio drivers, and creator applications. However, early game and application compatibility can depend on Windows-on-Arm support. Check whether the games, plug-ins, anti-cheat systems, and specialist tools you use have native or reliable emulated support before treating RTX Spark as a drop-in gaming-notebook replacement.
For video work, the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU includes three ninth-generation NVENC encoders, which can help workflows that use hardware encoding. RTX Spark is also positioned for creating and personal AI agents, but the exact encoder behavior and application support should be verified for the chosen OEM model and software version.

How portable and efficient are the two designs?
RTX Spark is designed as a slim Windows platform with a 45–80W laptop superchip range and all-day-battery positioning. That lower platform envelope can make it easier for an OEM to build a thinner system and reduce sustained battery drain, although actual battery life depends on the display, battery size, firmware, and workload.
An RTX 5090 gaming laptop generally needs a heavier chassis, larger cooling hardware, and a high-capacity power adapter to sustain its 95–150W GPU subsystem. It can be portable in the sense that it is a single machine, but it is not optimized around the same low-power design target as RTX Spark. For long inference sessions, either platform may deliver its best performance while plugged in.
How should you choose between RTX Spark and an RTX 5090 laptop?
- Write down your largest target model. Include the parameter count, intended quantization, maximum context length, batch size, and whether you will run other GPU workloads at the same time.
- Check the memory ceiling before comparing speed. A 24GB RTX 5090 laptop is appropriate only if your working set fits in that VRAM or you accept offload. For larger experiments, compare the exact 64GB and 128GB RTX Spark configurations.
- Decide whether latency or capacity comes first. Choose the RTX 5090 laptop when a fitting model needs the highest likely discrete-GPU throughput. Choose RTX Spark when loading a larger model on one portable system is the primary constraint.
- Audit software compatibility. Confirm CUDA framework support, Windows 11 support, game compatibility, anti-cheat behavior, plug-ins, and any Windows-on-Arm limitations before ordering RTX Spark.
- Compare the complete laptop, not only the chip name. Record GPU power limit, cooling design, CPU, system memory, storage, display, battery, and fan modes. Two laptops carrying the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU can have different sustained performance.
- Plan storage and model management. Large model files, multiple quantizations, caches, and checkpoints consume substantial SSD space. Verify the number of storage slots and whether the drive can be replaced.
- Confirm the memory is fixed. Unified memory in an RTX Spark laptop is not a user-upgradable DIMM pool, and the GPU in either platform is not a removable module. Buy the capacity you need at purchase.
What should you verify in an RTX Spark laptop listing?
Do not assume every product marketed as RTX Spark has the 128GB tier. Check the exact unified-memory amount, the GPU and Grace CPU configuration, the Windows edition, storage capacity, display, ports, cooling, charger, and warranty for your region. NVIDIA’s October 16, 2026 availability announcement names ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and MSI, but availability and configurations can vary by country.
- Memory: Confirm 64GB versus 128GB unified LPDDR5X.
- Compute configuration: Identify the 6,144-core/20-core or 5,120-core/18-core variant.
- Operating system: Verify Windows 11 and whether required applications support the system’s processor architecture.
- Thermals: Look for the manufacturer’s sustained power and cooling information rather than relying on a peak specification.
- Upgrade paths: Check soldered memory, SSD slots, wireless card access, and service documentation.
What should you verify in an RTX 5090 gaming laptop listing?
The most important line is the GPU power range or configured wattage. NVIDIA’s 95–150W specification describes the range of possible laptop implementations, not a universal setting. Then check the CPU, memory channels, cooling, power adapter, and whether the manufacturer’s performance mode requires wall power.
For local AI, confirm the full 24GB GDDR7 specification and inspect the manufacturer’s GPU monitoring or firmware documentation if available. Also check whether the laptop supports the CUDA toolkit and inference software you plan to use, and whether the display or storage configuration forces compromises elsewhere in your budget.
What are the main failure modes when running local AI on either laptop?
The model loads but generation is unexpectedly slow
This usually indicates CPU or system-memory offload, an overly long context, thermal throttling, or a power-saving mode. Reduce the context or batch size, choose a quantization that fits the intended accelerator memory, connect the charger, and use the manufacturer’s performance profile. On an RTX 5090 laptop, keeping the working set inside 24GB is often the most important first check.

The model fails during startup despite apparently sufficient memory
The operating system and runtime need headroom beyond the stored model weights. Lower the context length, close other GPU applications, use a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, and check whether the framework allocates a large cache at startup. On RTX Spark, verify that the runtime is allowed to use unified memory rather than enforcing a smaller GPU-only limit.
Games or specialist applications do not behave as expected on RTX Spark
Check native Windows-on-Arm support, emulation requirements, anti-cheat compatibility, and the application vendor’s current support notes. A feature such as CUDA support does not guarantee that every x86 game, plug-in, or driver-level utility behaves identically on a new processor architecture.
A laptop is much slower than another laptop with the same GPU name
Compare the configured GPU wattage, cooling, CPU, memory mode, firmware, and performance profile. The RTX 5090 Laptop GPU spans 95–150W, so chassis design is part of the specification rather than a minor detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 128GB RTX Spark laptop run any 120B model?
No. The 120B figure is NVIDIA platform guidance, not a universal guarantee. Quantization, context length, runtime reservations, operating-system memory, and concurrent workloads determine whether a particular 120B model loads and how quickly it generates.
Does unified memory make RTX Spark equivalent to a 128GB desktop GPU?
No. Unified memory gives CPU and GPU tasks access to one larger pool, but it does not provide the same bandwidth or execution characteristics as a large dedicated desktop VRAM subsystem. It primarily expands the range of models that can be resident on the machine.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will an RTX 5090 laptop run a model larger than 24GB?
It can, if the inference framework supports CPU or system-memory offload, but performance may drop because data must move between system memory and the discrete GPU. Quantization or a shorter context can sometimes bring the working set back within the 24GB VRAM limit.
Why do two RTX 5090 laptops produce different local-AI results?
Mobile implementations use different GPU power limits within NVIDIA’s 95–150W range. Cooling, CPU selection, memory configuration, firmware, and performance modes can all change sustained inference behavior.
